Kuhnhenn DRIPA Double Rice India Pale Ale

Kuhnhenn DRIPA Double Rice India Pale Ale

Double Rice India Pale Ale. This gold colored West Coast style Double India Pale Ale has an intense hop nose, with aromas mainly of citrus. The high hop character dominates this IPA’s flavor pro-file. Made with American long grain rice, it is quite difficult to make but the rice con-tributes to this beer’s crisp aftertaste. [The aliasing set up for this beer makes no sense when you can soft alias so easily. -GT2]

4.4 I'd made a conscious effort to drink primarily German-style beers on my Michigan trip, but I can only resist hops for so long. Kuhnhenn's DRIPA was a welcome detour from the gold-colored pils and coppery Okto-beers. DRIPA pours a hazy yellow with a rich, fluffy head. Intense and somewhat dank tropical citrus aromatics with grassy undertones. Taste profile works the same way: tropical fruits have the strongest presence with melon, papaya, stone fruit, lemon, passion fruit, and lemongrass. You also get some earthy-sweet fresh-cut lawn clippings. There's so much texture in this IPA. Creamy, thick, sticky, oily, and chewy. Finish is super dry and nearly vinous. This doesn't drink like it's nearly 10% at all.
3.8 Taster at brewpub. Pours golden with a white head. Leaves some lacing in the glass. Nice floral and citrus notes on the nose and tongue. Finished clean with a hint of bitterness. One of the better non-NE IPA’s I’ve had in awhile.
5.0 I am a wine drinker--primarly moscato. I LOVE this beer. I never thought I would say that I like, even LOVE, a beer. The hops are delicate and lace through the golden liquid like lace on a bridal gown. No after taste, just awe.
3.7 Tap at flying saucer nashville. Hazy dark golden color, white head. Aroma has lot of hops, some caramel notes, hint of tropical fruity notes. Big hoppy body, caramel notes. Little bit off balance but good.
4.3 16 ounce prowler into tulip glass, filled on 11/4/2017. Pours fairly crystal clear pale golden yellow color with a thin spotty lace cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass. Nice appearance, despite lack of carbonation. Aromas of huge tangerine, grapefruit, peach, pineapple, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, lemon zest, orange peel, citrus rind, light pepper, pine, white bread, light honey, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Incredible aromas with fantastic complexity and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical/pine hops and moderate pale malt notes; with big strength. Taste of huge tangerine, grapefruit, peach, pineapple, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, lemon zest, orange peel, citrus rind, light pepper, pine, white bread, light honey, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Moderate pine, citrus peel, grassy, spicy bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of tangerine, grapefruit, peach, pineapple, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, lemon/orange rind, pepper, pine, white bread, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical/pine hops and moderate pale malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero lingering hop astringency after the finish. Moderate increasing dryness from bitterness. Mild carbonation and medium body; with a very smooth, grainy, sticky, and fairly resinous/rind balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is fairly well hidden, a mildly increasing warmth of 9.5% after the finish. Overall this is an amazing DIPA! All around incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical/pine hops and moderate pale malt flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to drink for the ABV. Even with the lack of carbonation in this prowler, this was still a winner. Great mix of dank and vibrant hop complexity; with a really lightweight malt body for the ABV from the rice as expected. Just enough there to balance the fairly aggressive bitterness. A highly enjoyable offering.
3.9 Draft at Craft Brewed. Pours a mostly clear gold with a finger of foam that lingers. Floral notes with citrus and rice on the nose. Alcohol hidden immaculately. Crisp and clean, west coast, light body. Citrus, rice & honey. Seriously smooth, definitely could be dangerous if not careful.
3.3 a little watery in the finish but otherwise ok
3.7 Dégustée au Mondial de la Bière de Montréal 2010 (De mes notes papiers). .
4.0 Hmmmm. Kinda eager to see where this beer goes; first sip is surprisingly sweet and creamy, an unexpected booziness providing a sake-ish warmth. (Hey, we are talking fermented rice here, right?) Orange and apricot marmalade on a buttered biscuit, or maybe a citrus-caramel candy DIPA? Pine and glazed sugar as well...lots of stuff going on here, almost all of it good. Could use a bit more bitterness on the finish, but damned if my pint hasn’t already vanished. Probably wouldn’t name this an IPA during a blind taste test--sake-aged citrus strong ale, maybe?--but I do like it very much.
3.6 Tap at house of brews. Clear gold some head lots of lacing. Notes of grassy, apricot, candy. Medium body lively carbonation.
3.6 Draught @ St.Gambrinus Beer Shoppe. Faintly cloudy pinkish yellow broth-like color with whitish foamy head, fresh citrus aroma, low carbonation, medium bitter orange peel taste with a perfume like flavor, thin body, medium bitter flavorful finish. There is a certain sake-like quality to the taste, very flavorful.
3.6 Backlog, ocena przepisana z untappd, w ramach uzupełniania profilu na ratebeer.
3.7 Hazy straw yellow in color... Aroma of citrus, tropical fruit... mouthfeel is crisp, light bodied with zingy peppery and grassy bitterness on palate... solid
3.5 Tap at the source, Warren. Pours pale golden yellow, white head. Aroma is lemon, citrus, ricey malt, some biscuit malt. Flavor is sweet malt, some rice, lemon, orange, citrus. Not bad. A cool style change from traditional IIPA.
3.7 pour straw yellow with a fine white head. piny, fruity, grassy aroma. taste medium bitter. medium body, good carbonation, bitter finish
3.8 Aroma: Fruity sweet with citrus and berries. Flavour: Fruity and floral bitterness with slight sour notes and a caramel sweetness. Colour: Golden amber with a white head. From: Tap @ Mikkeller Bar Aarhus Jul. 2016.
3.3 Fairly dark in color, medium amber at least. Pretty clear. Off white, sorta creamy head. Lots of caramel malt flavor in the aroma. Fruity, oniony hops. Fairly dank. Orange juice, grapefruit, pine, grass. Some apple cider, mild pineapple. Medium to strong bitterness - haven’t seen that in awhile with all of these Vermont-ish DIPAs around now. More onion and deeper, danker hop flavors. Lots of caramel malt with a touch of bubblegum. Fairly heavy on the palate. A touch sticky. Sorta boozy. I would have guessed that this beer was over 10% abv. Bit of a disappointment, though.
4.1 On tap at CBC 2014. Pours a clear yellow with a white head. Heavy sprucy hops aromas. Hints of grain. Medium to full bodied. Soft carbonation. Bitter finish. Good.
3.6 Tap at CBC 2016, yellow session. Hoppy. Aroma of citrus, tropical and pine. Malty backbone. The flavour starts light sweet but finish heavy bitter. Medium and oily.
3.1 Draught at the newer location, 5/5/16. Strong clarity in this pale golden beer with ample carbonation and a strong brass tint. White head atop is medium-sized and wispy. Yellow fruits kick off the nose with pineapple in the lead. Nectarine, apricot and such growing lightly resinous with softly prickly pine and white grapefruit taking over towards the finish. All the while, light honey and plentiful cracker-like malts sit in the background. Notes of cucumber, dill, black pepper and green, grassy vegetation are quite apparent. Alcohol pretty well-concealed, though there’s some minor heat on the end. Similar to their other beers, there’s good attenuation, but some sticky/syrup character leftover mimicking rich honey. The carbonation is moderate and fairly engaging and bitterness isn’t obnoxious. Lots of cracker/biscuit and whitebread-like malts show through, almost outdoing the hop flavors on the finish. Some peach, pineapple, pine and grapefruit linger, with a strong overarching grassy element. Eh. It’s not a bad beer or anything, but I guess I’ve just been ruined/jaded by living in New England.
3.6 Tap @CBC16. Clear golden, white fluffy head. Fruity aroma, peach and pineapple. Flavour is dry and peachy with good caramel backing. Both juicy and dry.
3.8 On tap at CBC 2016. Clear pale yellow with a white head. Citrus and tropical fruit on top of a subtle malt body.
4.0 On tap at CBC 2016. Fruity and hoppy smell with pine and grape. Similar taste. Sweet finish. Strong bitterness.
3.3 From tap at CBC 2016. It pours clear golden with a white head. Sweet malty and spicy hoppy aroma. Quite sweet flavor with a nasty sweet spicy hoppy note.
3.5 Tap cbc. Pours hazy golden with a white head. Aroma of tropical fruits, grape, malty, light old, harsh alcohol notes, pine, resin. Taste is heavy bitter, sweet and very boozy.
3.6 Tap at CNC. Pours clear golden. Heavy pine, somewhat fruity aroma. Citrus, grapefruit.
3.2 Poured from a 64oz growler. Aroma is fairly malty with some toasted bread, caramel, and cracker notes. Medium hop notes with a strong dank character to it. Onions, garlic and some lighter citrus and pine resin. Pours a fairly clear, copper amber color with medium sized, slightly off white head that recedes to a thin film that lingers thicker on this edges. Light lacing and medium length legs. Flavor has a medium light malt note with some toasted bread, caramel and dark cracker notes. High amounts of bitterness. Lots of dank onion hop notes but a bit more grapefruit and pine resin than in the aroma. Some light alcohol spice in the finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall, I am not a fan. I’m not sure if my tastes have changed or if the beer has changed. It’s way maltier and the hop profile is way more dank than I remember.
3.7 Majority of 4 oz. pour, on tap at the brewery’s taproom in Warren, Michigan. Consumed on 4-21-16. Pours a clear gold. Long-lasting effervescence elevates the appearance. Good, cream-colored head and lacing. Smells very good. Lemon and lemongrass hoppiness in the aroma. Surprisingly bitter in flavor yet has a sweet cream quality as well. Lemon and grapefruit flavors. Dry aftertaste. Medium body. Frothy in the palate. Unremarkable palate effects.
3.3 Süßlich-dickflüssig. Leicht herb. Nice. intense, thick and viscous. Nice sweetish malty aftertaste, rich intense floral hops.
3.9 32 oz. growler. Clear pale orange. A few bubbles. Citrus hop aroma. Interesting sugar smell. I guess that’s the rice. Tastes much hoppier. Bright citrus. Sugar flavor is interesting here too. Light sweetness. Almost no bitterness. Low carbonation. Stupid plastic growler caps. Light body. I get that the rice makes it lighter and, apparently, taste less alcoholic. It’s pretty dramatic. Unique flavor from the rice, though.
