Kona Castaway IPA

Kona Castaway IPA

A full-bodied, American-Style I.P.A. that is bronze in color, Castaway IPA is "dry hopped" (aged with liberal amounts of whole hop flowers after fermentation) for assertive hop flavor and aroma. The bitterness is balanced by the malty body of the beer.

3.5 One of konas better ones. Nice aroma, pretty bronzish color, and good taste
3.4 One of the better Kona's out there. At first it seemed a little off balance, leaning too much on the hops and could use a bit more malt. But, for semi-macroish brew, they are aiming for a West-Coast type hop bomb, which this definitely has some bitter to it. A clear medium yellow to light orange appearance. Lots of tropical and citrus flavor.....maybe some passionfruit too. Growing on me towards the end of my single sample. Not sure I'd be too happy with a 6 of this, but something I can drink here or there.....kind of curious to see what it's like on tap now.
3.2 Pours clear dark golden color with white head. Aromas of citrus and pine with some malt. Bitter grapefruit rind and pine flavors with some malt. Medium body with average carbonation.
3.6 12 oz bottle from Food Lion in Short Pump, VA The IPA poured a clear light amber color with a small white head and lacing. The head exhibited some staying power. Aroma of floral hops and lemon zest. Nice crisp ale with a medium body. The taste has pale malts, citrus, and lemongrass. The ale has an average carbonation.well with floral flavors. Nice clean finish with upper mouth bitterness.
3.2 Slightly fruity citrus orange aroma with resinous hop Pours clear amber color with some floaties and a small white head Refreshing citrusy hop flavor with light maltiness caramel and bread. Medium light bodied with medium CO2, lingering citrus hop. Refreshing and easy to drink. Makes me want more.
3.1 14-Feb-19 (12-oz bottle, Bottled 29-Oct-18: Obtained 03-Feb-19 in trade with SDbruboy, thanks Cliff!) This IPA pours a very slightly hazy, golden-orange body with a half-inch of off-white head that settles to a small ring on the beer-clean glass. The nose offers a balance of citrusy and fleshy-tropical hop aromas with a grainy, somewhat toasty malt character; it's simple, but I like it. On the palate, though, it's a clean, dry, malt flavor, kind of old-school toasty, which I enjoy, while the hops offer flavors of unsweetened tea, orange citrus, and grapefruit pith. The beer is medium-minus in weight, medium in carbonation, and smooth and easy drinking. Overall, this is a straight-forward, balanced IPA that's simple and very crushable. I like the fact that I can actually taste malt in this beer, unlike the vast majority of IPAs I taste otherwise.
3.0 This IPA is light enough to enjoy several. Nothing too out of the ordinary and lightly hopped for an IPA. It’s just a beer, one that I’ve been having off and on for a while. Love the bottle. Liquid Aloha.
3.1 Looks nice. Smells rather neutral but you can reach for different things, but are they really there? Malt could good. It depends on how hard you work. It's solid and interesting but not something that is easy to like in the glass.
2.9 How have I not reviewed this beer yet when I've tried it many times? Fionn Whitehead on top of a bubbly yellow body. It smells subtly of Woodland and citrus hops like it is not dry hopped. Wow it definitely tastes like an IPA the brutal afterburn is subtle but still present. Yeah now it's out there on pallet too. This is the minimum standard for which an IPA must be to qualify as good
3.1 Bottle. Yellow orange pour, with a white head. Citrus, bitter, a bit watery, malt, and light caramel.
3.2 Bottle into shaker pint glass. amber color and clear. White to off-white head. Floral aroma with slight pine resin and some stronger orange peel and pithy acid grapefruit scents. Taste follows nose. Refreshing clean bitterness, malty sweetness in the midrange, and smooth slightly bitter aftertaste. Solid but basic IPA. None of the salty taste the Kona Big Wave has, which is a good thing. A fine west Coast style IPA. Would get it again if it were on sale.
4.0 Pão de Açúcar
3.4 Nice bright hoppy aroma. Golden clear west coast ipa. Crisp hop hit, Amber caramel, and malt finish.
3.6 12oz bottle from mix 12pack (Original review 6/29/2018, 3.4. Updated on 7/13/2019) AROMA: grain, moderate hoppiness, leather. Malt/brown sugar/molasses APPEARANCE: medium-light amber orange (leaning toward brown honey), pretty clear, thin yet sticky/oily head, TASTE: roasted grain/malt, barley/rye, dark chocolate, hint of sweetness, roasted veggies, moderate bitterness, toast/wood. Definitely leans toward roasted grain and nuts and wood, nice drawn out dark bitterness PALATE: crisp fresh and frizzy upfront, medium body, slight oiliness but leans toward water fluidity, some bite after the middle, OVERALL: nice take on an IPA. not a classic west coast style IPA. not over-hopped, not over-malted, relatively straight forward, good easy drinking balance between font and back. somewhere between a session IPA and a full-on IPA.
3.7 On tap, Yardhouse Waikiki. Pours clear light gold, white head. Aroma is bright apricot, mango, tangerine, bitters, grass. Flavor is much of the same, clean bright fruity IPA - super drinkable / fresh.
2.9 From work: pours somewhat hazy golden color with a white head. Aroma is flowery, biscuity... guessing this might be a bit old. Not super bitter. Not much fruit character. Flowers and sort of doughy tastes... not a very assertive beer. But it is drinkable. Somewhat bitter, especially at the finish.
3.0 light body, medium body, full body, thin feel, oily feel, creamy, sticky, slick feel, thick feel, fizzy, lively, average carbonation, soft carbonation, flat, astringent, bitter, abrupt finish, long finish,
3.5 Pours light amber with white foam. Smells fresh with some pine notes. Taste sweet with some nice bitter aftertaste. Not bad
3.8 Appearance: copper; slight head; bottle Taste: typical Hoppy ipa 4/7/18 - Pride of America(Honolulu, HI) $9.50
3.8 Pours with a great head, typical IPA aroma. Extremely well-balanced, with no one taste overwhelming it. I liked the palate which balanced fruity notes with floral influences. Much better than I had expected.
4.5 Underrated, no idea why. Not hazy at all on pour, one of the clearest IPAs out there. Coppery golden, almost a malty lager color. Medium sharp hops on nose, fruity pleasant aftertaste. Pairs well with seafood. Should be rated at or above 9.
3.2 Citrus, resin in aroma. Golden beer with small white head. Hops citrus, bitterness in flavor. Medium body, medium carbonation.
3.0 Bottle from Geoff. Pours copper some head lots of lacing. Nose is fruity and candy. Flavours of grapefruit, bitter earthy malt, grassy. Taste med bitter med sweet. Sticky body lively carbonation.
3.3 Bottle. Pours a slightly hazy golden color with a small white head. Has a fruity malty citrus hoppy aroma. Fruity malty citrus hoppy flavor. Has a fruity malty citrus hoppy finish.
3.5 Bottle from Uba ja Humal. BB 16.05.2018. Hazy paleish light amber with off-white head. Rather pleasant old-school IPA character, juicy and tropical, more sweet than bitter, fine and crisp carbonation, lightish to medium body. Dryish yet refreshing. An alright unpretentious specimen.
2.6 Bottled. Thanks Sandi! No bb or bottled-on date anywhere it would seem. Hazy golden body with a tiny white head. Stale, but generally clean malty aroma. Stale, clean sweetish malty taste, ending dry, some flowery notes, bitter finish. This has lost ALL of its hoppiness. And someone is still selling it somewhere, for a pretty high price likely. Will rerate as soon as humanly possible, but this rating is not fair. Thankfully, it won't offset the actual beer much. People, if you don't put BB or bottled-on dates anywhere, you'll get people selling your beer ages after it should have been dumped, and you'll get bad reviews. Is it worth it?
3.7 12-ounce bottle purchased while on vacation on Kauai. Oddly, the bottle notes it was brewed and bottled on the mainland, in Fort Collins, Colo. Pours clear orange with tiny white head and lacing; lots of visible carbonation. Aroma:citrus, tropical fruits, pine. Flavor: malt-forward (caramel, honey, butterscotch) with orange, papaya, pine resins. Mouthfeel: medium-bodied.
