Hornbeer Viking Chili Stout (Megagrisk)

Hornbeer Viking Chili Stout (Megagrisk)

This is a stout brewed with chocolate, coffee, licorice, vanilla and chili. Our intension has been to brew a complex beer – not really extreme, but still with character. The chili is a kind of “afterburner” – it tickles the tongue, without being aggressive. The Viking Chili Stout was brewed first time to the “Frederikssund Beertasting 2013 in Valhal. The Viking Chili Stout was elected as best beer.

3.8 Aavistuksen olisi maustetta toivonut lisää. Maku oikein hyvä. Ja suutuntuma mukavan poltteleva. Ei liian. Karvapeten joululahja.
1.5 500ml bottle from the High Point. BB 2026-05-02. Pours a very dark brown with a beige head. Aroma is very strange with dry fruits, smoky, a root of licorice, iodine, bandage, some medication. What the heck? Am I at pharmacy? Taste? F****ng the same! One of the worst beers ever. Damn.
4.1 KØLF 020617. Black color with a tan head, Aroma is chili, roasted malt, licorice. Flavor is chili, roasted malt, licorice, alcohol, caramel, spices. . Powerful balanced very nice beer.
3.8 This is Vandertuntingly smoky; just like a liquid campfire. As that’s the case, I get some wood aromas along with chipotle, mushroom, molasses, and booze. It tastes like ashes. You know, the charcoal like taste of a burnt marshmallow. It ends with chipotle and poblano and the booze rides the whole wave from beginning to end. Interesting for sure, but I’m sipping away, trying to decide if I actually like this. Would I drink another bottle? Hmmm, probably not. Too much weirdness going on here.
3.4 On tap. Old note. The aroma has roast, chocolate, pepper. Black coloured beer with a beige head. The taste is ligh-moderate bitter, has chocolate, roast, some booze and the chili’s building up in strength. Not really my thing.
4.3 Black color with dark brown head. Aroma of chocolate, licorice, black pepper and chili. Taste is medium sweet with notes of licorice, caramel, black pepper and long chili finish. The chili isn’t too dominating. Very nice and well balanced imperial stout. Just my style! Goooood!!
3.4 Piana obfita drobna, opadając zdobi szkło. Kolor czarny.
3.2 15cl from bottle at BFGM17. Appearance: murky dark brown with just a thin rim of creamy white foam on the edge of the glass. Aroma: chili peppers, smoke, bbq sauce, coffee. Taste: medium sweetness, high bitterness and gentle spiciness. Notes of bbq sauce, smoked chili peppers and coffee grounds. Palate: medium bodied, watery texture and soft carbonation.
4.3 500ml bottle. Every Scandinavian stout I sample seems custom built for my tastes, and this is no different. Before I say anything else, I will say, I love it. Pours black. Just full on black with a dark, dark brown head, perhaps the darkest I’ve ever seen? LOTS of molasses on the nose, with chocolate below that, Tootsie Roll, dried fruits, and that feeling you get in your nose when you’re cooking with hot peppers. Taste wise, full bodied and sweet, with chocolate candy-like notes, molasses, an almost praline-like note, heat on the tongue from the chili, and a very light note of caramel corn that heads into molasses, nutty notes, espresso, and more heat with a light vegetal note in the finish. This is a beauty. I love it.
3.7 From the tap at FOB, Rimini, Italy. Pours black with limited brownish foam. Aroma is a fresh combination of spiced and roasted malt. Body is medium with quote some chilly feeling leading almost to astringency. Some stickiness. Taste has limited sweetness which is however dominated by the chili feeling. Finish is very long and persistent.
3.3 Bottle 0,5. Pours black with large foamy brown head. Aroma of coffee, roasted malts, chili. Taste is coffee, chocolate and chilli, the chili burn rises in the aftertaste. Quite nice company to the chorizo. Full body, oily texture, soft carbonation.
Miam j’adore!
3.7 Bottle @ home, cellared three years. Pitch black liquid with a medium beige head. Aroma of licorice, cocoa, green chilli, green leaves, some vinous fruits, red fruits and dark fruits.Body is medium to big. Taste is roasted, subtle and pleasantly vinous in combination with chili, licorice, some soy sauce, chocolate. some disturbing metal notes. Finish is roasted and quite dry with balanced bitterness. Lingering moderate chilli heat, licorice and fruits.
3.6 500ml brown bottle. Black with a modest brown head. Nose has cocoa, chocolate, smoke and spice. Taste has smoke, chocolate malt. Late heat. Roasty and bitter with a nice mouthfeel.
3.8 Bottle, shared at Superbowl Party. Near black with a dense brown head. Sweet and roasty, molasses, licorice, coffee, with vegetal notes and a modest chilli heat in the finish. A touch sweet for my preference, but I enjoyed the chillis.
4.0 Colour: black Foam: frothy w/ brownish head Smell: Roasted and sweet malts, chili, earthy notes, peat, abundantly of liquorice, greens, leather, dark/rye bread, dark chocolate and coffee. Taste: not that much chili in the taste, rye bread, dark roasted malts, chocolate, sweet malts bitter hops, wood and liquorice. Soft carbonation. Alcohol is not noticeable, balanced beer, bitterness and mild burn from chili in the end. Quality brew.
2.2 Backlog, ocena przepisana z untappd, w ramach uzupełniania profilu na ratebeer. Pachnie jak waniliowy olejek do ciasta. Mega przesadzona i sztuczna wanilia.
J’aime.
3.8 Keg Third of a Pint at Craft Beer Co, Clapham, London in Dec 2015 - Black in colour. Good beige head. Very Malty; roasty malts, dark chocolate, lots of vanilla, coffee, liquorice notes. Spicy; chilli. Chilli is warming but not too OTT. Very Sweet spicy chilli and roast malty throughout. Nicely done. Enjoyed this. Nice spicy chilli Impy Stout! (2015-12-19)
3.7 500ml bottle pours a deep black color with a finger and a half of light brown head that leaves no lacing behind. Aroma is chocolate with some roasted grains, licorice and hints of chili. Taste is a chocolate malty sweetness with hints of licorice and a roasted grain bitterness with a bit of chili burn in the finish. Medium to full bodied with moderate carbonation. Overall, a very enjoyable Imperial stout, balanced and tasty. Recommended.
Wysycenie: Niskie. Podsumowanie: Nie moja bajka. Za dużo lukrecji, zbyt mocna nuta papryczek chili. Brakuje harmonii i głębi smaku. Po kliku łykach piwo staje się męczące. Dodatkowo tekstura daje wiele do myślenia.
4.2 Piana brazowa szybko opadajaca, nasycenie srednio-niskie,kolor czarny z przebłyskami. Ciekawy warty sprobowania.
3.5 Bottle from High Point, Vancouver, bb 02.05.2026 Black color, the head disappears quickly. Mild aroma of roasted malts, light tar, cardboard and booze. Lean mouthfeel, almost no residual sweetness; roasted malt flavor, strong chili flavor, quite strong incense as well. A lot of booze. I really need more sugars. Good beer, but chaotic, not exceptional, and not worth the very high price tag (13$).
3.7 Bottle - Dark sweet roast and chocolate. Deep jet brown with a small light brown head. Dark chocolate, spicy notes and a nice balance molasses sweetness. Touch of smoke and woody notes.
3.8 Mooie zwarte kleur met een goede kraag. Ruikt zoetig kruiden, mout, koffie. Smaakt koffie, mout, beetje Chili.
3.8 Ruikt vooral chocola.
3.9 .5l bottle from Copenhagen. Rated at Hanniku’s cave 2.0. (2 year old) Pours black with nice brown head. Medium high. Aroma is chocolate, roasted malts, dark fruits, alcohol, chili notes, coffee, burned notes. Flavor is mostly same with liquorice. Great!
