3.9 Black coloured and with a light-brown head, lasting. Sweet, roasted aroma, with delicate notes of orange and vanilla.
4.2 Bottle. Black colour with virtually no head. aroma is roasted malt. Sweet spicy flavor. Creamy palate.
4.2 Bottle. Creamy lightbrown good mostly lasting head. Black colour. Heavy malty and moderate hoppy aroma. Moderate bitter flavor. Nice vanilla notes. Long heavy bitter finish. Creamy palate. World class well balanced beer.
3.7 Bottle. Aroma is awesome. Orange candy, chocolate, dark fruit, and oak. Taste a little sweet up front but gets a little bitter and dry in the finish. Lots orange and chocolate throughout. Light booze in the finish. Solid but comes off a little artificial sometimes. Like chocolate covered orange pez.
3.0 375 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Originally reviewd 4/21/2014. Very inky black. Impenetrably dark. Small khaki head. Wispy surface. Intense roasted malt aroma. Oak. Lots of both. Not an intense amount of citrus, but it’s there. Taste is also intensely roasty. Bright orange flavor. Gets extremely oaky without any abatement in the roast. Dry ashy finish. Funny fruity finish. Abrasive. Very bitter. Very roasty. Medium body. It’s a shame. The concept seemed so good and the original beer was so good, but this isn’t working so well.
4.0 Bottled. Black, minimal head. Aroma of chocolate and orange. Sweet with full body and soft mouthfeel. Soothingly creamy with chocolate and licorice. Orange blossom. Mild and rich.
3.9 Bottle. Black beer with an brownish head. Roasted chocolate licorice oranges Woody aroma. Roasted chocolate oranges coffee licorice citrus Woody flavour with cointreu notes. Lovely :-)
4.3 Bottle split two ways. Pitch black pour with a dark tan head. Nose has some pleasant orange notes, roast and licorice. Taste has roast, some licorice, cocoa with some light hints of orange filled pralines. Very good!
3.6 Very dark brown pour with a tan head. The aroma is full of chocolate, ash and some heavily roasted malt. The flavor is very similar. I get a ton of chocolate and roasted malt up front with a bit of smoky ash notes. As I dug deeper into the beer I started to see some leathery undertones and a strong orange liqueur character that really complemented the other notes. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.
3.6 Bottle: Thanks, Ryan. Oily, dark brown pour. Black in the glass with a small, leathery tan layer of bubbles on top. Aroma is a nice, complex layering of roasted malt, coffee beans, soft orange citrus peel, musty wood, & a nice waft of that typical smokiness that I get from most Mikkeller stouts. Bitter chocolate flavor with lots of espresso, smoked malt, ash, just a light kiss of orange peel near the finish. A bit of alcohol comes through with a touch of licorice, smoke, & coffee. Slightly oily mouth feel, moderate creaminess to it. Enjoyed this a little bit more than the first batch. Nice stuff.
3.9 This one poured a very dark brown to black with a beige head. Aroma was big dark chocolate, roasted malt and light orange Peel. Flavor was similar, orange was only slightly there, still a pretty good.imperial stout, but the barrel didn’t add very much.
4.0 Smells like faint citrus and malt. Taste is pretty much the same. Medium body with medium carbonation.
3.9 Bottle shared by beerman6686 at the bachelor party. Pours a dark brown to black with a slight brown head. Aromas of chocolate and light orange. Alcohol. Taste is sweet with a light alcohol burn. Medium thick body. Low carb.
4.2 Bottle shared thanks to Dan. Poured black min tan head. Aroma charred vanilla light citrus. Light carb med bod. Sweet dry bitter choc taste.
3.6 Bottle from HF. Pours black with brown/copper hues...fairly opaque. Aromas of char, chocolate malt, orange liquor, wet oak and anise. Taste is thinner than I expected. Slightly oily in nature the mouthfeel is slick. I get faint amounts the the orange liquor, with dark malted sweetness dominating. Cocoa, wet oak, carob, earth and light notes of roast. Solid stuff.
3.9 Thick dark brown, ringed creamy light brown head. Sweet brisk quality street centering orange, light pithy nose. Dank citrus amongst a very rich roast muddied malt - but in a good way. There’s little richness to the orange somewhere but it’s not super pronounced, carries things along with a soft and firm mouthfeel. Finishes clean, pitter of sweet fleshy roast. Bottle, 10pm Curfew Tasting, Cheers BenHhhHhhhH
4.1 Bottle. Black with tan head. Roasty ashy aroma, coffee, chocolate. Taste is super roasty and ashy. Full bodied and clean
4.0 Bottle at Craig’s. Pours black, nose is chocolate, orange, roasted, taste is roasted chocolate, coffee, sweet.
3.9 Bottle at Craig’s. Pours dark brown with a thin tan head. Aromas of chocolate and orange. Taste is more of the same. Finishes sweet, orange.
3.8 Shared 375 ml bottle at local tasting. Pitch black colour, low tan head. Nice roasty aroma, notes of molasses, coffee and liquorice, also plenty of oak and orange liqueur The flavour is not too sweet, roasty coffee notes, discrete hints of orange in the background.
2.8 Shared bottle at RB/HD at Bjørnøy 07.02.15. Very dark brown. Small brown head. Herbal aroma of star anise, cough syrup and alcohol. Similar taste, with orange and vanilla. Liquorice in aftertaste. Decent drinkability for such a high ABV.
4.0 Shared bottle at local tasting. Pours pitch black with a small creamy tanned head. Aroma is deep dark malty, treacle and citrus. Taste is light sweet complex malty, with vanilla, chocolate, raisins and oranges in the front seat, light sticky mouthfeel, lingering weak bitter coffee and treacle, very good one.
4.0 Shared bottle at RBHD Bjørnøy February 2015. Black body with a light brown rim. Roasted raisins, orange zest on the nose. Pungent roasted flavors, roasted raisin, dried fruits, vanilla. Full bodied and creamy smooth. Long coffee finish.
4.2 Bottle. Pours a deep faintly amber espresso color with a small dense head the color of burnt toffee. Aroma is quite rich with bitter chocolate and faint orange and yuzu zest leading the way along with roasted barley, cocoa, oak, and herbal vermouth-like fumes. Taste is bitter chocolate with bright acidity, almost like Central American coffee, along with red wine, faint orange liqueur, tobacco, and wood. Very dry and elegant. I don’t get a ton of citrus here and to me, that’s a good thing. Mild toasted marshmallow sweetness. Medium to light palate for the style but with an oily smoothness. Intense and austere stuff – very good.
4.0 Bottle... Poured jet black with a thin head. Strong roast and char characters, earthy oak, bread-like grains, and dark chocolate. A hint of citrus/orange popped in too. Seems like most of the barrel chardcter dropped out now but what’s left is a pretty amazing beer.
4.1 Bottle shared at the July 2014 chriso tasting - London. Pours black-brown with a lasting, frothy beige head - looks outstanding. The nose holds lots of charred wood, dirt, milk chocolate, burnt cereal. Medium sweet flavor with scorched earth bitterness, ripe fruits, old leather, oily chocolate. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation and creamy texture. Nicely balanced to close, with more charred wood, oily fruits, baking cocoa, strong roast. Solid. Good depth, great balance.
3.9 Bottle. Tried when it was release and a year after, ratings is for the aged bottle. Black pour with small head. Aroma is straightforward: chocolate, roasted malt, citrus and oak. The orange liqueur barrel is more present in the taste and it makes the beer sweeter. There is roasted malts and citrus but it has faded a bit. It was slightly better when fresh.
3.5 375ml bottle. Opaque, jet black colour with small to average, thick, creamy, more than half-way lasting, moderately lacing, ochre-brown head. Intense roasty dark malty aroma, notes of coffee and dark chocolate, citrusy hop notes, very cautious hints of orange liqueur (Grand Marnier), interspersed with alcoholic, husky, resolvent (if not hooch) hints. Taste is roasty dark malty, sweet chocolately, minimally nuttily, hints of Grand Marnier, orange, bitter orange, booze. Way too alcoholic, a sweet, orange flavoured praliné.
3.8 Feels quite silky smooth with quite intense roasted malt notes, lovely choco notes, cocoa nibs. Can’t catch a lot of orange nor liqueur barrel, more like dried fruits, some raisins. Orange with some bit weird very light acidic sourness comes lingering only in finish, but anyways - I feel it bit lacks in body or in aftertaste. Very decent and enjoyable, but..
