Midnight Ryder – a hat tip to Bischoff’s son, Elliott Ryder – is cloaked in mystery and full of surprises. A style of disputed origins and merit, American Black Ale puts a distinctly American twist on the India Pale Ale with five varieties of malt that give this dark beer a medium body and a complex array of flavors including caramel, chocolate and a smidgen of roast. Sealing the deal are six varieties of American-grown hops added throughout the 90-minute boil. This beer offers a resinous and piney character with just enough citrus to bring balance at the finish line.

4.0Draft at GTMW. Thank you Louis for the recommendation! Pretty much black, brown head. Aroma of floral chocolate with light pine. Taste is bitter chocolate, burnt espresso. Very tasty.
4.3Had a can from a 6-pack poured in to a pint glass in Mankato, MN. Very good well rounded black IPA.
3.612 ounce can courtesy of TheHOFF43. Thanks! Dark brown, large foamy tan head, good retention. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, mild floral hops. The taste is roasted malts, nuts, dark chocolate, herbal almost piney hops. Medium bodied.
4.0Tap at the brewery. Pint glass. Black with tan head that sticks around for drinking enjoyment. Roasted malt and some citrus hops on the nose. Some smoke. Taste is pretty standard black IPA but it’s above average. Lots of hop with a roasted malt backbone. Little chocolate and coffee. Really enjoyable hop-centric effort that is a good flagship for the brewery. I’d purchase with my one last silver dollar.
4.0Canned sample from Whole Foods in Minneapolis. Pours very dark with minimal head. Absolutely delicious blend of malt and hops. Cant wait to have this one again.
4.6Robust, rich, and hoppy taste with a nice crispness to it. Over all, very good.
3.912 oz can pours black with a tan head. Aroma of caramel, citrus and pine. Taste is resin, citrus, malts and some chocolate.
4.2Pours dark black with a beige head. Smells of hops, chocolate and roasted malts. Tastes the same. Very good balance and easy to drink. A great example of the style.
3.812pz Can to glass pour at home, compliments of chad. Black with off white head. Cocoa and biscuit aroma. Chalky milky and bitter chocolate taste. Full flavor in this sucker. Delicious.
3.9Keg @ Indeed. Deep brown. Pine cone and cocoa. Some cream. Lovely aggressive PNW hoppiness. Rich ash and dark chocolate. Pillowy and full. Slightly dry on the finish. Medium body, soft carb. Great.
4.0On tap at Crooked Pint. Deep mahogany with a light brown foam. Nice citrus hop aroma. Medium body. Nice mix of pine hop bitterness and chocolate. Well balanced and very enjoyable.
3.12014 bottle. Jet black with virtually no head. Aroma is dark malt and grass and a hint of sourness. Taste is dark burnt malt with a grassy bitterness. Thin mouthfeel.
3.5Pours a dark brown with a big dark tan head that lasts forever and leaves good lacing. Aroma of pine, citrus and some chocolate. Taste has bittersweet chocolate, some roastiness, citrus and a combination of bright roasty and piney bitterness. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Smooth drinking and a good blend of flavors. Not very complex but very enjoyable.
3.5A black beer with a tan head. The aroma and flavor are roasted, smoky malt and fruity hops.
3.7On tap at the brewery. Pours black with a thick light tan head. Aroma of dark chocolate, sweet roasted malt, hop oils. Flavor of roasted malt, smooth chocolate, charred malt with grassy hops and hop oils in the finish. Very robust, tastes like a roasty brown IPA.
7/4/8/4/14. (3.7/5)
3.2Draft at the brewery. Don’t get me started on my rant about "black IPAs" again ... this is a good coffee-based base, a bit chalky, with a big hoppy flourish. It’s good, but I still don’t care for the combination. (#5667, 8/28/2014)
3.8Pours black with a medium tan head. Aroma is chocolate and malt with piney hops. Flavor is overtly chocolate and light roasty malt with caramel, vanilla, and nutty notes with some distinct citrus and piney hop bitterness present particularly on the finish. Medium body with medium carbonation. Great effort.
3.6From Eden Prairie Liquor. Pours darker than cola colored with a foamy tan head. Aroma has dark patent malts, light citrus and pine with caramel. Later down on the glass, some nuttiness. Taste is of sweet caramel, bitter nuts, some espresso, light grapefruit with black malts. Medium bodied with a touch of alcohol. Finishes more bitter nutty/malty than sweet on the bitter-sweet scale,. Solid offering. 13.8
4.2Poured from a can dated 5/27/2014
Aroma - Dark chocolate, cherry, very good.
Appearance - Nice think creamy head. Pitch black.
Taste - Wow...very good. Great tasting Black IPA. Great lingering taste.
Palate - thick texture, but not overwhelming. Great beer.
Overall - Another solid beer by Indeed. They are a top-notch brewery in MInneapolis.
3.3Draft. Black pour. PRetty heavy on the roast, hops are there, a bit piny, decent.
3.2Can:   Very much like a Black Ale, albeit with a little more hop bounce (but not too much), lots of dry chalky bakers chocolate, and a touch of pasture.   Moderate body and mouthfeel.   Seems a bit dry as well.   Moderate body and mouthfeel, albeit nearing the thing side.   Comes across as not very adventurous, a bit of a mediocre example.   Nothing off, but nothing outstanding either.
3.6Very good black ale. Tan foam head and black body. Scent is faint roast and cocoa. Overall a very good black ale.
3.9Houblons verts enrobés de mélasse, caramel et céréales aggressivement rôties. Simple, juste assez sucré, finale sèche, buvabilité honnête.
4.0Tap/can. (From notes) Pours a deep brown to black. Aroma is roasted coffee/chocolate and a thick dankish hop. Taste is the best Black IPA i’ve pretty much ever had. Hoppy, bitter, dry, chocolate, light roast coffee.
3.8Pours an opaque chocolate brown with thick frothy tan tinged. Aroma is sprucey with white grapefruit. Flavor is almond, spruce and vanilla. Body is light and cleansing. Scrubs the mouth. Carbonation is average.
3.5Pretty tasty black ipa...reminds me alot of sierra nevada black ipa...a decent black but a few better out there.
4.3A very tasty American Black Ale. Plenty of hops with lots of depth and character. The caramel, chocolate and roasted flavors come through nicely.
3.9Poured from can into a tulip glass. Light black color with off white head. Deep resins and pine from the hops. Chocolate and caramel from the malt. Nicely balanced black ipa.
3.7Tap at Ward 6. Reddish black with a tan head and heavy lacing. Piney and lemon hops, burnt sugar and tea. Taste is sweet with a piney bitterness. Medium body with a foamy feel.
3.712 ounce can. Pours a dark brown color with a medium white head. A sweet chocolate nose with some smoke. Bitter rye, oranges, chocolate, dark malts, lingering rye bread. Pretty mellow.
