Het Anker Gouden Carolus Ambrio

Het Anker Gouden Carolus Ambrio

Gouden Carolus Ambrio is aromatically brewed according to the ancient recipe of the Mechelschen Bruynen. Ambrio is an ’amber’ ale brewed with ’brio’. This white beer of high fermentation finds its origin in the traditional beer of the city of Mechelen. As each city had its own typical beer, the Mechelenians drunk their amber beer: "Mechelschen Bruynen" for hundreds of years.

Our brewery is the only brewery that still brews this type of beer. According to the tradition the basic recipe of this beer dates from 1421 and is therefore the oldest beer from the brewery.

The current version is slightly heavier than the original and finer hopped. The balance between the different malts, the fine hops and typical aromas with herbs ensure that this beer combines the whole-hearted nature of brown beers with the freshness of blonde beers.

This flavored and spicy light brown tasting beer should be served fairly fresh. Refermentation in the bottle.

3.6 Een heerlijk fris bier. Fijne afdronk
3.6 Tap at FOB, Rimini, Italy. Pours deep amber, hazy, with fine white foam. Aroma is fruity, plum, a little caramel, dry nuts. Body is average, but with marked soft carbonation. Taste is medium-high sweet. Final is average.
4.1 Another great beer from Carolus. Smooth body. Little sweetness with bitter finish. Would definitley drink again
3.6 Trübe bernsteinfarben mit weißer Schaumkrone. Hefiger, malziger, fruchtiger Geruch. Geschmacklich malzig, hefig, fruchtig nach dunklen Beeren, Karamell, leicht hopfig. Mittlere Süße mit leichter Bitterkeit, mittlerer Körper mit spürbarer Kohlensäure.
3.5 On tap at Het Anker brewery. A cloudy amber pour with a thick, long-lasting, full-lacing, ivory-hued head. Aroma is very subtle: strawberries and other red wild berries, white bread. Fizzy, full-bodied, crisp and almost bitterless. Long-lasting, though.
2.8 Aroma; malts, spices, caramel, hops, yeast. Look; off-white big head on amber mahogany body. 2.0 Ok
2.9 Muy rica ámbar muy parecida a cucapá sabor intenso toque casi medicina
4.0 Beautiful hazy amber color and a huge head. Fruit -apricors-, herbal and liquorice aromas. Some red fruits also. Solid, firm body. Robust taste, with subtle liquorice again. Fruits, wood, herbs and spices. Roasted, ashy notes, a bit peppery and mildly hoppy. Subtle 'natural' sweetness - vanilla and red berries maybe. Very well balanced, good complexity. Dryish, bit alcoholic finish. Quite good.
4.0 Cask at The Moon Under Water (JDW), Watford on 04/11/2005. This was pretty special to have a Belgian beer on cask. It worked very well, and was incredibly deceptive in its strength. I recall that the pub wasn’t supposed to serve whole pints (bearing in mind that 8% was pretty much unheard of to cask ale drinkers at the time), but the staff didn’t really pay attention to this rule and my pal decided to have pints of this all night. In fairness, he was probably young enough to not wake up with the mother of all hangovers.
3.5 This is a backlog rating from 2008 from a bottle shared by Tmoney99, from notes. When I had this beer it was average to below average for the style and not something I wanted to have again or I just didn't get back to my notes because of my technology at the time, work and/or family. Words to describe this beer are dark fruit, yeast, sweet malts, yeast, light spice.
3.3 The Mechelse bruine as I remember from about 35 years ago was a beer that was clearly related to Gouden Carolus but ( as I remember) less mainstream than the current beer.
4.0 Nice amber.
3.5 Bottle at home. Dark color, middle foam size. Good balanced beer. Drinkable and fits into style.
3.5 Very fruity and interesting beer for the style.. It has one very weird bittersweet taste and leave you some pleasand malty and bitter aftertaste. Also i notice some spicy and caramel notes here.. Overall one decent beer from this great brewery but i have drink better "Belgian Strong dark" beers for sure..
3.3 Amber color with lacing off-white head. Aroma has caramel, hay and sweet fruity notes . Taste is malty sweet with long quite sweet aftertaste. Flavors of caramel, strong malt, spices and fruits.
3.6 Draft @ Brouwerij het Anker, Mechelen. Clear light amber, creamy offwhite head. Caramel, herbal, bread, grainy, medium hoppy bitter: like a firm special belge. Medium body and carbonation.
3.6 Lekker zwaarder biertje. Veel smaak.
3.5 Gedronken bij het anker . Helder alberkleurig bier met witte schuimkraag. Smaakt bitter, kruidig , weinig bruis, caramel
3.8 Dark amber and hazy with a frothy head. Smell of peaches and yeast. Bitter hoppy taste, medium carbonation.
Retrogusto dulce y suave. Buena.
3.5 Dark amber and cloudy, heavy creamy head with good retention, raisins and nuts aroma, medium body, raisins flavor
3.4 Pours a milky dark beige colour with a big tan head. Mostly sweet malt on the nose. The taste is spicy with pepper and coriander notes, although this is not a wit.
3.5 Robe ambrée, mousse abondante. Caramel, fruits, petite pointe d'amertume. Correcte.
