Honorary brothers Tom Baker and Tony Forder, created their special Gruit to flavor this medieval ale. In the 14th century, before the advent of hop usage, ales were infused with sacred and secret herbs. Yarrow, Sweet GAle and Wild Rosemary were used to create this earthy, complex and intriguing ale.

3.1This beer poured a cloudy reddish brown with no head. It smelled like cherry coke, and tasted like flat cherry coke mixed with water. I am not very familiar with the gruit style, but if I hadn’t been told, I would not guess this was a beer. I would not serve this beer with food.
3.2Bottled. Poured medium coppery-amber with a short-lived fizzy cap of tan head. The aroma picked up the strangest blend of floral, herbal, and sour notes I’ve ever encountered.. hibiscus, dried rosemary, fruit skins, and honey come to mind.. bonus point for the different factor! The flavor was along those same lines.. sour lighter fruits at the core with dried petals, rosemary, and other herbs surrounding.. again I think there was some honey holding it together.. long sour, spicy finish. Medium-bodied with fuller carbonation on the palate.. a hair too sour for my liking.. intriguing blend of components. I wonder what this was like fresh..
3.5Shared at Cleveland tasting 3/15 Bottle: Pours a hazy gold with a white head. Aroma, yeasty notes, spices, pale malts. Flavor, yeast, some spice, slightly tart, herbal notes.
3.3Bottle shared at the Cleveland tasting. I do not know who. I do remember absolutely loving the name. Because isnt that oh so important? Hah. This was a very strange brew! Pour was a cloudy copper color. Smell was wet grass. Taste was a bit bizarre to say the least. Grass. Spices. Sour. Descriptition that says "Intrigueing" is correct...
3.1July 2006 - Spiced aroma made me fear for the worst. The sourness covered the spices, so that’s good. It wasn’t bad, was definitely memorable, but not something to go back to. I can’t say I’m going to miss HW horribly....
2.9From a bottle. no idea of the age ot this bottle. Pours a hazy orange color. Smell is fruity, with some spice and earthy notes. Taste is of very tart fruit. The tartness over powers the herbal notes and makes it hard for any other flavors to come through.
4.012 oz bottle from Lou18 - thanks Lou! No date markings, which I find odd, since others have listed a date. A still, lightly hazed orange pour with no head. What an odd nose! All sorts of herbal and spicy scents - I have no idea what they are - and a mild funky sour note. Tart flavors, more crazy herbalness and spices. Kumquat and pale malts, plus a tinge of cherry. Wow - what a strange yet lovely beer!
3.2Bottle at Toms Ultimate Glasgow Tasting: Poured copper color with off white head. The aroma is fruit and spice. The taste was a sour tingley fruit.
4.0Bottle at ultimate glasgow tasting. I was well into this even though it cut my hand open just opening the bottle and it was out of date by a year. Aroma is spicey, corriander and peppery, tart and hints of sourness. Taste is like a spicey flemish ale, very tasty, however i’ll never get the chance to have it again.
3.5Bottle at Toms Ultimate Glasgow Tasting ... Copper brown colour ... odd not unpleasent fruity high hop nose ... fizzy fruity little tart fruit hint of lemon and apples.
3.2Bottle from NYC courtesy of Nav. Soupy blood orange pour swirling with detritus. A quickly dissipating halo of froth. Flemish sour acetic aroma with vinegar and apple sherbet. Fruitily acidic with a pleasantly herbal backdrop of applepeel, earth and rosemary. A bit flat and wishy-washy. Would have liked the herbs and spices to have been more assertive- they’re somewhat drowned rather than complemented by the sourness. And I know it defeats the object, but what this beer is really crying out for is a citrussy infusion of spiky US hops...

2.6(Bottle) Courtesy of Oakes. Reddish orange body without a head. Nose of fruit malt and honey. Flavour is fruity tonic and raspberry tart. Pretty average.
4.212oz bottle @ Downtown Beer Bar aka Beer Heaven in Downtown Brooklyn on Court. Wow so damn thankful I tried this. Listed as a scottish ale, this surpised me. Pours dark amber with a bright white ring head. Aroma is sweet and slightly tart and sour. Taste is fucking holy shit awesome. Sweet bitter and surprisingly nice, and great sour beer. This beer is damn amazing. I love it.
3.7Bottle. Pours cloudy orange body with thin head, heavy sediment floating. Aroma is of honey, green grapes, peaches, some notticable herbs - tarragon, oregano, lemon thyme. Complex aroma. Flavor is tart, slightly sour, very citrusy, with an odd spice lingering near the end. Intresting and good brew.
3.3INTERESTING COMBINATION OF FLAVORS. STILL A QUALITY BEER HOP CHARACTER AND ALTOGEATHER AN ENJOYABLE BREW. SHOULD HAVE TRIED IT MORE OFTEN. 2ND OR 3RD BOTTLE I’VE EVER HAD. REMEMBERED IT MORE DISCERNABLE LAST YEAR. NICE FRUIT BACK FLAVOR. YEAH EARTHY.
2.8(Bottle, 2005 vintage) Pours a murky brownish orange body with a small white head. Aroma of herbs, floral, and earthiness. Flavor of sourness, yeast, and herbs.
3.412 oz bottle. This is one wild beer, if you can even call it that because it tastes more like a soda. Poured a slightly hazy orangey/amber with a HUGE head and TONS of carbonation, you could actually hear lots of fizzing as the head settled down. Aroma is lemon/lime, think sprite or 7up, with a kick of earthiness. Flavor is very citrusy with a slight bite towards the end. Very different indeed.
3.912oz bottle, purchased recently @ Capone’s (Norristown, PA). Cloudy orange-amber. Very thick white head initially that subsides to about 1/4 inch. Sweet and complex aroma with herbs, honey, and apples. Complex flavor as well; earth and spices are prominant, with some orange, pepper, alcohol and malt. Finishes dry. Very refreshing. this beer has held up very well.
3.6Cloudy orange with a small head. Aroma of fruity and sour candy. Tastes of lemony soda pop, with a little earth and spice. Tangy sour texture. One of the all time strangest beers I have tasted. Goodbye to a original and brave brewery.
4.1I’ve had this twice. Once, last summer, was a taller 12 oz bottle, then I just had a stubbier, newer bottle (thanks, eclectic). I love this beer. Glowing tan and yellow, heavyish on the body, but it seems appropriate. Very little head generated, but again this "seems right." Somewhat gingery, with a real spicy tang, very rootlike and earthy. The aroma conveys a vegetal sourness in abundance; this beer is so of the earth it fascinates me. The taste is sweet and sour in equal measure. Maybe a little bready quality too. I really like this beer. Again, RIP Heavyweight.
3.5I know I’ve rated this before, but somehow my rating ended up in that big notebook in the sky... here goes again. Deep amber beer with a bit of ruby tint. Fast fading off white head. Aroma is lightly caramelly and malty, with sweet white grape and raisin sweetness. Sweet fruity aroma with some slight herbal components as well. Flavour is quite sweet. Sweet grapes, berries and a touch of mintiness on the back. Nice herbal flavour over a fairly sweet base. Not cloying though. I quite like this.
2.9Medium hazy orange color - large bubbly head. Aroma is fruity, notes of hops and some yeast and spice. Flavor is somewhat tart, slightly sour, kind of spicy at the back of the throat. Has an almost Brettomyances quality to it, but seems off-kilter and not balanced with the rest of the beer. Kind of interesting, but not something I’d seek out.
2.912 oz. bottle via trade with luiss - Pours a hazy amber color with no head. Has a fruit and caramel malt aroma. Has a slight tart fruit flavor. Medium body. Interesting beer. Thanks Luis.
2.412 oz bottle. Aroma of rotten fruit. No head, no lacing. Taste is sour fruit, Taste is kind of a cross of Orange juice and vinegar, with some hints of sour patch kids and day old grapes. In other words, blech. This beverage, in no way resembles beer.
Yuck yuck yuck.
2.912oz bottle. I found this one at the back of my beer fridge. Poured a medium and see through amber color with a very small sized head. Aromas of citrus, spices, and had some funky herbalness going on there. Tastes of lemons, grapes, and spices. Light sour and puckering finish. Interestingly different.
3.6Amber/dark orange. Modest, frothy, tan head. Sharply floral, herbal, spicy, lightly sour, grainy, very subtle toffee. Medium, balanced palate. Solid.
3.612oz bottles via trades with slob and jhop - Thanks to both of you!! - Pours cloudy amber with short offwhite head that stays only briefly.. Aromas of orange, ginger, and herbs.. Flavor is quite intriguing.. Definite sour notes there like grapefruit, but some grassy notes, and I get ginger too.. Interestingly herbal.. Like a tea kind of.. Not much carbonation and medium body make it very drinkable and unique.. Earthy and very natural it seems... I love it when brewers do something off the wall and well I think this is definitely one of those..
3.0Golden in color with a good amount of sediment. Decent foamy head that crackles and pops like rice crispies. Very strong citrusy-acidic aroma that almost burns the nose like paint thinner. Very unique. Taste is somewhat sweet with herb & root taste that I’m not a huge fan of. Mouthfeel goes flat quickly. I’m really glad someone decided to put hops in beer, but this is nice to try.
3.3Poured a clear glowing amber color with a thin off-white head. Spicey herbal aroma with some citrusy notes. Herbal flavor with some acidity. Tasted like ginger ale. Different for sure.
