Earl (1911-1985) was our grandfather’s brother; Hill Farmstead Brewery rests upon the land that was once home to him and his 13 siblings. In his honor, this Stout is crafted from American malted barley, Flaked Oats, English roasted malts, American hops, Organic Guatemalan Coffee, our ale yeast, and water from our well. It is unfiltered and naturally carbonated. A silhouette of coffee and malt - an embodiment of complexity and drinkability, this is the ale that I dream to have shared with Earl.
7.2% ALC/VOL 18º P Ingredients: Pale, Caramel, and Chocolate Malt, Roasted Barley, Columbus hops; Ale Yeast, and our Well Water.

4.2Draft at Armsby Abbey. Pours black with a thick khaki head. Leaves a lot of lacing in the glass. Nice coffee and chocolate notes on the nose and tongue. Very quaffable.
4.1Near black with a dense yellowish head; aroma is malty with some coffee. Taste is immensely satisfying; big mouth feel, caramel, toffee, and coffee. Top notch.
4.3On tap at Gold Star Beer Counter. Pours a dark brownish black. Super complex aroma - beans, coffee, chocolate. Medium bodied - malty balance. Very smooth. Excellent.
3.9I would gladly replace my morning coffee with this. I can’t imagine it would improve my productivity
4.420/XI/17 - 500ml bottle @ home - BB: n/a, bottled: I/13/16 (2017-1898) Thanks to ElManana+1 for sharing the bottle!
Clear purple brown beer, nice creamy beige to brown head, little stable, bit adhesive, leaving some lacing in the glass. Aroma: lots of chocolate, some coffee, very intense, sweetish impression, dried fruits, touch of vanilla. MF: soft carbon, smooth creamy texture, medium to full body. Taste: pretty roasted, lots of chocolate, some mocha, caramel, sweet touch, soft roast, malty. Aftertaste: pretty bitter, roasted, cocoa powder, some coffee, alcohol, bit sourish. Nice one!
4.2Dégustée au printemps 2017 sur place (De mes notes). .
4.0Dark brown w tan head. A super slow gusher - and it showed in a highly carbonated prickly feel, which took some away from the otherwise decadent smooth roasty aroma and flavor. Another very good HF beer that just didn’t blow me away.
3.6*1/16/2013
750ml growler poured into a Jester King snifter
A~ black as night with a nice creamy head
S~ straight oatmeal coffee, with roasted malts
T~ dark chocolate coffee with a nice bitterness. roasted dark fruits as well
M~ not too heavy which i like in a porter but still a really nice consistency. nice carbonation. low rating just because its not very "stouty" to me
O~ a really good oatmeal coffee porter for sure. i could compare it to a lighter Highland Oatmeal porter without the coffee of course. would definitely like a few bottles to keep IN hand ::see what i did there:: lol
EDIT:
bottled edition.
as i stated before it drinks like a porter. its like they took Everett, dumped a whole lot of oats in it. along with a little bit of coffee and theres totally nothing wrong with that! very delicious and smooth! it goes down way too easily!
4.2This is a really great coffee stout, serenely smooth, coffee-forward yet never one-note, just great stuff overall, reminding that Shaun is a master of many arts.
3.9Robust black pour with one finger of espresso brown head. Pretty. I get blackstrap molasses and burnt sugar in the aroma. Rich coffee and dark fruit skins. Bitter black coffee in the flavor. Full bodied and coating on the palate. Black cherry skins and currant on the finish.
4.0500ml bottle (thx, Jonathan J.!) shared with mom. Bottled on Dec-2016. Pours a very dark brown with a huge dark brown head. Aroma is roasted malt, coffee, some hops. Taste is slightly sweet, some fruitiness, coffee, roasted malt. Good stuff.
4.1500mL bottle. Pours black with a medium tan head. Aroma is lots of coffee and roast and cocoa. Taste is coffee, roast, oats, caramel, and a little vanilla. Bitter, roasty finish. Medium/medium-full body. Soft carbonation. Thick-ish, creamy, somewhat sticky mouthfeel.
4.1Draft pour on tap at Fools Gold (New York City, NY). Deep blackish hue, dark and near opaque with frothy brown head. Good ringer, solid lacing. Aromas cocoa, coffee, oatmeal, roast. A bit of caramel but more bitter, toasty. Initial is medium bodied, a touch more full. Toasty, roasty, caramelized yet creamy. Bitter yet flavorful. An espresso, cocoa dusting. Caramel, a touch ofcoretzel. Firm body yet the nature occur roast and bitter flow, creamy middle seem to make it fliw realltbnicelt. Real nice stuff.
4.2Bottle to chalice. Oily jet black with a short lived brown head. Nose is slight char, little vanilla, hint of coffee. Palate is delicately balanced coffee, caramel, maybe a little marshmallow sugary sweetness. Mouth feel is an interesting experience starting smooth and creamy, penetrated by a fine carb, finishing warm and pleasantly boozy. Sticky lips. Wow, now I understand what a stout should be.
3.7Tap@Proletariat, NYC
Opaque brown color, tiny brownish head. Aroma is toasted with cocoa and vanilla. Medium to full-bodied. Lots of cocoa and coffee in the toasted flavor. Smooth and balanced.
4.1Delicious. Lots of mild coffee. Creamy from oats and sweet. How is this not a sweet stout? Patrick, thanks again! Delicious.
3.6[2/5/17] Bottle at Amit’s place in Poughkeepsie. Thanks Amit. Black with a big tan head. Aroma of coffee, roast. Sweetish-bitterish flavor, light sourish roasty note. Rounded mouthfeel. Very nice.
4.0Bardzo prosty, lekki, pijalny Stout z mega fajnym profilem kawy. Świetna paloność, długi, bogaty w gorzką czekoladę finisz. Mógłbym pić szklankami.
4.0500ml bottle purchased at Hill Farmstead. Pours black with a big, thick mocha head with frothy micro bubbles leaving huge lacing. Smells like straight coffee, espresso beans, smooth oats and malted barley. Tastes like smooth quality coffee, roasted barley. Delicious. Great full, carbonated mouthfeel. Another banger from Hill. Good Job.
4.0500 ml bottle to snifter, dated 08.17.15 (shared with the Mrs; thanks DuffMan). Looks good; a slightly translucent dark brownish cola with foamy beige head. Smells and tastes good too; a nice balance of dark malt, chocolate, hops, coffee, and mild roast. Mouthfeel is medium-bodied and pleasantly bitter. A delicious stout.
4.2Got in a BIF from oline73. 500 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 1/13/2016. Pours pitch black color with a 2 finger dense dark brown head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted oats, caramel, dark bread, toffee, herbal, and floral; with lighter notes of pepper, nuttiness, smoke, char, dark fruit, and roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt, coffee, and moderate earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted oats, caramel, dark bread, toffee, herbal, and floral; with lighter notes of pepper, nuttiness, smoke, char, dark fruit, and roast/toasted earthiness. Moderate roast/char and herbal/spicy hop bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted oats, caramel, dark bread, toffee, herbal, floral, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, coffee, and moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great roast/hop bitter/sweet balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light dryness from roast/hop bitterness, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky/bready, and lightly sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is awesome. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is an outstanding oatmeal stout! All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, coffee, and moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to drink. The coffee has faded a fair amount as expected given the bottle dating; but this is still a wonderfully well balanced, complex, and spot on example of the style. A highly enjoyable offering.
4.022 oz bottle shared by Huhzubendah, thanks Matt! Black with light tan head. Aromas of dark chocolate, roasty notes, light vanilla. Tastes of dark chocolate, roasty notes, caramel. Full body with a dry finish. Nice stout.
3.8Some sharp roast notes and dark chocolate. Light coffee. Black pour with good head and lacing. Bitter finish with caramel note. Bottle thanks to Hauzebender or whatever Matts handle is.
3.4Thanks Huhzubendah for sharing the bottle! Poured into a snifter
showing coffee rims, black center, and a finger of clean white foam.
The nose shows extremely deep and intense roasted coffee notes. This is a big one.
The palate is moderately carbonated and light bodied. Very light flavors of coffee with a burnt bitterness on the finish. Very thin on the palate and a big disjunct between the nose and palate, but not bad.
3.7Due to artificial lighting, arbitrary rating for Appearance. Slightly aged sample Pouring viscously. Toffee, coffee beans from the chocolate shop, and some real coffee. Sweet chocolate, mocha, coffee. Finish yields more bitter coffee, café glacé. Well-bodied, slickness with the velvet from oatmeal. Quite good stout with a lot of coffee. Thanks to M & L V!
3.9Bottle @ ZZT 2016-1. Black pour. Aroma of roasted coffee and cacao. Nice taste of coffee, licorice, roasted creamy malt and mocha. I like this.
