Innis & Gunn Lager Beer

Innis & Gunn Lager Beer

Available in bottle, can and keg.

Our Lager takes its inspiration from the German style of lager, Helles. Helles was first produced in Munich in the late 1800s as an alternative to the typical ‘dunkelbier’ (‘dark coloured beer’) produced in the area (‘Helles’ means ‘light-coloured’ in German).

Ours, like the first Helles beer that was brewed back in 1894, has a sweet, malty flavour balanced with a light aromatic hoppiness that makes it very refreshing.

We use Naked Golden Oats to make our Lager. Naked Golden Oats are grown without husks so that even more sweetness and flavour can be extracted from the grains during brewing.

3.5 Bottle. Pours a clear golden with a white head. Aroma of pale malts, lime, touch of biscuit. Quite zingy in the mouth, with flavours of light toffee, lime, biscuit, lemon rind, hint of orange, pine nuts. Mild to moderate bitterness on the finish. It is brewed with oats and that shows in the fuller-than-average body. Good stuff, packs a fair bit of flavour. I was pining for a refreshing lager and this did not disappoint.
3.3 Easy drinking beverage with a nice smooth finish. Nothing spectacular but great on a nice sunny day - with a J of course. #B420
3.0 Light lager type as per the description. Sweetness and light malt, refreshing without any real strong depth of flavour. Half decent....
3.3 440ml can brewed in Scotland at 4.6%. Decent sized, short duration head, clear yellow-gold body. Aroma of sweet lager with oat notes. Lowish carbonation. Faintly grassy in the Helles style, along with a touch of apple, but all very faintly. Honeyed malt, which I appreciate, merging with the oats to give a sort of porridge and golden syrup flavour. Decent lager, rich and deep for the style - but considering a Helles is meant to be light and clean, does that mess it up? Only you can decide upon drinking, I suppose. Slightly odd to have light airy hops but a richer thicker malt; Innis & Gunn do like their unusual brews. I can't recommend this other than as a curiosity, but it's not bad. I'm sure some people will like it a lot. But for me, once you get past the unusual element of a Helles lager with oats in, there's nothing much to this beer. A real plain Jane. But hey, she's not ugly. To cut a long story short, if for some reason you want to drink a rather bog-standard but reasonable Helles with oats in, you'll enjoy this. If you don't, then you won't, but you're unlikely to be turned off by it either - it's balanced well enough, with no duff notes. A curiosity definitely worth trying for lager drinkers; others should consider picking a can up if they're especially curious.
3.5 Good lager. Have hit very cold.
3.4 Malty. Reminiscent of Turks malts. Very nice indeed on a hot day.
2.5 33cl can from Simply. Very pale golden color nice stable white head, some particles. Flavor is lagery, canny, grains, grass, a note of apple. Taste is flat, light sweetish, light mineral. Clean finish, average carbonation. An ok lager.
2.9 440 ml Svidja mi se.. slabe arome, bljedunjave i prozirne boje, ali jako ugodnog i pitkog okusa.. jako lako se pije..
1.0 golden, disgusting taste of malted oats. didn't sit well with me at all, just too bubbly, too watery except for the taste of golden naked oats malt which i could not stop tasting. disgusting like all innis & gunn products.
3.0 440ml can from Metro, drunk at home on a cold December evening. Clear gold, a brief fluffy white head, lacing to match and long-lasting rising carbonation. On the nose, herbs, floral honey, grass, grains. In the mouth, medium texture, mild bitterness rising with astringency to the finish, flavours of bitter herbs, subtle citrus, lemongrass, slight sweetness into a crisp, mid-bitter finish. A lager, but just about crafty enough to stand out from the crowd.
2.5 Versa colore arancione, quasi trasparente. Schiuma bianca scarsa e durata breve.Al naso è cereali e aroma floreale. Lo stesso i sapori, leggermente fruttati, agrumati, senza amarezza. Consistenza acquosa. Carbonatazione medio alta. Poco più che discreta.
2.5 Can shared at Peter and Mariska’s 18th October 19. Pours like a lager, smells like a lager and tastes like one, average.
2.8 Blonde aucun goût prononcé, désaltérante lege goût de céréale
2.5 Nothing but an average lager. Strange sweet malty aroma. Sweet, malty, and hoppy, but nothing special. Drinkable average beer.
3.0 Pours a very pale yellow-gold with a white frothy head that quickly fades. Couldn’t detect an aroma, other than a very faint maltiness. Sweet and malty to taste - a flavoursome lager. No bitterness, limited aftertaste. Low carbonation. I enjoyed my first more - on the second I found the sweetness became a bit cloying.

2.3 Słodkie, puste, zero chmielu. Nic ciekawego. Nagazowane idealnie
2.7 Bottiglia.

2.4 Draught at The Kings Highway, Inverness, Scotland. Poured a crystal clear golden with 5mm of bright white dense foam that retained well and laced well. Carbonation high, lively and medium to coarse. Aroma slightly of malt and grain. Taste slightly of malt and grain with a slight citrusy sweetness. Light body. Smooth, crisp and refreshing with a short finish.
