4.2 ’11 Bottle in January ’14 from flandersned-thanks, Steve! Muddelled brown red. Huge tart cherry nose, light mustiness. Full bodied, sweet and sour pure cherry flavor, light spice. Cherry overwhelms whatever oud bruin characteristics this might have, but for the purity and intensity of it, I can forgive it. Kind of blown away how much fruit is still on this 3 years in.
4.1 Bottle: Review based on 2010 vintage @ about 3 years old. Rich walnut color. Ruby borders, darker mahogany center. Chubby, light-tan head rests on top, receding pretty quickly to nothing. Swift kick of sour cherries on the nose up front, layered with toffee candy, sweet molasses, mild black licorice, warming sherry-like booze, & a nice waft of musty lacto. First sip is even more tart than I was expecting. Incredibly tart. Sour. Huge black cherry flavor, borderline puckering, over a blanket of devistatingly sweet malts. Toasted caramel, buttery toffee, mild anise, molasses, sherry, blackcurrant, faint vanilla, & a nice finish of red grape & cherry skin that provides a drying, vinous, nearly tannic feel on the aftertaste. Slightly acetic with hints of balsamic vinegar that never overpower. Much more complex than expected. Newer (younger) vintages are not as sour but should evolve with time. Either way, unique & delicious beer. Great stuff. So, so dope.
3.8 Really, really sweet cherry dominant beer. Doesn’t have too much of the acetic acid quality that most oud bruins have, which is nice, but also just kinda like a lesser version of a Wisconsin Belgian Red or Phoenix Kriek.
3.8 Cherry oud bruin bottle. Pours a dark amber with small white head. The aroma is cardboard, old sponge, yeast. Thin mouthfeel with jammy cherry, booze, yeast, very good.
3.4 Low carbonation with slight warmth. Intense, tart dark cherry taste and smell. Not very sour and almost doesn’t even taste like a beer. Aftertaste is bittersweet with some brett and oak character to it.
4.1 6 Oct 2014, bottle. Cherry Oude Bruin version. amber, clear, no bubbles. nose is tart cherry barley wine almost. med body and faintly fizzy. cherry lifesavers, moderate alcohol, moderately tart. really good!
3.9 2010 bottle. Pours a brownish-amber color with a thin beige head that diminishes quickly to an outer ring. Minimal lacing on the glass. Aroma of dark fruit, grainy malt and oak. Full-bodied with flavors of cherries, earthy malt, caramel and wood. The finish is fruity with a toasty malt and cherry aftertaste. Pretty good all around.
3.3 12 oz. bottle shared by dudeabide - thanks again, Nate! 2011 vintage. 10.5% ABV. Pours a mostly clear amber with some spots of lace. Has a nice sweet cherry aroma, with caramel, brown sugar, and some old oaky funk. The flavor is tangy, with sweet malts, maraschino cherry juice, cardboard, and some sour fruits, like plums. Medium-bodied, with low carbonation and a sweet, mildly sour mouthfeel. Way past its prime, but still has its charms.
4.1 Deep ruby and brown colored pour. Not much head. No lacing. Huge sour aroma with notes of cherries. Some raspberry notes as well. Taste is the same with a big sour cherry affront on the tongue.
3.5 12 oz. bottle, sent from mista (thanks Geoff), pours an opaque dark mahogany / brown with a small beige head that quickly dissipates / fizzes out. Nose brings out loads of fresh cherries upfront, with some mild wild yeast, and very subtle tartness. Flavour is quite intensely sweet from the fresh cherries without being cloying somehow -- the cherries sit atop light tartness and wild yeast that is all buried. More sips reveal a sort of chocolatey cherry decadent dessert. Finishes slightly boozy and very fruity. This wouldn’t normally be my kind of thing, but for what it is, it’s executed nicely.
3.4 Won this in Fantasy football shared it DLD 14. Pours with a small, off-white head and a hazed brown body. Aroma of maraschino cherry syrup and some dark cherry preserve. Taste is sweet and then sour. Fruity and boozy. Light bubbles.
3.3 Intense medicinal cherry nose. Sharp, astringent, artificial. Like sno-cone cherry syrup, super fake. No way this is 12%, damn guys.
4.2 12oz bottle from trade with umich03jm. Thanks, Jason. Pours cloudy orange brown with no head. Aroma of dried cherries, slight yogurt funk. Taste is all sour cherry. Finishes dry. Delicious!
4.5 A- Pours a deep, dark, reddish brown color with a very small, off white head that fades quickly. S- Cherry, cedar, slightly medicinal T- I was hit with a barrage of flavor. A deep tartness up front moves on to huge, dark cherry notes, sweetness, brown sugar, underlying wood and prickly hints of hop that are almost masked by a slight lingering sourness. M- Thick with low carbonation. D- This was an amazing beer that didnt look or smell like it tasted.
3.4 2011 12oz bottle, thanks to alexsdad06 for sharing! 2011 vintage. Labeled "Cherry Olde Brune". Labeled 10.5%. Mostly clear dark red color. Thin off-white head. Dots of lace. Nice ruby color. Good sweet cherry fruity nose. Cherry cough drop. Some oud bruin type wood notes. Moderate sweet, light to moderate tart, kind of spicy woody taste. Medium to bigger body. Smooth, lighter carbonation. Light slick, light dry too though. Interesting sour red beer. Bigger body, bigger sweetness than typical too. Kind of more sweet than I’d like, would prefer more sour. But good solid stuff.
3.5 Bottle to taster (shad by alexsdad06). Bottle is labeled Cherry Olde Brune (2011 vintage; 10.5%). Looks solid; a fairly transparent dark amber with thin off-white lacing. Smells tart and malty with notes of cherries and mild sweetness. Tastes like it smells, with more cherries. Some caramel too. Average on the palate. A little syrupy, but good nonetheless.
3.3 Bottle shared wth some brahs, pours clearish brown, with light head and lace. Notes are cherry funk, perfume, and light nail polish. Maybe cranberry as it warms. Overall, too syrupy and acidic barny.
3.8 Bottle labeled Cherry Oud Bruine Ale from Kuhnhenn. Poured deep reb brown thin super thin creme head. Aroma of brett sour cherry. Light fine carb med bod. Not overpowering sourness but the kick of cherry is nice.
3.4 2013 bottle at 12.75% ABV. Aroma is very fruity with quite a bit of sweet cherry character. Not much malt character underneath, but hints of toasted bread. I was expecting more Brett character, but it really only has a bit of cherry pie and a very faint barnyard character. Pours an amber brown with a thin tan head that quickly recedes the edges where it disappears. No lacing but medium sized legs. Flavor has a fairly strong sweetness with a big cherry juice flavor. Some light malt character with toasted bread and caramel with just a faint hint of chocolate. Only faint acidity. Lots of cherry pie notes but not much else. Pretty much only a very faint barnyard note, and a hint of alcohol but it is otherwise all hidden by cherry juice. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium low carbonation. Low astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall an interesting take on an oude bruin, but a lot of cherry juice that kind of overwhelms the rest of the beer. I think some age may help add some carbonation and add complexity to the otherwise fairly one dimensional beer. The alcohol is really well hidden though.
4.2 Thanks to HisBoyElroy. A deep cherry aroma with some other citrus fruit skins. Very nice flavor. Seriously dangerous drinkability while being 12.75% and that easy drinking. Very great stuff.
3.5 Bottle from Winter Solstice 2013. Pours a deep rose with an amber hue. Little to no head, minimal lacing. Aromas of tart cherries, earth and alcohol. Tastes sweet upfront, hints of a caramel sweetness....sweet cherry...slight funk...medium to full mouthfeel. Finishes moderately tart, with a bit of lingering spice on the tail end. Very weird. Very much a Kunhenn beer. I enjoy it very much!
3.4 From the 12/2013 3R6P gathering +++ Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured an red-orange-brown color with a small foamy off white head that faded quickly and left no lacing. The aroma was tart and sour with notes of barbecue sauce, honey, peach, ketchup and cherry pie. The flavor was tart ketchup, barbecue, honey, beef and cherry pie. Long tart finish of ketchup, barbecue, honey and beef. Medium body. Very weird.
3.9 Tap at 2013 Winter Solstice. Labeled as Cherry Oude Bruin. Pours a dark reddish-brown with a small foamy head that fades slowly and leaves some nice lacing. Aromas has a fairly strong brett/barnyard smell with an underlying sour cherry, plum, caramel, and oak. Tastes better than the aroma. Slightly sour cherries, plums and caramel mostly. Slightly sweet. Finishes with a subtle barnyard and oak taste that mixes well with the caramel cherries. Drinks easier than the abv suggests. Definitely an interesting sour brown.
4.1 Starts out a bit funky. As you go tons of sour cherries really enjoy the fruit-forwardness.
4.0 On tap at the Kuhnhenn Winter Solstice party. The pour is a light brown with a lot of reddish or ruby characteristics. The head is white, decently thick, leaving decent lace. The aroma is quite a bit more sour than I had anticipated, with a beautifully overwhelming cherry note. The flavor isn't as tart or sour as is expect or prefer, but the cherry is definitely there. The mouth feel is quite thin, and the cherry flavor lingers an obscene amount of time, which I love
4.1 4/28/2011: Kuhnhenn Imperial Olde Brune (Sour Cherry Beer)... Aroma: Smells awesome! Sugary caramel; maraschino cherry; quite a nice nose full! Appearance: Ruby color; thin beige to dark ivory-colored head; not much visible carbonation. Flavor: Tons of malty caramel and sweet cherry; just a touch of sour cherry and tartness with more maltiness following closely behind; more delicious cherry and caramel comes through during the finish; nice sweetness without being cloying - lots of good cherry and caramel flavors. Palate: Medium-full body; smooth, thick, and mellow. Overall: DAMN GOOD! 12 fl. oz. bottle (10.5% Alc/Vol) shared by alexsdad06. Thanks Brad! Rating #148 for this beer.
3.8 Rated in 2010 (Backlog) - Red brown in color with an average sized beige head. Aroma is of cherry, light funk and wood. Taste is of funk, oak and cherry pie filling.
3.8 Bottle. Thanks to foppa78 for sharing. Pours a dark brown color with off white head. Flat malty, brown sugar, candi sugar aromas. Malty covered cherry, slight syrupy flavors. Very nice beer. Thanks Mat!
4.0 Bottle @ JetsonFest III, thanks to foppa78. Mat is the man! Pours a clear, dark reddish brown appearance with a light brown head. Caramel, tootsie roll, chocolate, sweet tart cherry aroma. Goopy, syrupy, mild honey, big cherry, raspberry flavor. Thick gooey consistency with some booze. Definitely fun to try. Thanks a bunch, Mat!
3.8 Bottle thanks to ericandersnavy/boomer0813. The smell is furits, cherry, light oak, and nice. The look is amber in color, clear, and no head. The taste is tart, cherry, and nice.
