Heavyweight Perkunos Hammer Imperial Porter

Heavyweight Perkunos Hammer Imperial Porter

A Baltic porter brewed in collaboration with Lew Bryson. This style is difficult to find outside of the Baltics. What a shame! The grist consists of lots of Munich malt and some chocolate and other specialty malts. A Bavarian lager yeast is used to create this. Dark and mysterious, subtle and well, it is called the Hammer. For those who care, Perkuno was the Baltic thunder god.

3.4 12oz bottle courtesy of riversideAK – thanks Alex! Pours deep dark brown with almost no head. The nose is dark fruit, cocoa, roasted malt and booze. The taste is sour milk up front, but that fades to ashy cocoa, toasted malt and light coffee. Lighter mouthfeel than expected. This one may have a bug or two in it. Still tasty.
3.1 Pours a rich brown color with a brown head. Aroma is caramel, toast, chocolate, cherries, some plum, toffee, raisins, some vanilla, and alcohol. Flavor is plum, caramel, chocolate, strawberry, toffee, and a thin toasty finish.
3.5 12 oz. bottle - thanks to eclectic for the trade; clear, dark brown with thin off white head; aromas of very sweet candy sugar, touch of butter, nuts and rich malts; flavors well faded with age and nothing interesting going on; sweet toffee baltic flavors with thin texture and some sweetness and dark fruit; was expecting more, but this is plenty old at this point
1.7 Majestic thanks goes out to FROTHINGSLOSH for this special brew! Had the pleasure of sampling this at the 7/9/2009 Pittsburgh RB tasting extravaganza (PGHRBEXT) at the Sharp Edge Creekhouse. It will be a long time, if ever I see a spread of bottles like I did there. I am not good enough for the beers that were that we served! For example, how about this beer; heavyweight hammer 2006! Barely any aroma, but what I do smell is a little off. Starts off really strong on the palate then goes somewhat astray. Weird! Some smooth carbonation, but just barely. I think I can’t really describe this experience, very unique. I don’t know what to really say about this brew. Rude finish. On style, even this old.
3.3 This one was sampled a bit old, mind you, slightly oxidized it seemed, but not quite sure. Poured a dark dark brown color with a lgiht tan head. Aroma was sweet roasted malts, but not burned, and some dark chocolate as well. Flavor was somewhat sweet chocolate, slightly roasted but thinned and a bit ruined by the oxidation.
2.6 This one has seen better days. Had this one at the RB Pittsburgh tasting. That said, there is a good beer under the oxidation.
3.8 Bitter chocolate, tar, tobacco, roasted malts. Pours very dark brown, black at center. Very rich dark chocolate, dark fruits, sherry-like, wine-like flavors, very smooth chocolate. It has a silky mouthfeel, very smooth. So so good!!!!
3.8 Bottle at home ... deep brown .... thin tan head ... sweet cheery and roast malt nose ... sweet fruity ... light roast ... cherry ... vanilla ... maybe a tiny sour tinge ... some raisins... quite tasty
4.0 (bottle from OSLO) Pours dark brown with a light tan head. Aroma is very vinous and somewhat candy like, with prune, raisin, light roasted malt, honey, and little to no oxidation. Taste is the same as the aforementioned, with a lot of vinous flavors, tons of raisins, honey, and just a light hint of roasted malt right on the finish. This is really good, and I’m glad I got to sample a non-oxidized bottle. Thanks Al!
3.8 A fantastic Baltic porter. Aroma was nice and full. Dark and roasted malt with a hint of black licorice and coffee. Pour was a beautiful deep dark brown/near black with a 1 finger tan head. Taste was big and malty with dark roasted malt and bitter dark chocolate dominating with the underlying black licorice making just enough presence to let you know what style beer you are drinking. Very nice carbonation for the style and a bitter aftertaste. Great beer.
3.8 [Bottle] Pours dark brown with a small lingering beige head that leaves good lacing. Aroma is sweet, with dark fruits, toffee, raisin, honey, and a touch of chocolate. Really, really nice at times. Taste has a little coffee, chocolate, oxidation, raisin, alcohol, roasted malt, sweet notes of honey, oxidation again. Clearly, the taste has suffered with age, but there are some flashes of the great beer that I suspect this was at one time. Good mouthfeel, smooth and has a long finish. Hopefully the amount of oxidation is variable between bottles, because although this bottle wasn’t dead it was certainly struggling to hold on. Would have loved to have tried it when fresher, but at least the aroma has held up pretty well. I would recommend drinking this now if you are holding onto it. Old rating: 8/4/5/4/13=3.4. Re-rate: This bottle was not very oxidized. Very chocolatey, some marshmallow, a little malt, honey, and plum. Silky smooth, thick mouthfeel. Very, very nice. Out of four bottles, this is by far the best one that I have had. I averaged the score out a bit with the oxidized ones.
4.0 Poured oily black with a brown head. Aroma of caramel. Some roasted coffee and chocolate. Slight oxidation but in a good way.
3.5 Bottle at Toncatchers T3 tasting. A dark brown pour with no head. The aroma was more like that of a barley wine with some old fruit. The flavor was chocolate and coffee. The mouthfeel was smooth. Overall: Considering this has been sitting around for a while it was rather good. Thanks Christian.
3.5 2005 Bottle - Pours dk brown with no head...aroma is cocoa, toasted oak...flavour was a bit tart and oxidized...chocolate still comes through with some coffee...good to experience...forgot who brought this, but thanks!
4.4 Retro review from 2006. Pours up with a voluptous creamish tan head that perfectly tops the nearly opaque dark brown body. Lots of chocolate with a hint of anise (licorice) notes with maybe just a wisp of hops. Bold upfront roastiness is rounded nicely by the chocolate, caramel & Munich malts. Rich melanoidins. Good balance of bitterness. Finishes bittersweet & warming. Medium-full bodied with good depth & complexity. Very enjoyable. Sorry to see another fine brewery vanish. Here’s to the God of Thunder! CHEERS! Beertracker *Thanks to beerhandy for the opportunity
3.9 Pours black with a thin mocha head. Smells of rich chocolate, licorice, and coffee. Tastes of chocolate, coffee, dark fruits and some oak in the finish. I’ve been told this was past it’s prime. If it is I wish I could have tried it fresh.
3.4 2002 Vintage:
Pitch black coloured body with a nice dense brown head; fully opaque. Aroma of prunes, raisins, cherries, roasted malt, light coffee (south america), chocolate and a bit of cabbage. Light to Medium-bodied; Strong fruity taste of prunes and raisins fading to an inherent maltiness with a bit of spice on the side. Aftertaste shows mostly the raisiny flavour with some light malts and a very light-bodied finish for what the beer should have been. I’m not sure if the body faded with the age, but this is a lot lighter than expected. I sampled this 3 year old vintage purchased from Chevy Chase Wine & Liquors in Washington, D.C. on 25-December-2005.
3.8 Dark brown with a thin tan head. The smell is dominated by dark fruits, dark chocolate and bitter cherries. Taste is full of chocolate, dates and cherries again with a slightly woody note and some acidity in the finish. You could tell it had a little age but this was still exceptional.
3.8 Bottle, brewtopia. Pitch black, tan head, nice looking body. Rich alcoholic coffee aroma is smooth. Great body with low carbonation. Smooth and silky. Clean clear and lovey brew, thank you whoever brought this.
4.0 Tasting at Brewtopia. Almost a black pour with a nice tan head. Aroma is sweet with tons of chocolate and some coffee. Flavor is very nice. Rich and full bodied wtih tons of chocolate and some coffee and a hint of dark fruits as well.
3.7 Bottle post closing. Pours a dark brown body with a tan head. Sweet malty, chocolate caramel. Notes of smoke and peat with a lightly sour mildly acidic finish. Coffee bitterness and toffee.
3.9 Pours black w/tan head. Aroma is dark fruit and coffee. Taste is all roasted malt with a touch of coffee. Thanks to WeeHeavySD for this one!
4.4 05 vintage. Shared via TheRealBastard. Pour is midnight black with small brown head. Aromas strong of coffee, roasted malt, and rasins. Flavor is very mellow with malt, dark fruits, and a lasting coffee flavor in the finish. Much much better thank Victorys imitation of the real thing. Wonderful brew!
3.1 Pours attractive deep caramel with nice tan head. The nose is sweet fruits, soy and a touch of cereal. The flavor goes way soy and sticky sweet.
3.6 Aroma is sweet dark fruits, lots of coffee and dark malts. Taste is slightly sour, dark malts, very low bitterness. Finishes somewhat clean with coffee and maltiness. Nice
3.8 bottle graciously provided by beerbill... pours a hazy dark brown topped by a dense spongy tan head which sticks around for a while and leaves spotty lacing. aromas of chocolate, whole coffee beans, dark dried fruit, wood and something red wine-like... a bottle sitting without a cork for a day to oxidize and open up. the flavor is really rich and malty... chocolate/sweetened cocoa, light yeast, coffee and prunes without the sugar content. lightly tart dry finish with a huge aftertaste of whole coffee beans tucked in my lip. medium body seems a bit thin from the acidity and soft carbonation. i’m floored that this is still in good shape... it must have had a loving home for many years. even though it is past it’s prime and slightly oxidized, it is still better than (baltic thunder)...
3.7 black with tan head. unique flavor with a lack of the traditional chocolate malt predominance of a porter and more appearance of crystal and the lighter malts. a strong alcohol component and an overall very nice and unique porter
3.4 Courtesy mcbackus, first brew of Merritt Island Throwdown. Dark brown color, dense thin tan head. Powdered cocoa aroma, slight licorice, a bit of alcohol. Slight heat on the taste, sweet roastiness, a bit too much alcoholic apparent in the taste for 8%. Chalky texture.
3.1 Courtesy mcbackus. Pours light brown with a light bubble presence. Looks to be medium bodied. Smells of a big malt presence, some sweet fruits, and a little caramel. Touch of oxidation was noticeable seemingly due to its age. The flavor had a good bit of tartness to it which sealed its fate that some oxidation had definitely set in. Still had some decent chocolate and roast flavors alive and kicking though and wasnt a total loss. Still drinkable, but well past its prime. Shame Ill never get to try a fresh bottle of this.
2.8 bottle: pours a dark brown, no head except a few bubbles on the edge. aroma is a nice caramel sweet malt, some roast, alittle sour like aroma and a touch of peppery spice. flavour is a little malt, sourness, some grains and peppery finish, some caramel too.
