Jester King Wytchmaker Rye IPA

Jester King Wytchmaker Rye IPA

India Pale Ale brewed with nearly three pounds of hops per barrel and 15% malted rye. Dry, flavorful, drinkable beer with vibrant notes of citrus, tropical fruit and pine.

Note: This entry is the original Wytchmaker. Beginning around the time of their first anniversary, Jester King switched to a farmhouse yeast for all of their beers. All ratings after this switch should be entered under the Farmhouse Wytchmaker Rye IPA entry. The original Wytchmaker bottles feature a small Jester King sticker on the neck; the Farmhouse Wytchmaker bottles have the word "Farmhouse" in small print on the label.

3.8 Pours hazy pale orange with a thick white head. Strong orange peel and rye aroma. Taste has a robust rye taste with lemon and pineapple. Finish is dry and bitter. Nice!
4.0 Reviewed from notes: loved the old bottles with the 2nd Jester King label atop. Pours a nice amber color with off-white head. Pine, spice, and caramel and wheat notes; follows onto the palate. Finishes with light fruit and citrus.
3.8 Entering old notes. Thanks to Rosebud butternuts for this one. Pours a hazy yellow-orange with a white head. Nose is big caramel, slight spicy rye, some big citrus character, and some pine. Flavor is a nice burst of spicy rye, citrus, slight pine, and mild tropical fruit. Medium to full in body for the style and very nice and remarkable overall.
3.6 From notes. Poured amber, with a big, off-white head. Fruity nose, with peaches, orange, pineapple and honey in the aroma. Pleasant hops, with rye present. Oily, smooth.
3.4 28.09.2012, 0,75l bottle sampled @ Borefts: Frisk fruktig lukt med preg av lys malt, humle, grapefrukt, sitrusskal, tørka frukt, gras, høy. Lett konsentrert bitterbeisk fruktig smak med preg av lys malt, humle, beiskt gras, høy, tørka frukt, sitrusskal, sitrus. God bitterhet som set litt. Grei.
3.6 Clear amber of color iwth a foamy off white head. An aroma of hops, citrus and malt. A flavor of citrus, hops, pine, dry, weak malt, grapefruit, citruspeel and high carbonation.
2.2 Alright let's be honest, this is an IPA. Very hoppy. The bottle says wild yeast, Brettanomyces and souring bacteria. Other than MAYBE a slight Brett SMELL, the taste is nothing more than your standard Sierra Nevada IPA. Looking for a nice sour? Pass on this one. Look for Cuvée des Jacobins, any RRBC sours -the best, or Goose island Lolita and/or Juliet. (Juliet being the superior). Jester King, I want to love you bc I love your artist, but please, get a real brewmaster in house. No more piss and asphalt, please.
4.1 Bottle, pours dark gold with large white head, aroma of fruit, taste of fruit with a slight bitter hop finish. Good IPA
4.0 Appearance: the beer pours with a large white head that settles into a very nice dense head, the beer is a darker yet very hazy gold color, good head retention, good lacing Aroma: very strong spice, almost a sweet spice, citrus, orange, some bread, egg, yeast, some funk Taste: lots of spice up front almost reminds me of pumpkin, a certain sweetness hints, coriander, Palate: leaves mouth dry, has a slight bitter aftertaste, moderate mouthfeel, lively carbonation Overall: very interesting beer, sweet flavors with strong spice notes that remind me of pumpkins, still not a very sweet beer overall, bottled 11-4-13. Enjoyed 1-24-14
4.0 750ml bottle at home - held to the light, pours a hazey yellow with a lasting frothy white head. The aromas are complex; bergamot, candied lemon peel, spruce, white tea, and grains. Taste is tart and dry with a faded bitter hop finish and is overall refreshing. The yeast strain in combo with the rye and hops create a spicy unique ale that I look forward to having again.
3.6 Very solid beer. Great hoppy Aroma, the Rye, yeast and hops work together nicely to give this beer a slight viciousness.
3.9 750ml bottle. Murky peach with an off white head. Smells carbonated, flowery, light horse blanket, old musty pine needles, yeast, grapefruit skin, pepper. Moderate+ carbonation, interesting body, very dry, chardonnay, more pepper.
3.4 Bottle. Orange caramel malt, brown bread, spicy rye, and alcohol aroma. Hazy amber with a moderate off-white head. Caramel malt, sweet tart orange, light rye flavor. Medium body, soft carbonation.
3.4 Orange straw colored cloudy beer with a slight red tinge. Strong yeasty flavor with some citrus notes
4.3 750ml bottle from Archive Beer Boutique. Lots of froth and bubbles in the first our. Head slowly settles to reveal a golden amber beer. Hoppy aroma with a very good flavour that lingers in the mouth.
3.4 Bottle..Pour is golden copper with a thin white head..nOse is dry, spices, cardboard, honey, citrus..Taste is citrus, spice, fruits, musty, pine..
3.7 375ml bottle. Pours a cloudy burnt orange color with a two finger foamy bright white head, that slowly dissipates. The aroma has a lot of pine, as well as some biscuit malt and rye notes. Spicy rye bread flavor that is quickly joined by a very pithy bitterness; the combination gets really spicy by mid-palate and the spiciness continues into the finish. Moderate carbonation, creamy medium body with a great drying aftertaste.
3.9 Bottle shared at Pibar, Lausanne Cloudy amber color, with dull hue, and large frothy head (the bottle is a slow gusher). The aroma is very nice, fresh hops, with light spicy character and a touch of cedar. Still too much carbonation, having an impact on the mouthfeel; malt flavor, with strong spicy character, leaning to cardamom and cedar; strong bitterness, with plenty of good hop resins, and some hop fruitiness, bitter oranges; long final. Complex, not elegant, but very interesting.
3.9 750 ml. bottle. Dark abler color with a thick tan head. Malty aromas with caramel, hint of citrus, light fruit. Medium carbonation, plenty of hops for a long finish,
Bof...
3.4 Bottle from Piggly Wiggly homewood. Pours light brown with a couple of inches of khaki foam. Lots of lacing in the glass. Fragrant pine on the nose. This is aged a bit since I’m only getting faint rye and not a ton of pine or citrus on the tongue. Finishes clean. Probably would have been bolder fresher.
3.9 Bottle@Guren. Haze golden. Intense pine citrus. Gentle heavy dry hoppy bitterness. Dry finish. The body quite intense with Rye notes. Great complex brew.
3.8 Bottle from mane liquor. Pours a hazy vibrant orange with a big off white fluffy head. Aromas of rye, pine, some citrus and lots of tropical fruit. Taste is the spicy rye and citrus fruits. Nice bitterness that lingers. Really enjoying this one very seasionable
3.5 750 ML bottle with a wicked label. Hazy golden yellow, massive white head, falls to a thick half finger and sticks around. Lots of lacing. Nose is bread, yeast, grass, pine, grapefruit and citrus. Taste is still a lot of bread with pine, grass, citrus, spice and grapefruit. Opens up more in the mouth. More rounded is more like it. Medium bodied, chewy and decent carbonation. Bitterness is more obvious in the palate than in the taste. Dry, spicy citrus finish. Fun IPA
4.3 I’ve been here 3 weeks and this was my first ’good-beer’ in Austin. I’m from Kirkland WA (Seattle)...Yeah, I had to go with the hype-ie beers first (shiner bock/ lone-star) and as you could imagine there was disappointment! So I yelped a bit and found that the best beer store in ’town’ is a min-mart (7-11) likes store (no joke) called, Sunrise Mini-mart....this place was nothing less than AMAZING!! The selection was comparable to Bottle-works (those from the Seattle area will know what I mean)...good stuff OK this Beer...I requested from the knowledgeable staff (I heard that Sam is the best, but I spoke with a cool guy named Rob (or was it Ron?!)...I asked him to give me a local beer comparable to Stone IPA (cliche, eh?!) any way this was where he steered me...and here is what I think... Appearance...I’m always a ’softy’ and give kudos (is that word making a comeback, if not, my apologies!!) for unfiltered beer!! Taste: Mellow hops up front were mellow, but gained momentum as I progressed through the beer... Mouthfeel is ultra-smooth and creamy with a malty thick full-body. The initial taste is an absolute hop assualt on the palate! A spicy, stinging and salty plethora of citric nuances literally overwhelm the senses. Earth, leaf and grass flavours pull-thru, then are followed by an alcohol presence and spiciness. The malt in this beer is definately present but gets its ass fiercly kicked by the hops. Malt includes some toasted, slightly bready and light honey flavours with an even malt sweetness. It hardly balances the beer, but does keep it somewhat control. Beer finishes with residual hop spice and malt sweetness, which tends to linger for some time. Notes: This was a pretty amazing recommendation....’MAYBE’ even worth the $10.99 Belgium bomber Sunrise Mini-Mart charged (I’m a bit of a penny-pitcher!!)...This is an absolutely marvelous beer for all the hop-heads out there, albeit very daunting for those who are not into hops to the extreme. For what it is, it’s crafted to near perfection. A "Wow!" beer for sure. 7..3 % abv. (from the bottle reading)
3.7 Bottle from Cotteridge Wines; cloudy amber pour with ginormous foam white head, quite funky aroma, sour funk continues in the taste also get lip smacking citrus, peachy hop don’t get much rye. Very good more farmhouse than IPA.
4.0 Hazy orange pour with a white head. Aroma is spicy, a little farmhouse, floral, citrus. Slightly resinous. Flavor is wonderfully spicy, dry, pepper and citrus. Complex flavorful beer. Great aroma and fantastic flavor. Nice beer.
4.0 Bottle. Pours a hazy medium orange. Thick foamy head with good retention. Strong aroma of tropical fruits and black pepper. Flavor is nice and spicy with rye and cracked pepper balanced by some citrus and tropical notes. Slightly dry finish. Very good.
(Rating #4678)
