Kuhnhenn American Imperial Stout

Kuhnhenn American Imperial Stout

An American example of an English style of beer made for the Russian Royals. This ale deep black in color, finally released after being aged for 16 months. Made using large amounts of malt and roasted barley yields the most robust beer we make. Thick coffee like flavor and aroma. This beer is well hopped and finishes bitter. This is a real treat

4.0 Shared by jrob21. Scent is strong chocoloate and light coffee. Color is darkest brown with sizable tan head. Sweet up front with nice biting finish. Thick. Bottle - Shared by jrob21
4.0 2012 from a trade a while back. Shared with ericteusink. Bittersweet coffee with an almost acidic coffee on the back end. Purple fruit plum and prune. Roasty malt aroma. Smooth up front and easy to drink. The finish is where all the flavor and fruit come in. Leaves a long bittersweet finish. Cocoa texture. Easy to drink and pretty entertaining.
4.2 2012 version thanks to Crajun. Ink black pour with a thin tan head into a snifter. Bold aroma of coffee, dark fruit, soy and booze. Huge coffee flavor with some caramel and burnt sugar. Slight hop bitterness on the finish. 9.25%abv nowhere to be found. A year plus in the bottle did this wonders!
4.0 12 ounce 2012 bottle. Thanks Ryan! Pours a thick dark black with a nice dark brown head. Aroma of malt, chocolate, and coffee. Taste is roasted malt, dark chocolate, dark fruit, coffee, and a bit of alcohol. Improves as it warms. Very nice.
4.3 (Bottle, thanks Alex, you kick ass!) Pours black dark brown head. The aroma holds holds extreme, cowabunga-ish malt roast (bit like Expedition Stout) with black currant and black currant. Plenty of hops. The flavour is near medium sweet, medium to heavily bitter and and light acidic with deep roast, dark fruit and vibrant hops. The mouthfeel is round and light sticky with a light to medium carbonation. Smoky tar and hops on the finish.Near full bodied.
4.3 Bottle received in trade. Thank you rfraga7! 2012 vintage. Pours oily pitch black with a rather big frothy and creamy dark chocolate brown head that leaves a small trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is malty, earthy and tiny fruity with heavily roasted malts, salty liquorice candy, burnt wood, burnt raisins, black currants, blackberries, caramel, soil, oatmeal cookies, resin, pine needles, alcohol, liquorice, bitter chocolate, dark roast coffee and grapefruit rinds. Taste is slightly sweet, heavy bitter and malty with heavily roasted malts, bitter chocolate, burnt wood, burnt caramel, blackberries, bilberries, burnt caramel, raisins, prunes, resin, salty liquorice candy, grapefruit rinds and dark roast coffee. Mouthfeel is soft, creamy, tiny roasted astringent, tiny boozy and full bodied. Finish is bitter and malty with heavily roasted malts, burnt caramel, burnt wood, bilberries, blackberries, oatmeal cookies, salty liquorice candy, soil and alcohol. Very nice smooth and heavy imperial stout…
3.1 Bottle @ Richard’s Tasting. Black in color with a tan head. Uck. Fusel, hot, solvent aroma. Roasted malt, coffee, caramel, and dark chocolate. Some green apple, too. Flavor is slightly sweet and syrupy with a lot of caramel and chocolate. Roasted malt, coffee, and dark chocolate/cocoa powder. Just way too boozy and hot.
4.5 2012 bottle, 12 ounces, poured into a kuhnhenn brandy snifter. Pours a thick, viscous black with the darkest head of foam I think I’ve ever seen. It’s almost a black head. Pretty good retention. The aroma has notes of thick molasses, raisin, cinnamon, fig, and licorice. Smells great. The taste has more of the dark, roasty sweetness like grilled figs and warm molasses. There’s a near bitterness that comes out toward the back end and warms the throat. Chewy mouthfeel. This beer is awesome!
4.1 Bottle: Thanks, Mike! Thick black, motor oil consistency with an impressively deep tan head; thin-bubbled, foamy, & quick to settle into a collar. Aroma is huge; thick baker’s chocolate, mildly roasted malt, light coffee bean char, & a hint of cream & brown sugar in the finish. Sweet without being cloying, roasty without being over-charred. Taste starts with nice bittersweet cocoa nibs, rich fudge, light bitterness & a heavier kilter towards creamy sweetness. Notes of mild anise & faint coffee bean in the finish, with a fudge cake & brown sugar aftertaste. Chocolate is definitely the supreme being, here. Nice, silky mouth feel. Great imperial stout.
4.0 Bottle, 2012 vintage 9.25% ABV. Aroma is full of rich dark chocolate, light roast and quite a bit of dark fruit. Cherry, plum and prune are most noticeable. Light tobacco and leather character. Pours black with a moderately small, thick, dark mocha head the recedes somewhat quickly to the edges. Flavor has a sweet, rich dark chocolate character. Medium roast with a bit of ash. Moderate leather and tobacco notes. Quite a bit of cherry, berry and plum fruit character. Some lingering leather, roast and chocolate. Medium bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium carbonation. A touch of astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall a fairly good stout, especially if you like ones with a leather character. Nice balance of fruit to even out the leather and ash. Good complexity in the chocolate character. Not much hops which I suppose isn’t surprising considering its from 2012.
4.1 Bottle (9,25% ABV, vintage ’12). A pitch black beer, with a large, frothy, lacing, mostly lasting brown head. The aroma is heavily malty (roasted grain, chocolate, coffee, molasses), with notes of plums, raisins, generally dark fruits, some booze. The flavor is heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Medium to full body, creamy/thick texture, soft carbonation, fairly long finish with moderate bitterness, moderately alcoholic. Excellent example of a chocolate-oriented Impy. Despite what the label says coffee is not the most relevant feature in this one. Nicely balanced, with bitterness from both roasted malts and hops in the finish. Booze smell and burn is well hidden, and the beer gets very thick as it warms.
3.9 12 oz. bottle served in a Kuhnhenn snifter. 2012 vintage. A: Pours a dark black color with a dark tan head forming on the pour. It recedes to a thin cap and collar. Splotchy lace is left down the glass. S: Lots of roasted malts, some dark fruit and some cocoa. A little fig with some coffee grounds and creamy chocolate. T: A ton going on. Creamy chocolate, figgy dark fruit and dust cocoa up front. Bitter coffee grounds with a heavy roasted malt profile come up mid palate. The finish is a mix of roast and slightly sweet booze. M: Heavy bodied, slick and chewy mouthfeel, with a medium carbonation level. The finish is slightly sweet from the booze, but it’s not hot at all. O: Another winner from Kuhnhenn. A deliciously balanced Imperial stout. Sweet and roasty with a heavy and chewy mouthfeel. Glad it’s cold on this Memorial Day because it goes perfectly with the day. Serving type: bottle 05-28-2013
4.1 12oz bottle, listed as 9.5 but can’t find anything else that would fit and the name matches so will rate this here. Pours a dark black with an almost midnight brown head shot through with some ruby, and even though it fades to just a faint dark brown around the glass the initial impression was unique and impressive. Slightly toasted and roasted malts which is quickly overtaken by dark chocolate, almost burnt toffee, alcohol with hints of celery, expresso remains; very thick body that gives the impression of chunkiness, mild+ carbonation, slight sweetness but then a tasty, overwhelming but delicious bitterness that coats the palate and leaves you wanting more as the taste of roasted malts, chocolate and some coffee. Delicious beer.
3.7 Dark black pour with a khaki head. Chocolate, roasted malts, a little brown sugar and some booze is present. Good.
4.0 Bottle 12fl.oz. @ [ Craig and Fin Sneak up in the middle of the NIGHT and drink all fonefans beer ]. Dark black colour with a average, creamy, good lacing, mostly lasting, beige to light brown head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, chocolate, coconut, dark roasted, alcohol. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration, roasted, sweet malt, chocoalte. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20130519]
4.2 Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a large dark brown foamy head with good retention and some good lacing. Aroma of creamy medium-dark chocolate notes with light floral coffee notes with some roasted malt notes but limited bitterness. Taste is quite spectacular with great creamy medium-dark chocolate notes with some floral dry coffee notes, some lactose notes and some medium dry bitter roasted malt to finish. Body is full with luscious creamy texture with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Quite a balanced experience with loads of flavours while retaining some good amount of drinkability.
4.0 Thanks to my sister for snagging me one of these as the 2005/2006 release of this beer I traded away my only bottle. So glad to finally get to try it. The 12oz bottle pours with deep darkness and supporting a mocha colored head. The aroma offers up dark roasted malts, black strap molasses, dark chocolate and a bit of booze at the end of the draw. The taste is similar with black strap molasses, dark roasted malts, some burnt malts and brown sugar sweetened pine hops. The roasty to burnt goodness is hitting the spot right now. Man, I have been waiting a real long time for this. It was well worth the wait. This is dynamite.
4.1 Pours pitch black with a medium dark mocha head...looks thick! Aroma has bitter dark chocolate, sweet coffee, and hints of smoke/ash and dark fruits. Flavor has some slightly tangy dark fruit up front that is quickly drowned out by bitter dark chocolate, espresso, and ash. Mouthfeel is full and creamy with a roasty espresso/dark chocolate finish that lingers. Dave Marlin would call this oil for your body.
3.9 Sort skum brun ingen Kaffe tømmer citrus grape Bitter meget sød lidt Flad sirup
4.2 bottle at Jans ... deep black ... thin tan head ... soft rich ... deep chocolate ... roast malt nose ... dark roast ... heavy roast ... big dark chocolate ... light bitter chocolate ... sweet front ... biter chocolate linger ... little vanilla
3.5 Bottle received via trade with FlandersNed. Pours opaque black with a small, frothy brown head, short retention with spotty lacing. Aroma is roast, chocolate, and coffee malt, prunes, licorice, and earthy hops. Flavor is tart dark fruits, bitter dark malt, light hops and bitterness with a dry finish. Full body and medium carbonation.
4.3 What a nice beer! This easily hangs with the big boys: Abyss, Darkness, Speedway, etc. Thick black pour with a thing tan head with almost a red hue. Malty sweet is quickly subdued by bold hops and coffee notes. Nice bitterness on the finish with only a touch of alcohol. 2012 vintage. Edit: A second bottle of 2012 vintage from my cellar. Chocolate really shines through, thick, complex. Coffee is there but not dominant. Bitter, but still malty and bitter chocolate in the finish. Fabulous.
4.0 Bottle with black label and 9.25% abv. Dark black pour, with a nice sized chocolate mouse head. Nice looking stout. Massively roasted, bitter dark chocolate, dark roast coffee, bit of caramel, and hops. Fairly dry tasting because it’s so roasty and bitter. Tasty and quite enjoyable. Thanks polomagnifico.
3.9 A nice brown lace sits on top of a rich pure dark color in my glass. The scent is of coffee, wood, roasted malts, and a chocolate aroma. Tasting this Imperial Stout I picked on coffee and malts primarily. There is a lite chocolate flavor. In the finish I was left with a coffee, roasted malts, and hops that coated my mouth. The finish has a mild bitterness too. Overall this is a fine drink. The rich ingredients stick to the palate but are pleasing and not too tainting.
3.9 12oz bottle, thanks to umich03jm. This 2012 vintage bottle has a black label with yellow print on the front, with an eagle behind the word "American". It is labeled 9.25%. Pour is almost completely black, very thick. Great thin darker brown head. Great lace. Awesome big roasty malt nose. Coffee and dark chocolate in the aroma. Big, super chewy body. Light carbonation. Long delicious roasty chocolatey coffee aftertaste, great to savor and sip on. Big roasty bitter taste. Light hint of caramel / chocolate (bitter-)sweetness. Only a slight bite in the finish. Big bitter hops noticeable. Great big imperial stout.
4.2 booyah! thanks to umich03jm for this!! dark black pour aroma was almost perfection - 9 for me which is as high as I have ever rated a beer; slight wood, malt, and chocolate!!! 4 for palate; very smooth - wanted this to be chewier but that is nitpicking. Taste - damn damn damn I love this stuff!! the dark chocolate in the taste of this beer could not be better and is phenomenal!! beer was sweet up front with the chocolate all the way through past the end; a little boozy. thank you Jason - WOW!! re-rate - 02/14. lowered from 4.4 taste and aroma still good but not as perfect as first rate.
4.7 355ml bottle shared by jsprime. 2012 vinatge. this is pretty much the perfect example of a hoppy american style imperial stout. i still think bells expedition is better but this has to be one of the top 5 impy stouts in the world. fucking awesome.
4.2 Bottle from mikem409 pours jet black with small tan head. Nose is full of dark chocolate. This transfers straight to palate with roast and booze on the edges. Body is slick and full. Booze is perfect, not to hot. This is great. Thanks again for the killer box mike.
3.9 12 oz. bottle, pours a silky black as night with a miniscule brown head. Aroma is full of dark roasted malt, significant molasses, moderate espresso and a touch of liqueur. Flavour is extremely woody and roasted predominantly - with very dry wood (not the barrel aged type), dry roasted malts, and a touch of espresso - none of the aforementioned chocolate or liqueur - with a woody and quite hoppy, bitter, dry finish. Silky smooth palate, with an element of harshness from the hops. No detection of the high ABV at all. Excellent stuff here.
