Jester King Wytchmaker Farmhouse Rye India Pale Ale (Batch 1-8)

Jester King Wytchmaker Farmhouse Rye India Pale Ale (Batch 1-8)

Earthy rye and piny hop flavor and aroma meet spicy, funky characteristics from our farmhouse yeast in this American-inspired farmhouse ale.

Note: This Farmhouse version replaced the original Wytchmaker Rye IPA when Jester King switched to a farmhouse yeast for all beers. The original bottles feature a small Jester King sticker on the neck; newer bottles do not have this sticker and say "Farmhouse" in small print on the label.

4.0 Bottle, 75cl, at RBNG-14 Grand Tasting. Lots of off-white head forms over an unclear golden body. The aroma has a nice faint woody touch, it’s lightly peppery and there’s citrusy and some malty notes. Orange peel in the back. The flavor has the same peppery, woody touch, with some pale malts and quite a lot of orange. Full body, quite dry, and quite heavily carbonated. Lasting finish with a good bitterness and some orange. Pretty wonderful this one, could easily have a few of this. 140215
3.9 Bottle 750ml @ RGNG-14 Pours slightly hazy golden with a huge off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, caramel, rye, light funk, brett? and yeast. Taste is light to medium sweet and medium bitter with a long fruity, yeast and bitter finish. Body is medium, texture is thin to oily, carbonation is soft.
3.9 At RBNG 2014 Halden. Golden color , good foam. Immediate hop aromas , pine , citrus, quite fruity & Nice brett. Medium body & complexity. Some bitterness - Nice sourness ; well balanced. Very enjoyable
3.6 Bottle from beastmaster shared after two gushing Black Damnations. This was the third gusher of the night but luckily not sour or gross. I guess the farmhouse yeast went a little crazy. November 4, 2013 dated bottle poured on Jan 25, 2014. Pours cloudy/hazy yellowish orange with a massive white head that goes on forever. Aroma of serious cat piss (in a good way), some lemon peel, some sharp bretty type aromas, and funky grass and hay. Flavor is light honey, lots of lemony citrus, a hint of spice (I assume from the rye but it is far back in the background), and a good bit of dry bretty finish. Light mouthfeel and medium plus carbonation, nice and airy and very drinkable. A nice changeup from the standard stuff out there. Solid brew.
4.1 Aroma is very floral, noble hop aroma with some rye. Taste is rye tang with some bitterness up front, hop flavor and some farmhouse funk and spice. This one is extremely well balanced.
3.5 75 cl bottle @ home (WARNING: gusher, so open in the sink and preferably have a couple of glasses ready, unless you want to lose most of the bottle’s contents - my bottle certainly kept gushing for a while). Pours hazy yellow with some sediment and a white head that leaves a lot of lacing. Aroma and flavour are funk, citrus, yeast, herbs, and pepper - with a dry finish.
3.8 Bottle: Hazy gold-amber with a foamy, off-white head. Spicy, funky aroma....rye malt. Taste is white pepper, orange, rye. Funky, fruity, with a nice citrus bitter. Another nice one from JK.
4.0 Tropical fruit and spicy aroma. Hazy Golden with white head that persists. Orange Peel, rye, pepper, apricot taste. Great dry finish.
3.9 Very solid beer. Hoppy, citrusy and rye in the aroma. Taste is crisp, bubbly, not overly bitter. Very refreshing.
3.9 Bottle back home with my Dad. Pour is hazy golden with a big white head and great lacing. Big pineappley, lemon peel, soapy, biscuity, doughy, tropical fruity, band-aid, and herbal aroma. Taste is tart lemon peel, soapy, a hint of spicy rye, orange peel, doughy, grassy, pineapple, and peach with a lightly bitter tart finish. Medium body with high carbonation. Really tasty and refreshing.
3.9 Bottle. Orange, strong rye malt, and orange peel aroma. Hazy golden yellow with large head. Over-ripe orange malt and moderately bitter grapefruit peel flavor. Light funky finish. Very nice beer.
4.2 Bottle. Nice light, effervescent hoppy aroma. Combination of pine and citrus. Light, lively body. A bit of peppery rye spice comes through midpalate. Very drinkable, cleansing the palate instead of coating it with a resiny feel.
3.6 smells hoppy with tropical fruits and citrus. Pours hazy yellow with nice white head. Taste is not as bitter as an average ipa. More sweet and tangy with a little bitterness throughout. Overall this is a good beer and should be tried simply for its uniqueness.
3.1 Bottle. Pours bright yellow with a white head. Smells very fruity- pineapple, citrus, very bright aroma. Has a very strong elastic brett taste, very bitter finish, resinous hops, hay, herbal. Medium carbonation, light body, long finish. Interesting. Good.
4.0 bottle. pours a sparkling bright yellow with a big fucking head. smells of pineapple, and dough. damnit, why didn’t i say pineapple upside down cake? flavor is pineapple, pine, with that mellow funk that makes me think of chewing on rubber bands while smiling. some lemon notes in the finish. overall bitterness works with these flavors. is a hop forward "balanced" beer.
3.3 750ml bottle pours hazy orange with 2 finger head. Nose is funky citrus, lime, musty. Taste is funky lime, faint pine notes, plastic, flour, dough, hay. Finish is a strange earthy lime, hay, dry, bitter, peppery. Weird combination, doesn’t all mesh for my tastes. OK.
4.1 Thanks to crajun for the trade! Pours a medium yellow with a tall sticky white head. Complex aroma pine resin, fruit, funk; thinking Saison not IPA here. The flavor follows the aroma; again Saison type complexity. Very nice interesting beer.
3.5 750ml bottle, batch 7, with a honey gold color, and a big rocky white head, with a nice yeasty, fruity nose, with some pear, apple, pineapple, lychee, lemon esters, and some doughy, faint lemongrass spicy, lemon, green grapefruit peel notes, and with a panettone cake dough, mild floral citrus, leafy, grassy hop accent in the aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a yeasty, doughy, fruity candied orange, tangerine, lemon peel, good flowery leafy, grassy, tropical fruit, citrus hoppy character, with some panettone cake dough, faint spicy minty, lemongrass, cedary, green grapefruit rind flavours, with a faint toasted, rye, pale cerealic malt undertone, leading towards a yeasty, doughy, lemongrass spiciness, green grapefruit, lemon peel, lingering piney, leafy, citrus hop bitterness finish.
(Rating #5346)
3.4 Bottle..Pour is hazy gold with a large white head..NOse is spice, yeast, citrus, funk, earth pine...Taste is nice funk farmhouse, spice, citrus, heavy carb, fresh hay
3.9 A: Hazy Golden Straw/Amber Hue, Passes Mild Light, Great White Head, Decent Lacing S: Earthy, Mild Spicy, Mild Citrus T: Malty, Black Pepper, Mild Rye, Mild Lemon M: Great Carbonation, Light to Medium Bodied, Neutral Based, Semi Spicy, Semi Drying Overall, a nice well balanced beer that doesnt blow you away or burn you out. Has some spicy and earthy notes.
3.7 Location: 750 ml bottle from a Spec’s, 10/6/13 Aroma: The nose is sweet and fruity, some hops too, pine, yeast, and a little spice Appearance: Pours a murky dark orange color with a huge, gushing beige head and heavy lace Flavor: The flavor is medium sweet, yeasty and fruity, some spice, and a medium bitterness Palate: The body is medium, it has a slightly sticky feel, and a plus carbonation Overall Impression: This is a pretty interesting one. It leans more sweet than hoppy for this style. The farmhouse yeast provides a nice component here as well. I’d prefer a little more hop bitterness in this style, but it is a solid one.
