(Jul-Sep) Style be damned once again. An Alt that's a lager? Stickenjab is a sticke or secret alt that was smacked upside the head with lots-o-German hops. Formulated in the collective mind of NJAB (New Jersey Association of Beerwriters), this beer is our fourth collaborative brew. Munich and pilsner malts support an armful of Hersbrucker hops. This crisp, clean amber brew is available is the summer months. 48 IBUs and 6.4% ABV.

2.612 ounce bottle from BeerandBlues2
Murky, muddy red going on brown. There’s a little bit of beige head.
Great big cider vinegar aroma. Big vinegar flavor. Way past its prime. Oh well. Bummer.
3.3Bottled. Poured a really cool shade of reddish-copper with a little beige head sticking around. The aroma was delightfully fruity, with reddish fruits and drawn caramel at the sweet core.. not a lot of hops remaining.. what was there was herbal in nature.. warmth brought out lots of toasted grains (they melded seamlessly with the aforementioned fruit).. I liked this. The flavor was driven by toasted grains and caramel with light herbal and fruity bitterness surrounding.. lightly sour fruits come in at the medium-length finish, reverting to the caramel at the very end. Lighter-bodied with decent balance.. it’s a shame that I tried this after the hops died down, but it was still tasty.
2.9Bottle received via trade with coldbrewky. Pours hazy tawny with a small, rocky, light brown head, diminishing with spare lacing. Aroma is average malt (toasted grain, straw, bread), average hops (herbs, celery, grass), average yeast (barnyard, earth) with notes of vinegar, soured fruit, and lemon. Medium bodied, sticky texture, lively carbonation, metallic finish. Average duration, light sweetness, moderate acidity and bitterness.
3.4In short: A smooth beer, sweet and with a lot going for it. Good despite its dying body.
How: Bottle, vintage, over 1 year-old I think. Given to me by either beastiefan2k or Dickinsonbeer, I foget, sorry to Eugene or Paul for not remembering. Nevertheless it is from a very cool but rather bad looking dude :)
The look: Almost clear amber body with a short-lived off-white head
In long: Body was a bit dead with a light oxidation. Too bad cause the taste was there. I’d describe it as dried peanuts with a barley candy coating all wrapped in caramel with peachy/orangey hops. Bready with a little woody and sour notes. The sweet caramelized finish was awesome. This beer is obviously going south now, too bad. Not a style that is aging gracefully but I really liked it nonetheless. And to think it was sitting in the back of my fridge for four months. I should have drank it as soon as I got it but I never seemed to find the time, always too busy drinking beer… worst excuse ever.
3.6Dark cloudy brown orange color. Nice aroma, sweet, little spice and some sourness. Taste sweet, malty, some fruityness. Slightly rich body. Some lite bitterness, well rounded.
4.0Bottle from the cooler of the local rip and run (AKA: Brice discount Beverages) Pours an extremly cloudy dark hazy amber. Dense tan head. Bottle conditioning has created a good deal of crap floating about in this beer. Thats ok. Deep nose of earthy pine and beeswax. Fruity light lemony body with a smattering of malt sweetness attempting to emerge. This is then immediatly put down by a tart lemony finish. A nice surprise out of New Jersey.
3.4Sorry to see this old-timer hang up his gloves. A classic from the summer ’03. Only wished we had played some Mike Tyson’s Punch Out while drinking this classic. A solid beer from a solid brewery.
3.912oz bottle, refrigerated since ~birth, courtesy of mj. Thanks, Mike! Pours a bright, orange-amber color; light tan head with good lacing. Very pleasant aroma: floral-infused maltiness: soft, tea-like malts and dried fruits; some caramel. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: dense, caramel and dried red fruits upfront; excellent, complex maltiness that resists getting anywhere close to cloying; lively carbonation on the tip of the tongue, with a mild citrus and mineral bitterness on the perimeter; unexpectedly good. Medium, caramel and chewy dried red fruit finish; some lingering sugar.
3.212oz bottles, from an unopened case kept in a cooler for the last few years. Clear dark copper colored body with a tan, clingy head. Nose of rich caramel malts and old oranges, lightly hoppy in the nose but not grassy, with a bit of a french toast scented yeast. Lightly bitter up front, with some coarseness from the grains as well, with wet brown sugar yeast flavors mixed with caramel and old fruit flavors. Held up fairly well; lacks oxidation, lacks any sort of old flavor..
3.4Poured beautiful deep apple cider brown with nice foamy head and good lacing. Wonderful aroma of sweet fruit. Mouthfeel is sticky. Flavor was mild malty, fruity (like oranges?) taste with a little hops thrown in...but WICKED sour. I haven’t had much of this style...maybe just not my thing.

I would like to rerate this beer.
3.3bottle from lukin013:
poured a murky apple cider colour with no head. aroma of malts, fresh fruit floral hoppness, and slight dark fruit.
flavour a bit scidic with bitter hops in the finish and some alcohol burn.
3.7Bottle thanks to yobdoog! Poured a rich auburn with no head, even with a vigorous pour. No lacing. Aromas of sour apple and cherry. Tastes of bret with some more sour apples & cherries and nuttiness. No carbonation to speak of, left a slight throat warming with an aftertaste of light smoked malts. The 6.4% alcohol is hidden very well. A very smooth drinking beer that is hard to classify into 1 category, it’s an alt, a lager and who know’s what else. Bottle may have been a bit past it’s prime, but still a very unique brew that is in a class all it’s own.
3.4Bottle. Pours a deep red body with mice size head. Aroma is of sweet malt, aged hops, light dried fruit. Flavor is sweet with a heavy malt taste, light hops, caramel and an odd buttery sweet candy taste at times. A nice take on the style being lager like. Enjoyable.
3.5Smallish head, but very nice dark copper coloring. Aroma is extremely malty, which seems to go against the 48 IBU the label boasts about. Lacing is almost non-existant, which keeps it from getting a "5" in appearance. Slight bitterness which shows mostly in the after. Interesting tart/sour flavor which lends to it’s otherwise clean and dry mouthfeel. Very true to style, very well made.
4.0Auburn-orange color, aroma smells like red wine. lively carbonation but little head. Palate is extremely smooth. Flavor is bready, syrupy with notes of apple and strong fresh hoppy aftertaste.
3.012 oz. bottle. Pours a cloudy deep amber with a thin off-white head that held its own all the way to the bottom of the glass. Not at all aromatic; just some very, very light malt detected. The flavor was very light as well with some malt, cigar tobacco, and prunes all noted. This bottle has definitely passed its prime and seemed tired, but it was definitely not infected. If I have another opportunity to pick up a bottle, I will re-rate this beer.
2.3It’s gotta be a year old by now and it doesn’t seem like age has helped this. Gushed from the bottle. Aroma of infection? some type of bret sourness and a little toasted bread. flavor is sourness, nuts, apples. this is terrible. the worst altbier i’ve ever had. what else can i say?...i’ll probalby drink half of it and pour it out.
3.7Pours a golden caramel color with a medium white-beige head. Spicy aroma of cinnamon apples, caramel and fresh yeast. Taste is slightly spicy with an apple cidery flavor and a dry cinnamon finish. Quite nice.
3.7Hazy orange with a large head. I’ve had a couple of ’turned’ bottles that I haven’t rated, but this one seems OK. Aroma is spicy hops, caramel and sour cherry. Spicy, fruity abd sweet caramel taste. Medium body. Sticky texture. Very balanced - sweet, sur, bitter. I’m so glad I finally found a good bottle.
2.912 oz bottle that seems to be passed it’s prime. First let me start by saying I love Heavyweight and it hurts me to have to rate anything they made negatively. The only way I can describe the aroma on this one is medicinal. Flavor is only slightly better but there is a weird stickiness follwed by a bad bitter flavor. If this wasn’t Heavyweight this would be a drain pour.
3.4Creamy and yummy higher in alcohol then I normally like but otherwise had a great flavor that goes down easy
3.5My last bottle of Stickenjab, this one definitely is a bit past its prime and I’m sad I couldn’t rate it while fresher. But the distinctive characteristics are still present and enjoyable. Medium body, cloudy amber color, big fruity flavor and bready malts everywhere. Mostly sour but with some rich fruits in there to balance. A really fine beer, yet another reason to mourn Heavyweight’s demise.
3.2Pours a hazy maroon with yeast floating around recklessly. Fruity smell, with a hint of vegeteables and malts. Slight oxidation is detected. Definitely slightly oxidized in the taste, I probably waited too long to drink this one. Taste was still flavorful, but little carbonation. Caramel, and slightly sour citrus are the most detected flavors in this one. Would have loved to have had it fresh.
3.5Dark copper with average white head. Aroma is full of yeast and fruity esters. Cherry, plum and apple. Light brett-like sourness up front in flavor. Very bready, finishes dry. Not sure if this is going bad or not. Doesn’t resemble an alt. Enjoyable regardless
4.0Aw! what a great brewery. I hope they start off again soon. I have lived in NY forever and never had a chance to try their beers. Pours out a hazy and stormy dark color, amber brown. Head is frothy and these suds are long lasting. Smell is nice with a bit of oak, and biscuits kinda like a brick oven. Taste is a bit tarty, peaches, and tangerines. A slight caramel taste. Good beer, not to familiar with this style but very drinkable and enjoyable. Hops, Malts, And citrous all in one.
2.612 oz bottle via BA Secret Santa (Langhauser). Pours a semi-clear amber with a tiny head. Nose is mostly fruity easters and alcohol. Taste is both sweet and sour. Oxidized quite a bit. Not sure what the flavors are, perhaps some strawberries and nuts. Low carbonation. Light body. Don’t care for this one very much. Likely was good when fresh....
3.812 oz bottle thanks to my Secret Santa. Pours a clear rusty orange with a tall white head on top. The aroma is nice sweet malts apples, fruit, and yeast. Medium bodied with a really nice balance of sweet apples, a little carmel, a little tart, a little bit of earthy hops, and a crisp finish. I’m surprised with this one, I would love to throw back a couple of these on a hot day.
4.3Poured a very opaque rusty dark orange. Big aroma that seems like autumn to me ... caramel and malt. Nice. Full-bodied and chewy with full-on flavors of malt, warm bread, crunchy fruit ... but what this really tastes like is that caramel halloween candy! This would be a perfect Thanksgiving quaff.
3.7Tap at Barcade. Deep amber colour. Aroma is earthy and lightly fruity, berries over a sweet bready malt base. Quite aromatic with earthy and spicy noble-type hops. Sweet toast and dark bread aroma. Big and fairly malty body. Great balance of sweet malt, earthy/spicy hops and a solid bitterness in the back. I don’t know Alt very well, but this is one of the tastiest I can remember.
