4.3 I drank the not-barrel-aged yesterday and then drank the barrel aged version today. Both 22 oz. bottles. I liked the first but the barrel aging did some real good. the spices were blended more smoothly into the mix. That slight bourbon taste really elevates this beer to the next level. Oh so Christmasy! I don't generally like "stuff" in my beer, but for the holidays? Sure. It's the beer equivalent of mulled wine and it's not a bad thing. Malty, spicey and really fun.
4.2 Pours into a snifter a blood copper color with sparse foam. Scent of whiskey soaked gingerbread are strongly prevalent. The flavor is hearty and malty, hints of nutmeg and cinnamon. Back end is smooth, yet has slight Kentucky burn. Much superior to the Boris bb Stout in terms of complex bourbon barrel nuance and palate. A solid seasonal warmer. Cheers Hoppin Frog!
3.7 Dark amber/cider color; Medium creamy body; Aroma of sweet malt, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, & some fruit; Flavor of sweet malt, caramel, molasses/syrup, cinnamon, some nutmeg, fruit, and whiskey/bourbon notes; Warm finish; A bit too sweet - but still pretty decent.
3.6 Bottle a dark brown colored beer with a white head aroma malts caramel spicy dried fruits anise and hops flavor malts spicy caramel dried fruits hops and some anise in the aftertaste

4.1 Appearance: Medium chestnut brown. Hazy. Thin head of small white bubbles. Nose: Sweet malt, caramel, bourbon, vanilla, clove and touch of nutmeg. Taste: Initially sweet, heavy with booze and caramel. Resolving into the more subtle spice and oak aspects. Body: medium and silky. Decent carbonation Parting thoughts: A big Christmas. The barrel aging lends some very complimentary notes to the typical spice and malt.
3.0 22oz bottle. Poured a hazy amber color with a smaller sized off white head. I noted down - I really don’t like spices. I was hoping the barrel aging would kill some of it, but lots of spice.
3.4 Draft at Bronx Ale House. Nice rich Christmas brew. Vanilla, clove, bourbon, caramel, a little pipe tobacco. Good but not the best from HF, and well overpriced at $12 for a 9 oz snifter. HF could lower their prices a bit methinks.
3.5 I love Hoppin Frog, I love Fred Karm, and I’m glad I found this beer. Pours hazy ruby with minimal head. Big cranberry, spice, nutmeg, hops in the nose. Tastes of berries, gingerbread, plum pudding, and sprucey hops. Sweet finish, but appropriate as an X-Mas ale.
3.5 Hazy amber pour with a thin off white head and light lacing .... aroma of cinnamon mostly, other spices like nutmeg and allspice .... taste is mostly spice, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg and some dry oak .... has some a bit of a booze finish ... dry and spicy finish .... tastes much like the usual
3.3 Draft at RnHw with Linh. Pours a deep, murky brown body. Nose is cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla. Mouthfeel is medium to creamy with notes of vanilla and nutmeg. Way too much Yankee Candle character.
2.0 This beer is quite bad. It smells and tastes like some strange mix of dark ale with sweet wine, rancid candy and spice. Just went too far experimenting with this product.
3.6 Bomber. Amber-brownish pour, small off-white head with not much retention. Nose is spice forward (lots of Cinnamon and Ginger), brown sugar, caramel, cedar, bourbon notes. Mouth is medium-full, kinda oily, sweet with a shitload of spice, caramel, toast, dried fruit, booze. Tastes like a gingerbread man who drank too much whiskey at grandma’s house after Thanksgiving dinner. Ringing in the holiday season. Ho,ho,ho. Gonna need aspirin in the morning,
3.4 Brown, no head, smells like fresh christmas cookies, and ginger bread. Taste is dominantly spices, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg. There are toasted malt notes hidden in there too, but it’s under all that spice. The spices are balanced, and though obvious, not too annoying for me. Carbonation is low. After taste has a slight warming from the spice, not very boozy at all for 8.6%.
3.6 Bottle thanks to Leighton. Aroma is huge cinammon, sweet, Christmas spices, little soapy, Yankee candle. Reddy copper coloured pour with a thin off white head. Flavour is sweet, nutty, caramel malts, Christmas cake, with big Christmas spices, cinnamon, ginger, mint. Flavours have rounded out nicely. Palate is full, sweet, viscous, warming alcohol. The couple years of age have done this bottle pretty well.
3.7 Clear brown colour, white head. Spicy aroma, caramel, vanilla, wood, brown sugar, malts. Sweet flavour, brown sugar, spices, cinnamon. Sweet finish, cinnamon, Christmas spices, bourbon, caramel. (from 66cL bottle @ ZZT XI, Oirschot. Bedankt voor het delen, Dré & Angela!)
2.7 Bottle @ ZZT XI. Clear amber color, small off-white head. Smell and taste herbs, spices, cinnamon, sweet, lightly caramel, wood. Decent body and carbonation. Compared to the regular version this is way better. It’s drinkable. But it is a herb, spice mostly cinnamon bomb.
3.7 Bottle @ Zzt’11. Brown color with a small head. Smells and tastes cinnamon, caramel. Nice.
3.6 Bottle @ ZZT11. Clear copper colour with a very small off-white head. Smells cinnamon, rooibos, herbs, spices, sweet. Tastes cinnamon, sweet. Medium to full body, soft carbo.
3.5 (bottle - 22 oz - 2012 vintage) Dark copper pour with a thin white head. Huge spice and caramel aroma. Lots of caramel and a very mild spice in the flavor, and I was pretty sure I could detect some coconut hints in there as well. Big malt bomb with some light spice.
3.8 Bottle thanks to Mikey, is liquid Christmas in your mouth. Little head and lacing. Aromas of apples, cherries, cinnamon, nutmeg, raisins and more mulling spices. Flavor is late fall and Christmas. Yum!!! Oh yeah, and Mikey is also a nut sack!!!!
3.9 Bottle. Pours reddish amber, small tan head, decent lacing. Aroma is hella spicy. Spiced cider, apple, cinnamon. Flavor is a straight up spiced cider, plus some caramel. Medium body. Tasty. Jimmy is a nut sack
4.1 PvW bottle. The pour is a light brown, lighter than I was expecting. The aroma is all holiday spice. The taste is a perfect blend or spice and bourbon. I get a lot of cinnamon. Very impressed with this beer, whether holiday or not.
4.3 Elég ha elcsípünk pár illatmolekulát a bohókás karácsonyi címkéjű üvegben szunnyadó főzet kitöltése során, s tudni fogjuk: a tengerentúlon értenek hozzá, hogyan kell tartalommal megtölteni a "karácsonyi sör" kifejezést. Nem tudom megállni, hogy ne említsem ehelyütt a Play-Doh játékgyurma semmivel össze nem téveszthető illatát, amit ebben sörben a fahéj, szegfűszeg, szerecsendió keblünkre ölelhető aromái képeznek le. Napokig elszaglászhatnánk az italt, betelni akkor sem tudnánk vele. Isteni scotch benyomások, a whiskey-hordóban történő érlelés legjavát nyújtják a kezdeti pikáns zamatok. Sütőtökös pite, bejgli, dió, mazsola ünnepi hangulatai járják be szánknak minden egyes szegletét, páratlanul izgalmas kortyok által megfestett, fűszeresen vibráló ünnepi ínyencségként ejti rabul ízlelőbimbóinkat.
3.9 Bottle (2013 - Silver Cap)... Clear brown pour with ruby highlights and no head. The lush, malty aroma is heavy on the cinnamon and nutmeg with an undercurrent of other spice rack excellence. Medium to full-bodied with lazy carbonation. The flavor furnishes caramel and toffee sweetness interwoven with cinnamon and nutmeg spiciness. Finishes bittersweet and, of course, spice-rack spicy. Very enjoyable. The barrel really helps this beer. Bottle courtesy of darkguardian!
3.2 65 cl bottle @ home. Pours hazy brown with quite a bit of sediment and an off-white head that leaves some lacing. Aroma and flavour are cinnamon, coconut, chocolate, and caramel - with a dry finish.
3.6 Bottle shared at 4th of July BBQ (Lyons, IL). The Pappy Version. Pours a darker brownish ruby hue, copper fiery glow on the edges with some decent haziness in the middle that tapers out. Frothy offwhite head atop stays as a mellow layer, decent lacing and stick around. Aromas show pie spice, cinnamon and firmer ginger meet caramel, touches of caramel, oak and vanillin. Gentle clove and nutmeg meet some whiskey warmth a touch sweet but enjoyable. Initial is a pretty potent mélange of holiday spirit. Touches of cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg meet gentle vanilla, pie spice and caramel show some oomph into the body. Toffee and gentle smoothed out spirit elements work well together. Middle shows a bit more depth, the barrel on full display with vanilla, oak, touches of gingersnaps meeting gentle toasty coconut, some toffee and toastiness. Backend is where this gets a bit warm and harsher, the smoothed out front loses it’s refinement. Finish is dry, a bit warm and spicy as we finish. An interesting beer that certainly offers some enjoyable flavors albeit a bit much for me beyond the small sampling.
3.8 Caramel bruine kleur met een goede crème kraag. Ruikt bijzonder, fruitig, kruiden, kaneel, basterdsuiker. Smaakt bitterkoekjes, kaneel, speculaas, kruiden.
3.6 Pours a dark red brown beer with a good tan head. Smells cinnamon, pepper, spices. Tastes rye, cinnamon, spices. Medium body, average carbo and a sticky texture.
