Hoppin' Frog Outta Kilter Wee Heavy Scotch Red Ale

Hoppin' Frog Outta Kilter Wee Heavy Scotch Red Ale

Rich malty flavors of caramelized and toasted grains dominate this robust Scotch ale. A hint of rye adds a crisp, scotch-like, old-world beer character, reminiscent of a simpler life from centuries ago. It’s a wee-bit heavy.

4.0 1pt 6fl oz shared bottle at home from FirmaBier. Nose is dried fruits, dark berries, caramel, plum, light bourbon. Body is dark reddish deep brown. Aroma is dark berries, raisin, caramel, biscuits, milk chocolate, herbs, wet old wood. Medium sweet, light bitter, light fruity sour. Finish is medium lasting roasty fruity medium bittersweet. Full body, oily sticky texture, average carbonation. Easy dessertish beer, strong flavor, bit out of balance but very tasty, great one.
3.2 Small, diminishing beige head, that leaves just a thin cover above the near copper colored liquid, that have just a hint of haze. Sweet aromas, with an earthy, estery backdrop. Has some hints of being a red, but really just seems to be a bit unclean. Thicker, lightly oily feel. Caramel, fruit and alcohol flavors. I think the alcohol dominates the spice that might be found from the rye. A bit too much out of balance for me. 8/10
3.7 Bottle 65cl @ Zombier, Malaga, Spain. A: Ambersih brown. T: Malt, sweet, vanilla, bourbon.
3.8 Appearance: clear, dark orange, amber, tan foam, minimal head, disappears fast. Aroma: honey, alcohol, bread, some toastiness. Taste: medium sweetness, medium bitterness, medium sourness, very nice balance. Palate: medium body, average carbonation, oily feel, astringent, bitter, long finish.
3.2 Pours hazy amber with little head. Very malty with almost no hop presence. I’m not a fan of overly hopped ale but this one needs more...very little character to this.
3.5 Draft 0.15l at The Beer Temple Amsterdam, The Netherlands. 24.05.2016. Taste with Zlotta. Pour it little bit hazy amber color with small white head. Aroma red fruits, sweet bubble gum note. Taste of apples, spices, red fruits, figs, little bit grassy thing. medium body, slick feel, average carbonation. Classic Scotch Ale I think.
3.2 Hazy deep Amber with a thin ivory cap that recedes a little faster than I like, leaving behind a thin ring of foam around the edge of the glass. A little earthy Amber malt and a little peat. Smooth and not at all boozy flavor with some earthy Amber scotch malt, and a mild British bitterness. Smooth and amberish, very balanced and slightly Scottish.
3.3 Keg at CBC CG, London. It pours a clean golden color with a medium off white head. Aroma is sweet and sticky with notes of plums raisins and other dark fruits. Taste is sweet and lightly boozy with more vanilla dark fruits raisins and toffee. Medium bodied with OK carbonation. Overall, quite sweet
3.6 Sampled from tap at ’Beertemple’. Clear, deep red with a frothy, tan head. Sweetish, slightly fruity aroma of caramel, strawberry jam and jelly. Sweetish-malty, slightly fruity taste of caramel, strawberry jam and jelly, followed by a short, slightly bitter, a little spicy finish with notes of juniper. Medium to full body, oily mouthfeel, flat. Nice, but not very deep.

3.8 Flaske. Noe uklar, karamellfarget. Lavt karbonert med skum som forsvinner. Smaker karamell, tørket mørk frukt . Meget god
3.6 Dark amber color with light brown head. Aroma has booze soaked raisins, figs, dates and other dark fruits. Taste is somehow sweet and slightly tart with dried figs and caramel up-front. Body is quite light and effervescent. Really nice dark fruit notes but the alcohol is a bit too present for my taste.
4.0 Bottle. Thanks Matt! Rich fully malty beer. Rather sweet but not unbalanced. Caramel, burnt sugar, toasted. Moreish. Burnt sugar but dry in the finish.
3.8 Tap @ Bishops Arms Hornsgatan. Almost clear amber with a medium size lacing head. Sweet caramel and pine aroma. Mild carbonated and a smooth creamy mouthfeel. Great dark sugar and caramel, with pine and oak taste in good balance. Woody smooth finish.
2.8 Bottle from Delirium Hoppy Loft. Loose, irregular, pale greyish white head stabilizing on the edges, colour is a warm orangey ’rust-brown’ with lively sparkling, hazy, with small flakes of protein everywhere. Weird aroma of ketjap, fresh ginger, strong and even somewhat ’ironish’ rosehip tea, caramel, overripe grapefruit, whisky, milk chocolate, more subtle hints of balsamic vinegar, peanuts, salted tomato, old-fashioned brown cough syrup with a lot of sugar, sourish-spicy wet rye bread, parquet varnish- or even nail polish-like phenols, marmelade, strawberry, cloves. Sweet onset, restrained fruitiness of strawberry, orange and overripe pear with candi sugar, surrounded by a persisting but subtle sourish edge, medium carbo, drying a bit on the tongue but becoming a lot softer and even almost flat in the end, supple but rather thin mouthfeel (probably already thinned by age), very caramelly and a bit nutty with a toasted edge in the end, as expected from a wee heavy. Finishes malty, sweet and still candyish, cloying a little bit, with herbal, tea- and leaf-like hops residing in the background but providing basic structure, as well as quite a big dosis of retronasal phenols (and lightly spicy, rosehip like aromas) and warming, even very slightly burning alcohol. This was probably a good beer when young, but surely this bottle hasn’t been kept in the best of circumstances and is too old now to properly present itself. I expected a lot more from this, seen my previous positive experiences with this brewery, in particular the barrel aged version of the very same beer. Bit of a downer, actually, but I have no other choice at the moment than to rate it the way I receive it, which is too old, too thin as a result (especially for this particular style) and too phenolic.
3.9 A really beautiful close to red color in my cup. Caramel, cereal, innapreciate nearly 30 IBUS, fuuuuull body with soft carbonation and a long finish.
3.8 Bomber. Rich caramel malt aroma with toasted grains and a bit of smoke. Pours caramel colored with a thin tan head with poor retention and good lacing. Starts with rich caramel sweetness with some toasted malt. Finishes smooth with the caramel sweetness as well as some toffee with a bit of smoke. Nice scotch ale.
3.7 Pours a really dark red with a big scotchy nose. Really smooth and super easy to drink.
3.6 Caramel bruinig bier met een goede getinte schuim kraag. Ruikt zoet, caramel, rogge. Smaakt caramel, koffie bitter, zuurtje.
3.6 Mooie caramelkkeur met een kleine kraag. Ruikt zoetig, honing, caramel. Smaakt zoetig, honing, mout.
3.3 From old notes. From tap at Copenhagen Beer Celebration 2012.Hazy amber reddish color with off white head. Malty caramel aroma, light fruity. Sweet and light bitter taste. Medium oily body with soft carbonation
