3.7 33 cl bottle @ home, served in a teku glass. Due date: 06/10/2019. Aroma: not very intense aromas of floral and grassy hops with hints of spices, herbs, pine, pine needles, alcohol. Appearance: very dark brown color, almost black, with beige to light brown foam made of tiny bubbles. Extremely high head thickness with very high retention. Very fluffy foam. Medium to high Brussels' lacing. Too dark to see its haziness. Taste: low sweetness, medium bitterness, low to medium sourness. Very intense flavors of roasted malts, toasted malts, black coffee, black chocolate, cocoa. Hints of floral, grassy and spicy hops, citrus, pine. Balance is toward the hoppy and bitter side, but it's quite pleasant and not harsh and well balanced by the malts' sweetness and the its acidity. Acidity from black malts and rye is quite noticeable. Palate: medium body, very oily texture, low to medium carbonation, very long dry finish with medium bitterness and low to medium acidity and the same aforementioned flavors. Alcohol is very slightly noticeable in the aroma. Low astringency. Overall: very good appearance. Good aromas and very good flavors of roasted malts, black coffee, black chocolate, cocoa. It would be better with less acidity from the rye and the black malts. The mouthfeel is very oily/silky and very good. Flavors are very good too. Quite shocking to find this very intense roasted flavors in a Black IPA. More close to a good Porter than to a Black IPA.
3.7 Ik ben geen ipaliefhebber, maar het bier is goed gebrouwen. Chocolade en karamel en wat mokka in aroma en smaak. Mooie schuimkop.
3.7 33cl bottle at FOB, Rimini, Italy. Pours black with a nice fluffy foam, brownish and fine. Aroma is coffee/roasted and herbaceous. Body is fairly dense with average carbonation. Taste is moderately in sweetness and with noticeable bitterness, also from the rye. Finish is long and roasted.
3.8 Hoppy, citrus aroma that you expect from an IPA but a strong roasted flavour, notes of chocolate and a black coffee bitterness followed by a citrus bitter finish. Light bodied but complex, deep flavours.
4.0 Fles 33cl thuis. Rogge, chocola, roasted malts, koffie, caramel, flink bitter, stoutachtig, veel koolzuur. (12-2014).
2.8 Ziet er prima uit, maar valt verder tegen in geur en smaak. Jammer afsluiting...
3.5 330ml bottle bought at Vinmonopolet Langnes. Dense, tan-coloured head leaving lacing rings down the glass. Jet black in the glass. Rather restrained aroma of liquorice and bread, roasted. Mixed taste of grainy chocolate, liquorice, pine, and dark bread followed by roasted malt bitter ending. Well bodied. Nice. (Tromsø 09.04.2018)
3.5 0.33l bottle. Malty and hopy aroma, cofee, roasted mals. Black color, beige head. Malty and hopy taste, chocolate, coffee, medium bitter. Medium body, slick texture, soft carbonation and malty bitter finish with coffee notes. Good.
3.9 Zapach: kawa, torf, cytrusy, Wygląd: czarne, piana beżowa, wysoka, zdobi szkło. Smak: kawa, gorzka czekolada, goryczka średnia, wyraźna.
4.5 Pitchblack with a neat foamhead. Smell of roasted malts and hoppy aroma's. Flavors are well balanced, roasted coffee tones and fruitiness of hops, berries and citrus. This may be the best Black IPA I had!.
3.9 Can't believe I haven't had this one. Anyway. Bottle @ home. Black colour with a small beige head. Smells roasty, hops, chocolate, hint of liquorice. Tastes roasty, happy, bitter, chocolate bitterness, some dark chocolate. It's not a black ipa where either the roastyness or the hops is too extreme, but they've found a nice balance. That does make it a nice black ipa but it also makes the beer a bit forgettable. Medium body, nice carbo. A good beer without any big flaws.
3.3 @ Amsterdam 17-11-27 (backlog rating): Ganska ordinär black ipa med toner av lakrits, humle och lite frukt
3.8 What a great beer made in my place of birth! Its a IPA mixed with some dark tones; the roast chocolate is the kick that makes this beer so special!
3.2 Bottle from 100 piv. Vona citrusova. Farba silno cierna. Chut vyrazne kavova.
3.5 Bottle from Bierkoning. Black with a medium tan head. Aroma and taste of dark malt, licorice, hops, some grapefruit and chocolate. The body was medium as was the bitterness. A decent one.
4.0 Tap at the source. Pours pitch black with some thick brown foam on top. Looking neat. Aroma is roasty but balance between hops and the roast character is very well taken. Juicy, lots of black berries in the taste, some chocolate and roast, still easily drinkable. Very enjoyable, could be one of the best Black IPA's I have tried.
4.0 Taster on tap @ Kaapse Brouwers Rotterdam. Belle robe foncée. Bière très consistante avec arômes de malts torréfiés. Seigle donne beaucoup de corps et de goût.
3.8 0.33 l bottle @home. Pours pitch black with thick, everlasting beige head. Nose is chocolate, cocoa, slight coffee and some roasted notes. Taste is cocoa, chocolate, moderate fruits, followed by hoppy bitterness that is mainly present in the finish, which lasts long. Light body, creamy texture and moderate to average carbo. More pronounced hops presence wouldn't have hurt, but a decent brew nevertheless.
4.0 Optisch klar der creamy Impy-Lookalike. In der Nase harziger Röster, am Gaumen säuerlich spritziger Passionfruiter mit ner ganz netten Bittere, die auch schön lang haftet. Also vieles richtig gemacht. Gut süffig, könnte man sagen ;). Aus dem De Molen Shop in Holland. 0,33l Bottle.
3.2 Flaske fra Vinmonopolet Tromsø - Langnes. Svart. Kjempehøyt mokkafarget skum som daler veldig sakte. Spotlacing. Bra aroma av bær & trær. Smaken litt tynn. Mest svisker. Lett tørr ettersmak.
4.0 Sehr leckerer, schokoladiger Geruch. Geschmack zunächst auch schokoladig, aber auch nach Aschenbecher. Sehr starke Karbonisierung.
3.6 Sehr schwarz, schaumig. Geruch nach Trockenobst und Rosinen. Im Geschmack sehr trocken, dann sofort sehr bitter. Riecht sehr gut, im Geschmack dann irgendwie leer.
3.6 Very good black IPA, in fact one of the best ones I've ever tasted, not as harsh and bitter as most, but more subtle and smooth. Kaapse is a truely good brewery and here they prove it again.
3.7 Draught at GBBF 2017, Olympia, London, Aug 2017 - Opaque black in colour. Good creamy beige head. Malty; roasty malts, dark chocolate, liquorice, caramel. Fruity; grapefruit citrus. Hoppy; good hop bitterness, piney hops. Bitter roast malty citrus fruity throughout. Good balance. Liked this. Good stuff. Not extreme; a very drinkable BIPA. (2017-08)
3.5 Om tap at GBBF 2017. Black beer lasting tan head. Dark chocolate aroma.some decent hop one of the better black ipas good solid malt. Rather than empty charcoal. More a hoppy stout
3.4 Bottle from the Rice Boat, Cambridge. Dark brown, slightly translucent, with a foamy khaki head. Low aroma, but what I do detect is enticing: chocolate, sarsaparilla, liquorice, a touch of yeast extract. The pungent, grainy rye is prominent as well. And it’s even more prominent in the sweet, spicy initial taste. Hoppy bitterness takes over in the latter part of the sip, through to the long finish with salt liquorice and bitter chocolate in the aftertaste. It’s a really good beer, although maybe the prominence of the rye is slight overkill in an already flavourful style.
3.6 Bottle from Brewcraft. Pours a dark opaque cola colour with a very fluffy beige head that dissipates somewhat into a fizzy foam. Smells of pale toasted cereals, dried fruit, dark roasty/burnt malt, moderate sweetness, apple skin and fig, strong esters of paint thinner (not in a bad way) and faint banana, bit of raisin/banana bread ans biscuit, spice, dark chocolate, burnt coffee bitterness. Taste has dark burnt malt, mineral porter bitterness. Taste has more straight-up dark malt than the nose, which has dark as well as pale toasted malt. Body is toasty, fluffy with a burnt/stony bitterness, somewhat watery. On the thin side. IPA characteristics are not too evident - this is deeply bitter, but in a burnt coffee/dark malt way. The dark malt, fruit, esters and spice in the nose are nice though. Enjoyable but not so good that I’d need to get it again.
3.1 Bottle from Brewcraft at home. Dull opaque dark brown pour - sort of hazy. Super fizzy light tan head. Aroma is dark chocolate and earthy/fruity hops. Like a cake with dried fruit or something. Interesting but not my favorite. Taste is very bitter coffee and grass, with burnt coffee malt after. Very bubbly palate, which I don’t really like. Not bad but pretty muddled. Wouldn’t get again.
3.5 #1350 Bottle. Red to black body with small beige hear. Amazing aroma of pralines, dark chocolate, citruses, licorice, plums in liqueur, roasted malts. Taste is prominently dry, moderately bitter. Strongly roasted, dark caramel, chocolate, touch of zest. Medium body, high carbonation, a bit sticky texture. Good one, but a bit unbalanced, harsh.
3.5 Bottle 0.33l. Very dark red to brown colored. AROMA- very pleasant, citrusy, chocolate, roasted malts. FLAVOR- dry, bitter, hoppy, chocolate, dark caramel. Medium bodied. Good.
