Ithaca Double IPA

Ithaca Double IPA

Made with 100% New York State hops. India Pale Ale (IPA) is a style of beer renowned for its hop character.
Some modern brewers have taken this tradition to the next level with the "Double IPA". What better way to parade the potential of NYS hop farming than with our new Double IPA.

Hop farming once thrived in New York State. In the early 1900s, 95% of all hops used in the US were grown here in New York. However, soon the combination of crop disease & prohibition put an end to local hop growing. There is a new movement afoot to bring commercial hops back to NY. The Ithaca Beer Co. has teamed up with Pederson Farms (Seneca Castle, NY) to bring you this exceptional ale.

3.0 Pours a bright, hazy golden orange with a dense one-finger head that dissipates fairly quickly to a ring leaving sporadic lacing. The smell is surprising sweet with peaches and apricots on top of the big citrus hop base. There is also some caramel malts in the nose as well. The taste doesn’t quite deliver on the unique smell and is a mix of citrus and pine and some bready malts. It has an abrasive bitterness through the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and very sticky with strong carbonation. This is an interesting DIPA though I wish the flavor measured up to the unique aroma. Still worth trying.
2.3 bottle. piney hops. dark crystal lends an unpleasant dark fruit/prune flavor. alcohol edge. didn’t like this one. ahboo.
3.8 On draft at Capone’s. Pours a dark orange/brown with a medium white head. Aroma of grassy hops and light pine. Taste of grassy notes, light pine and faint citrus.
3.1 Thanks to xnoxhatex for sharing. The body was dark gold with a white colored head. At first you get the obvious grapefruit. Then, behind that, there is a little bit of funk and apples. The taste was straight ahead grapefruit with some almonds. A fairly dry finish.
3.7 12oz bottle from homebrew mystery swap. Clear amber with small white head. Aroma is fruity hoppy, a little caramel, a little dough, a lot of citrus hops, some pine, pretty enjoyable. Citrus flavor resin hops with some pine and caramel and dough, grass, all around pretty nice. Medium body and a little syrupy, but not bad. Overall a very a nicebeer but a little bit too aged.
3.5 330 ml. found at Premiere Gourmet.A hoppy beer, was not sure what hops used, but leafy taste. Even a tad of wintermint. Not a bad double IPA, short of being a hop bomb and well malted. Just very hoppy.Carbonation was a bit high, this would be interesting on cask. bee-aye #2901.
3.8 Starts off with a strong vanilla-laden oak bomb with a relatively biscuity aftertaste that is dry with a nice heavy body. I sense the usual IPA suspects from the pine to grapefruit but with a rather organic grassy envelope surrounding it. Even though its well made, at times it seems a bit harsh and perfume-laden. I think they over did a hop (cascades maybe?). The aroma rocks! This reminds me of Cascazilla on roids. Bottle from NEPA spilt from Stef.
3.2 12oz via trade. Pours orange with a bright white ring of a head. Big citrus nose and a sweet and hoppy taste. Not bad, a little eh. but ok.
3.0 Bottled. Poured clear, very decidedly medium orange with a short cap of whitish head. The aroma was quite juicy with grapefruit and oranges leading the way.. some toffee was deeper, and grassy notes were evident with warmth.. smelled deceptively soft and approachable. The flavor was more aggressive, if my last comment wasn’t indicative enough.. unfortunately it was in the form of sticky, non-descript sweetness, alcohol, and lesser, but still unpleasant stale cardboard notes.. bitterness was moderate and citric in nature.. the stale notes stuck on the finish. Heavier-bodied and sticky on the palate with only OK balance. Not a good IIPA.
3.0 Poured amber with a thin off white head. Aroma was grassy with a bit of hops. flavor was slightly hoppy with grass, celery, and some off flavor I couldn’t figure out. Finished bitter, good carbonation. Meh.
2.8 Hmmm.... Hardly a hop bomb. Looks nice, deep orange kinda hazy. Small head, minimal lacing. Smells just like a barley wine. The hops are virtually absent from the aroma.....and taste. This is a freakin barley wine unless this bottle is an old one. Style points are right on the money for this one. Only thing good I can say about this one as far as being a DIPA is that the 10% is undetectable. If they decide to call this a barley wine I’d probably have given it a higher score. Strange.
3.8 Smells of pleasant floral hop, slightly sour. Tastes very smooth and hoppy with a decent malt presence. Hides the 10% alcohol very well. Very enjoyable
3.5 bottle. Deep orange amber color with piney citrus hop aroma. Slight harsh bitterness, piney citrus hop flavor. some caramel sweetness. Decent
3.5 Dank hop aromas, citrus, piney, caramel, and a litte spicy in the aroma. Pours dark amber. Grassy, musty, with hints of cannabis, citrus, bitter flavors. A different hop flavor than most IIPAs.
3.4 Bottle. Pours orange amber with an off white head. Aroma is floral hops, and yeast with some sweetness. Medium body, very sticky and mouthfilling. Flavor is fresh bitter hops with notes of pine and caramel. Pretty good.
3.7 A great beer and one that is woth trying again. BTW, what is "yesyouam" talking about?
4.2 Ithaca Double IPA is a very clear and sparkling amber ale with a dense, light khaki head that fades to a thin film that leaves pretty nice lacing. The aroma is bright, sweet, floral and piny. There is some light cereal in the nose. It’s a well balanced aroma. There is a fruity, perhaps peachy, quality to it. Juicy. The medium bodied beer is soft and sticky, but the finish comes suddenly: crisp, dry and a little sharp. It has a nice full flavor that shows a nice balance. It is very bitter and destroys the tounge. There are flavors of tropical fruit and bubblegum. The malt is very smooth and mellow. It’s a touch sweet and boozy. The aftertaste is a long green bitterness bomb. It may be the slightest bit woody, but it’s only twigs. It fades in and out in a non-shocking manner. This beer is very straightforward. The malt simply does the needful and nonchalantly as possible, while the hops rob your tounge’s house before it gets back to the store! Seriously? This is Ithaca? It pretty much whumps this style in a simple, but unique way. I can only imagine that this was dry hopped with at least a couple different things. It’s the fresh fruity thing that sets this one apart. It’s a little more brazen than Cascazilla. Rock on, Face in the Lake!
3.7 Pours a hazed amber gold with almost no head. Nose is fairly subdued, which I find odd since I just tried the Flower Power India Pale Ale by Ithaca right before this and found the fragrance off it to be much more full and interesting. Overall the nose is a mild sweet apricot like tone with a obvious hop influence. Flavor is smooth with a touch of bitter, but mostly there is just the hop character here. Sweet overall tones. Feel is low on carbonation and slightly thick on the liquid. Overall I have to say it is odd that I am going to end up rating this one lower than the Flower Power IPA which I just reviews no less than an hour ago. It is definitely a smooth and highly drinkable DIPA. But the fact that this breweries IPA had more flair and character to it seems odd to me. Worth trying, for sure.
3.8 12-oz bottle received via trade with jah noth. Pours hazy orange with an average, creamy and rocky, off-white head, somewhat lasting with good lacing. Aroma is average malt (meal, cereal, caramel), heavy hops (perfume, flowers, citrus, pine), average yeast (dough, sweat) with notes of pineapple and peach. Full bodied, creamy texture, average carbonation, and a bitter finish. Average duration, light sweetness, moderate acidity and bitterness. This one really hides its alcohol well and also features a nice balance of ingredients.
3.2 12oz. bottle: Pours a fiery amber with a foamy, stick head that just won’t quit. Fresh pine and citrus nose, with a healthy dose of caramel to back. Fresh, citrusy hops start the body, with a sugary sweetness creeping to balance. Very drinkable, but not really unique in any way.
2.7 12 oz bottle from Beastiefan2K; Light flowery hop nose; copper with a very small offwhite head; flavor of very light hop bitterness and caramel. Is this really a DIPA. I would rate it a mediocre IPA!
3.5 12 oz. bottle from slob - you rock! Pours cloudy amber, about the color of honey, with a fast diminishing, small off-white head that leaves spotty lace. Sweet malty aroma, ripe summer fruits, buttery citrus toffee, hints of dusty pine branches. Flavor is bold, with caramelly malts, sweet orange juice, evergreen needles, spicy, bitter herby hops, leave an astringent pucker and an alcohol warming lingers, but overall a little unbalanced for my tastes. Full body and crisp, tingly carbonation.
3.6 Pous a lightly clouded yellow/orange hue with a light white head. Aromas of pine, oranges and perfume. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with flavors of pine, a hint of chocolate and a mild hint of citus and nuts
3.8 12oz bottle. Golden orange hued ale. Lots of citrus flavor and a smooth malty sweet finish. Quite impressive, especially for 10%. Very crisp and floral, not as syrupy and thick as some Double IPAs.
3.0 Cloudy, dusty yellow, nice puffy head. Oranges and citrus, not overtly hoppy. Definite malt balance, a bit too much, as it could have more bite.
3.3 Small, short lived tan head sits on top of this orange bodied brew, pretty hazy as well. Nose is mainly caramel malts with some faint citrus notes, mint. Body is med/full lightly oily on the palate with a low carbonation level. Grainy malt flavors up front with orangey hop flavors along with some tea baggy flavors, a bit resiny and grassy. Malts seem fairly sweet and or not enough bittering hops to offset the sweetness, under attenuated, all the above? Finish is a bit sweet, fruity with a touch of alcohol warmth. 12oz bottle received in trade from coldbrewky, thanks Steve!
3.7 sampled on tap at the brewpub. light amber/dark orange in color. Aroma is alot of floral hops as well alot of caramel. Taste: I would say this beer is more in balance that alot of double IPA’s- tons of pale and crystal malts (caramel) with a moderate amount of floral and citrus hop character. Bitterness is light to medium for the style and the body is full. clean and well made, but I like a more robust PNW hop character in IIPA’s.
3.5 Dark Orange/Amber color with Off White Skin. Very Strong Aroma of Caramel and Citrus. Medium Bodied. Dry Hop Hazed Mouthfeel. Nice Strong Sweet Caramel Beginning...Carrying Through in the Background to Balance out the Aggressive Hopping of this Brew. Nice Citrus Notes Popping in and Out...Nice Clean, but STrong Taste...Sweet Caramel and Dry Hopped Finish. Nice Subtle Warming. Very Smooth for 10%. After Continued Drinking the Dry Hop Taste Sticks to the Roof of Your Mouth. Overall a Very Solid Double IPA from Ithaca.
3.6 (bottle, thanks Brewfiend) Pours a copper color with a medium white head. Aroma is very citrusy and smells quite similar to canned mandarin oranges. Very sweet caramel malt flavor initially, but then the hops come in at the finish which leaves a nice bitter flavor.
3.5 Nice orange color with faint head. Orange citrus hop nose a little too much malt in the hoppy body.
