Ipswich Oatmeal Stout

Ipswich Oatmeal Stout

Our award-winning stout is rich and malty with hints of chocolate and coffee. It’s what espresso would be if it had the gumption to be beer. Makes a great dessert...or meal.

4.1 Updated entry merging taster pour at Powder Keg Beer and Chili Festival with bottle pour into nonic pint glass from Greg & Jane's Beer and Wine. Appearance is nearly opaque black--very, very dark brown with light source directly behind--with light brown floaties along with decent sparkle at edges of glass, finger-width plus light brown foamy head with decent retention and minimal soapy lacing. Aroma is chocolate, dark fruit, rich, roasted malts, hint of alcohol. Taste is rich, sweet dark fruits and chocolate with bittersweet roasted malt backbone, slight coffee bitterness. Palate is medium bodied with silky, thick texture, lively carbonation with sweetness yielding to dry, earthy, roasted pleasantly bitter finish. Overall, aroma and taste border on RIS, slightly overcarbonated. Really nice.
3.8 Completely black, with a small light brown head. The aroma is filled with oatmeal, dark rye bread and sweet syrup. The taste is sweet, neutral, woody and with a short hop kick. Amazing.
3.6 Bottle. Pitch black pour with a nice micha head. Coffee, oat, roast, bitter chocolate. Medium smooth body. Relatively short slightly bitter finish. A bit more creaminess and body would be better
3.8 スタウト コーヒースタウトみたいな
3.5 Pours dark brown with a creamy tan head. Nose is roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, and some dried fruit notes. Flavor is balanced malty sweetness and dark-chocolate-like bitterness. Astringent finish. Full body. Moderate carbonation. Good brew.
3.2 22 oz bottle. Pours nearly black with a large and durable tan head. Nice lacing. The aroma carries more hops than expected English hops? O: disappointing given the high ratings on BA.
3.8 Mmm, this a very good beer all around! Attractive black pour w/ a tan head that leaves a nice circle of lacing. The aroma is dominated by the roasty notes w/ a touch of chocolate. The taste is quite robust & almost Russian imperial esque w/ the somewhat bitter finish. Great complexity for a stout & quite tasty! Fairly smooth as well - delicious!
3.9 22oz bomber. Opaque walnut-colored beer with a tan somewhat persistent head and light lacing. Aroma is somewhat sweet, roasted oats in it. Taste is pretty great, with lots of roasty toasty flavors and no hop bitterness--thick mouthfeel, enough to match the strong taste. Really nice beer, highly recommended for fans of the style.
3.6 "Big sweet roasty aroma and flavor. Pretty well balanced by ample bitterness, but in the end still a sweet beer with chocolate, coffee, a little smoke & dark fruit. Smooth and enjoyable."
5.0 So Chocolate so good so much rich coffe roast. Great rich thick malty mouthfeel with slight well balanced bitterness. perfect tight bubble carbonation. Such a big finish as well Perfect.
3.7 Bottle. Pours deep, dark brown with creamy tan head. Aroma is chocolate, lightly roast malts, oats, faint plums, and light earthy notes. Flavor is rich chocolate, earthy bitterness, coffee, faint dark fruit notes, and light ash; dry finish with some chocolate notes lingering. Full body and medium carbonation
3.8 From a bomber. Pours wry dark brown with a bubbly tan head and nice lacing. Smells like booze, sweet chocolate, some vanilla, and cookie malt. Tastes like chocolate, vanilla bean, coffee beans, and dry malt.
3.2 Reviewed from notes. This was poured into a pint glass. The appearance was black with a half finger off white foamy head that quickly dies into the beer with some spider web lacing. The smell had a toasted oatmeal up front with some light dark chocolate hanging around over some light roasted coffee bean. The taste had a thick roastiness over some coffee bean and then a slight oatmeal come out. On the palate, this sat right at a medium in body. There was a subdued carbonation running over my tongue. Overall, I say this was a pretty good oatmeal stout to come back to if I could.
4.1 This brew pours inky black with a dark brown head. There are aromas of chocolate, coffee, and oatmeal. The is a complex combination of chocolate and coffee flavors that has a rich texture. Overall this is a well produced stout.
3.3 Bottle exploded upon cracking the top and took 10-15 minutes to settle down. Coffee, chocolate, espresso, roasted nuts, and a nice hop backbone to cut the sweet. Pretty good but probably would have been much better properly carbonated.
3.5 Cask (gravity) @ GBBF 2013, Great British Beer Festival, London Olympia, Hammersmith Road, London, England W14 8UX. [ As Ipswich Oatmeal Stout ]. Clear dark brown color with a average, open and frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white to beige head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, burnt, chocolate, tart chocolate. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet, light acidic and moderate bitter with a long duration, chocolate sweet, tart chocolate, bitter chocolate. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft to flat. [20130814]
2.8 Coffee and toasted malt dominate the aroma. The aroma is pleasant although somewhat too simple. The mouthfeel is good with acidity and malt well-balanced. The taste has strong coffee and roast flavors with some hops. Too little malt backbone for a truly good flavor.
3.8 Full-bodied, dark stout, hint of caramel and coffee. Smooth finish. Solid flavor. -March madness 2014
3.2 Atlanta, Ga - Tower Beer, Wine & Spirits - 22 oz bomber. Bottle exploded upon opening (points off of overall for that) - Dark black pour - thick (too thick) and foamy off-white head that sticks around way too long. Aroma has some creosote and chocolate - nice. Flavor ha some nice espresso notes, some potting soil, a bit of bittersweet baker’s dark chocolate and a touch of licorice. Nice chalky mouthfeel. Pretty solid - just wish there was not so much carbonation on the pour - could only pour about two ounces at a time!
4.0 Pours dark brown almost black with a creamy brown sugar-tan head that evokes the head of an ice cream soda. Wet natural lacing as the head fades to a finger or so. Aroma is rich roasted chocolate malts and a touch of oats. Taste is sweet chocolate malt and oatmeal into bitter roast coffee malt. Notes of ash to close. Really well-balanced between sweet and bitter. A quality oatmeal stout.
3.2 Aroma was somewhat confusing - wood, a cheesiness, roasted malt. Pour a brownish-black with a robust lasting espresso head and abundant lacing. Bittness is the dominate flavor. Burnt grain, burnt coffee, burnet wood. Medium body and excessive carbonation. Overall, too much burnt tast and too much carbonation. An oatmeal stout should be smoother and smoothness is not what this beer is about"
3.7 Cask Third of a Pint at GBBF 2013, Olympia, London Aug 2013 - Black in colour. Very Malty; roasty malts, roasted barley, oatmeal, dark chocolate and espresso coffee. Fruity; dark fruits, raisins. Hoppy; some balancing hop bitterness. Rich and smooth. Sweet bitter roast malty chocolaty and coffee throughout. Very drinkable. Nice Oatmeal Stout!
3.4 Rich, roasty, bitter oatmeal stout. Black thick pour with tan head. Aroma was ash, dark chocolate, coffee. Taste pretty much followed straight. Real malty. Oily feel. Pretty decent stuff.
3.5 12oz bottle from The Beer Store in Wilson. Black hue, zero visibility with fully lasting thick frothy caramel head. Fair lacing. Moderate coffee, chocolate, malt and alcohol aroma. Heavy bitter chocolate & coffee up front with a medium coffee & malt finish. Dry on the palate. I would drink this one again.
3.5 1/12/13. 12oz bottle thanks to rdixon77. Black pour with a small tan head. Quite toasty on the aroma, ash, charcoal, some coffee and very dark chocolate. Ashy flavor, charcoal, coffee, straight up black malts. Slick mouthfeel, moderate carbonation. Not bad.
4.0 Bottled: unk ABV 6.4% Black with some tannish foam. Initial nose comes through with good, strong oats and tootsie rolls, graham and some nice, nice cocoa. Nice nose. Slightly dry, coffee toned, grainy, oaty flavor up front with some nice bitterness on the back end. Nice malt character on this beer - so far soo good on this one. Thick and smooth with a lighter carb and semi dry character. Nice beer, really nice surprise. Serving type: bottle 05-03-2012
4.0 Coffee, chocolate, bitter, full mouth feel, big and black with mocha colored head that clings to the glass. Good stuff.
