High Water Aphotic Imperial Porter

High Water Aphotic Imperial Porter

Aphotic [ā-fō’-tic] Greek: without light.
Formally defined as the depths in water
beyond which less than one percent of sunlight penetrates. Aphotic is a beer with a very dark side. Just one sip and you will understand the true depths of its darkness as the deep, luxurious layers of malt rich-ness tantalize and tease your taste buds.

Brewmaster’s Notes: Aphotic Imperial Porter - Vintage 2013 To be Released: November 18, 2013 Bottles 22oz Draft 5.16 gal Keg Based on the popularity of our barrel aged version we have decided to release the Aphotic as a year round beer. We have forgone the barrel aging and developed a slightly different recipe focused on the use of Molasses, Muscovado Sugar and Star Anise. Copious amounts of Carafa 1,2 and 3 as well as chocolate malts and Midnight Wheat malts were used. Deep, dark and delicious!!!! Enjoy....Steve

3.6 Bottle - Dark sweet chocolate. Jet brown with a small light brown head. Rich dark chocolate with a long roast finish and bitterness.
3.9 650ml bottle at Matt's. Pours a dark broen with a dark beige head. Aroma is roasted malt with slight fruity notes on the back. Similar taste. Good.
3.7 Bottle a black colored beer with a white-off head aroma roasted malts coffee spicy fruits dark fruits caramel citrus and bittere hops flavor malts roasted malts coffee chocolate dark fruits fruits citrus spicy yeast and bittere hops
3.8 22 oz. bottle. Pours a medium, thick, well retained beige head, over a clear, dark brown (SRM 35) body......nose is cocoa, chocolate, caramel, vanilla......taste is moderately sweet, with cocoa, chocolate, caramel, toffee in the sweetness, with mild roasted malt coffee tones, slight biscuit, cracker tones finishing with mild hop tones.....mouth feel, medium slightly sticky body, alcohol warmth present, moderate carbonation. This is a heavy, rich, nicely balanced Imperial Porter. It is a pleasant cool cold weather beer, the would not work in hot weather. BJCP 8/3/15/4/7
2.9 Bottle. Head is initially average small, frothy/fizzy, light brown, fully lasting. Body is dark brown to black (non-opaque, flashlight tested). Aroma is moderately malty (chocolate syrup, roasted grain), with notes of vanilla and alcohol, light note of blackberry. Flavor is heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Medium to full body, syrupy/watery texture, lively carbonation, moderately to heavily alcoholic. A very ordinary and rather dull impy stout/porter...pretty much just the usual stouty suspects in the aroma with a very mild berry note in the background. Very syrupy sweet in the mouth with just barely enough bitterness to balance in the finish, and lots of alcohol heat...drinkable, but not really enjoyable. No off notes but uninspiring and forgettable. Great name for a stout, but unfortunately it's not apt here since light passes easily through it...if you're gonna name your beer aphotic, achieving opacity would seem to be a prerequisite.
3.8 Black pour with a small tan head and light sticky lacing ..... Aroma of chocolate/cocoa, intense fresh coffee, light earthiness and roasted malts ..... taste is of caramel malts, cocoa, milk chocolate and earthy with fresh coffee and sugary sweetness ..... Medium to full body with a soft creamy feel ..... finish is bitter with lingering coffee and creamy chocolate .... bitter cocoa .... really well put together abv hidden well lots of great cold coffee flavor
3.8 On tap at Hops & Pie. Black colored appearance with a small tan head. Aroma of chocolate malt, light smoke, mild coffee, light earthiness and a touch of charred oak. Similar flavor, adding moderate sweetness and a touch of bitterness. Medium to full body with a soft creamy feel and a smooth finish.
3.8 Pours a finger of tan head on a black body. Aroma is caramel, coffee, dark chocolate and mild licorice. Taste is darkness, mild coffee bitterness and a touch of caramel sweetness, dangerously drinkable. Texture is thicker. Really nice.
4.0 Bomber. Aroma is chocolate. Opaque black color, not much head, little lacing. Flavor is rich, a little sweet, chocolate, delicious!
3.8 Black pour with a thin rocky light beige head. Roasty cocoa and dry roast malt nose with a biscuity base. Smooth but bold form body with lots of biscuit at the base with dry cocoa and whispers of coffee. A bit dry and biscuity but pretty nice.
4.1 Bomber poured a clear dark reddish brown with a small lasting brown head. Aromas of roasted malt, coffee, baker’s cocoa and light earthiness. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors if coffee, cocoa and light roastiness with a smooth lingering mocha finish.
3.8 Pour is a black with a tinge of brown, quickly dissipating tan head. Aroma is nutty, roasty, light alcohol, chocolate, coffee. Taste is chocolate, light roastiness, dark chocolate bitterness, light alcohol, cream. Mouthfeel is nice, appropriate for the style.
4.5 Black in color with a tan head of foam. Fresh ground and pressed cold brewed coffee is apparent. Supported by a solid caramel malt base. Coffee all the way still and I am driven to great conclusikns by that fact. A delicious "imperial porter".
3.9 Közepes, tartós, bézs hab, fekete szín. Csokis, kakaós, aszalt gyümölcsös illat. Száraz, csokis, kakaós, aszalt és sötét gyümölcsös ízvilág. Testes, Közepesen testes, közepesen keserű. Kellemes, jól összerakott stout.
3.5 Sample at Kraftstore Katowice panel. Jet black with medium, beige and solid head and nice lacing. Complex aromas which start first with citrus (!) notes on little bit malty background but, unfortunately, also with iron. Getting warmer iron is disappearing and chocolate notes come first. Medium body, light sour notes with little bit alcohol warming in the finish.
3.1 W aromacie, o dziwo, uderzył amerykański chmiel, cytrusy, tropiki, by na koncu wylazło... mega żelazo. Po ogrzaniu żelazo się traci, wychodzi czekolada. W smaku zbyt wytrawne, mało ciała, alko ukryte, trochę palone, trochę kawowe. Takie piwa wrażenia już nie robią.
3.8 Bottle, 9.3%. Fruity and roasted aroma. Black colour. Small frothy light brown head. The flavour is nicely roasted, but not very bitter. Has a good fruity note to balance. A little jammy. Very flavourful and quite well-balanced.
4.0 Bottle. Pours cloudy very dark brown with airy light tan head. Clear aroma of yeast and malt, with notes of roast and touches of coffee and hints of hops. Roasty flavour with notes of cocoa and malt and touches of yeast. Bitter, hoppy and roasty aftertaste with notes of coffee. Nice,
3.9 Bottle @Curing Lillquist’s man-flu. Black, thick light beige head. Roasted maslt and chocolate aroma. Sweet flavour, roasted malt, choc and licorice. Long bitter finish, a little light but flavourful.
4.2 Bomber had a nice aroma of dark malts, raises, dark fruits. Taste is nice blend of chocolate, roast malts and molasses. Pretty good.
4.0 Butelka jedna pinta pita w domu. Kolor ciemnobrązowy, nieprzejrzysty, piana solidna pięknie osiada na szkle, ciemnobeżowa. Aromat kawowy, palony z owocami w tle. W smaku jest lekka kwasowość i czekolada ale przebija mocna goryczka. Alkohol wyczuwalny ale nie przeszkadza, mocno rozgrzewa, świetne piwo.
3.7 Bomber from Whole Foods PM. Hazy black pour with tan head. Nose is roasty dark malt, hops, cacao. Tastes very rich, with slightly charred dark malt flavor, hops, cacao, dry finish, some ovaltiney and nutty undertones as it warms. My cherry popper for this brewer, and I can’t wait for the next ones.
4.3 Tap at SF Beer Week Opening Gala. Pours dark brown. Aroma is hot chocolate, burnt, warm, good vanilla, coffee, caramel. Body is heavy, sweet, chocolate, boozy, strong, not overpowered. Long sweet chocolate palate. Very good.
3.6 Black with minimal head. Medium roast coffee, sweet caramel malt, chocolate, booze, some earth. Medium body that leans a bit thin. The booze is hot and can overpower other tones especially as it warms up. A very solid offering but I’d like the hot booze reigned in a bit.
3.7 Pours dark brown with medium foam. Bitter aroma of malts with a taste to match. Some roasted coffee. Standard but tasty imperial. Bottle.
4.3 Bottle from BevMo! in Redwood City, CA. Aroma is mild dark roast coffee, dark chocolate, prune juice, slightly smoky. Taste is tangy, smoky, fruity...WOW! Leathery, charred fruit, prunes, bitter dark roast coffee, smoky. Really incredible charred fruit and coffee flavors...would have liked a little more body but the flavors here are Officially Awethome!
3.5 Bottle shared @sklepzpiwem.pl Aroma is nothing I would expect it to be, not very intensive. Some coffee, some dried fruit, a bit vanilla, everything is very subtle, not intense at all. Taste is not intense either, coffee dominates it all, some chocolate, roasted malts, medium bitter, with a bit of dried fruit coming back again together with loads of coffee in the dry medium bitter finish. Body is medium light. Overall I miss some more body and intensivity.
4.0 Aroma: chocolate, prune, caramel, alcohol, figs Taste: light bitter, light sweet, dark chocolate, prune, earthy, roasty, figs
2.5 5th September 2016 Almost opaque dark brown beer, tidy tan head. Palate is light and fairly dry, reasonable fine carbonation. Very tangy dark malts, dry dark chocolate. Tangy dark fruits. Dry finish. Too tangy for me, getting toward mildly sour.
4.2 Bottle. Lots of malty complexity, cocoa, chocolate, rich malty body, moderate bitterness. Great one.
