Kettle House Cold Smoke Scotch Ale

Kettle House Cold Smoke Scotch Ale

Cold Smoke Scotch Ale earned a silver medal in 2002 and a gold medal in the 2007 NABA brewfest. Formulated with Montana grown 2-row barley, northwest Goldings hops, and lotsa love, this hearty ale drinks very smooth. Not bitter at all and not too sweet either. Novice beer drinkers have been known to take a taste and then say, “WOW! That’s not what I expected… that’s GOOD!” A hint of roasted barley lends a slight coffee-like smoky finish. It packs a 6.5% abv punch. Perfect after a day of rippin’ lines on area or your favorite back country getaway. Available in 16 oz aluminum cans. 6.5 % abv (alcohol by volume); 11 IBUs (International Bittering Units)

3.4 On tap at the Slippery otter pub in West Yellowstone. Brown amber color. Tan medium bubble foam. Lightly caramel sweetness. Hint of smoke. Pretty good.
3.0 A little bland in the can. Decent on tap though.
5.0 I have tasted a lot of dark beer and so far Cold Smoke has won my heart. Speaking has a former bartender and now a owner of a B&B I am open to comparisons. Since Cold Smoke does not have wide distribution and production capabilities, it is hard to find outside Montana. Most of the people I have introduced to Cold Smoke have become true believers in the product. I will admit a few dark brews have come close but most are weak, too strong, bitter or to much Chocolate.
3.8 Draft at the Buffalo Bar, West Yellowstone. Pleasant drinkable dark Scottish ale with malt and caramel
3.2 Draft. Mahogany beer with a dark cream head. Smoke and caramel aroma. Smoke and caramel flavor. Medium bodied. Smoke and caramel linger.
3.4 16 ounce can at the house I picked up at store on vacation. Smell sweet malt with dark brown color. Taste the malt, not heavy on the Scottish taste. Mild. Smooth on the palate. Slight woody after taste. Above average for the style and very easy to drink. Cheers!
3.3 16oz can. Pours clear dark brown. Aroma of peat, roaste. Flavor of peat, molasses, brown sugar.
2.9 16 oz beer from grocery store in Bozeman MT. Cola and raspberry notes. A little tame considering.
3.6 16 oz can poured, gifted by Marissa. Thanks! Fun to try a beer from your hometown. A dark but mostly clean copper pour. Toasty aroma, caramel malts. Gentle and easy drinking flavor in this scotch ale. Soft roast, rich caramel. An obvious sweetness going on here, but it's not too much for me. Good beer here overall.
3.7 16oz can thanks to Rick. Pours out cola brown color topped with a sand head. Nose is a touch of smoke rich malts some roast. Tatse is more of the nice sweet malts caramel toffee malts a little smoke and pit fruit sweetness.
3.7 Can received from Kevin. Pours clear dark brown with medium, frothy beige head, short retention. Moderate caramel, nutty and rich toasty malt, smoked wood notes, rich dark fruit, mild hop bitterness and a sweet finish. Full body and medium carbonation.
3.9 Draft. Aroma of plum and dried stone fruit. Thick lace. Flavors are complex: dried apricots, tobacco, earth, chocolate, a bit of espresso, all with a very chewy mouthfeel. Really wonderful beer.
3.7 Pours dark mahogany, frothy ivory head... Has a good look. Nose is fudge, tobacco, earth. Pretty good feel, medium, almost creamy. Toasty malts, some dark fruit. A candy like bitterness in the end was a hair off, a puff of smoke in there too.
3.7 Enjoyed during our Yellowstone trip. On draft at the buffalo bar. Enjoyed with another of their local ipa's
4.4 Cold smoke is a gem. Smooth as butter. No after taste. Rich aromas.. Poors really dark, with a dark tan froth on top. Definitely a fav
2.3 At Glacier Grill & Pizza, Coram. Pours hazy dark brown with a thin, off-white head. The vague aroma contains chocolate, caramel, some hops and licorice, virtually no smoke. It tastes light sweet and light bitter, with a short finish. Light body, rather watery texture, fizzy carbonation. I cannot believe the high overall score for this one (makes me think I had the wrong beer), but it’s not what I expect from a Scotch Ale. Drinkability is not enough to score high marks.
3.5 Burk i Stevensville. Ligger väl helt rätt i normen för öltypen. En aning sötma ordentligt med fudge. Mörk!
3.4 16 oz can in Idaho. Pours brown but so dark as to be opaque in the glass. Decent tan head. Appealing lightly spicy and faintly smoky aroma. The flavor also has these traits, as well as hints of coffee and cocoa nibs. Smooth, full mouthfeel with medium carbonation.
4.5 Just pour and enjoy. Make your own analysis. You won’t be disappointed that you tried Cold Smoke.
3.3 Can from MattW. Nice dark brown pour, scant beige head settled to ring. Ashy, smoky fireplace aroma. Taste is a bit more subdued, earthy hops, a bit sweet for a Scotch. Nice lasting dirty bitterness..
2.9 Shared at the July 2016 MDBG tasting, 7/11/16. Clear dark brown, thin fizzy tan head, good retention. Aroma of toffee, caramel, smoke. The taste is cherries, smoke, toffee.
3.6 Red brown with a white head. Aroma is rich and caramelized. Taste is the same with just a bit of smoke in the finish. Thanks, dad.
3.4 beige head that left rings of lacing for the entire glass.. brew is brown... dark brown.. nice ruby highlites.. Biscuit malts and dark caramel... bready notes in the nose.. some expected esters that are not overplayed.. no hops, although I may be missing them.. Flavor is spot-on. malty and toffee... some very lite raisin... brown malts lingering ... good mix of yeasty fruitiness.. great body and carbonation.
3.8 4 pack from a shop in the Bozeman airport. This is a clear deep, rich red. Looks more brown in the dim light. A permanent, off-white head forms. Malty nose with vanilla, oak, toffee and just a faint whiff of smoke. Sure it’s sweet, but not too sweet. Tastes earthy like tobacco with suggestions of wood and vanilla. So clean and full bodied.
3.2 On tap at Gil’s Goods in Livingston. Pours a nice, dark, ruby brown, with no real head. The aroma is toffee, caramel, and some earthy notes. Sweet and malty, with a bit of bitterness. Medium body, crisp, grainy, and smooth. This is a mild and drinkable scotch ale. Not strong nor aggressive, and no real peat or oak which is a shame, but nice and malty.
2.8 Can at a some BBQ spot in Montana, light smoke and some caramel malty flavors . Thin body and thats it. Well its also wet.
3.7 Pours a super dark brown with an inch of off white foam. Smells of roasted malt with some smoke and chocolate. Tastes of roasted malt, light smoke, chocolate, milk shake like flavour near the finish. Creamy smooth mouthfeel, fairly light carbonation. One of the better beers of the style, given my lack of love for them.
3.4 On tap. Pours a clear mahogany with a medium, fizzy, long lasting, beige head that laces nicely. Sweet aroma of roasted malt, caramel and light peat. Sweet flavour of roasted malt, caramel, dark fruit and coffee with a hint of smoke in the finish. Medium body with a smooth, sticky texture and soft carbonation. Tasty.
2.8 Can. Pours a dark amber with medium beige head that lasts. The aroma is smoke and roast. Thin mouthfeel with roasted malt and light smoke finish, decent.
2.5 Pours a dark brown from a can, little nose to it. Flavor is classic caramell-y roasted malts, with a smoky coffee note on the end. Okay beer.
