3.6 Bottle 1 pint. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, cocoa, caramel, some black fruits, plums. Not so intensive. Very smooth taste. Slimy, fat. Chocolate, coffee, cocoa. Roast. Dry. Low bitterness, low carbonation. Medium-low body. Expected more.
3.8 Bottle bought at Las Buenas Pulgas, served at home in a snifter glass. Black colour, small brown head with no retention nor lacing. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, varnished and dried fruits. Medium body, viscous texture, no carbonation.Sweet finish. Taste of chocolate, coffee, dried and red fruits, . Pretty good, more in the nose than in the tongue.
4.0 2020/05/15 - Pours nearly black dark brown with a tan head that quickly dissipates and leaves no lacing. Aroma is cocoa, char, roasted grain, toffee, brown sugar, vanilla and light soy sauce. Taste is char, toasted grain, soy sauce, toffees day cocoa. Mouthfeel is medium to full and sticky with smooth carbonations and a long, toasted, warming finish.
4.3 Copenhagen 29/4 2020. 35,5 cl bottle from Beers of Beers web-shop. Happy, hopping' frog sporting a pitcher of beer and a double gold medal from the Great American Beer Festival on the label. Pours opaque deep, dark brown with a small beige head. Settles as tiny patches of foam floating aimlessly around. No lacing. Aroma is intense with an overwhelming combination of chocolate sweetness and an earthy, bitter odor. Brown sugar, toffee, light roast. Leather, wet soil, muskiness. Prominent presence of alcohol. Light carbonation. Thick, viscous, fat, smooth, creamy texture. Flavor is intense with a strong sweetness followed by a medium bitterness. Aftertaste is sweet with a strong bitter undercurrent. Lingering. Finish has a distinct boozy burn. Powerful Imperial Stout. This Frog kicks ass.
3.6 Aroma alcohólico con notas a café y maltas tostadas. En boca cacao, maltas tostadas y regusto a café y licor. Repetiría.
4.0 Botella de @Labirratorium, Madrid (Online) 25/04/2020 Color negro opaco corona de espuma beige, aromas cacao, tostados, café, sabor café, cacao, notas licorosas cuerpo sedoso.
3.6 Bottle. It poured a black color with a tan head. The aroma was of coffee, chocolate and roasted malts. The taste was similar to the aroma with more coffee, chocolate, roasted malts, cocoa, touch of hops with medium carbonation and a nice chewy aftertaste. Nice.
4.0 Imperial clàssica, amb maltes torrefactes. Amb cos, poca escuma i poca carbonatació. Xocolata amb llet, carmel, cafè, licor...
4.1 Ruskeanmusta laissa jättäen ruskean vaahdon lasiin. Tuoksussa on tummaa suklaata, kahvia ja paahtunutta mallasta. Suutuntuma on intensiivinen, eikä päästä helpolla. Mausta löytyy espressoa, tiettyä hedelmäisyyttä, suklaata ja mallasta. Loppumaku jää kuivaksi.
4.4 16oz bottle share at We Brought Beer, Balham. Black with a thin tan head. Aroma of big cocoa, coffee, roast malt and molasses. Very thick and perfectly balanced.
4.0 650 ml bottle at home. Pours a very dark chestnut brown with a tan colored head. Aroma of roasted malt, charred wood, burnt nuts, oats, dark coffee, dark chocolate, hints of dark fruits and faint herbal notes. Medium-full body with a light to medium sweetness and a light to medium roasty bitterness. The flavor is similar to the smell with more dark chocolate, some burnt notes, burnt wood, tobacco, some dark fruits. Becomes more roasted towards the finish - burnt wood, ash - and a notable earthy herbal hop presence. Finishes with a light roasty bitterness and light burnt notes. Classic roast forward RIS. Good. Corpo enorme, vellutato, morbido, carbonazione bassa. Gran bevuta davvero.
4.0 Bottle shared at Vál during the hop harvest. I only took numerical notes while having this one.
4.2 Bottle at Barr restaurant in copenhagen. Pour pitch dark, with little to no head. Color is deep black. On the nose is coco, coffee, coconut and vanilla. The barrel adds funky sour notes to the beer. Palate is more of the deep rich coco and coffee. With nice velvety and creamy sweet texture all that coats the mouth. Excellent beer
3.6 Bomber bottle that was several years old. Poured opaque black with a 1-finger dark tan head. Mild bubbling along the glass. Mild aroma of chocolate mixed with a note of grain. Full body, lightly oily. Finish was smooth, but with a mild astringency. Chocolate flavor with some caramel sweetness underneath. A bit of grain at the back, and maybe a touch of banana underneath.
4.1 Pours dark, dark brown with a bit of fizz but no real head until poured a bit warmer, which leaves a foamy darkish tan head. Aroma is sweet chocolate malt, molasses, cinnamon, oatmeal. Taste follows with more roastiness, dark chocolate and a touch of coffee. Not boozy. Semi-thick mouthfeel and slightly dry. Closes with ash and roast with lingering sweetness. I enjoyed this one more soon after a pour - so I doled it out a few times. A pretty damn fine RIS.
3.7 Sort uklar Bær Choklade kaffe tømmer havre Bitter modrate sød Oile blød @døe
4.2 On tap at Brewski for Brewsvegas. Pours jet black w/dense tan head that showed some lacing. Aroma of choc malt, licorice, coffee, initially sweet that blends into bitterness, cherry notes.
3.8 Sort, tyk, lille skum brunlig, som svinder. Aroma er mørk ristet malt. Smagen er fyldig, mørk ristet malt, rund, noget sødligt rosin/cognac, et streg chokolade og lidt tør humle i eftersmagen, ganske lækker.
4.0 Fat på taphouse. Doft av choklad o portvin. Krämigt god i munnen sedan portvin o lite rökighet.
3.6 Toń czarna, wpada do głęboki brąz. Piana średnio obfita, szybko opada do kożuszka. Obkleja podniebienie i usta. Mocno, przyjemnie rozgrzewa przełyk. Smak jest odzwierciedleniem zapachu, pominąwszy alkohol, dodawszy nieco kakaowej goryczki. Bardzo przyjemne, ładnie ułożone, zbalansowane piwo. Odbiór zdecydowanie psuje zbyt wyraźny, niefajny alkohol w nosie.
4.2 2015 Taster showing pitch black with a finger of latte colored foam. The nose shows medium intense notes of licorice, dark coffee, and light chocolate. Roasted malt note appears on warming up0 The palate is full bodied and slick with mild carbonation. As expected, very smooth oatmeal mouthfeel. A lot of dark coffee and dark chocolate with a mild espresso like bitterness on the finish with a bit of adzuki sweetness on the mid-palate that follows through to the end to tie it off.
3.8 Toranomon Hills tasting, about 5 years old bottle, thanks Jon! Dark brown pour, just some brown bubbles, almost no foam. Toasted nose, toffee and light molasses. Tiny bit of roast, some sweetness. Tastes bitter and some smoky base underneath that grainy roast character. Quite well integrated together, some roasty bitterness there, lingering chocolate cocoa roast in the finish.
4.1 Taster at Craft Room, Opatovina, Zagreb. Black, small lasting creamy beige head. Dark caramel, nutty, dark fruits, jam, molasses, coffee and roasty develops. Very thick and smooth, slightly tart, dried fruit and red sour fruit. Roasty dry finish. Wood or barrel. Alcohol slightly present. Complex, thick, great.
4.1 Rating 2500 ! Sunday, January 6, 2019. Bottle, 1 pint 6 fl.oz. 9.4%. Purchase ("Craft beer shop", Angers (49), FR). @Naintré, shared with my dad. A sparkling black oily beer with a medium beige-brown foamy head ; medium retention ; average lacing. Black chocolate++, rustic cereal (oatmeal), light roast, coffee notes, alcohol notes. Medium round sweet ; medium dry bitter ; light fresh wind ; warming atmopshere. Good voluptuous body, light oily texture, soft gaseous to flat, sweet chocolate strong lasting finish. Overall, very good, great ! Nice chocolate character ; maybe too "fat".
4.1 Oatmeal stout at 'imperial' strength, one of the modern Hoppin' Frog classics I had in several 'derivative' versions but apparently never the regular. Bomber from Etre Gourmet, shared with my girlfriend Goedele. Thick and densely creamy, very deep mocha brown, regular head slowly thinning and eventually dissolving completely; ink black robe, nowhere translucent - now this is what an American style imperial should look like... Intense nose of roasted walnuts, black coffee, bitter black chocolate galore, whisky, hard caramel, bayleaf, charcoal, pipe tobacco, paint thinner, Cuban cigars, fried black olives. Subdued but effective basic sweetness in the mouth, old raisins, very nutty from the start with a light black olive-like umami accent, sourish roasted grains stretching underneath a massive, viscous body of deeply toasted walnut-, black chocolate- and eventually very roasty-bitter coffee-like malts, the latter accentuated by rooty and peppery hop bitterness; mouthfeel retains that typical oatmeal velvetiness, but the alcohol glow in the end becomes quite 'hot' and even a bit astringent in the end, with a very whisky-like character. Ends rooty, ashy, roasted and a bit solventy - just a tad too crude and boozy for a beer below 10% ABV, but the overall flavour is intense and delicious enough. Standard American 'impy' I'd say, enjoyed it even in spite of overt solventy and alcoholic features.
3.8 Tap at Craft Room. Pitch black, creamy brown head, okay retention. Creamy chocolate aroma, quite lovely, caramelly too, dried figs as well. Remarkably drinkable, lean for the ABV, chocolatey with dark chocolate notes building up, creamy, dried figs again. Some bitterish touches in the finish. Hm, very good, just not as great as I hoped.
