3.7 Oily with a shiny light brown head. Light aroma hints with a very mellow chocolaty palate. A tiny bit of chili, orange liquor á la grand marnier... Still very light foreplay but the aftertaste is satisfying. I appreciate its oily look and mouthfeel a lot. A timid beer with a unique flavour character.. easy digestable/palatable and wonderfully balanced with a slight alcohol touch but rich flavour. Mjam
4.4 "had an awesome tasting last night - this was one of several VERY good brews. possibly my favorite. impy stout with citrus...came across as a good thick rich impy stout, with everything you’d want in the style, with the additional expert blending of subtle black ipa characteristics. LOVEd this beer!"
4.0 Tasted on 2/8/14 from a 500mL bottle at the RBWG Grand Tasting, huge thanks to jackl for sharing!! Pours opaque dark brown with an average brown head that leaves an average collar of lace. The nose is dark chocolate orange, just like the orange chocolates from around Easter, with a touch of molasses and vanilla. The flavor is just like one of those Easter chocolates with all of the bitter dark chocolate up front and zesty orange on the back of the palate. The body is full with light carbonation and a long bitter dark chocolate and orange candy finish.
4.0 Bottle from Mane Liquor ;) Pours black with a filthy tanned head - swirl this one for days. Nose is quite vanilla dominant - not an awful lots of citrus but dry cocoa and earthy make up for it. Sweet vanilla and white choc run through the taste with a slight juicy mouthfeel. Something unusual for an imp. stout. Nutty finish to balance out with the sweetness. 10% hidden accordingly. Does become evident as it warms but that adds to the character of the beer. Great stuff
3.9 Bottle with a big thanks to Lukey. Pours black with a dirty khaki head which sits and swirls around like it should. Nose has that familiar vanilla strain I only find in the absolute top class stouts. Can’t say there is much citrus there but the earthiness and dry cocoa feel to this one is very appealing. Kind of a juiciness in the taste which adds something different while a sweet vanilla and white chocolate strain runs through the middle. Sweet but it goes well with a nuttiness throughout. Very creamy body and you can’t tell this is 10%. As it warms the booze comes out a little more but in that nice way where booze warms the inside like a good scotch. Classy stuff
3.7 Aroma: Chocolate, Mildly Burnt Chocolate, Mild Mint Appearance: Dark Opaque Hue, Passes No Light, Extremely Thin Brown Hue, Passes No Light, No Lacing Taste: Chocolate, Mild Citrus, Mildly Minty Mouthfeel: Average Carbonation, Medium to Full Bodied, Mildly Bitter
4.1 Bottle. Almost black in color with a mocha colored head. Dark chocolate, bit of wood and ashy notes too in aroma. Later some orange peel as well. Interesting. Sweetish milk chocolatey taste, roasted notes and orange in flavor. Creamy mouthfeel, quite delightful. Roasted ashy aftertaste. Nice, dark and rich on the whole.
3.6 Bottle at home caramel, citrus, chocolate, coffee, roasty, spruce, black, hazy, minimal head, brown foam, medium sweetness, medium bitterness, medium sourness, full body, creamy, thick feel, soft carbonation, long finish,
2.9 Shared. Had it warm. Has a hot aroma but flavor isn't hot at all. Not getting any citrus. Just a bit over meh.
3.1 Not getting a lot of citrus with it. Maybe bitterness of orange peel? Regardless, this is a great stout.
3.6 05.07.2014, 0,5l bottle @ home: 21.01.2013, 0,5l bottle @ Mikkeller Bar: Nice light brown creamy mediumlasting head. Aroma is slightly rich, sweet licorice, sour coffee, dark malts, dark sugar, grass, caramel, dried dark fruits, soy sauce, alcohol, citrus. Taste is slightly sour-ish, dark malts, sour coffee, dried dark fruits, licorice, grass, caramel, citrus, dark sugar, alcohol. Medium bitterness, slightly dry and watery mouthfeel. Nice, and overall a little better now than it was before. Even though the mouthfeel has become a little watery, the notes of unripe banana and ashes that I didn’t like in the taste is now gone.
4.1 Black of color with a brown head. An aroma of roasted malt, liqurice, weak sweets and dusty. A flavor of roasted malt, prunes, hops and dry.
3.1 Pre-DLD bottle share at Hampton Inn. Pour is black with no head. Aroma of orange peel, coffee, caramel, spice, and grass. Flavor is similar but with more ash/roast in there. I didn’t like this one too much.
4.0 500 ml. bottle. Thanks Kai. Pours black with a nice tan head. Aroma of malt, chocolate, fruit, and coffee. Taste is roasted malt, chocolate, citrus, dark fruit, and coffee. Very well balanced. Very good.
3.9 Tap at the Mikkeller bar... Deep black... Thin tan lacing... Dark roast... Big alcohol... Meaty malts...... Nose... Big meaty malts nose... Dark roast heavy malts nice but little too much alcohol
3.7 50 cl bottle @ home. Pours black with some sediment and a tan head that leaves a little lacing. Aroma and flavour are chocolate, oranges, coffee, and liquorice - with a slightly bitter finish.
3.9 Pour pitch black, with a small n’ creamy mocha-tan head. Aroma is pretty roasted, which settles a little when this warms up a bit. Roasted coffee, bitter chocolate, licorice and ever so slightly orange/green notes somewhere.. The taste is pretty bitter, with a faint sweet touch up front. Medium bodied, with a slightly flat carbonation. Pretty well balanced.
4.1 Nice black pour. Good lacing and a tan dense head. The nose is big on licorice, tobacco and flowers.. even some sherry fruityness. Creamy palate that gets less fizzy after a short while. Taste is sweet roasted malts, chocolate and really dark berries somewhere well hidden. Great aftertaste mostly on licorice and roasted malt. Big thanks to my man Motherbrother for sharing. Boss!
4.1 Bottled. Pours black with a small, lacing tan head. Arom of roasted malt, dark fruit, coffee, chocolate and smoked notes. Sweet flavor that ends up more dry with some alcohol. Full to medium bodied, oily texture and soft carb. A great impy.
4.1 500ml bottle thanks to Glouglouburp in a tulip. Pours black with a beige head. Aroma of roasted malts, light citrus, chocolate and coffee, and some dough. Flavor the same with a great blend. Smooth texture. Another great HF beer. Wish I got to try this fresh, but glad that thanks to a friend I got to try it at all!
3.7 Bottle thanks to Jack at the RBWG 2014 grand tasting, thanks! Pours near black with a dark brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has very dark grains, bitter chocolate, roasted malts and a bit of citrus. Flavor has smooth dark grains, with a bit of growing roast and a hint of citrus.
3.6 Finally tried at rbwg. A nice surprise to see this here. Nose is fairly roasty, light peanut, orange zest and a bit of booziness akin to a heavy screwdriver. Flavor is similar- nicely balanced but does not taste extremely fresh. Okay, but I always, underlined, expect more when I know Hill Farm is involved. Hope I can try a fresher sample someday. Thanks to whomever shared this gem!
3.4 RBWG Winter Gathering, Asheville, courtesy of someone. Pours a black color with white head. Roasty; chocolate, malty sweet flavors. Pretty solid.
4.3 Very last bit of a 500ml bottle. Very dark brown, near black color. Nice thin lighter brown head, couple dots of lace. Smooth, lighter carbonation. More dry finish. MMmm... Awesome bigger coffee aroma, good dark chocolate. Moderate bitter taste, lighter sweet. Fantastic velvety smooth chewy texture to this. Bigger body. Alcohol well hidden. Citrus is subtle, for me, but some light orange chocolate citrus is noticeable. Probably a good thing. Very interesting stuff. Fantastically smooth.
3.9 Bottle pour opaque black. Nose roast, chocolate, and citrus. Taste very silky smooth up front, chocolate, Mild citrus fruit. Smooth finish as well.
4.1 Bottle @ RBWG. Pours a black appearance with a brown head. Somewhat spicy piney hoppy, thick chocolate, a touch fruity aroma. Well balanced. Dark chocolate. A bit of fruits. Delicious.
3.9 Bottle courtesy of "hannont". Colour...black with a thin tan head. Nose...somewhat soy like but not in a bad way. There’s something coffee like too and just a smidge of burnt orange. Palate...dry, oaky, and tannic. Rather thin on the mouthfeel but that doesn’t distract from the flavour profile which includes dark chocolate, chocolate sirop and day old coffee. Not much citrus on the palate, but that’s ok.
4.3 Pours black with low deep tan head. Aroma of molasses, coffee, light citrus bitter, some dried dark fruit. Taste is very chocolate intense with light balancing bitterness and hints of citrus. Lingering coffee and chocolate finish. Very roasty. Full creamy body that manages to stay very light and crisp.
4.4 Pours black with no head. Aroma is very well balanced with chocolate, honey, muscovado sugar, honey, vanilla. Taste is honey, milk chocolate, roasted malts, honey, dried figs, molasses. Aftertaste is coffee, honey, muscovado sugar. Insanely well balanced and just a fantastic stout!!
3.9 Bottle from International Trade; dark brown pour with thin tan head, coffee aroma, taste is coffee sweet chocolate, sweet with a hint of citrus.
