3.3 Tap at The Brass Tap, Austin. Dark brown color, not much head. Rye bready, toasted aroma. Medium-bodied. Burned malty, a bit boozy, bready flavor. Oat makes this smooth. Not so balanced for my liking but ok.
4.0 caramel, bread, chocolate, roasty, resin, earthy, licorice, black, clear, rocky head, brown foam, lightly bitter, medium body, creamy, average carbonation, long finish, GREAT BEER,,
3.7 Bottle: Pours black with a thin tan head. Aroma is chocolate, mild licorice, oats. Taste is roasty bitter dark chocolate malt, oatmeal coffee grounds and licorice. Pretty easy drinking. Very nice.
4.1 12 oz bottle. (Fiesta) Austin, TX. The bottle only says Convict Hill Oatmeal Stout. It doesn’t say Imperial or the abv. I guess this is this. Black color with a small tan head. Dry roasted malt, licorice, some cough drops and some medicine notes in the aroma. Super balanced flavor of dry roasted malt, licorice, cough drops, salt, dryness and some medicine notes. Really tasty. Amazingly smooth and balanced. This came totally out of the blue. I thought I bought a mild oatmeal stout... Wow! Nice!
3.7 Bottle. Chocolate oatmeal malt and dry grass aroma. Black with small tan head. Moderately sweet chocolate oat malt and mildly bitter dry grass/hay flavor. Body on the light side. Pretty good.
3.4 On tap, tulip glass. Aroma of fresh clean grain. Black as night, perfect. Coffee color when glass tilted toward light. Taste of a medium roast coffee using double the grounds. A little sweet on back end. Hearty palate, mouthful even when sipping. Great carbonation. Good beer.
3.4 12 oz. bottle. Pours brown-black with a small tan head. Aroma of roasted malt and chocolate. Taste is similar to nose, with some coffee notes. Finish is dry, roasty, and acidic. Decent.
3.8 Jet black pour, nothing more than a ring of tan fuzz, no real head. Nose is espresso and mild coco. Bittersweet. Middle is coffee grounds, dark malt, chalky chocolate. Finish is bitter, a little boozy.
3.5 Nice looking brown black with a tan head. It's chocolate and coffee but not a ton. Very mild and boring, but the alcohol is well hidden.
3.3 On tap at Hyatt Regency Austin. Dark pour, thin head. Aroma was chocolatey. The flavor was carbonated roast. Not a lot of sweetness or other flavor. Kind of bland...and slightly overcarbonated. Had a bitter finish. It wasn’t great. I never would have guessed it was "imperial" anything.
3.4 Bottle from Bearded Monk on the way up to WF. Very dark brown color with a big brown head that lasts forever. Aroma is dark malt and a hint of sweetness. The flavor is roasted malt with a hint of minerals and the oatmeal gives it a fuller mouthfeel. A little coffee bitterness in the dry, lingering finish. Pleasant.
3.8 (Bouteille): Popsicle bleu, vapeur d’anis et vanille dans un ensemble très moelleux et moyennement sucré. Très bon.
3.9 On tap at Zax. Short lived creamy head, but leaves curtains of lacing. Ruby tinged body, biting roast grains in both aroma and taste. Lingering dark chocolate on the palate. Comes off mild, but this is pretty big.
4.3 Very nice smoky flavor with a smooth body and nice finish. Creamy had that lasts through several drinks.
3.5 12oz bottle from sudsmcduff! Pours pretty much black with a small creamy dark tan head. Aroma of chocolate and black malts, burnt brownies, and hints of vanilla. Taste of coffee grounds, burnt chocolate, earth, and a hint of burnt sugar sweetness in the finish.
3.9 San Antonio, Tx - Total Wine & More - 12 oz bottle. Rich, deep dark sable black pour with a tight mocha colored head that clings to the edge of the glass. Aroma has some nice chocolaty undertones, some Kahlua notes, a touch of black coffee. Flavor has a similar profile, some black licorice is prominent, heavy cocoa notes, a touch of espresso in the finish. Nice thick oily mouthfeel. Pretty solid Impy.
3.9 Bottle from gregwilsonstl, thanks for the opportunity! Solid black color with a smallish off white head. Roasty, earthy, cereal grain, light smoke and burnt sugar weigh heavy on the nose. Thick viscous creamy mouthfeel with a touch if alcohol. Light sweet brown sugary malt flavor with plenty of molasses, roast, and dark caramel. Light dark pitted fruit flavor with hints of ethanol and a light graininess. Medium to full body with a light level of carbonation. Huge big thick stout, I wasn’t quite expecting that from the oatmeal stout on the label, but very nice sipper on this cool fall night.
3.7 Another forgotten bottle in my fridge nice surprise. Deep dark pour small beige head. Nose is oats, dark chocolate,, light smoke. Tastes of dark chocolate on drier side not decadent, smoke, earthy bitters, oats, some milk.smooth palate light chalk on finish.
4.6 330ml at home. Great imperial stout, nice and heavy. Very well balanced with a creamy head.
3.7 Dark brown low head. Strong sweet rich molasses and even hint of raisin nose. Subtle sweet barley and maybe strawberry. Mellow throughout. No bitter after taste
3.4 12 ounce bottle thanks to crajun! Yep, I know who my Secret Santa was! Kickass box! Dark brown, medium sized foamy brown head, decent retention. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee, chocolate. The taste is roasted malt, chocolate, bitter hops, lactose. Medium bodied, very low carbonation, lingering bitterness.
3.5 12 ounce bottle poured into hefeweizen glass. Bit of a boozy aroma when colder than the correct serving temp. Bitter hoppy flavors at start when cold, however as the beer warms the aromas flavors open up to the malts and oats in the used for brewing. I suggest serving at the correct temp at the start. The body is creamy which is to be expected from an oatmeal stout.
3.9 Black, big brown lasting and lacing foam head. Nice coffee aroma, bitter coffee taste, some roasted nut tones. Lasting aftertaste. (Houston 201505)
3.4 Entering from my scorecard after having sampled at the Big Texas Craft Brew Fest.
3.4 Bottle at home, pours dark brown with little khaki head. Aroma is nice chocolate and coffee malts, slightly sweet, a bit of roast and char. Taste is dark chocolate, black coffee. This warms with some slight sweetness and a bit of oatmeal. Finishes slightly bitter. Heavy mouthfeel, high carbonation. Nice.
3.6 Bottle at Tortuga Flats. Pitch black with a generous dark tan head that leaves tight lace. Roast nose with chocolate and coffee over toffee and some dark fruit. Medium bitter chocolate with a warming finish. Medium creamy with soft carbonation.
3.6 Pours a clean and dark opaque black with one finger of chestnut brown head. The nose is nice, shows burnt sugar and a lightly acidic coffee roast with dark fruit skins and sweet mocha. A light burnt grain acidity at the front of the mouth with a nice roast note to follow. Bitter coffee and dark chocolate show. Medium full bodied with an acrid finish.
3.8 Dark beer with almost no head. Sweet roasted grain nose. Taste of dark toast, puffed wheat, brown sugar and caramel. Almost smokey finish. Nice smooth moth feel. Nice oatmeal Stout.
3.6 Pours a dark brown color with little tan head. Oats, roasted malt, some coffee, and some cocoa on the nose; follows onto the palate. Finishes with some roastiness.
2.9 Black pour. Small tan head. Little lacing. Slight roasted aroma. Taste is a very dry slightly roasty. Strange licorice presence.
