Jester King Ol' Oi!

Jester King Ol' Oi!

Barrel-Aged Sour Brown Ale. In Britain, what started out as young or “mild” dark ale was once aged in oak barrels to make something that was likely similar to sour brown ales of East Flanders. Using a similar base recipe to Commercial Suicide Dark Mild, Ol’ Oi! is Jester King’s tribute to that tradition.

3.5 bottle. Dark brown with a small white head. Aroma has ripe raisins, funk, tartness, vinegar notes. Somewhat vinious with notes of ripe and tart raisins. An ok sour red.
3.5 Amber light hazy with a small off white head. Aromas of overripe fruit, some light bready malts and woody notes. Fine carbonation, light texture and a medium body. Offers a light sweetness with a lovely structured acidity. Short light juicy finish.
4.0 Bottle at Uncle Babe’s in Ghent, shared with Ster during Patersholfeesten 2016. Jester King’s take on classic Flemish red. Thick, dense, frothy, lacing, pale greyish white head, very dark chestnut brown colour with mahogany hue. Aroma of passion fruit, old hazelnut shells, some caramel, sherry vinegar, balsamico, wet wood or even a hint of old furniture, redcurrant, dry red wine. Vividly fruity onset, redcurrant, passion fruit and unripe blue plum accents, medium carbo, lean mouthfeel, bit vinous, supple middle with nutty maltiness and a caramelly hint through which a drying fruit tartness and eventually drying wood tannins run, bit wineish and sherryish finish with a powdery, bready yeast accent in the end as well as a very light toastedness and persisting drying sourness. Perhaps a tad too sour like many American interpretations of the style, but in this case well backed with a rounded maltiness, making this very accomplished at what it intends to be. Lovely oud bruin!
3.6 Draft at Copenhagen Beer Celebration 2014. Pours clear amber with a foamy, white head. Moderately funky and sweaty, with leathery berry character. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly tannic on the finish, with more aged, leathery berries, sturdy funk. Good one.
3.4 Bottle. Hazy hazelnut brown with a large tan head with good retention, lace and regeneration. Strong nose. Cognac, dark wood, sourness, flowers, light tobacco. Flavour follows: Dark wood, tobacco, twigs, flowers, berries, minerals, dark bread. Medium/full body, fine carbonation, some sweetness, medium/heavy sour. Lactic sour finish. Pretty much what I expected, but fairly sour and not really my favourite style anyway.
3.9 750mL bottle courtesy of a secret Santa I don’t remember when, pours a murky reddish brown with a medium tan head. Aroma of oak and citrusy lemon Brett, with light caramel and toffee. Taste of oak and sour funky barnyard Brett hitting leather into earthy dusty toffee and caramel malt. Solid!
3.9 Bottled 01/14/2016. Pours deep brown, off white head. Aroma is sour funk, cherry, raisins, tart, sort of a red wine oak barrel character. Flavor is oak, cherry, sour funk, raisin, caramel. Soft sort of mouthfeel, not overly acidic. So nice.

3.6 Bottled.Pours hazy, deep ruby with an average off-white head. Aroma of sour fruits, caramel, wood notes and vinegar. Slightly sweet flavor that ends up being dry and tart. Light to medium bodied, watery texture and soft carbonation. A nice Sour indeed. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

3.8 Bottle shared by alexsdad06. Poured hazy dark ruby color with an average frothy tan head that mostly lasted with very good lacing. Moderate to heavy toasted malt and sour dark fruit with an small wood aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy complex sour & sweet flavor with a medium to heavy complex sweet & sour finish of moderate to long duration. This beer also exceeded my expectations.
3.8 750 ml bottle from Errl shared with Tmoney99 and the Fifty West guys. Pours a hazy brown color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have tart, dark fruits, vinegar, wood, caramel, some funk, very nice beer.
3.9 Draft @ ML Fontainas.

3.6 An unclear amber beer with a thin head. The aroma has notes of brettanomyces, malt, and over ripe fruits. The flavor is sweet with notes of lemons, brettanomyces, wood, and brown sugar, leading to a dry finish.
3.8 Darker mahogany, light tan head. Brown sugar, a bit of sweaty socks. Funky. Tangy sour, sweeter. A bit oily, medium body, not a ton of carbonation. Good.
3.5 Pours a nice red with a high offwhite head that leaves superior lacing. Nose is of fruits and light oxidation (nuts). Taste is of grapes, roasted cereals and moderately acidic. Vinous with a medium body and moderate carbonation. Good but not the best sour red or even Jester King out there for that matter. Lacking a bit of wow.
3.1 Bottle 750ml. Pours hazy brown with medium beige head. Good lacing. Aroma is of nuts, roasted malt, sesame seeds. Taste is of acidity, nuts, roasted malt. Palate: Medium body. Soft-medium carbonation. Overall: Ok I guess.
3.4 Bottle (750 ml) at tasting. Shared by mathieuc, thanks! Slightly hazy amber with a medium tan head leaving good lacing. Aroma is of caramel, mild spiciness, oak, berries and nutty notes. Taste is moderately sour and a bit vinegary with mild to moderate spiciness, berries, oak spiciness and earthy notes. Medium body. Modate carbonation. Mildly spicy finish. A decent Sour Brown example, but nothing really stands out. It’s a bit too acetic to be enjoyable in large gulp. Complexity level is moderate. Ok.
