3.5 Good malty beer with distinguished background of hops, nuts, roasted malt. Nice old ale
3.2 Bottle. Very dark red with huge foam. Sweet malty aroma. Light sweet aroma of toasty malts and notes of toffee.
3.0 Bottle from Tesco. Pours medium brown, single finger tan coloured head. Very clear. Aroma of toasty malts, spice, caramel, toffee...Taste of smoke, liquorice, caramel, toffee, toasted malts, some spice...very nice!
3.8 the aroma is caramel and fruity with some hints of nuts and vanilla... the taste is caramel with notes of plum, black currant, chocolate and licorice... sweet and dry aftertaste...
4.4 Very dark, red tinted with off white head that coats the glass. Earthy nutty aroma. Good carbonation. Very easy drinking well balanced earthy malty flavour with herbal hop bitterness to finish.
3.4 Light malt sweetness, burned toffee and dark fruits on the nose. Low earthy, herbal hop. Biscuit, burned toffee light choc and mild roast on the palate. Firm bitterness lingers. Medium to full body. Perhaps a bit harshly bitter in the finish.
3.5 Bottle 500 ml. Dark bronze color. Malt aroma (caramel, bread), toffee, fruits. Same taste with good and rich maltiness, caramel, dark fruits, a little hop.
3.1 Bottle. Black colour with copper reflexes, rocky head, decent lacing. Aroma is burnt, some ash, a bit of herbal hops. Medium bitterness. Light body. Ok, but nothing spectacular.
3.7 Bottle - every time I’ve had this on cask before it always seems to be slightly off, so I decided it’d be a good idea to pick up a bottle. Copper coloured with a foamy cream colour head. Aroma of coffee, biscuit and cocoa. Taste of chocolate, biscuit and caramel. Medium body, light carbonation.
3.2 Bottle from Beers Of Europe [160115] Dark copper brown, clear, frothy off white head, good lacing Aroma of caramel, some toasted malts, dab of rust, hint of coffee roast Taste of caramel, some spicy earthy hops, soft toasted malts, slight dark bitter chocolate, twiggy hops, dab of roast, slight dark fruits Palate - Medium carb and body, smooth, soft bitter roast. Finish as main flavour, fairly bitter earthy tail Overall - Less complex that I remember on cask, seems less malty.
3.3 Very thick, utterly stable, dirty-creamcoloured head over redbrown to chestnut, clear beer. Caramel, toffee and mocha, sweet. Faintly roasted. Bitterish-roasted, with burnt caramel all over, and surprisingly little sweetness, if any. Bit of parsley, and again mocha. After some time, hints at hops. Light to maybe medium body, certain slickness, feels better carbonated than it looks. Not too sweet, which is good. Still, I’m sure I would prefer a cask in the Lake District.
3.7 Bottle from the Old Windmill, Coventry. Deep dark red, medium body, soft carbonation. Liquorice and toffee malt. Very good.
3.6 roasty, red, clear, tan foam, medium sweetness, medium bitterness, medium sourness, full body, thin feel, soft carbonation, an old ale if ever i had one. it’s a darkish red and tastes roasty and slightly sour/fruity, . soft texture and low carbonation mean you can nail it down happily. very nice.
3.0 A reddish brown coloured beer with a thick off white head. A light malty and bready aroma. Dry mouthfeel. A dry malty taste, nutty and a hint of burnt sugar. There is a bitter hop flavour in the background. The finish is well balanced between dry malt and bitter hop.
2.3 Subtle caramel aroma. Very dark brown but not black. Slightly fizzy. Quote a chocolatey taste. Fizzy on the tongue.
3.3 Bottle. Poured into the 50cl Leffe goblet .. Good ass brown looking beer with robust ass cream. Smells skunky ,so fuck wasting my time talking about it . On the palate everything is dictated to by pasteurised vibes. Malt tang giving brown bread . caramel ,some dried fruit . Kida earty hops and wheat . A bit of roasted malt giving chocolate bitterness .some good texture but skunky vibes hold this back.
2.9 Bottle. Clear chestnut coloured body with a small offwhite head. Malt, metal, dark fruit, sweet caramel.
3.5 Lovely dark colour, good body and a smooth feel, this has a strong malt flavour with a chocolate aftertaste
3.3 Dark brown pour with off white head, caramel malt aroma, caramel taste bit earthy wet leaves woody some fruitiness.
3.5 Bottle from the Spar. Appearance - dark amber with some red chinks. Nicely proportioned head. Nose - honeycomb some smoke and some chocolate biscuit. Taste - toffee and burnt biscuit. Palate - medium bodied with a crunchy texture and a fairly good finish. Overall - quite gnarly but good complexity.
3.1 500ml bottle from a local Tesco store. Lasting, frothy beige head leaving spotty lacing to the glassware. Clear dark brown body colour. Malt driven aromas, mid-sweet. Dark malty flavours, hints of liquorice, caramel, and ash. Mild roasted bitterness to a prolonged ending. Fine bodied. Nice, a bit unvaried though (hotel room at Leeds University Campus 08.07.2014).
3.4 Bottle shared with McTapps. Fine one with some chocolate, a bit of straw, some hops and high drinkability. Classic one to enjoy.
3.4 Bottle from Rudat in Dortmund. Pours out in a clear brown colour with low head and flat body. Aroma of nuts, hops and barley. Taste of mild hops, barley, nuts, caramel, straw and dark berries. Nice one, enjoyed it a lot.
3.1 50cl bottle Caramel and chocolate aroma, very roasty. Foam only lasts for about a minute, it’s completely gone afterwards without any lacing whatsoever. Long lasting bitterness, medium body. Malty, with a very subtle hint of hops. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it to a friend, but it’s not a bad brew.
2.9 Drunk from 50cl bottle bought in Wakefield, UK. Enjoyable ale.
3.1 500ml bottle (ALEhouse, Riga) Good call, Marduk - I’ve had this many times, I can’t believe I’ve not rated it (then again, I’ve had the cask version anyway). Sweet caramelly aroma, stinky rotten malts. Turns around in the mouth though. Lovely retronasals, chocolatey malts, sweetish caramel. Some huskiness follows in the taste alongside some really deep roast, almost a dry burntness. Palate is simple, a bit sugary, a little fizzy. Finish has slightly thin drying hops, a bit eaerty and herbal. Reminds me of the real ale I once knew, but this is nowhere near, it’s fizzy and messy.
3.5 500ml bottle. Clear dark brown color. Medium size, thick yellow head, stays. Dark fruits, dried plums, sweet, sweet, faint caramel in aroma. Raisins, woody, some herbal aspects, tobacco leaf (in a nice way), smoky roasted malts in taste. Dry herbal bitterness in aftertaste. Spicy notes too. I like it.
3.3 Sehr angenehmes malziges Aroma, süßlich, etwas sirupartig. Der Geschmack ist dann relativ unauffällig, malzig, gut. Insgesamt solide, aber nichts außergewöhnliches.
3.2 Ins Glas ergießt sich ein dunkelbraunes Bier mit geringer Schaumkrone. Geruch fruchtig, leicht schokoladig, holzig, bitter. Geschmack röstmalzig, leicht getreidig, fruchtig.
