A deep amber colored American ale, featuring a rich malty body. Cascade and Willamette hops add a complex hop flavor and aroma. This ale is exceptionally balanced between malty sweetness and delicate hop bitterness.

3.6Found from bottle from Ingles in Franklin, NC. One of the better American style ales I have found. Just a really well put together early to mid fall option.
3.5a bit hoppy for an ale.. but not bad
3.4Bottle - 12oz. Cloudy amber body with a thin, off-white foamy head. Good malty/hoppy aroma with butterscotch hints. Its malty/hoppy taste carries woody and sweet notes. Ends with a decent bittersweet finish.
3.6deep reddish-brown color; nice bready malt aroma; a very well balanced beer; smooth, bready malt with the perfect amount of bitterness; mild citrusy hops
3.4On tap. Refreshing in color with small tan head. Subtle malty aroma. Sweet with caramel malt and toffee notes. Light bodied. Nice.
3.5Draft, takeover at ADT. Clear amber brown with a full off-white head. Nice malt, bread aroma. Smooth malt flavors, bread, light caramel. Nicely. Slanted finish. Solid if mild amber.
3.2Bottle from Total Wine, South Richmond. Pours red with a small beige head. Aroma is caramel malts, light grasses, light leaves. Flavor is nearly identical. Caramel followed by some leafy bitterness and minor grass. Plain but drinkable.

2015 BJCP Category: 19A American Amber Ale
AROMA: Moderately strong hop character (citrus, floral). Some malt sweetness. Noticeable oxidation character. 7/12
APPEARANCE: Beautiful deep clear copper color. Large off-white foam retains and laces well. 3/3
FLAVOR: Moderate malty sweetness with caramel and toffee (to a lesser extent). Firm hop presentation with earthy/citrusy flavors and moderate dry bitterness. Caramel taste emerges briefly on the finish before fading away cleanly. Slight lemon sherry flavor due to oxidation. 13/20
MOUTHFEEL: Medium-light body with medium carbonation. Quite smooth and easily drinkable. Feels rather light for 5.6% ABV. 3/5
OVERALL IMPRESSION: Has what you want in an amber ale - just not enough of it. 6/10
TOTAL SCORE: 32/50
3.0Bottle from Harris Teeter, Hampstead, North Carolina. Dark clear amber with a thin head. Has a strong hoppy tropical fruitiness.
2.9Part of a 4 beer flight at TJ Stone , Washington DC in May 2017. Not a bad beer but not me.
2.5Pours a dark rust orange-amber with white head. A watered down aroma of caramel and malts. A caramel, fruit, and malt aroma with some grain. A grainy and sweet caramel malt aftertaste.
3.2This one poops a very rich almost deep red, but it’s clear and clean with a slightly toasted head. It doesn’t have an overwhelming aroma, but what it does have is a nice even blend of malts. The evenness continues in the taste with its lights bitterness and sweetness. It’s a light bodied beer with a thin but somewhat fizzy body. I’m not a big fan of amber ales, but this is one that I could certainly see myself drinking regularly.
2.9Bottle from Chevy Chase Wine and Liquor. Dark red body with medium head. Nose is sweet, malty, plummy. Taste is malts, caramel, plums. Creamy texture, with toasty finish. Pretty good.
3.4I poured it from the bottle into a glass. It pours a nice red with an off-white head. The aroma is caramel and herbal hops. The taste is caramel, bread, and tea. It’s smooth and easy-drinking. The sweetness is subtle and nicely balanced with a slight bitterness.
4.2This is a great beer, it is smooth with a great balance of hops and malt. The color is good and I would recommend it to anyone
4.1This was a really refreshing beer. Good on the front end with a really mild finish.
3.1Rather bland and tart, with simply unbalanced bitterness, comparing to other good beers brewed by Highland
3.1On tap at Swannanoa Gathering at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, NC.
Clear, dark amber with an an off-white head and fair lacing.
Aroma of caramel and bread.
Taste of caramel, bread, toast and very mild floral hops.
Medium body and low/medium carbonation.
A malty beer with little complexity.
3.3Draft at source. Good stuff. Simple. Red. Easy to drink. If had time, would drink more
3.4Pours a bright amber color. Aromas of caramel, malt, and berry. Flavor has a touch of roast coffee taste, some caramel/toffee, and a nice hop finish.
3.5Pours a clear reddish amber color with off-white colored head. Caramel malts, bread, floral notes, and some light hay on the nose; follows onto the palate. Medium bodied. Finishes with decent maltiness.
3.7Pours up a clear dark amber with a slight red tint, and moderate off-white head. Aroma is bready malts, light caramel, mild fruit, with some floral notes. Flavor is malt forward with a touch of caramel sweetness, some dark fruits. Medium body and carbonation. Smooth easy drinking.
3.5Light bodied and easy drinking amber ale. Faint caramel nose and taste. Not much going on. A good beginner beer. No after taste so goes down easy.
3.0Aroma of earthy hops, caramel, toast. Amber clear color with tan head with good retention. Flavors of earthy hop bitterness, caramel, toast, butterscotch and diacetyl. ASTRINGENT palate. High residual bitterness.
3.2Nice unique blend of roasted and bready malts, and bitter hops. Not a favorite red/amber, but not bad.
3.2Bottle pour. Nice Amber color with a half a finger head. Good roasty, malty taste up front, but too much bitterness for me. Okay, but there are better ambers out there.
3.4Pours an expected, amber, with healthy but quickly disappearing light khaki head. Taste is smooth with some roast, sweetness, fruitiness and bitterness. The sweetness is almost artificial but not overpowering, and the toast adds a nice dimension. Overall, easy drinking and flavorful. Pretty good!
3.3Tap @ the Ritz Carlton, Buckhead, Georgia. Lovely red pour with beige head that dies too fast. Light nose of caramel, bakery, and cashews. Tastes very much like it smells. Not perfect but quite nice.
3.7Highland Gaelic Ale is an above average table beer great with food. Moderate aroma of malt rising from a dark brown pour with an ample head. Taste is malty balanced nicely with hop flavors. Gaelic Ale is a great everyday beer but not particularly outstanding.
3.3Draft at a FATZ in Asheville, NC served in a pint glass; clear reddish-amber color with off-white head. Aroma notes of caramel malt sweetness and mild citrus hops. Taste adds some bread, fruitiness and faint spice. Light body, moderate-low carbonation, crisp, dry with clean sweet finish. Good amber ale, better than average.
