JW Dundees American Amber Lager

JW Dundees American Amber Lager

JW Dundee’s American Amber Lager has a complex malt character that is masterfully balanced by a distinct American Hop aroma and flavor. We use 5 different malts to create the complex malt flavor in this beer. We start with our 2 Row Pale Malt as our base and then add 4 different types of Crystal Malts. It is the combination of the four Crystal malts that define the complexity of the beer. Although the malt is showcased in this beer, the hops play an important part in the balance of flavors. We use Simcoe, Cascade, and Magnum hops to create the hop profile that balances the complex malt character. This balance creates a beer that has great depth of flavor while still being very drinkable. JW Dundee’s Amber Lager is flavorful enough to satisfy craft beer drinkers yet is still accessible to those looking to find a beer with a little more character than their normal beer.

3.0 Pours a (surprise) amber colors with minimal head and retention. Smell is of malt and very little else. Taste is very one-dimensional. That being said, the malty taste that this brew lends itself to is pleasant and makes it very drinkable. This does not taste like an amber, however. There is no hop character whatsoever. It actually tastes very much like their honey brown. Again, it would be very easy to put a few of these down, though I don’t really see myself buying any more of these if there is something else around. Reviewed on: 09-15-2007
3.2 Bottle: Amber colored pour with little to no head. Sweet, spicy, malty aroma. Crisp, light malts, hoppy finish. I liked this.
2.1 Bottle with - and courtesy of - yalnikim, a clear amber with the glass, with a thick off-white head. A doughy malt aroma. Standard ’mass’ amber lager flavour, sweetish malt and slightly metallic, with a thin mouthfeel. Unoffensive, would be popular with kiwi blokes who like their Lion Red, etc.
3.1 Tasted 16/09/2008. 12oz bottle. Huge biscuit dough malt aroma, very German, reminiscent of Sam Adams. Medium sweetness. Slightly grassy, herbal hop note with a little metallic twist in the finish. Certainly drinkable but not eaxactly "refined".
2.8 Brown bottle, 355 ml, savoured on August 20 2008; eye: copper, clear, slight effervescence, tan head that falls and turns into a tiny ring; nose: malt, caramel, light hops; mouth: thin, caramelized malt, caramel, caramel again, light hops, finale in caramelized malt with a presence of hops, light astringency, mildly sweet, medium-light body, average carbonation; overall: ordinary FRANÇAIS Bouteille brune, 355 ml, savourée le 20 août 2008; œil : cuivrée, claire, très légère effervescence, mousse fauve qui tombe et se transforme en un petit anneau, pas de dentelle; nez : malt, caramel, léger houblon; bouche : mince, malt caramélisé, caramel, encore du caramel, léger houblon, finale en malt caramélisé avec une présence de houblon, légère astringence, légèrement sucrée, corps moyen-léger, carbonatation moyenne; en résumé : ordinaire
3.1 Sampled from bottle, pours a clear copper colour with a fairly large white head. Aroma is malty, caramel, tofee and raisins. Taste is relatively clean, crisp with a soft hop finish.
2.3 scent of honey and carmel. it tastes of carmel and some roast. finish is a little sweet.
2.7 Pour is light amber with small tan head. Aroma is strong of caramel and malt. Flavor is also full of caramel. Very smooth palate with a nice crisp finish. Not as bad as I thought it would be.
3.1 bottle, brown amber color, head fades fairly quickly, malty nose, flavors of malty caramel, medium smooth finsh of brown sugar
2.4 Bottle Janie 08’. Rather boring. Hops are present in the mid palette but don’t do much. Sweet and smooth in the finish.
2.8 JW Dundee’s American Amber Lager is a clear and sparkling, well, amber lager. The head is thin and white and leaves nice lacing on the glass. The appearance is really the best part of this beer, so look well. The aroma is sweet and malty, maybe caramel, with a hint of grassy hops. It’s pretty light bodied and watery. It’s prickly, with a gritty finish. It tastes pretty sweet, again, like caramel. There is a hint of bitterness at the finish and the aftertaste is clean. It almost seems as if it wasn’t completely fermented, but I’ve certainly had worse.
2.1 Huge tan head atop a copper penny colored brew, lots of fine carbonation. Aroma is grainy with corn strong in the forefront. Very fizzy carbonated feel like a hops soda.
1.5 Weird metallic malt flavors and a bit of hops do not a good beer make. Maybe for a barbecue, but not for anything where you’re paying attention to the beer.
2.6 bottle, bought in japan. copperish colour with a light white head. aroma of caramel and aluminium, some light toffee character overwhelmed by tinny bitterness
3.2 Appearance: Pours a crystal clear, golden-mahogany body with a small, fizzy, white head. Smell: Toasty malts with a slight hint of toasted almond slivers. Very soft floral notes. Taste: Toasty malts, a slight nuttiness, and a medium dark caramel sweetness. Faintest hint of floral and citrus. Rather subdued hop bitterness. Crisp, dry finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. Medium, fizzy carbonation. Drinkability: A thin, simply dark lager that’s only real goal is to be crisp and refreshing. I’m fine with that.
2.7 Bottle from Sondra. Amber color with a frothy beige head. Malty aroma. A bit watery with moderate carbonation. Flavor is malty, and there’s some bitter. It’s really rather drinkable, considering it’s bottom fermented. AB take note. A lager can have flavor, even if it’s made in America.
3.0 From a JW Dundees Sampler Case. Pretty good offer from Dundee. It is nicley smooth with light hops. Really good color. Very highly drinkable.
2.5 Really middle of the road offer from Dundee. It is fairly smooth with light flavor. Not much body. Really nice color. Finishes fairly well, and drinkable though not memorable.
2.5 a good beer for this style. above average...but not much. the head fades too quickly but theres something both great and kinda strange about the aroma it tastes like amberbock with a little more complexity. try it if you like this style.
2.7 Bronze copper body with constant effervescence in a lager glass--thick, half-inch head appears tasty... medium-bodied malts with a friendly, yeasty accent--appealing--and yet a hint of corn also... nondescript, thin bodied palate--settles on the tongue, but is fleeting like iced tea...tin, metallic malts--a Natural Light tinge with a little more body.. warms as the glass continues... a bit sweet with a somewhat grainy, yeasty finish...again, nondescript--serviceable and probably a safe companion to pizza or nachoes...
3.7 Presentation: Poured from a 12oz bottle into a pint glass. It has a deep amber color with excellent clarity. The head is full and fluffy with a creamy off white color. It hangs on for a short time and recedes to a thin covering. On the way down the glass it leaves behind some nice lacing. The aroma is light and clean. There is a light malt presence with soft aromatic hops in the nose. Nothing out of this world but it is fresh, crisp and clean. There is a pleasant sweet malt base with a mild hop presence within a medium body that has a refreshing texture and clean finish. Simple and good but great. It comes with a modest price tag that will bring me back for more.
2.9 12oz bottle-pours a rich off white head and amber/copper color. Aroma is medium malt, tea-herbal, some spice. Taste is medium malt-caramel, tea-herbal, some spice hops. Some metallic tannins distract from beer that seems to be a cross of an Irish/American amber. Soft carbonation.
3.1 Amber color (surprise); small, white, frothy head that stays and leaves lots of lacing. Aroma very bready with hops and orange; light caramel. Flavor also bready with a hint of citrus; sweet; surprisingly bitter finish, almost wheaty and just a tiny touch metallic. Medium sticky; medium-light body. Pleasant surprise.
3.2 Crystal clear amber with good off-white head. Malty aroma and a nutty, bready flavor. Slightly bitter finish. Good amber
1.7 12 oz. bottle poured into shaker- poured transparent light amber brownish color, aroma of slightly roasted malt and some floral notes. White head came and went, no lacing, medium carbonation. HIts the mouth with a defined high-thin body, the malt has an almost dull sweetness, finish has a slight bitterness to it. A dust like quality gets left on your teeth after the swallow, and that’s just bad for me (poor and/or careless brewing?). 2 bad ones in a row- dang!!!
2.8 Pours a transparent reddish brown with a very small head. Aroma of malt and not much else. Flavor is sweet malt, caramel, a touch of hops. My 2nd favorite Dundees beer behind honey brown.
2.5 BOTTLE: Craft Pack sampler. Not the best beer in this sampler, but not bad at all. At $4 a case less than Saranac, that’s quite a compliment. Malty aroma and taste is somewhat doughy, but grows on you. Almost medium body a bit creamy and not-too-agressive carbonation make it a pleasant drinker. Not much of a finish to speak of. BUY AGAIN? Sure. This whole Sampler pack is an exceptional value in almost-craft beers.
2.0 Pours copper with a 1/2 inch head lasting all of 60 seconds. Smells like nut and malt. Tastes malty, and metallic. Finishes a little heavy. Not my favorite nutty brown american brown-like lager.
2.7 Lightly roasted malt aroma. Dark amber clear pour, with a thin yellow head, good lace. Metallic sour malt. Grain on the palate. Too sour for the style, but I don’t mind it. Not very balanced, but not a bad every day beer, especially in the spring.
2.0 ...not that great, but better than bud or something like that. Decent mouthfeel, hints of hops and malt give it some flavor. Slightly light, yet a bit creamy, not too bad.
