Hoppin' Frog / Fanø Natasha Røcks America Chocolate Rye Imperial Stout

Hoppin' Frog / Fanø Natasha Røcks America Chocolate Rye Imperial Stout

In a collaboration with Fanø Brewery on Fano Island in Denmark, we created an Imperial Stout recipe to satisfy our own deepest desires. Brewing it on this picturesque summertime vacation island is how Natasha started, and of course we couldn’t wait to brew it at Hoppin’ Frog! The result is Natasha Rocks America - a rich, hoppy Imperial Stout with the deep-roasted, smooth flavor of Chocolate Rye malt. And, Natasha is generously dry-hopped with the perfect mix of select American hops, adding a great hop character to this super-tasty Imperial Stout collaboration brew.

3.6 Jet black color. Nose of chocolate and licorice. Taste follows nose with a hint of the rye spiciness. Mild carbonation with less than advertised hop bite.

3.5 Flaska på provningen USA comes to Göteborg 2014. Luktar Choklad, frukt, salt, surt. Svart. Smakar trä, choklad, frukt, surt, sött, salt, bröd. Lite tunn.
3.6 Bottle courtesy of rlgk. Pours deep brownish black with a frothy and creamy mocha head that leaves some thick lacing on the glass while dissiapting. Smell is malty with rye bread, caramel, black pepper corns, hay, soil, alcohol, chocolate and coffee. Taste is bitter and malty with rye bread, rye flour, chocolate, coffee, toasted cereal and orange zest. Mouthfeel is soft, tiny tart and medium to full bodied. Finish is malty with rye bread, caramel, hay, soil, pepper corns and lemon zest. Solid beer but rather meh from this brewery. Something with the malt bill doesn’t quite work for me…
3.8 Black as the deepest dungeon. Frothy tan head that last. Good lacing. Coffee, roasted and chocolate flavor. Full body. Balanced beer. Lovely smooth mellow flavor. Coffee, roasted and chocolate. Nice easy drinkable impy. [Bottle at rlgk plaza]

3.8 [5686-20130817] Bottle. Roasted sweet barbecued meat aroma. Black brown body with a quick foamy tan head. Roasty light coffee flavour. Full body. Delicious. (7/3/8/4/16) 3.8 (@ Campground Brewdown 2013, Millmont, PA) Overheard: "That looks like a good piece..." -- chicken selection process song
4.3 "maybe some time has domne this well. I went into this timidly, as 7.5% is on the low end for an "imperial" stout, and the reviews have been good but not great. Upon cracking the bottle, though, this was an eye opener. Wonderful full aroma of rye and chocolate, light licorice and roasted coffee. Surprisingly black. Body isn’t as light as expected, though it has ample carbonation it’s very smooth. Flavor is a wonderful balance of hoppy and roasted stout, with the rye (I admit, i have a soft spot) done to near perfection. FAR surpassed expectations."
3.9 Bottle shared by Marcus. Pours black with some off white head. Taste is coffee, roasted malts, rye and chocolate
3.9 22oz bottle. Poured a black color with a small sized off white head. Oily body. chocolate, roast, licorice, and some coffee. Bready as well.
3.9 Bottle shared by Marcus. Pours dark brown with a tan head. Strong rye spice aroma with some chocolate. Med body. Flavor is very rye, and chocolate and dark malt. Seems to have some op. Lots of flavor. Good IS.
4.0 Bottle from Supermarket Liquors, Fort Collins. Pours near black with a massive tan head and a chocolate and rye aroma. There is a hearty chocolate malt flavor with a dry bitter finish. A very nice stout with a hoppy element.
3.4 @basunen: ganska lek och mjölkig sig med tydlig choklad och lite rom. God men inte spektaklet
3.7 (22oz bottle, 2 of 3) Pours an opaque black body with a small tan head. Aroma of chocolate, vinous, grass, and roasted malt. Flavor of chocolate, vinous, citrus, and grass with a bitter finish.
3.2 Bottle @ Chmielarnia, Warsaw. Pours with medium high beige head, it’s rather dark brown than black. In arome there is some coffee, little bit of hops (pine and herbs notes) but there isn’t a lot of chocolate, and I was really expecting that. In taste it’s rather sweet, but aftertaste is dominated by ashy and earthy notes. What is more, for me this got too light body as for imperial stout. Not bad, but nothing special.
4.0 Bomber from brewpub. Pours black with thin mocha head. Aroma of chocolate, pine, rye, roast. Fairly creamy, strong hop bitterness and flavor. Bitter chocolate, caramel, roast. Pretty tasty, bordering on American stout
4.3 Bomber from the brewery via PUB’R. Hazy, thick dark brown pour with minimal tan head. Nose was dark and rye malt, cacao, molasses, hops. Tasted thick and rich, with huge rye malt flavors, big hops, cacao, and a complex finish. This one was excellent, and a once in a lifetime experience for the Good Doctor.
4.2 Pours a deep dark black pour with a magnificent java coffee colored head. Nose is mocha , sweet chocolate and rye with a hint of alcohol. Taste is bittersweet chocolate, mocha and deep malt. Finishes on the sweet malty flavored notes with a moderately long ending. Well Done ! Quaff Score 8 / 10
4.0 Bomber. Pours black with a brown head and nice aroma of sweet chocolate, rye, and coffee. Taste is sweet as well, tons of chocolate and rye with coffee and vanilla notes leading to a sweet, roasty finish. Delicious brew
4.4 Bottle. Black colour with a tan head. Aroma is hop, pine, coffee, roasted malt. Flavour is hop, pine, coffee, roasted malt, chocolate, alcohol. Full body. Very nice and pleasent beer.
4.3 Bottle. Wow, I should have bought more of this. It is fantastic. Chocolate and brownies with a nice deep maltiness. Some nice hopping to balance. Pitch black pour with a deep brown head that fully coats. Creamy and full bodied, but clean. A black patent char on the finish.
4.1 Bottle from backlog. Black with a brown head. Aroma: licorice, peach, lemon, roasted and creamy. Taste: salmiak, hoppy with peach and lemon + hard lemon candies, milk chocolate, coffee, roasted. Very tasty.
3.0 Bomber. Roasted malt/coffee aroma with hints of earthy rye and chocolate. Pours deep, black with a thin, light brown head and very little lacing. Strong roasted malt and coffee flavors to start. Finishes very dry with some some earthiness from the rye, but mostly more roastiness. Good in some respects but the other flavors overpower what chocolate might be there.
4.1 Bottle shared with and courtesy of wyzzywyz22. Cheers mate. I don’t come across Hoppin’ Frog beers much but I love them when I do. Poured black with a nice darkish tan head. Roasted coffee, chocolate, big aroma, cocoa powder, nice hops, chocolate in the flavour was great. Really liked this one.
3.0 Rated from notes taken on 9 Mar 2014 -- Poured from the bomber. An oil slick into my glass. Jet black with a little brown head. Smell is dark and dank. This beer would probably have been more enjoyable if I had drank it earlier in the night. Overall enjoyable, but I would like to give it another shot to truly appreciate it.
3.9 Another late night share by RussianDragon. Thanks Dave! The beer is near black with a small beige collar. Sparse lacing. The aroma brings baker’s chocolate, roast, ripe dark fruits, bread. The rye character is subtle, but does add a nice touch. Cocoa and dark roast. Big time Danish influence in this stout. Medium to full bodied with moderately low carbonation. A touch of bitterness and dry cocoa powder in the finish. A solid beer. I really enjoyed this.
4.1 0.65l bottle. It looks really good in the glass this one. Totally black when it has settled and it has this really milkshake dark creamy dense super lacing head that just screams DRINK ME! Love the aroma as well. It’s so deep and roasted, but also super sharp-hoppy and almost hedge like in a way. It has chocolate, vanilla, wood and a little bit of something burned. Just lovely. It’s a bit higher on the carbonation than I had imagined and it’s not hard to feel a heavy thickness in the mouth. Tastes beautiful. It’s light - or a bit more than light burned. Lots of lightdrinkable qualities here also - something I actually wasn’t expecting. It’s not to thick or chewy, just filled with lots of flavor. No doubt that it’s heavy roasted this. Almost some hard burned coffee beans with chocolate cake and a kick-you-in-the-teeth-bitterness in the finish and aftertaste. A wonderful delicious beverage. 04.01.2014
