Hoppin' Frog Bodacious Black & Tan

Hoppin' Frog Bodacious Black & Tan

Our IPA and Stout converge for a really great flavor combination to create a rich and robust black & tan. The assertive hoppy character of our Hoppin to Heaven IPA is perfectly complimented by the intense deep roasted flavor of our BORIS Oatmeal Imperial Stout. Two great tastes that taste even better together.

4.0 Dunkelbraun, fruchtig und röstig im aroma, fruchtig und leichte hopfenbittere, gut ausgewogen,
2.8 04-13-2011. 22 oz bomber. A: Pours pitch black and completely opaque with a huge four fingers of creamy tan head that leaves excellent lacing. S: Wow, definitely hops. Dominant aroma is a floral hop aroma with big juicy fruit notes. Roasted malt is also apparent in the background but is relatively subdued compared to the hops. Definitely smells like a blend of IPA and stout, I’ve never had a beer that really smelled like this before, very different. T: From the outset it’s a blend of stout and IPA flavors. Big citrus flavor from the hops, I’m thinking oranges. Malts provide chocolate and roasted flavors. The finish is dry with a strange roasted character, relatively astringent, as I’m progressing through the bomber the finish keeps getting sharper. M: Medium body, creamy mouthfeel. O: Pretty good, definitely interesting and different but probably not something I could drink all the time.
3.7 Bottle. Pours black with a finger thick mocha head. Aroma is quite hoppy, but with nice burned notes, lactose and leather. Full creamy body with soft carbonation. Flavour is bitter with orange peel, before lots of roasted malts kick in with notes of tobacco and liquorice. Long bitter finish with eucalyptus, as well as some notes of leather. Rather strange, but very nice.
3.7 Poured from a bottle it is a black beer with a tan head. The aroma I’d of licorice the taste is the licorice with chocolate and some sherry overtones. Lingers smooth on the palate.
3.8 From a 22 oz bottle shared at home. Pours black with a tan head. Moderate coffee and chocolate nose. Flavors of licorice. Effervescent mouthfeel. Slight hoppy bitterness in the finish.
3.4 Pours dark dark brown with low off white head Aromas of dark berries, caramel, roasted malts Taste has ipa to it with roasted malts. It is unbalanced.
3.9 New Beer Distributors, NY 650ml ($6.50): Pours black with a small light brown head. Aroma is roasted malts, some melted sugar, some a little liquor or barrel or something like that, but the hops are very subdued in the aroma. Taste is somewhat sweet, bitterness is around toward the finish and aftertaste. The BORIS vastly overshadows the Hoppin to Heaven in my opinion. Imperial stout cut with IPA. Easy to drink, complex.
3.6 Bottle. Pours a dark opaque brown with slight off white head. Aroma of malts and earth. Taste of chocolate and earth with a hint of alcohol.
3.6 Bottle to tulip, pours dark brown with a small kahki head. My first black and tan (other than Yuengling). I am assuming this bottle is a little older than is optimal, but that's OK. Aroma is really interesting. Pine and citrus up front with string sweet roasted malt notes and hints of chocolate and molasses. Flavor is big sweet notes, followed by lingering roast. Only a bit of bitter pine, and it is just a bit overly sweet, but not undrinkable. Medium slick mouthfeel with adequate carbonation. Cool beer.
3.6 Pours a dark deep black color. Nose is malt and chocolate, with a small scent of alcohol. Taste is well balanced between the hops and malt. Finish is sweet with a mild bitter ending. quaff score 7 / 10
3.8 Pours black with a brown head and aroma of chocolate and roasted malt. Taste is well balanced, nice notes of roasted malt, chocolate, hops, and light fruit with a dry, long finish. Interesting beer
3.7 Pours black with a thick tan head...nice lacing and retention. Aroma has some roast and citrus and light hoppy spice...hint of tea. Flavor has notes of coffee and molasses with some earthy pine and light citrus accents. Mouthfeel is full and creamy with a roasty/piney dry finish that lingers to burnt. Drinks mostly like a nice BIPA.
3.7 Bottle, february 16th 2013. Dark brown body, almost black in appearance, big tanned head. Aroma is roasty with fruity hops, leather and caramel. Taste is more hopforward with citrus and pine, with a distinct sweet and roasty touch, and a strong alcohol taste. Quite nice body, thick and not too carbonated, with a good stouty roasted finish
3.9 Very smell and very taste of this beer. Interesting taste and very high also. Good and fairly long finish.
3.9 A colabrown beer with a dense, big and beige head. Aroma is succesfully mix of roastiness and aromatic hops, liquirice, chocolate, citrusfruits and hint of lactose. Taste is bitter, liquirice, roasted malts, IPA stays in the background, some citrusfruits. The aftertaste is quite dry and roasted. Medium bodied, quite smooth carbonation, nice to drink. Quite nice, roasted beer and IPA gives a refreshning touch.
4.2 Svært som natten. Lite skum. Masse smak av b.l.a. sjokolade. Litt brent og søt. En litt spesiell IPA.
4.3 Et imponerende øl for en som vanligvis ikke er så glad i IPA. God frisk lukt, dyp nesten svart på farge. Rik på smak og fylde. En gledelig opplevelse.
3.7 Bomber from Fischmans shared with ck1, thanks beermenus! Pours a very dark brown with a brownish head. Some lacing. Aroma has chocolate, roast and some slight citrus. Taste is of chocolate with licorice and some fruit. More chocolate fudge at the end. ck1 a 14 as well. Hard to tell the age - the hops may have gone - or BORIS may just have been too overwhelming (as it is) given aging time.
3.5 Bottle. Pours an extremely dark brown with a very small head. Nose is rather hoppy with the large IPA base. Taste is just a tad sweet and also a little bitter. A little roasting in there, too.
3.9 Poured from a bomber. Pours a darker brown with a thin khaki colored head of foam. Aroma is fairly hop forward with fruity notes dominating a smooth malty oaty backbone. Taste is a lot like a black IPA in bitterness and roasty notes, but also like a nice cup of coffee on the verge of smoky fruity notes. Very nice.
3.8 Botella. Color negro con espuma beige duradera y persistente. Aroma cafe, pan y roasted. En boca es mas stout que ipa, con un agradable final lupulado. Buen equilibrio entre ipa y stout
3.9 Pours a very dark brown color with a small brown head that lingers a long time. Nice aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, molasses, and coffee with hints of citrus, grapefruit, cherries, and spiciness. Taste is slightly sweet, a little roasted coffee and chocolate. Hops hit softly late with some citrus and spiciness. Long, moderately bitter finish. Leaves spice and chocolate on the tongue. Thin mouthfeel and pretty smooth. Would like a little more body to it but it has a really good flavor. An interesting beer for sure that I will go back to sometime. I hope more breweries try these kinds of mixes in the future.
3.4 Bottle from Bier Koning, Amsterdam. Pours a dark mahogany with a thin tan head. The aroma is malty and warm. The flavour is smooth and bitter with some liqourice bitterness on the palate. A very drinkable ale.
3.4 Bottle shared. Pours dark brown to black with a tan head. Aroma of fresh hops, roasted malt, some chocolate and coffee. Flavour is moderate sweet and bitter. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.
3.7 66cl bottle shared courtesy of JMGreenUK, thanks! Thick creamy tan head. Clear black pour. Lovely hoppy aftertaste. A lovely beer!
4.3 Olmost black with a light brown head - good malt aroma with some notes of roasted malt, there is olso a nice hop aroma - good malt body with some sweetness, with caramel and some coffee, and oslo some hop bitterness - Lingering malt with caramel and cofee along with some roasted malt notes with a good hop bitterness in the back - this was very good and a nice surprice
4.3 Bottle @ Melkebaren, Sandnes. Pours black with a smal tan head. It’s not difficult to detect that this is a Hoppin Frog ale. All though it consists of 66% IPA and 33% stout, the stout really dominates the aroma and flavors. The IPA backs it all up with a nice bitterness, and some freshness to the whole picture. Strong aromas of leather, licorice, dark chocolate. Similar to BORIS in fact. A really great ale! But one glass is more than enough and last a while.
3.6 Black color. Light brown head. Hop aroma towards dried citrus and pine. Taste is much of the same, combined with some vinous notes as well. Getting a hint of licorice towards the end. Quite enjoyable.
4.0 Bottle from Burg Bieren. black colour, tan head. Nose is roasted malts, chocolate, hoppy, bit of pine. Flavour is roasted malts, coffee, hops, bit of pine. Dry finish. Very pleasant!
3.6 Pours dar black with a light colored brown head that fades somewhat fast, leaves some ok lacing.aroma is leather, raisins, tobacco, some citrus hints from the hops, but the hops seem pretty muted. Taste is about identical, but the hops shine even less in the taste, from the leathery sort of vinous tste I’m getting from this, and also from how little hop presence there seems to be, id say this bottle sat on the shelf for awhile. This is still a really good beer, but id like to get a more fresh sample so I can get the full effect from the hops.
