Jolly Pumpkin / Maui Sobrehumano Palena 'Ole

Jolly Pumpkin / Maui Sobrehumano Palena 'Ole

Sour, barrel-aged version of the beer by the same name. Brewed in collaboration with Maui brewing.

Yes, Michigan and Hawaii are connected. It should be obvious to you now, as you hold this beer, and read this label. John and I designed this beer with two noble fruits from two noble states, Michigan & Hawaii. Cherries and liliko’i. Starting to see the connection? I feel it. So does John. 4391 miles may separate our breweries, but no our thirst for the exquisite. Hipa! -Ron

Working with Ron is something I’ve always want to do since I had my first Jolly Pumpkin beer. Years later, it’s a reality. Being involved on this project was an honor and a privilege. Mahalo to my MBC crew and to you, fans of craft beer! -John

3.1 On tap at Muted Horn Berlin. Comes with a hazy, dark amber color and a tiny white head. Taste is simple sour, acidic with unspecific fruits (Maybe unripe berries ). Taste follows the nose. Slightly sweet finish. Was expecting a little more
3.6 Aroma is clove, vinegar and soured grapes. Taste is light sweet malts, soured grapes, citrus and funk. Light sweet barrell notes rounds out the palette. Little head retention and clear body.
4.2 Bottle. Moderate grain, caramel and hay for the malt, light herbs for the hops, barnyard and dried leaves for the yeast, with red apple, cherry and a hint of vinegar in the background. Head is small, wispy, off-white, with slippery lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is murky orangey amber. Flavor starts heavily acidic and sour, then finishes heavily acidic and lightly to moderately bitter. Palate is light to medium, watery, with a lively carbonation and a very tart finish. Excellent Sour Ale with plenty of bite and complexity.
3.7 BBE 12/21/16 ??? 750ml pullo virosta, kuumasta kaupasta, juotu lähes kokonaan yksin. Oranssin ruskea väri, olematon vaahto. Tuoksu makeahkon viettelevän hapan. Suutuntuma hapan, sangen juotava, lähes kutsuva juomaan vielä yhden hörpyn lisää. Imelä happamuus jää pyörimään suuhun, pientä kuivuutta, makeuttakin aistittavissa. Isosta happamuudesta isot pisteet.
4.1 Bottle. Pours clear amber with minimum head. Aroma berries, woody, sourish, balsamico, hay. Taste : berries, red vine vinegar, sour, acidity burns even tongue. Acidity sour finish.
2.3 750ml bottle (Pothouse, Tallinn) (5:3:4:2:9=2.3) Misty orange, brief head. Woody sour aroma, dirty yeastiness. Taste is harsh yeasty sourness - vinegary. Palate acidic and harsh. Finish dirty and yeasty. God, do I have to drink all 750ml of this crap? Narp. Rerate: 750ml bottle - TY Juks (6:3:5:2:10=2.6) Pleasant berry sour aroma. Kinda acetic taste, vinegary bite. Yeastiness too, not good. Pretty overpriced, but I don't want to punch anybody for making this. Then again, I'm mellowed by not having paid for it.
4.0 750ml bottle. Pours hazy amber colour. Thin white head. Sourness, notes of barnyard, slight acidity, fruitiness and hints of berries, earthy notes in the aroma. Notes of berries, fruits, notes of white wine, slight acidity. Apricoty and berriful aftertaste. White wine as well. Rather light bodied, bit acidic, well balanced wild sour ale.
3.8 Bottle at Cott Botts; hazy burnished amber pour with a bubbly light tan head, aroma has passion and sour action, taste has subtle sourness, jammy fruits, hints of passion, easy drinking sour.
3.5 Aromat: cierpki, owocowy, lekko octowy, wyraźna stajnia, intensywny.

3.9 Poured a yellow from church key. Big sour notes. Some citrus. Funk. Really excellent
3.7 On tap at Hops & Pie. Light amber and clear appearance with a beige head. Aroma of tart cherries, grains, light barnyard funk and a light earthiness. Similar flavor, adding a mild tartness. Light to medium body with a light puckering feel, soft carbonation and a smooth oaky finish. Enjoyable.
3.9 poured a cloudy red color with aromas of light funk, tart cherries, some dragonfruit, and some light lactic acid. Flavors are the same, tartness up front but not much in the end, light and refreshing.
3.6 Draught @ Pine Box. Amber with some haze and thin head. Aroma is classic jp barrel, brett, quite tart, lots of barrel, brett. Fairly dry.
4.1 Bottle. Dark ruby red in color... Aroma of cherries, dark malts, berries... Flavor is tart cherries, berries, light floral notes... delicious
4.3 Hazy dark copper hue with a thin light ivory head. Brisk sour wild funky nose with some gentle Amber malt and a bit of cherries and guava. Smooth flavor with a nice sour pop, gently acidic with some cherries and red malt, and a little tropical funk. Wonderful.
4.1 750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 12/21/2016. Pours slightly hazy light reddish orange/amber color with a 1 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big tart cherry, passion fruit, mango, strawberry, melon, pear, lemon, green apple, grapefruit, red grape, oak, pepper, hay, straw, and grass; with light leathery funk, red wine vinegar, wheat, bread, and yeast/oak earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, fruit juice, oak barrel, and moderate pale malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big tart cherry, passion fruit, mango, strawberry, melon, pear, lemon, green apple, grapefruit, red grape, oak, pepper, hay, straw, and grass; with light leathery funk, red wine vinegar, wheat, bread, and yeast/oak earthiness. Light-moderate fruity/lactic tartness and yeast/tannic oak spiciness; with lingering notes of tart cherry, passion fruit, mango, strawberry, melon, pear, lemon, green apple, grapefruit, red grape, oak, pepper, hay, straw, grass, light leather/vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, fruit juice, oak barrel, and moderate pale malt flavors; with a great malt/tart/spiciness balance. Slightly puckering, but never astringent on tartness. Light-moderate dryness from tart/spiciness, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, fairly crisp/acidic/tannic, and lightly grainy/bready balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 6%. Overall this is an awesome fruited wild ale. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, fruit juice, oak barrel, and moderate pale malt flavors; very smooth, crisp, and easy to drink with the modest acidity/tannins. A really enjoyable offering.
4.1 On tap at Jolly Pumpkin. Delicious. Pours brownish red. Tart and smooth. Cherry and passion fruit are well balanced.
4.0 Bottle thanks to Niels ! Pours a rusty crimson color with a finger of eggshell foam. Nose is musty passionfruit, juicy cherry, some aceto character and soft toasted grain. Palate follows with lots of juicy cherry mingling with nuances of tropical fruit and composted earthy cranberry, grape must and lots of old wet wood barrel character. Acid level in high but the round malt sweetness keeps it in check like a flanders style red. Fun to try !
3.6 Brouwer’s, Seattle. Clearish red, creamy gray head. Sweet, rich, light cran-tart with cocoa nib. Sweet, growing complexity sip. Brown ale, with some darker leather accented by light cranberry tart, just over top. Interesting, a little muddled, a little banana. Not bad.
3.1 On tap at Brouwer's Cafe in Seattle-USA. Copper clear pour a bit dark, little ivory lacing. Nose: molasses, caramel, a little funky note, strong wood. Mouth: a bit mild, watery, just a reminiscence of the nose. Bummer.

3.6 Bottle share at Leighton’s, many thanks to LKS. As ’Jolly Pumpkin Sobrehumano Palena ’Ole’, 2012 vintage, 6%. Vibrant orange, clear, pretty still, small foamy off-white head. Aroma is balsamic strawberries, some malt vinegar, redcurrant. Body is medium, smooth, soft carbonation, tooth-coating. Taste is cherry, malt vinegar, muddled fruits and dry into the finish. Pretty decent.
3.8 750 mL bottle shared by Gus at his birthday bottle share. The pour is a clear orange red with a thick collar of white head and no lace. The aroma is incredibly sour. There is a light acidity and battery acid there but the fruits are great. The flavor mimics this very well. There is a bitterness for sure. I like the sour fruits. Nicely balanced, but I would imagine this is better as it were fresh. The mouth feel is thin and light with a crisp carbonation and a lingering sourness. Good for sure
3.3 Bottle shared with koleminer20 and Gus for his birthday. 2012 vintage. Aroma is very fucking funky, almost an off manure smell, horse blanket, sour. Appearance is reddish brown, off white head. Taste is weed, some sour, dank, barnyard, meh. Mouthfeel is medium body and light to crisp carbonation, dry sour aftertaste. Overall, I thought it would be much better but it’s drinkable.

Light to medium sweet flavor with mellow acidity, some lemon, leather, light grass, damp wood, more tangerine. Light bodied with average carbonation. Super clean on th finish, with more lemony acidity, subtle woody dryness, hints of berries, salty sweat. Excellent. Extremely well balanced and drinkable.
