3.7Bottle. Sometimes, it’s where you have a beer that matters. I’m sitting in the Walburg Biergarten in Walburg, TX, as the sun goes down after a hundred degree day, listening to Tex-Deutsch country music and enjoying this beer. And it’s pretty damned good.
3.9Originally rated on 9/5/08. Drank this one with the Weihenstephaner yesterday and have to say i prefered the Echter. It pours a deep murky brown body, some yeast flake floaters were present. Nice light brown head. Mouthfeel was creamy and smooth. Flavors evolved as it warmed but banana, clove, roasted nuts and sweet malts blended well together. A pretty good beer that i would purchase again.
3.2500 ml bottle with a BB date stamp of Feb. 2016 poured into a lager glass.
A - Pours cloudy, very dark mahogany in color, with a generous and persistent tan head.
Aroma: Sweet aroma of banana, dark bread and light spices.
Flavor - mild, with banana, wheat, sweet caramel malt, light clove. About equally bitter and sweet.
Feel - lively high carbonation seems too high. Light body.
Overall: lively and refreshing.
3.8Dark burnt Carmel color with thick white head. Spiced banana bread, hint of coriander, possible smoke on the nossle. Pallet replicates it nose with a smidgen of sour on the finish. Light to medium body with a dry finish.
3.6Bottle. Pours a murky brown with big head that lingers. The flavor is almost like a Belgian beer with lots of clove and banana. It has a mildly sour aftertaste that dissipates quickly. Pretty good overall.
3.6Julius Echter Hefe-Weiss Dunkel has a very thick, mauve head, an initially clear, fiercely-bubbly, rust-brown appearance, and heavy lacing globs left on the glass. The beer clouds up, once the caked sediment is swished loose and poured in. The aroma is of spiced bread, prunes, banana, and banana cream pie. Taste is of those elements, with no bitterness factor, but some acidity showing up. Mouthfeel is light to medium, and Julius Echter Hefe-Weiss Dunkel finishes drinkable and on the dry side. RJT
4.3Banana and spice aroma. A beer bottle brown colored body. Wit a mild tan head that lingers a long time. Taste has a mix of banana, yeast and sweet malt. Refreshing. This is a winner.
4.0Full amber body with a poofy, overflowing, off-white head. Liquid bread aroma, enticing German yeastiness with feintness of bananas and even more subtle clove, accenting the multi-grain backbone with a splendid aromatic complexity. Likewise, the first sip is a delicious, filling, and fulfilling one of liquid bread. Complex, multi-grain flavor with some caramel, wheat, and Pilsen malts. Touches of banana and clove, and eventually, even some chocolate. All wrapped together with a perfect wheaty tartness on the finish. Thick, complex and substantive from the first to last sip
3.5Bottle from Spec’s - Memorial in Houston, TX. Cloudy brown-amber pour with a cream-white head. Aroma of overripe banana, wheat, mild light fruit. Medium palate. Pretty darn good.
4.1Look - Thick head if poured aggressively. Thick bubbles and not retained. Dirty ivory as opposed to tan. The color is unique. It is lighter than a brown ale. It had a red tint too.
Smell - Malt. Brown sugar. Wheat/grass. Sour. Faint chocolate.
Taste - Malt. Sour. Sweet and sour. I am not sure where the alcohol is.
Feel - Very carbonated in the throat. Creamy until swallowed. Heavier than other wheat beers.
Overall - This is one of the first dark beers I liked. It pulled me away from wheats and in to stouts. I really like this beer.
3.8Bottle. Fairly clear reddish brown with a thick off white head. Pleasant ripe banana and burnt sugars, perhaps a bit sweet but I really like the caramel in this one. Makes me realize that I haven’t had a really good dunkelweizen in quite a while, very satisfying.
4.0New to this style, I really enjoy wiezenbock so had to try. Deep amber/light-brown pour with off-white sticky head - looks great! Aroma of ripened fruit, yeast, and some wheaty malt. Flavors are mostly the same - not a bad thing - with a touch of sweetness. Finish is a bit dry as the flavor quickly fades.
2.9Another old bottle that just showed up at one of my local liquor stores. Sigh. I should’ve checked the bottle dates before purchasing. Best by 2012! Ouch. It pours a very dark amber red color with a nice khaki head. The aroma has some light cherry cola, wheat and stale bread. A little cider. The flavor is a little better with some rich bread, bread crust, mild watery cola, and some light plum notes. Not as bad as the old Hefeweizen I had from them. It’s too bad they let this stuff out into market so old.
2.1Pours dark amber color with medium white head. Nose is rosted malts. Aromas are roasted malts, chocolate and ashes. Light body, medium cabronation. Short roasty and sweet finish. Quite watery.
3.3500 ml bottle. Unclear dark amber body with a medium sized off-white head. Aroma of dark, light roasted malt, some caramel, fruit and banana. Flavor is sweet caramel malt, mild roasted, yeast, banana and some clove. Medium body and average aftertaste. Nice and refreshing, even on the sweeter side.
3.4Bottle pours a dark clear Amber/brown with s large beige head. Aroma of caramel malt, slightly cidery, light banana and clove, with wheat. Taste similar to aroma, light well balanced flavors. Not bad.
3.5500 ml bottle at home from notes. Pours a hazy amber brown color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have mild roast, banana, cloves, chocolate, caramel, mild citrus notes with a hint of apple, decent enough for what it is.
3.8Julius Echter Hefe-Weissbier Dunkel is not enough of a Hefe or Dunkel to make it interesting. Nice yeast aroma coming off this dark pour with a nice thick head. Taste has a nice yeast character but none of the notes you might be looking for in a Hefe. No dark beer notes either. Still, a decent brew especially with a meal.
3.5Bottle: The aroma consists of light-moderate chocolate, light banana, roasted grains, and a hint of apple. It pours hazy/cloudy brown with an orange glow around the edges of the glass. It has a large khaki head with good retention before eventually fading to a thick film. There are some thick soapy rings left on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with some light caramel and chocolate. There is some light banana in the middle along with a touch of apple. The finish has light roasted grains with a hint of nuts. It’s medium bodied with moderate carbonation.
4.0Pours a dark amber color with a lot of carbonation. There is a white fizzy head that is lasting and left lots of lacing. The aroma is sweet and earthy. Taste is sweet malts, caramel, very minimal bitterness. This beer is definitely worth a try.
4.0Dark orange in the light, maple leaf brown in the dark. Tons of carbonation; a still, unwavering head at the top.
The aroma is candi sugars; a tart yeast component. No banana, but some juicy citruses, like orange rind and tangerine. Homemade bread in the upper nasal cavity. Hint of sugary bubblegum. A definite cellar funk. A handful of purple concord grapes.
Flavor is earthy yeast, with more pink bubblegum. A tart stone fruit on the back of the tongue: a plum, methinks. Slight cherry cough drop. Slight grassy complexion, but quickly gives way to a darker berry.
Feels bubbly and thick and effervescent. This is a wonderful gateway beer, especially for a red wine drinker. It’s very pleasant, and not incredibly challenging. The yeast-tart balance is like a slow-dance.
3.0Bottle at home. Pours hazy brown with big fizzy head and decent lacing. Nose is Very light malt and caramel. Tastes of wheat, caramel, molasses, light banana, and a stale bread. Thin palate. But overall it approves with warming.
3.7Very good beer. Nice full head taste is sweet and wheaty. A slight watery flavor, but still a great beer.
3.8Rated based on notes taken 20 Dec 2011 -- This is a very good Dunkel. In my opinion a classic and perfect example of the style. Would drink over and over again.
3.2Cloudy dark brown pour. Some mash malt. Light hint of citrus. Easy drinking but not very exciting. Light sour finish. Bottle from grape and gourmet.
3.3Dark brown in color thin tan head. Easy drinking dunkel. This was the quintessential Dunkel.
3.9Very nice smell but wish it was more prominent, good flavor lots of malt low hops.....
3.9Bottle at Laura’s brothers’ place with James. Pours cloudy orange with white head. Aroma is sweet wheat, smooth. Taste is smooth creamy wheat super drinkable but a little sweet.
3.9From bottle: Pours a caramel brown color with a small off white head. Smells of wheat, banana, clove, yeast and dark malts. Tastes of Wheat and dark malts with a hint of clove and banana. The malts taste of caramel and raisins. Highly carbontated mouthfeel. Easy to drink
