2.7 The aroma is very nice with molasses, licorice, coffee, and chocolate. The appearance is black with a thin tan head. The taste is like the aroma but very bitter and astringent. It’s almost like tar. The palate is typical for the style. Overall not a great beer but has some good qualities of an impy.
4.1 Great Russian imperial with big chocolate notes big roast. Great thick mouthfeel without being too sweet. Great carbonation nitro like. Fantastic.
3.1 Sampled from a bottle purchased in Las Vegas. Black as pitch with a thick tan head. Aromas are not particularly strong, and the taste is of very charred malts. Flavours of coffee and dark chocolate. Heavy bitterness and strong taste of alcohol. This beer lacks the smooth sweetness of some Imperial Stouts, but is powerful and characterful. I would give it a higher mark if the flavours came together a little better.
3.4 Tallahassee, Fl - Whole Foods Market - 12 oz bottle. Deep dark, pitch black pour, quickly fading khaki colored head, smalls beads cling to the edge of the glass. Aroma has some rich topsoil earthy notes. a hint of unsweetened chocolate. Flavor is pretty solid with some creosote notes, s touch of licorice, some bittersweet baker’s unsweetened chocolate. Mouthfeel is thick enough, Much better than expected and nice to have just a good ’ol impy stout without is being barrel aged or infused with something.
3.3 Pitchy pour with a dark tan, quickly collapsing head. Standard longneck, lackluster label. Decent, dark, olivine aroma. On the acidic side, coffee, nutty roast, a bit boozy. Thanks to PorterPounder.
2.5 "the last of the line-up of 5 Joseph James beers we sampled last night. Due to the style, I still held out a little hope, even though the other 4 beers were not worth a darn. Poured like a stout, but not an imperial, in color. Had some chocolate and smoke aspects in the nose and flavor, but way too subtle for a RIS. Not horrible, just not good enough. Average beer. Crappy Russian Imperial."
3.3 Bottle courtesy of IBrew2or3. Cheers, Dave! Pours a dark stout brown with a tan head. Nose is earth, coffee, dark chocolate, and roast. Flavor is roast, dark coffee, dark chocolate, and bitterness. Flavor finishes with bitterness and some roasty chocolate. Medium in body and a nice imp stout overall.
0.7 Sometimes you get what you pay for... A RIS (?) bomber for $3... Hey I am glad to know that a Russian Imperial Stout is a dark ale. Bomber bottle served in a snifter. Something is really off about this beer and I am just not talking about the moderate brown hue either... There is a combination soy sauce and funky barnyard tone that I am sure is NOT intended. Really just a weak arse excuse for a stout. A 1973 Pinto in an Aston Martin world — feeling sick.
3.2 Dark brown/black color; Medium slightly creamy body; Aroma of toasted sweet malt, cocoa, some dark fruit, & coffee; Flavor of roasted sweet malt, caramel, chocolate, hops, and soy sauce; Taste was a bit off.
3.5 12 ounce bottle from Tully’s in Wells, Maine; roasty and chocolate dominate.
2.5 22 oz bottle. Pours black with a decent tan head. A really funky aroma that was hard for me to get over. A lot of roasted coffee and malt. Finishes a little sweet, but short. Not my favorite.
3.4 Bottle @ home via rotter and trade with Ibrew2or3. Thanks. Pours a deep brown appearance with a thin dark brown head. A ton of roast in the nose. Some coffee and earthy bitterness. Moderate amount of chocolate. Low to moderate carbonation. Some bitterness in the flavor but not all that bad. Plenty of chocolate. Earth and roast. Drink pretty decent. Nothing crazy good but pretty well balanced.
3.8 Pours an opaque, very dark brown with an ample, creamy. mocha head. Creamy chocolate followed by coffee in the aroma. Thick, but not viscous. Smokiness dominates in the flavor. Chocolate and coffee are also noted. Could use a little more depth.
3.7 Dark beer with only hints of mahogany when held up against the light. This foamy beige head. Nose with lots of chocolate, caramel corn and alcohol. The flavor is dominated by the coffee and bitter chocolate, with some molasses and burnt sugar sweetness and some licorice. The abv is obvious and a little big as it warms. Nice big impy stout.
2.4 Very carbonated - fills a pint glass with a quarter bottle. Flavor is good once you let the foam settle.
4.3 Nice stout. Smooth. A tad thick but not too much. Roasty. A hint of sweetness. Very drinkable.
3.0 From a bottle poured a dark brown color with a small maount of head. Strong sweet malty flavor with a quick finish.
3.8 12 fl oz bottle from Total Wine & More, Clearwater, FL. Samled on January 27, 2014. Marked 9.3% ABV. Black color, small brown head. Sweet, alcohol, roasted scent. Sweet, roasted taste. Medium to full mouthfeel, low bitterness.
3.5 Bottle - Dark chocolate and roasted malts. Jet black with a brown thick head. Dark chocolate, roast malts and a boozy finish with a bit of bitterness. OK.
3.4 Aroma - is malty with a little coffee, nuttiness, roast, and alcohol Appearance - is a dark color, black really. The initial head set-up is a nice frothy brown head. As it settles the head is a halo and tan. Taste - the taste is semi-sweet, a dark baking chocolate taste. Palate - the body is full, the feel is creamy, slick and sticky, the carbonation soft, and the finish long and warming. This is a nice brew. My 1st Nevada brew!
3.8 Glassy black with an espresso head.Aroma is tootsie rolls and coffee with raisin. Taste is the same, with an emphasis on the cocoa notes. Rich, and not very boozy. $5/22oz
3.0 Bottle from Total Wine in Boca Raton, FL. Snifter at home. Pours a deep bodied black with an oily topper. Thin head was gone quickly. No real lacing. Aroma was nice with dark chocolate, roasted malts, booze, wood. The taste was not near as impressive. Kind of fell flat with not much in the chocolate and malts. Just was kind of there with some booze and oak. Overall the it was rather flavorless. Full body, little carbonation. Finish was kind of bitter and uneventful.
2.1 From the 12 fl. oz. bottle. It looks and smells nice but tastes terrible. I usually find the good in everything but that’s my overall verdict. Nice dark brown to black pour with a long lasting head. Aroma of chocolate malts mostly. Light to medium body. But the taste is well below average. Vinegar is all I get. No chocolate like I get on the nose. No sweetness. Just vinegar. I may have gotten a bad bottle but I can’t see myself ever drinking this one again.
3.0 Bottle thanks to somebody, rating from my backlog. The smell is wood, malts, roast, cardboard. The look is brown to back in color with a beige colored head. The taste is malts, light malts, cardboard.
3.4 Poured from 1pint (6fl oz) bottle. Black with dissipating brown head. Very strong chocolate aroma and especially dark chocolate flavour. Mild coffee notes. Milky texture. Very intense chocolate - save for dessert.
2.1 smells of alcohol and ashtrays. looks typical for style. immediate alcohol burn on tasting, followed by a bit of dry dark grains. pretty one dimensional and bad.
4.7 12floz/355ml bottle into a tulip glass; served cool. Aroma: Daaaaaaaaamn that is boozy. It smells like someone basically poured the darkest chocolate you have ever had into a glass. Chocolate and booze. I can get behind that. Appearance: Let me just say that this is the blackest beer I have ever poured. It looks like ink coming out of the bottle. Minimal dark brown head that dissipates into nothing. Blackest black black I have ever black. Taste: Wow, once again, straight chocolate. This one doesn’t mess around. Chocolate on top of chocolate. A little smoke, but it’s chocolate smoke. Red Fox you so crazy. Palate: Silky smooth with a full body and a long long bittersweet finish. Overall: If you’re looking for a lot of diversity in the flavor profile, Red Fox isn’t for you. If you’re looking for a sexy, chocolate filled stout, look no further. I love you, Red Fox.
3.0 Black pour, tan head, some lace/retention. Aroma is roast, chocolate, caramel, moderate bitterness. Medium to full bodied, sticky, sweet.
3.5 22 oz. bottle shared by dudeabide. Pours dark brown to black in color with a small beige ring. The aroma and flavor have roasted malts, chocolate, dark fruits, a mild spicy quality and some black coffee. Pretty straight forward RIS. A touch thin on the body.
