When introspection fails, it’s time to look outward for inspiration, perhaps Northward! One of the people who inspired me this past year is my friend Gabe Fletcher, of Anchorage Brewing Co. We brewed this beer together. I hope it inspires you. Northward!

3.0 Draft from HopCat. Pour was a hazy yellow. Aroma had a lot of grapefruit with some peppercorn adding dryness. Flavor was a balance of tart and bitter.
4.7 Draft at Jerry’s. Orange-gold with brilliant, white foamy head, good lacing / Dusty nose of citrus-tropical fruit, straw, dry hop / Light body, lovely balance of fruit and biting bitterness / Elegant flavors of grapefruit, pineapple, lemon, pear, straw, green peppercorn / A bitter beauty.
3.7 Sample at B spot, Auburn Hills. Pours light lemon hazy color white head. Aroma is sour funk, lemon, hay, some Belgian esters, sort of a white wine oak quality. Flavor is sour funk, not too acidic, Belgian golden ale notes. Sort of a blonde ale with sour notes feel. Aroma is great, but flavor is a bit more bland than I’d like. Still quite good.
4.0 On tap at Hazel. Bold gold body with medium head. Nose is citrus, faint, floral. Delicate. Taste starts subdued, gentle and then kicks heavy into the lemompeel. Really good stuff.
3.8 Draught. Pours a cloudy golden orange with a fading off white bubbly head. Aroma is of citrus, melon, peppercorns, grapefruit, tart. Taste is of citrus, peppercorns, grapefruit, melon, slightly tart finish. Oily mouthfeel, dry finish, medium carbonation.
4.0 Draft at Bru Craft. Very hazy deep yellow gold pour with a solid show of frothy white foam and thick lace. Oaky lemon pepper biscuits. Sharp and woody. Grapefruit pith and zest. Meyer lemons. Chanterelles. Kaffir lime leaves. Violets. Artichoke hearts. Golden raisins and plums. Straw. Aloe. Green peppercorns. Very dry tannic finish. About as huge an oak barrel wild ale as can be imagined!
3.7 Tap. Hazy sunflower yellow, thin white head. Sour white wine, grapefuit rind, melon and whit pepper in the aroma. Bitter grapefruit rind, earth, and really dry. Aroma was better. Dry in the bitter Brett range. Lighter body.

3.9 Tap at Jolly Pumpkin Detroit. Slight hazy golden with white head. Quite peppery, sour berries, grapefruit, grassy hops, some spicy notes, light fresh baked bread. Under medium sour and light sweet. Under medium bodied. Nice one!
3.9 On tap at Thin Man in Buffalo, NY. Pours a golden yellow, white head. Definitely some pepper, white wine, bright fruits throughout. It was listed as a saison rather than a sour, which feels more apt to me. Nice beer.
4.2 Bottle at Mikkeller Bar, march 25th 2016. Hazy orange body, thin white head. Aroma is funky with pepper, apricot, banana. Big grapefruity taste with barnyard, mildly sour, zesty farmahouse finish,. Quite excellent.
Chiude vagamente erbacea, citrica, buona.
3.8 750ml bottle, JP version. Hazy golden straw color with a lacy whIte head and big bubbles. The aroma is funky, citrus/grapefruit, hay, white wine, and pepper. The flavor is decently tart and biting with grapefruit rind. Medium bodied, very lively on the feel. A solid one.
Fantastiskt. Men inte riktigt lik bra som Anchorage.
3.0 Runder, trocken-bitter säuerlicher Antrunk. Deutliche Brettnoten, dabei noch halbwegs süffig, weiche Bitterkeit. Trockene Holznoten, grasig hopfenbitter, mittellanger, vom Brett dominierter Nachhall. 9/10/9/9/6/9
3.7 Pours a clear pale orange, light white heavy lace. Aroma is oak, Chardonnay, white grape, Brett funk. Flavor is oak, grape, lime, grain.
3.8 Pours clear gold into a snifter. Bright white head recedes to bubble rim. Oak and lemon aromas. Bright grapefruit and Brett upfront turning back to grapefruit and then back to Brett in the lasting finish.
3.8 Bottle, slight gusher, slightly cloudy amber beer, creamy white head, great lace. Aroma honey, spice, kombucha, squash. Taste is kombucha, pineapple, peach, citrus, black pepper. Palate is light, carbonation surprisingly moderate considering the gush. All pumpkin beer should taste like this.
3.9 Sampled August 2014 A steady pour into my teku glass produces a fat-two-finger thick, pale tan colored head. The beer is a bright, pale honey color that shows a clear, golden hue when held up to the light. The aroma is quite inviting, with a mix of citrus, tart lactic tartness, earthy spices, earthy oak notes, and an earthy fermentation character. Woody pepper notes, softly toasted oak notes, and light notes of freshly milled oak mixes with grain notes of rustic bread with a thick crackling crust. The aroma is not as complex as I might have first have hoped for, but the balance between the notes that are here really sing. Lightly tart up front, it picks up a bit more tartness towards the finish as the grapefruit zest accentuates this. The grapefruit is bright in the finish, and there is a bit of pith character that melds with a musty fermentation character, and a bit of earthy phenolics. Soft peppery notes and a lingering woody astringency and light oak flavor are also found in the finish. There is a bitterness to the finish that seems perhaps grapefruit derived, and provides a bitterness that reminds me of hops. The texture has a soft lushness to it that is seems to be a combination of lactic slickness and structured oak, yet is still light and quaffable. This is a really nice, thoroughly enjoyable beer. The balance that the entirety of this beer is able to achieve is just quite fantastic.
4.2 Bottled. Golden coloured. Unclear. Dense off white head. Aroma. Sourness, funk, leather, some barnyard, citrus. Flavour. Full of barnyard, leather, horseback, citrus, sourness and loads of funk. medium to full bodied. Ends dry and sour.
3.9 Bottle: Poured a clear golden with white head. Aroma is sour baby diaper. Taste is sour tart funky fruit with brett.
4.2 Aroma of sour apple and oak. Appears slightly hazy clear gold with big white foam and light lace. Very mild malt character, mellow bitter tannic oak stands out, with mellow but deep sour, lingering mellow tannins, very very nice. Fizzy light palate. Overall, a great beer, only jolly pumpkin seems to get this mellow lingering tannic bitterness, so very nice.
3.8 Bottle. Deep hazy dark gold. Long lingering head. Very nice sour, peppercorn nose. Slightly thin, dparkly body. Very peppercorn, lemongrass, lemon zest, bit of grapefruit tang and sweetness. Complex and tasty.
