Hoppin' Frog Hop Dam Triple IPA

Hoppin' Frog Hop Dam Triple IPA

Hop Dam has been a long time in the works, and its design required us to build a large stainless steel hop dam for our kettle, just for this beer! It was worth all the effort, because this beer is extremely hoppy and very satisfying, using 50% more hops than our Mean Manalishi Double IPA, which was voted Best Double IPA In The World by the US Beer Tasting Championships. Hop Dam is 10% alcohol by volume, and really hoppy, with a bitterness level that is very high but refined and therefore refreshing – its like kissing a hop!! Along with all the standard hop additions, it is also mash-hopped, first-kettle-hopped, and dry-hopped!!! Hop Dam is a 100% American-style IPA, dominated by the top-rated, assertive and refined Amarillo hops, along with lots of aroma and flavor from Columbus, and Cascade, and the wonderful Summit hops – the very special dwarf hop plant picked by hand, and sought-after for its great flavor and aroma. These hops work great together, and make Hop Dam TRIPLE IPA our new standard for hoppy beers!! It will be available for only a few months, so get Hop Dam while it lasts!

3.2 smells malty and vinegary, dark amber with white lacing, malt start onto a massive hop burst then mildly salty in the finish. ok
3.7 Bottle, 65cl. Murky orange/copper with heavy sediment and a frothy to minimal offwhite head. Floral hop and caramel aromas with hints of sour grapes and resin. Robust bodied with moderate carbonation. Thick and somewhat oily, with a heavy astringency. Heavy malt backbone matches the happiness well but still extremely bitter. No sweetness, with a monstrous bitter and alcohol palate. Soapy and very dry. A beast of an IPA.
3.5 22 oz bottle of the latest batch. Trade from a friend, thanks Daniel! Clear amber/golden copper with tiny bits of sediment floaters, nice two fingers of off-white head. Aromas of biscuit, grapefruit citrus, caramel. Tastes of grapefruit citrus, hop oils, lots of floral notes, some alcohol. Medium body with a dry and warm finish. Feels somewhat unbalanced, a bit too floral/bitter and boozy with not enough citrus for my liking.
A peine fumée.
Nez houblonné à mort, on sent l'alcool. Grosse corpulence. Ca tabasse bien.
3.5 Bottle to glass. Pours a deep golden orange color with an off white head. Hops, hops, and more hops! Decent floral and fruity aroma. Flavor is aggressively bitter. Long lingering into the finish. This beer is way too bitter. Loses quite a bit of the aroma and flavor of the hops.
3.4 Whew - dry and lip-puckering bitter. Very happy, but I feel like the subtle aromas of hoppy beers are lost on this monster. For me, this one falls somewhere in between their IPA and IIPA in terms strictly of my enjoyment.
4.0 Bottle. Hazy darker orange in color with an off-white head. Some citrus, wooden forresty piney notes and sweetish butterscotch in aroma. Feels very fresh and inviting. There’s also some honey kind of sweetness present, but it’s kept in order with that nice, quite aggressive bitter hoppyness. Grassy bitters and oranges mixed with piney notes in taste. Smooth mouthfeel. Later on more tropical fruityness appears together with some nice bitter punch towards the finish. Drinkability is alpha and omega here, good tasting it is.
4.3 Bottle from Cask Pub and Kitchen, Pimlico, London. A hazy orange/amber coloured pour with a medium off white head on top. Hoppy, citrus, pine aroma. Tastes hoppy, malty, citrus, pine, grapefruit, some tropical fruit, sweet/bitter, rich and bloody gorgeous.
4.1 Bottle at home. Bit past it’s best but still delicious, pours golden amber, taste is sweet pine and toffee.
3.9 Aroma of caramel malt, pine resin, fruits, hint of liquorice, grapefruit, lots of hops. Flavour is moderate sweet with a looooong bitter finish. Just a little boozy. Lots of intensity and complexity to this one. Interesting experience drinking this beer.
4.2 Bottle at home. Amber colour, slightly hazy, off-white nicely lacing head. Hop character is big on resinous pine and this beer is quite boozy. Additionally, it has a nicely sweet tropical fruitiness (mango, peach, grapefruit) that matches the creamy malty backbone; it’s a little citrus fruity too. Lingering bitter, resinous, oily finish. Dry too. Oily mouthfeel, big big bodied, medium carbonation. Not your average (imperial) IPA, but too bitter for my taste.
3.4 Bottle @ Three Notch’d Tasting. Amber pour with a small head. The nose is actually pretty medicinal. Herbs and loads of white onion. Caramel and bready. Onion, earthy. Strong bitter finish. Medium body, soft carbonation. Meh.
3.7 2013 bottle. Pours copper with a slightly off-white head. Aroma of pineapple, pine, and lots of hops. Very bitter flavor with some pineapple, caramel, resin, and alcohol. Oily finish.
3.8 Bomber bottle to glass. This is a big beer! Dark amber, cloudy pour and creamy head. Big hops aroma. A big mouth feel and taste. Strong hops, but balanced by sweet and subtle citrus. If I had a complaint (which I don't), Hop Dam is maybe a touch sweet in the finish. The ABV is definitely there, but does not overpower. Mmmm...
3.7 22 oz bottle. Hazy Amber with a decent off-white head. Aroma is of citrus, booze, grass, caramel. Taste is of citrus, caramel, grass, and heavy booze.
3.7 Bottle. The look is copper in color, beige colored head, and ok. The smell is super hoppy, grassy, resin, and super hop notes. The taste is resin, fruit, hops, grassy, alcohol, caramel.
3.7 Pours a clear amber color with a medium sized dense off-white head. Aroma of caramel, fruit, citrus and light toast. Flavor is a lot of pine and citrus hops and light toasted malt. Bitterness sticks around for quite a while.
3.9 Bottle to goblet Caramel, blood orange, orange rind, caramel, resin, and sap. Translucent amber, thin white head. Orange rind, toffee, molasses.
3.6 Amber brown hazy pour. Aroma is thick malty sweetness and syrupy hops. Taste is syrupy hop sweetness, bitter hops that claw at the palate, dry hoppy finish with warmth from the booze.
3.8 A solid dipa. Pours a burnt orange with a lot of sediment. Aromas are tropical fruit, corn syrup, and resin. Flavors are hoppy and sweet. It’s a big beer. Really good.
3.5 Pours red/orange with a big white head. Sweet, caramel, fruity aroma. Flavor is sweet in the begining followed by a strong, very strong and long bitterness with notes of pine hops, alchool, some yeast and a unknown but very familiar flavor which is quite strong.
[APK: 6.63]
4.0 Bottle. Hazy light amber appearance. The aroma has notes of caramel, resin, pine and grapefruit and orange zest. The taste is in initially caramel but then finishes with a huge resiny piny hop hit. I feel like I’m being slapped on the tongue with a pine branch soaked in mango juice. Nice! Leaves a huge lingering bitterness.
4.4 Nice flavor and presentation. Good carbonation and clarity of a bright rusty orange color. Great taste and mouthfeel.
3.8 651 ml. bottle. Pours a medium, well retained, tiny bubbled, ivory head, with extensive lacing, over a clear dark amber (SRM 15) body.....nose is pine, resin, grapefruit peel, light toasted malts with cereal, no esters, balance to the hops....taste is sweet with toffee/caramel notes to start, then pine, resin, lighter citrus, floral notes, then heavy lingering bitter tones, no esters, balance very much to the hops.....mouth feel, heavy of medium body, slightly sticky, alcohol warmth present, moderately astringent, carbonation creates a creamy mouthful. The hops are in ascendancy in this beer, and there is only moderate malts to respond. It is difficult to balance beers such as this because the malts become almost toxically sweet as they are amped up. (Taste Dogfish Head 120 minute.) As it warms the malts arrive somewhat more and create more balance. It will be interesting to see if the Triple IPA becomes a separate style. BJCP 9/3/15/4/7
3.7 Pours hazy amber with a sandy head. The aroma is perfumey pungent and sweet hops. The flavor brings a boatload of hops covering any resemblance of malts at first, then sweet malts and amber, and then huge hop bitterness and sweetness blended at the end.
3.9 Pours cloudy dark orange amber with low off-white head. Aroma of resin, grapefruit, mango, peach, pine cones, light caramel and vanilla, a seriously rich and potent nose! Taste is hop intense bitter, slightly medicinal, with long heavy bitter finish. Light to medium body with soft carbonation. Looks and smells great, taste is actually the weak link with this one.
3.8 Hazy amber/orange color; Medium creamy body; Aroma of caramel malt, toffee, pine hops, & fruit; Flavor of sweet malt, caramel/toffee, pine hops, fruit, and citrus; Finish is fairly bitter; A tad cloying - but definitely worth a try.
