J.K.'s Scrumpy Orchard Gate Gold Hard Cider

J.K.'s Scrumpy Orchard Gate Gold Hard Cider

Orchard Gate Gold is fermented naturally in small artisanal batches from a proprietary blend of organic apples grown here at our Koan Family Orchards in Michigan. We have produced hard ciders here since the 1860s. This is the same traditional recipe that helped save our farm during the great depression. There will be slight variations from batch to batch, just as nature makes no two apples alike! Enjoy our authentic hand bottled American Farmhouse "Scrumpy" Cider with family, friends & food.

3.5 Can @ Tilburgs Bierfestival shared by 77ships. Clear very pale yellow color, no head. Smell and taste apple, sweetness, sugar. Quite like i actually. Not bad at all.
3.6 Can from Tanakaya shared at a tasting. Not a bad little cider. Big apple nose with some nice yeast character and light funk. Slightly too sweet and heavy but nice funky yeast notes come through on the palate and nose. Not bad, but maybe a tad cloying. Still enjoyable and a good cider to share.
5.0 this is a perfect cider. this is the cider on which all other crap ciders are judged. like drinking fresh milled and chilled apple cider, with subtle carbonation and the warming glow of alcohol. truly the best.
3.5 500ml bottle thanks to Matt. Pours out a amber color with a ring of a head. Nose is big rich apples some tartness and a little sweet spice. Taste is more of the heavy apple some light sweetness and plenty tart.
3.6 Can. Lovely juicy apple nose with a good dose of funk. Rich sweet apple flavor, almost like stewed apple, quite juicy on the palate, some spicy notes, sweetness quickly fades into a decent dry finish. Different from your usual hard cider, but i quite enjoyed it, would pair well with rich or spicy foods if you want to add a short sweet edge.
3.8 Just a good honest fuller flavoured cider. Not hugely tart, but faint whiffs of barnyard juxtaposed with the sweet apple. A tad heavy in the finish and 500ml can is a big ask, but split between two, this was a delight.
4.4 Yum, this is pretty good. I’m no authority on cider, but this sure has many appealing qualities to it. Natural apple, spicy, tangy, earthy aroma. A little foam on top. Flavor is more sweet with a hint of tart, spice, apple peels, spice. Very juicy. Great palate. Really drinkable.
3.3 Bottled. Cloudy light cooper. Has a bold Apple taste upfront has a dry app,e after taste. Really good cider
0.8 WHY do people like this pizzle?! I bought it, over a locally-made, after seeing the high ratings on here. It tastes like vinegar-tinged carbonated apple juice. Repulsive. Undrinkable.
4.4 It’s the best cider I ever had and much cheaper than Tieton Frost. Taste like pure organic apple juice with a hint of alcohol and not sweet. I love it. The aroma is amazingly robust natural apple. No artificial found. Flavor is even better. Amazing! Best drink I’ve had in months, and I’m a beer guy.
3.2 Clear amber pour with a ring of bubbles. Aroma is strong sweet apple and lightly floral. Taste is candy apple and light earth. Very sweet overall. Slick medium palate.
3.6 Pours hazy golden with a thin white head. Strong aroma is mostly fresh apple. Flavor is strong and tasty, all fresh apple - were the apples picked yesterday? Hell, it is listed as organic. Mouthfeel has OK body and fizz. Don’t worry, drink Scrumpy!
2.6 Bottle, shared at the lake. Hazy medium gold, medium carbonation. Big sweet apple character, a bit musty, but very sweet. Pretty simple really, and too sweet for my preference.
3.0 660ml bottle - shared by Elvira - thanks! Lovely sweet fruity apple aroma, really juicy. Rich orange for a cider, cloudy. Mega sweet palate, actually sugary. But tons of apple too. Pleasantly carbonated, but that can’t save the palate from being stickily sweet. Only a tonne of ice can fix that problem, alas. Pleasant, once you’re past the sugar rush. So sweet it reminds me of non-rateable nordic macro alko-pop ciders. However, even those have remembered to include some sharpness to the mix. In fact there’s no evidence of yeast being involved with this alcoholic apple juice at all. Another notch in the "Americans haven’t got a fucking clue how to make [style X]" post for X=scrumpy. Nice cider, with ice cubes for drinkability, but please don’t pretend it’s something which it isn’t.
4.3 Runs as a nice solid golden opaque from being unfiltered - Little fizz - Runs like an English cider but a lot sweeter however it has a Normandy after taste :)
3.4 Brought to Super Bowl party. Ours a cloudy golden brownish orange. Slight white foam. Aromas of big sweet juicy apples. Apple cider. Taste is sweet tastes just like apple juice. Very refreshing.
2.3 Aroma of sour yeast and rotten apples. Not a great cider, funky muddled flavour - not fresh.
3.8 Tap at Marciero. Cloudy orange-gold with lace. Warm apple nose, almost baked. Lightly acidic. Rather sweet and fruity but with a good acidic balance. Great.
3.9 This pours a murky golden yellow color with a slight bit of carbonation. The aroma is that of fermented apple cider. The taste is sweet, easy with hints of cinnamon and caramel. Sweet and juicy but not as BIG and SWEET as other ciders like Angry Orchard. Worth trying if they sell this in your neck of the woods.
3.2 22oz in Seattle. Darker clear orange. Somewhat funky and earthy aroma. Juicy red apple with a lot of sweetness. Some tart apple finish. Nice enough.
3.3 22 oz bottle from the Beer Authority. Deep golden pour. Strong apple nose with almost a pie spice thing going on, flavor is intensely sweet, red apple, caramel. Entirely drinkable but definitely on the juice side, sweeter than I’d like. Limited carbonation further contributes to that impression.
3.7 Bottle. 11/8/14. Pours translucent straw with a thin, barely-there white head. Aroma is apples galore, sweet, cider. Taste is really nice; apples for days, subtle hint of funk and sour, some caramel and toffee, hint of spice, touch of syrup; otherwise, apples all day, every day. Mouth feel is oily, medium-full and rich. Medium-low carbonation. Light lacing. No discernible alcohol. Really quite tasty.
3.4 "Upon opening a sour apple blast hits the nose, but immediately fades to a light twang in the background/ Lightly sweet, dry and solid across the board. Was hoping to challenge the barreled ciders, which it did not, but it was nice. Top 5-10 in style. "
3.3 650 ml bottle. Pours a hazy orange gold with no head. Sweet aroma of apples. Sweet flavour of apples, yeast and a light tartness with a dry, mildly acidic finish. Medium body with a smooth, oily texture and flat carbonation.
3.6 On tap at Cohill’s. Pours a golden color with no head and fruity flavor. This is a very smooth cider. Cider’s aren’t my favorite but this was very good. Maybe a touch too sweet for my taste but very hard to believe this is 6%, there was no trace of alcohol in it, very refreshing.
4.1 The best cider on Earth from my sweet home state. Little barn yard mixed with the freshest tasting apple taste ever. If I had one very mild complaint it would be that it could be a tiny tiny tiny bit less sweet.
3.1 22oz bomber given to me by my Sargent. Pours a hazy pale straw color with a tiny fizzy white head. Aroma of sweet and tart apples, white grapes, and a hint of vinager. Taste is flat and sweet. Lots of sweet apples, pear juice, white grapes, sugar, and a hint of yeast.
3.5 660ml bottle. Hazy golden pour with afew bubbles that give a small white rim. Aroma of fruity apple & apple skins. Sweet juicy apple flavour balanced with alittle dryness. Nice smooth mouthfeel, medium bodied, soft carbonation, clean finish. Very drinkable.
3.6 No noticed bottling information. Appearance: This looks like unfiltered and unpasteurized apple cider from a cider farm. Some head is noted, but only on the edges. Aroma: The aroma is purely apples and apple skin. Enticing and sweet, but not cloyingly so. Taste: Clean and crisp hard cider. Sweet with an apple skin like dryness. Very nice. Palate: Medium to full-boded, unfiltered texture with a light sparkling quality to it. Overall: Very drinkable, an adult apple juice. Sparkling and enjoyable, but a bit pricey considering it’s near $7 for 22 ounces.
3.1 Bottles of various vintages, 2010 and onwards. Large-bubbled bright gold body sports a moderate, but somewhat fizzy white head that recedes quickly to the edges. I guess I’ll just state right away that the head/carbonation speaks to my biggest complaint with this cider; the lack of carbonation. I think if these guys would not pasteurize this stuff, it would be one of the best there is. As is, it’s still a delightfully flavorful, full-bodied yet crisp, drinkable American cider. Very light lactic notes dance on the edges of the palate, with deep, juicy apple flavors and a mild but refreshing tartness. It’s odd, especially, that they pasteurize this, given that they aren’t filtering it. I dont think the carbonation has long enough to develop, and it further inhibits any funky flavors. Anyways, enough harping about that, though I do think it leads to more looseness/wateriness in the mouthfeel and more susceptibility to oxidation. Great stuff, nonetheless, perhaps a touch too sweet.
