Kuhnhenn Fourth Dementia (4D) Olde Ale

Kuhnhenn Fourth Dementia (4D) Olde Ale

Deep ruby red ale. Extreme malty/caramel flavor; sweet up front, finishing with hop bitterness and aroma. Very complex beer. We recommend at least four more months of age. But it is a delight to drink now.
Batch 1 - brewed late 2003, draught only.
Batch 2 - brewed 8/1/2004
Batch 3 - brewed 2/16/2005
Batch 4 - brewed end of Dec. 2005 (part of this batch was bourbon-aged)

4.1 Had this many times over the years, might as well rate it seeing as u had a really fantastic bottle last night at Scott’s .. . Deep caramel, burnt toffee, mild booze, and sherry eyes .. . Rich and boozy, but soft like the last morsel .. Legit beer .. . . When my boss gets mad, he throws things. Last week he destroyed a phone and a calculator..
1.4 This was my first kuhnhenn beer and if the rest are like this, this should be my last. 2013 was infected?
4.0 This bottle is a nicely aged 2012 so the ABV may actually be a bit more. Nice dark plumb pour with pretty much no head. Bozzy rich scent. Plumb and prune, other fruits, caramel and more. A bit sticky. Lots of roasted stuff going on in the mouth. Raisin. Sweets, lots of caramel, lots. Maybe even butterscotch. Sweet. Reminds me of a Barley Wine. Very well balanced. A flavour journey. Really nice.
Mycket gott!
4.0 Bottle via Alex R. Pours a dark brownish black, slightly translucent. Aroma slightly chocolatey roasty, toffee. Body smooth and rich, with a latent sweetness.
4.0 12oz bottle 2013 vintage pours murky reddish brown with small layer of head, low carb. Nose is deep and rich plum, dark fruit, prune, raisin, vanilla, butterscotch, caramel, fig. Taste is similar to nose with an astounding level of complexity, so much going on, rich layered dark fruits and caramel vanilla bread, dark dried raisin and leather. Finishes semi sweet, low bitterness lingering toffee and caramel. Really good, serious brew.
3.8 12 oz. bottle shared by Willrunforbeer. Blind tasting... Murky brown color without head. Aroma is figs, sugar covered dates and light yeast. This is sweet as "all get out". Whoa, sugar covered raisins, figs and dried dark fruit. Slight prune juice hints. Alcohol is slightly noticeable in the finish but never would have guessed 13.5 % after the fact. Later I find it’s the 2013 vintage. The brew reminds me of a older barely wine or high ABV Abby Dubbel. Sweet sugar finish. Super sweetness.
3.9 12oz bottle from trade. Dated 2013. Pours muddy brown with a white ring. Aroma is raisin, molasses, brown sugar. Taste is quite sweet. Raisin, date, brown sugar, a bit of red fruit. Warm. I’m liking this, but beware it is nearly cloying.
3.9 February 21, 2015. Bottle at home, 2011 vintage. Murky amber without any head. Aroma is plums, figs, toffee, brown sugar, alcohol, slight touch of roasted malts. Taste is sweet dried fruits, brown sugar, very light bitterness, some oxidized notes, finish is light roasted malts. Medium bodied, creamy texture, soft carbonation.
3.7 Bottle at Craig’s. Pours dark brown, nose is slightly oxidised, sherry, taste is sweet fruits, sickly caramel, tasty.
4.4 re-rate 1/16...2013 bottle probably from the reat umich03jm also.........not much to add to below notes. kept rating at 4.4. in my top 10 all time of beers. great stuff. need more.......................................................2012 bottle from umich03jm.dammmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm that’s great. seemed to be sediments in pour from bottle to glass. dark dirty brownish pour with light lacing on edges. dark fruits burnt sugar and toffee in aroma. Same in taste with much sweetness toward end. that’s a ridiculously great tasting beer - some alcohol, some qualities of a port, not hard liquor. loved this!!
4.2 Bottle: Had this many times on tap & from various bottles. Review from a two-year old 2011 bottle, the best vintage I can recall having. Thick pour, deep mahogany & ruby color with a very small khaki crown that recedes to a thin ring in just moments. Huge aroma. Bursting with power. Caramel, warm toffee, brown sugar, plums, black cherry, candied dates, a hint of woodiness, burnt nuts, sherry & brandy booze characters, tobacco, graham cracker, a hint of butterscotch with some vanilla... WOW. Complex beyond belief. Taste is no different; huge dark fruit presence with notes of cherry, plum, prune, & even raspberry. Sticky sweet caramel & toffee drizzle laces with brown sugar, vanilla, brandy, honey, light maple syrup, & even a hint of marshmallow. Slight earthy & nutty tones in the back-end, finishing with complex notes of nuts, toffee, graham cracker, & black raspberry. Huge, sticky body that coats the palate. Just an incredible beer. I might be the only person to feel this way, but I slightly prefer this to the Bourbon Barrel version, if only because much of the dizzying complexity gets blunted with the heavy barrel influence.
4.7 Wow. wow wow. This is awesome! Pours dark brown to black with not much carbonation. Aroma is sickly sweet caramel, raisin and toffee. Taste is just great, a bit boozy, but big caramel and toffee sweetness and I mean big. Raisins, plums, figs, oak. It’s just a pleasant sipper.
3.9 Bottle, 2011 3dti0n. Dark brown with a small beige head. Malty nose with some whiskey and sharp alcohol. A bit intimidating. Full bodied and sugary beast, but also soft and full. Lots of malt; brown sugar, molasses, vanilla, coconut, dark dried fruit. Alcohol isn’t harsh but warming and it works really well as a sipper for the winter. Short on time I had to line up a couple of Jägerbombs to get things moving. Full and sugary, but not sticky. Long malty finish with bourbon notes even though it is not barrel aged. Really long finish. Neh! Neh! Neh! Fuh! Fuh! Fuh! Indians.
4.5 12 oz. bottle shared by jcwattsrugger. 2013 vintage. Dark mahogany pour. Little to no head, ok, perhaps a thin beige ring. Aroma is rich and boozy. Caramel, toffee, maple syrup and a heady dose of alcohol. Sweet, but not cloyingly so. Slow sips net you a gut warming glow. All I can say is Wow! and thanks for sharing John.
3.8 2013 vintage shared by Jcwattsrugger, thanks for the opportunity! Big sweet sugary alcohol touch of oxidation. Nice brew.
4.5 From a 12 fl. oz bottle. 2013 batch. Shared by jcwattsrugger. Deep amber brown pour. The nose smells boozy but sweet at the same time. Barley malts are in the air. Full body. The sweet maltiness of the taste tends to override the boozy quality up front. Incredibly nice but a bit too sweet for my liking.
3.8 12 oz. bottle supplied by jcwattsrugger - many thanks! Consumed with the NH Harley Davidson crew at Martha’s. To medium-sized snifter, itburnt s a oaken light brown; no carbonation to speak of. Aromas of burnt caramel, butterscotch, stale maple sugar, English noble hops, 2-Row, graham root, roasted marshmallows, and dried lavender. Tastes the same with the addition of golden raisins, sweet malts, mashed bananas, Ceylon black tea, and breadcrumbs. Sweet, syrupy, and delicately warming. Only a bit oxidized.
4.0 12oz bottle-still-dk anber. Abourbon, sweet dk fruit, med malt-caramel. T-follows. Smooth.
4.7 Flaska från ölbutikken 2011 drucken med ölföreningen. 13,5% abv. Ett massivt öl med en gigantisk kropp som gör att alkoholstyrkan är helt integrerad. Silkeslen fyllig munkänsla, söt men välbalanserad. Komplex söt smakbild med stor fatkaraktär. Bourbon, vanilj, cognac, smörkakor, fudge, marsipan och torkad frukt inlagd i cognac. Fantastiskt god.

Sublime.
3.4 2009 12oz bottle to snifter. Completely flat. Syrupy sweet. Huga maltiness. Minimal bitterness. Past it’s prime I think but delicious.
4.0 Bottle - Vintage 2011 - Toffee, dark fruit, molasses, cocoa and raisin. Murky brown with almost no head. Tons of sweet dark sugars, molasses, liquorice and a long sweet sugary raisin bitter finish. Superbly rich and complex.
4.2 recieved a vintage 2011 bottle as extra in a trade. shared it with a friend. poured a murky dark brown copper colour with no head. with a big alcohol lacing on the side of the glass, lots of caramel, almond, port, caramel sugar, raisins, some prunes, lot of sweet dark fruit, big alcohol notice, it really tasted like it was barrel aged. such a big full flavoured beer! makes me wondering how good that BA version needs to be! first beer from this brewery! and it makes me wondering to try more of them!!
3.9 Bottle. Pours unclear mahogny in color with a tan head. Butterscotch sweetness, dark fruityness as in raisins, old leather, damp cellar and more of some garden fruits in aroma. Dark and bitter chocolate in taste at first, which then goes into a more sweeter direction with some toffee and ripe dark fruits. Nice, soft and smooth mouthfeel as well. Even if this brew is in the end a bit on the sweeter side it doesn’t get too cloying though. Leather and semi-old garden sweet fruits with dark syrup in finish.
3.9 2011 bottle. Dark brown with a small off-white head. Aroma is caramel, coffee and malt. Taste is sweet raisin, toffee and malt
4.0 on tap at mikkeller and friends. rich shade of reddish brown with a modest off-white head; aroma of stonefruit, licorice and light bitter chocolate; plenty of warming alcohol; flavours of cigar dipped in brandy, trail mix; rich and complex
4.0 Dark brown with some ruby gleam, no head. Aroma is strong toffee, ripe dark fruit, toast and some roasty notes with alcohol. Taste is complex from some bitterness to very sweet, malty to balanced in the aftertaste, with high alcohol mouth feel. Medium body with no carbonation and a sticky texture.
4.1 Hazy light brown / dark amber pour. Big caramel, toffee and malt nose. Sweet tasting, but full and complex, thick mouthfeel. Yummy.
