4.0 OK, maybe they got me with the ceramic bottle and flip-top.....but I really liked this beer. This was when I was first getting into Belgian’s, but this resembles a porter more than a Belgian Ale. It does have that "Belgian" taste though, from the kind of yeast they use maybe? Is it worth $10 for a 750ml?....probably not, but I am not complaining b/c it was very tasty and a good experience. Don’t know if I’d buy again for that coin, but if you haven’t tried yet and money isn’t really an object, I would recommend at least sampling this beer.
3.7 750cc bottle. Lovely dark brown and reddish colour. On the sweet side. Hints of molasses and maple syrup. A bit nutty also. Some bitterness in the end. Very pleasant.
3.2 Pours a dark amber-red with a respectable but short-lived frothy head. Good lacing with a light aroma reminiscent of raspberry. Smooth flavor of light grains quickly transitioning to blackberry and raspberry. A liytle on the watery side. Not a true porter by any means, but not altogether bad either.
2.1 "probably a bad bottle, but as it was my first time trying it, i’ll have to rate it from the one time. upon opening, the beer exploded out of the heavy ceramic bottle, and continued to overflow for several minutes. i was able to pour it with two fingers of head. i wasn’t expecting a traditional porter (which it is not), but i don’t know if the funkiness was on purpose or if the beer was totally spoiled, as i had no frame of reference. i was looking forward to trying a belgian porter, but as we had it, it poured thin, smelled funky, if not spoiled, had a thin mouthfeel and a rather unique, but ultimately boring flavor...like a flanders/porter hybrid. maybe i’ll try it again one day to see if what we had was a true representation of this beer, but at the price, it may be a while."
3.3 Pours out dark with an oily skin of a head. Dried fruit aroma , hint of molasses. Taste is on the sweet side, fruit, sugar. Taste dissipated quickly, overall mouthful is slightly watery.
3.4 Bottle 0,5l. A ceramic swing top bottle. Pours a deep amber brown colour with tan head and leaves a great lace. Aromas of toasty malt and chocolate. Tastes sweet and chocolatey up front, followed by some bitterness on the end.
3.3 One of Sterkens’s ’pitcher beers’, tasted as Hoogstraten Poorter; dense, stable head and warm bronze colour; fruity and malty aroma, bit straightforward but enjoyable, with some roasted bitterness in the finish. A bit like a downtuned Scotch, still one of the better Sterkens beers I had.
3.5 Bottle in Santa Barbara My father picked this one out; I don’t think I’ve ever seen it in Washington state. Dark pour, very little head. Pretty nice nose, chocolate and just a touch of porter vinous sourness; a belgian yeast thing and more smoke than I would have expected. Flavor is just a little bit sweet, baker’s chocolate and again those vinous notes. A bit thin would be my main complaint. My wife was very impressed and stole my glass. I go a bit against the grain here and actually think this was nice.
3.6 Pours dark brown with a fairly large head that however dissipates quickly, leaving an uneven thin foam on top of the beer. Malt, roasted coffee aroma. Pleasantly roasted flavour, though the flavour seems a bit alcoholic for "only" 6½%. Decent enough, but not earth-shattering.
3.2 Swing top bomber bottle. Aroma is sweetly skunk with some darkness. Appearance is dark brown with a tan head. Taste is European sweet with some dark skunkiness. Palate is pretty neutral. Overall, a decent beer. Very European.
3.0 Dark amber colour, medium carbonation. Aroma of sweet caramel and dark fruit. Easy drinkable. Bit thin body.
2.6 Pours a dark black with fizzy light brown head. Aroma is a mix of toffee, prunes, and other dark fruits. Taste is watered down (but flavorful) with prunes, raisins, other dark fruits, and sweet malt.
2.8 Chiamiamola porter belga o dubbel molto originale, ma niente di eccezionale comunque. Gusto che riechegga i malti tostati, con note di frutta scura e una dolcezza pervasiva da canditi. Gradevole.
2.9 Bottle , pours thin black with a white head . Dark fruit and moderate sweetness . Cheap cola aftertaste . Not my favorite .
3.3 Sampled at esbls. Medium brown with a ligjt tan head. This has the distinct flavor of a porter from that region. Grape jelly flavor with roasted notes. Not a gret porter.
3.8 Pours a clear dark ruby amber with a big frothy 4" head that slowly goes away, thick curving sheets of lace. Taste is lightly spiced sweet caramel malt with a twist of dark fruit and earthy bread. Slightly chalky on the roof of the mouth, but still drinks easily. The finish includes a carbonation edge that brings things back into balance. Slightly off the beaten path,...and quite good. Recommended.
3.4 Looks like a brown ale in the glass as opposed to a porter. Funky fruit and some leather aromas. Spicy yeast and toasted dark bread notes followed by a dryness on the palate. Overall, nice... I dig the large ceramic bottle too! Thanks to jmoore102 for bringing it to the tasting.
3.4 Smell of dark fruit, candy, malt. Subdued taste, a fair amount of carbonation, combined with sweetness that gives this a vague cola quality.
3.6 75cl ceramic bottle shared with Steve.Poured a nice dark ruby brown and sported a huge tan head.Sweet dark malt and dried fruit aromas with a little spiciness too.Tastes of sherry and chocolate with butterscotch and nutmeg also in there.Tasty and easy to drink beer which improves as it warms.
3.4 This Belgium porter poured a deep reddish brown with a short lived light tan head. No lacing seen. The aroma was somewhat of fruity with a hint of sweetness. The mouth feel was medium and smooth. Balance between malts and hops was in favor of the malt - no hippiness detected. The initial taste was much the same as the nose followed by a slight alcohol aftertaste and a pleasant burn. All-in-all, this was good beer that I would buy again.
3.8 Pours dark amber almost unclear with a huge frothy tan head. The aroma brings sweet matls and a bit of sweet fruit. The flavor brings spicy Belgian yeast, sweet ester banana notes, and some honey flavors that settle on the tongue. The body is medium, right on for the style.
4.5 hay, spruce, woody, rotten eggs, cough drop, butterscotch, licorice, smoke, brown, brown foam, rocky head, clear, medium sweetness, very bitter, heavily sour, umami, full body, creamy, oily feel, astringent, average carbonation,
3.7 Into its own snifter at just on cool. Big Belgian head is mostly lasting atop a bright ruby cola body. A rocky, loose, frothy off-white mess that laces well. There is a hint of Belgian yeast and sherry on the nose amongst layers of chocolate and dark, woody malts, raisins and dried dates, cocoa and lightly roasted coffee beans, yum. Creamy and full well rounded mouthfeel. Flavours of sweet sherry, madeira, oak, smoky charred wood, cola and a late hint of nutmeg spice. Nice, silky malty length only heightened by some sneaky alcohol warmth. A favourite of mine so I have a soft spot for this one. Lovely drinking, and better as it warms. Delicious. 3.0 Ceramic bottle. Dark brown pour with a massive tan head. Three inches plus. Aroma is fruity. Taste is some roasted malts and some fruit. Body is light and despite the large head, so is the carbonation.
3.2 As Hoogstraten Porter. Clear dark brown with a lasting beige head. Aroma is sweet, dark malt, light roasted malt, dried fruit and spicy. Flavor is medium sweet and light bitter. Dry and light bitter finish. 071011
3.6 Cloudy reddish brown, large foaming head. Rich fruity nose, alot of pineapple and indistinct tropical fruit. Flavor similar but turns towards a semidry cocoa element at the finish. Somewhat full bodied with a fluffy carbonation. Decent beer.
3.2 Pours a dark brown with an off whtie head. Chocolaty aroma along with some vanilla. Nice flavor with chocolate and some funkiness.
3.7 500mL ceramic swing top bottle. Pours a deep amber brown color with tan head and lovely lace. Aromas of toasty malt and chocolate. Tastes sweet and chocolatey up front, followed by some bitterness on the end. A little harsh, but I still enjoyed drinking this one.
3.2 jug at dak’s on 8/14/10. pours a pale orange tinted porter brown with a tannish off white cap. it smells and tastes a lot like the kruikenbier... flowers, malt, doughy grain, raisins and spicy hops. it is prickly and dry with a medium body. again, meh. 6/3/6/3/13
3.2 Hoogstraten Poorter Pours dark Mahogany with a medium tan head. Good retention, but does not resemble its namesake. Aroma of raisins, a little metal, yeasty funk, and some some vanilla. Nice. Flavor is somewhat metallic. Very smooth flavor with a bubbly mouth. Notes of yeast, cried fruits and earthy malts.
