Heavyweight Lunacy

Heavyweight Lunacy

Lunacy is brewed exclusively with Belgian Pilsner malt, Styrian and English Goldings hops and freshly ground coriander. It begins its life with a long patient boil and is cast into the fermenter at 17.5 P. It then undergoes a vigorous fermentation and extended cold conditioning. After bottling, the beer receives an additional 2 week warm rest before it is released. This yields a surprisingly refreshing brew with spicy notes, sweet malt and subtle fruit.

3.3 Thanks for this one Mike! 2002 bottle. Hazy golden yellow with a nice large bubbled white head. Not the nicesst nose. Bitter 7up says Tami, I agree. A bit yeasty, spicy, with spoiled cabbage. Farts? Full creamy mouthfeel with great carbonation. Much better flavors. Appley esters. Spice. Sweetness. Creamy yeastiness. Sweetness lingers. Not bad at all.
3.2 Saw this at a beer shop in New York and thought I’d give it a try even though it was far from peak condition. Pours hazy golden with a light tan head. The aroma has rich malt, cream, butter, bananas and basement must. Medium / thick body with only a small amount of carbonation. The flavor starts out with overly rich malt, more abv heat than expected for 7.7% and a tan of mustiness. The finish has lightly toasted malt and cobweb characters. This was only okay, but I’m glad I was able to try it.
3.2 Hazy headless orange. Aroma is funky applesauce with slight fusel alcohol presence. Initial taste is acidic, but fades into sweet caramel apple. Carbonation is minimal, but soft.
3.0 Has a very Belgian aroma with lots of apple and Belgian yeast. There is also a little bit of citrus aroma and a bit of sourness. The flavor is very strange. It definitely has an apple/malty flavor and not a lot of carbonation. Very sweet.
3.1 THOUGHTS: I liked this more this time than I did when I first tried it a couple years ago, but it still isn’t one of my favorite trips. TECHNICAL: On tap at The Drafting Room in Exton at the Baltic Thunder release party. Poured a light, murky, orange with a white head that fully diminished. The aroma was apple cider, wood, yeast and spice. The initial flavor was lightly sweet and bitter and moderately acidic, while the finish was heavily sweet, moderately bitter and heavily acidic. There was apple, white wine and yeast in the flavor. The medium body dry with fizzy carbonation and a moderately astringent and alcoholic finish.
3.6 Had this many of times and now had an old bottle so why not rate it. Pours out a nice and mostly clear light orange/gold color with a moderate off white head. Aroma is of banana, sweet/sour fruits and slight yeast. Taste is similar to the aroma, banana, pear, yeast and some slight spice. RIP Heavyweight.....
3.3 Bottle shared by Crosling. Poured a clear golden color with a moderate white head. Aroma of yeast and fruity esters (light citrus and apple). Flavor was the same, with a sweet yeasty entry with fruity flavors including light citrus, apple, and pear, and ends sort of sour. Crisp on the palate. Not a bad beer, but just not too amazing. Thanks for sharing Crosling.
3.5 Cracking the cap unleashes a fountain of foam, and once poured the beer is thick in consistency and dark dandelion yellow in color. The copious froth dissipates at a furious speed, while bubbles scatter restively across the surface. Mulled apple cider dominates the aroma; very sweet, tart, and warm. Golden fruits baked with almond butter, honey, pineapple and cinnamon. Tastes bold with sweetness with moderate spiciness and lingering tartness; flavors of old banana, adhesive, sour yeasts, and pears. Underneath, a warm, caramel and honey syrup of generous, full pale malts. Palate is medium bodied with sharp effervescence, though the texture is quite soft and the body round. Finishes with dried out white wine sweetness and dallying sugars. Comes on a bit strong in general. Age has treated it evenly; the golden malts and thick yeasts still finding plenty of interesting avenues of interaction. Thanks Dean!
4.0 June 2006 - Beer poured with a tripelesque color, next to no head, but a slew of small yeasties floating around.. Very faint aroma cold, but aroma consistant with flavor emerged as it warmed. Flavor was sweet, a lot of honey. A rich spiceyness with something that I can’t put my finger on (and didn’t see mentioned in other reviews) present, along with a definite yeastiness. A tad or tartness and even sourness as it warmed. A lot going on in this one. A nice effort!
2.0 Had the pleasure of sampling this at the 1/27/2008 Pittsburgh ratebeer.com gathering and festival upstairs, Sharp Edge Creekhouse. It will be a long time, if ever I am invited again and I see a spread of bottles like I did there - ever again. I am not good enough for the beers that were that we sampled! For example, how about this beer, from the manager himself, mtoast. Smells a little sweet and fruity, somewhat like wine at times. Slightly hazy pale yellow with decent lacing. Barely any carbonation. Fairly strong with alky but it seem to have less than the 7.7% listed here. Overall rather strong, shows confidence in it’s personality. After a while this stuff really gets to the back of the throat, in a good way of course.
3.2 Poured a murky golden color with a small head. Aroma is a bit spicey with some citrus, clove, some mild funkyness and very earthy hop essence. Taste is somewhat bitter and has a very odd spice flavor. Flavors of dirt, cardomom, thyme, and some cooked green vegetables. Some belgian candi sugar aids in the sweetness and is mellowed form the citrus, wood, bread and yeast. Definitely very different. A vit strange but I liked it.
2.9 Bottle sampled at the Ratebeer meet-up 01.27.08 at the Sharp Edge Creekhouse. Beer courtesy of mtoast. Opaque orange gold with floaters and white head. Aroma is caramel, graham cracker, port. Flavor is apricot, malt, cinnamon, nutmeg, grass. I can taste the alcohol in this one.
3.2 From a bottle. Pours a golden hue. Aromas of sweet fruits and yeast. Flavor is sweet with some spice to it. Notes of honey and caramel. I have no idea how old this bottle is so age may have negatively effected this brew.
4.1 Draft. Hazy yellow with aroma of yeast and bananas. Sweet yeasty flavor with nice banana notes. Slick mouthful with dry finish. Medium bodied.
3.6 Draught: Aroma of pepper, coriander, hops, citrus orange, and lemon. Poured golden/orange in color with a small white head. Good lacing. Hazy. Sparkling. Flavor og hops, honey, alcohol, pine, light spice, and graham crackers. Medium body. Medium-sticky, tingly texture. Average to lively carbonation. Sweet graham finish.
3.4 Recieved in a trade thanks to Dickinsonbeer, thanks paul for the 12oz bottle. It pours a cloudy orange color with a decent head that fades just as quick as you pour the beer. The aroma is very sour like with lemon grass and some fruits mainly orange peel and some minor apricot. As the beer warms up and you take your first sip it is very strong sour orange and other fruits fig and hints of apple and blackberry, there is also some spice to like coriander and some all spice. Even though the flavor is nice the palate lacks since the flavors do not last long and fade rather quick.
3.7 Above average Belgian. Lashings of Caramels. Sweet, noney wheat, wine, yeast. Golden.
3.2 Bottle. Pleasant aroma of caramel malt, fruit, and some sourness; a little reminiscent of a barleywine. Low carbonation. The flavor is slightly sour with some "muted" caramel malt. Likely that this was better when new.
3.6 Had at Logan’s Oceanside beer tasting with AlohaC, and Hair, and Matt, and Ken, and Bill, and others. Bottle from alohaC, I think. Cloudy amber color. A little corriander. Nice easy to drink.
3.2 Bottle procured while in New York; poured an orange-gold; white head. Aroma of belgian yeast, fruit, and a general tartness. Flavor may be a bit past its prime. Beer was tart with some rather muted flavors. Flavor of belgian yeast, spice, citrus and fruit. Really a mediocre brew, but not overtly bad.
3.3 The bottle exploded when opened! They sat in my fridge for three hours untouched and one of the bottles was so excited it dumped itself on my counter. Decent tasting, not my favorite, worth the experience.
4.0 Draught. Golden colored, hazy. Citrusy aroma, tart fruity. Fruity, tart, wheaty. Too much acidic bite.
3.5 From a 12oz Bottle. Pours a transparent, golden dandelion color with a thin layer of quickly dissipating white head. Lots of floral character in the nose, with notes of violet petals, clover, and a mild milky caramel sweetness. Hints of bready yeast, crushed cardamom seed, and honeyed apricots as well. Light bodied, mildly carbonated mouthfeel. Doesn’t have an impressive amount of carbonation, which I initially attributed to the twist off cap, but I’m not picking up any oxidation notes, either. The flavors start out with a moderately sweet, golden candi-sugar body, softened with a touch of banana. A little bit of cardamom spice and an extremely fleeting suggestion of nutty husks jump in before it finishes with some dry, floral hops and herbal coriander. My bottle is clean, and doesn’t contain any of the funk that others have described. Thanks, Steve!

3.2 Bottle via JB175. Golden yellow color. Smell of yeast, lemons, clove, ginger, honey, malt, orange and pepper. Taste of yeast, clove, malt, honey, bananas, lemon zest, sugar and ginger. Tart but very enjoyable. Had a lot of carbonation.
3.4 Poured a hazy gold color with an off-white head. The aroma was malty with a fair amount of fruity esters. The malty flavor had mild yeasty esters and a very spicy finish. Mildly bitter finish and dry.
3.0 xxx good brew, alcohol content is pretty strong and doesnt really show through.
3.6 12oz as a bonus from MaxxDaddy - thanks!! This has held up very nicely, a crisp golden ale with a pleasant spice profile (pepper and clove) and a nice fruity finish, like pears and a bit of honey. Wish Heavyweight was still rocking.
3.4 Not really sure when this bottle is from. No date, and Heavyweight has been closed for awhile now. I just happened upon a four pack of this at Crown Liquors in Wanaque. Pours very hazy straw golden. Strong aroma of apple cider, alcohol, and some peppery spice. Big slightly acidic apple flavor, with a light spice, a bit of alcohol, and some lemon grass notes. Palate is medium, lots of fruity acidity, and a hint of white pepper spiciness. Decent, but a bit too fruity and acidic for my taste. Certainly glad I got to try another brew from Heavyweight though.
3.4 Courtesy boboski. Pours a cloudy gold with a small white head. Smells of some nice sweet spices, apple, and other citrus fruits. The taste is pretty big apple, with a noticeable alcohol character to it. Some Belgian candy sugar and other spices round out the flavors. Has a nice little bite to it. Big fruity aftertaste, a little bit bitter, but not a whole lot. Decent.
