Karl Strauss Tower 10 IPA

Karl Strauss Tower 10 IPA

Mission Beach, the late 1980s. Amid a sea of neon bikinis, Tower 10 marked the spot where two college grads and a 75 year-old master brewer drew up plans for the first local craft brewery in San Diego since Prohibition. Named in honor of our first good idea, Tower 10 IPA is brewed to inspire the next one.

Tower 10 IPA boasts hops from beginning to end, and everywhere in between. We fill the brew kettle to the brim with assertive Chinook hops, giving the beer its intense grapefruit and pine flavors that linger through its dry finish. After fermentation, we dry hop with a blend of Cascade and Centennial hops for a floral citrus aroma. A touch of lightly kilned caramel malts make Tower 10 a well balanced, full flavor IPA.

3.1 Taster Brewpub. Pours crystal clear gold, lacy head. almost no aroma, soft biscuity malt. Very dry taste. It's more decently hopped lager hand Ipa.
3.4 330ml bottle (thanks FatPhil). Deep amber color. Medium size, frothy white head, stays. Sweet, caramel, bit of alcohol, malty and bready in aroma. Sweet, malty, caramel in taste. Sweet and caramel malts in aftertaste. Sweet and malty mouthfeel. Solid brew.
3.3 Bottle (thanks fatphil). Pours hazy amber. Aroma is hoppy, citrus, pine. Flavor is sweet and bitter, pine, caramel. Finish is resin bitter. Overall: ok.
3.2 355ml bottle (browarium.pl) (6:4:6:3:13=3.2) Sweet caramelly malty aroma. Orange, tight head. Sweet body, slickish, but crisp tingly carbonation. Crazily sweet malty body. Some bitter hops. Finish does have quite a tingle. Alcohol covered by the sugars, but this is dominated by diabetic shock.
3.5 Draught at Karl Strauss, Carlsbad. Clear amber colored with notes small white head. Fruity aroma of hops, resin and pine needles. Fruity flavor of hops, resin and pine needles. Hoppy finish.
3.4 Duft svag frugt mere maltet citrus pariferet smag malt sød oats bitter eftersmag frugt kant
3.9 A pretty good ipa. A fair amount of grapefruit in the flavor. The body is a little thin at times but it’s solid.
3.3 (Tap) clear, bright fluorescent orange colour with a small white head; aroma of dankness, lemon; dry flavour with a long, medium bitter finish
3.3 Bottle in Tokyo. Pours a clear orange color with a medium white head. A light fruity nose. Toast, oranges, light bitterness. OK.
3.4 330ml bottle. Pours a pale orange gold with a thin white head. Aroma: pine, grapefruit and citrus aromas dominate. Mild malt notes. Taste: pine, citrus, grapefruit flavours. Mild caramel malts balance out the hops. Moderate to high bitterness that lingers. Low carbonation. Quite a decent IPA and easy to drink but the flavour balance is by no means complex. It is a good standard IPA for someone new to IPAs but the flavour gets a bit boring after a while.
2.5 Aroma: resin, grapefruit, herbs ; Taste: very high bitterness, low sweetness ; Palate: medium body, long bitter finish ; Too much bitterness, and for what?
3.5 On tap at Karl Strauss in Costa Mesa. Pours a cloud gold and makes a one finger head with some lacing down the glass. Aroma is a light hoppy, pine resiny smell. Tastes of fresh hops and quite effervescent.
3.8 Resinous hops and citrus flavours combined very effectively to create a proper West Coast Pale Ale (in my opinion)
1.3 West coast ipa de 7 % abv (pour 16° plato) et 60 ebu. Malt cara.
3.4 On tap at Karl Strauss, pours a clear blonde with a small white head. Aroma brings out herbal and citrus hops upfront, followed by toasted malt. Flavour is along the same lines, with citrus and herbal hops upfront, backed by toasted biscuity malt. Nicely constructed, lean and dry finish. Good stuff.
3.4 On tap at the brewery. Pours a clear orange gold with small white head that lasts. The aroma is grass and grapefruit. Medium body, grapefruit pith, dank, resin finish, good.
3.7 Pours a clear golden orange on tap with fluffy off-white head that leaves moderate lace. Aroma of mild piney new world hop notes and minimal bready malts. Taste is more balanced, hints of garlic herbaceous notes and a but of caramel. Solid, standard IPA, a decent beer.
4.0 From Zombier. In Teku glass. After dinner. Lots of grapefruit here with a good bitter bite too. Reminds me some belgian ipas but more refreshing, clean, bitter and pleasant
3.4 Tower 10 IPA is one of those ales where the stated 60 IBU’s can seem a little misleading. While there is undoubtedly a fair amount of hop representation from the Pacific Northwest, this beer tastes maltier thanks to good dose of rich caramel flavor. The American hops do come through well with their usual traits of pine and grapefruit. This was one of the most predictable of the Karl Strauss brews I enjoyed, yet it still works as a tribute to a time when Western American IPA’s were less aggressive.
3.7 On tap at Disneyland pours out a crisp golden topped with a sand head. Nose is pine a light tropical fruit hop and some bread malts. Taste is more of the nice tropical fruits hops and a mellow malt.
3.2 Light amber colour and light fruit aroma. Some subtle fruit / hops. Light at the front through to medium body and malts. Well balanced malt profile. Low hop for IPA. Doesn’t feel like a 7%ABV, maybe more EPA?
3.8 12fl oz bottle at home from FirmaBier. Nose is fruity malty, light citric. Body is opalescent orange, head is big, white, rocky, mostly lasting, good lacing. Aroma is tropical fruits, honey, apple, biscuits, peach, waffle. Medium sweet, light bitter, light fruity sour. Finish is long lasting hoppy medium to heavy bitter. Medium body, slick texture, soft carbonation. Easy, quite refreshing, rich flavor, interesting, nice one.
3.8 Bottle from Thirsty Craft Beer Shop in Singapore. Hazy orange with a large white head. Aroma of hops, citrus, some caramel and passion fruit. Similar taste. Also some biscuits and light malt. The body was medium and the finish quite bitter.
3.7 12 oz bottle pours clear orange and gold with a white head. Citrus hop aroma. Taste is balanced bitterness with citrus, pine and fruity qualities. Solid ipa.
3.2 [backlog] 08-08-15 // bottle at home. Light orange, hazy, white head. Hoppy nose. Malty start. Then tropical fruit, pine. Medium bitter finish. Medium sweet.
3.0 12oz bottle - pours a clear golden yellow with a tinge of orange and a med off white head. Good aroma of pine and tropical hops, caramel malts and some bitter herbs. Tastes more like an English IPA with more malt content and less hop punch.
3.3 Bottle. Orange in colour with medium white head. Arom aof mango and peach with solid malty backbone. In taste biscuits with oranges and some grassy notes. Medium body, moderate carbonation, bitter grassy finish.
3.8 Bottle @ cafe Frape, Maastricht. Cloudy light golden, white foamy head that leaves a nice lacing. Light citrus, spruce, resin, grassy hop profile, grainy and sweet malty base, medium dry and bitter finish. Firm body, low-medium carbonation.
