Kuhnhenn Solar Eclipse

Kuhnhenn Solar Eclipse

Imperial Stout
This Stout is full of roasted flavor and aroma, with lots of body and sweetness. A Burns Family Artesian Ale Recipe.
(from 2022 label)

One of our strongest ales. Brewed in several stages starting in 2017, we stepped it higher and higher in gravity. It was not ready to release for that solstice, but a second wave of feeding this beast of a beer in 2018 fermented it to our desired level. We believe it is finally ready to release. Intense roasted caramel flavor and aroma. With chocolate notes. The finish takes your breath away all the way to the belly. A labor of LOVE.

4.0 2008 bottle. Super dark pour. Fruity and dark. This is crazy good. Love it!
2.9 2010 bottle. Black pour. Nose is veggies, metal, oxidation. Taste is the same and very boozy.
3.7 ’14 b-day tasting party. ’10 bottle from FlandersNed-thanks, Steve! Much thinner than I expected given the OG. Alcohol well integrated though. Nose of light soy, dark roast malts. Burnt malts, some light prune, light tartness on the finish, almost like a belgian style stout. Good, but perhaps on its way out...
3.7 2012 12oz bottle in a teku. Pours black with a small, beige head. Aroma of dark malts, some oak and alcohol, light dough, some dark fruits, and vanilla and chocolate. Flavor the same with a decent blend of everything, but a lot of ethanol. Smooth, thicker texture. A decent beer for 18%
2.5 Almost black, thin beige head. Fairly strong soy sauce aroma from the oxidation, along with herbal elements, some anise, and toffee. Light sweetness overridden by a powerful umami taste and slightly salty twang in the back. Heavy, full-bodied, and low in carbonation. It was probably a decent enough beer at the time of its release but I could not go beyond a few sips.
4.0 Rated on 10-24-2010 (Bottle) This 18%ABV beer pours a very small very fizzy light brown head that quickly dissipates, opaque brown-black body and no lacing. The aroma is roasted malt, chocolate, sweet, fruity, and alcohol. The taste is sweet, alcohol, roasted malt, and chocolate. The mouth feel is thick and this beer burns as it is digested. This beer is medium bodied. This is without a doubt a sipping beer as it packs a punch! This is a beer that would be enjoyed in front of a fireplace on a cold, snowy day. Definitely worth trying and a beer I would drink again.
3.4 2010 vintage bottle from the 2013 Winter Solstice party. Aroma has a moderate chocolate character with lighter roast and coffee notes. Moderate soy sauce oxidation character. Light alcohol spice. Pours black with a somewhat light mocha head of moderate thickness. The head recedes fairly quickly to the edges where it lingers along with a faint film in the middle. No lacing and medium sized legs. Flavor has a light sweetness with moderate roast notes. Moderately strong dark fruit notes of cherry, berry and grape. Medium to medium light bitterness without any hop flavor. Medium light soy sauce and other oxidation character. Light alcohol spice in the finish with lingering grape, roast and chocolate. Mouthfeel is medium full to full bodied with low carbonation. Medium low astringency and medium alcohol warmth. Overall this is not an amazing beer. The oxidation creates a moderately unpleasant character and the berry ester notes are a bit strong. The malt notes have faded as well.
2.7 [Bottle / 2010 / 3+ years old] Thanks, Tim! Deep, deep brown body with a lightly khaki & beige head that fades as quickly as it forms, leaving behind only a small collar. Aroma has light roast, timid soy sauce, a touch of peat-y smoke, some dark currants, a little oxidation, & a hint of moderately sweet cocoa nibs. Lots going on, but relatively relaxed for an 18% ABV beer. The taste indeed hides the alcohol well also; sweet chocolate morsels up front followed by a rush of borderline-tart dark currants & prunes. Some cola notes in the back-end with a touch of cardboard flavor from the oxidation... Luckily it hasn’t completely taken over yet. Finish has moderate soy sauce, cocoa dust, very faint coffee beans, & dark currants. Body is thin given the specs, I guess; low carbonation & it works... Oily. Not exactly what I expected. Definitely showing a little bit of age. The 18% ABV is masked quite well, though.
3.9 2010 bottle, shared by Jason I think. Pours black with a very small ring of head. Aromas are fudge, soy sauce and milk with some light caramel, dark fruit, and alcohol. Taste is moderately sweet up front with chocolate, lactose, and caramel. Finishes with some soy sauce and light roast. Abv is well hidden. Oily mouthfeel. Has held up pretty well. Yum.
3.9 Sample from 2010 bottle. Thanks verticalbaconstrips! Almost black appearance with minimal cap. Aroma of plum, raisin, molasses, coffee, chocolate, vanilla, spices, with a hint of paper. Taste is very sweet, tangy, and a sustaining bitterness. Sticky and dry finish.
3.8 Nose of chocolate, coffee Taste followed suit but had a nice tartness. Abv well masked, really nice IS
4.2 Bottle: Vintage 2008/2009: Thanks Ken: Served in a Chouffe glass: Pitch black pour. Small brown head/lacing on top of a black colored beer. Aroma is vinous, chocolate, roasted barley malts, liquor, soya, toffee, roast, coal, sugars, tar, raisin, hints of coffee, some liquorice, sweet tones and mocha and a sprinkle of spices. Complex. Flavour is spicy, bitter, chocolate, coffee, toffee, mocha, pepper, sticky, some liquorice, leaves, roast, barley malt roast, hay roast, coal, hint of warmth/alcohol, soya, brown sugars, tar, caramelised coal, alcohol and chocolate drenched herbs and malts and some nuts. Aftertaste is a mix of bitters, nuts, barley malt roast, mocha, chocolate, leaves and some oatmeal. Low carbo, soft light spicy oily mouthfeel, full body and an oily texture. Even after all those years this beer is very good and complex, but also very spicy... Nice!
3.8 12oz bottle, most of the kuhnhenn’s i’ve had have been very underwhelming .. . pours deep brown .. medium foam .. . lots of chocolate and booze .. . quite sweet .. . one dimensional but good .. . . if you have a deer head hanging up in your house, you probably hate obama.
3.5 Old tick. This one was just a booze bomb and sweet, but didn’t phase me too hard.
3.5 This bottled brew from rbsg #29 poured a head of foamy finely sized light brown colored bubbles that were and left behind a no visible carbonation opaque black colored body and a poor lacing. The mild aroma was of black malt. The strong flavor contained notes of mild black malt and dark malt. A decent one that I would consider drinking again.
2.6 Bottle shared by BenC...thanks Ben! - Pours black with a thin tan head. Nose is boozy, with lots of sweet brown sugar, plums and dark fruit. Taste is big and sharp...lots of dark malt, dark fruit, and a long roasty coffee finish. A good deal of sugar and a long sharp finish. Medium bodied and well-carbonated.
3.6 Bottle shared by ygtbsm94. Thanks Brad! 2007 vintage The beer appears a deep, dark brown with a thin head that leaves a fair amount of lacing behind. The nose brings a heavy dose of roasted malt and alcohol. The flavor is big and bold. I’m sure age has tamed the beer to a certain extent, but it still packs a heavy punch. Flavors include roasted malt, booze, brown sugar, chocolates, dark fruits. The feel is heavy with plenty of booze. I guess it is 18% abv, after all. Overall, a pretty good beer, albeit a slow sipper. A few ounces was plenty for me. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 03-30-2011
3.9 Bottle pours purplish black with almost no head. Aroma dark fruits, roast, molasses, coffee. Flavor mainly just dark fruits and booze, a little soy. Finish a continuation of the flavor with alcohol burn. Palate full and thick, not sticky or syrupy. Alcohol very apparent. Pretty good but definitely a sipper or one to share with friends.
3.9 Bottle 33 cl, trade. Pours oily pitch black with a small brown head leaving just a rim of bubbles around the beer. Aroma is heavy of sweet molassis, roasted malts, dark fruits, soy, chocolate, coffee and alcohol. Flavor is fullbodied sweet, roasted, meaty, soy, fruity, dark fruits and bitter. Finishes bitte meaty roasted and bitter. Maybe a bit too boozy but I think the sweetness mates well with the heavy body and alcohol, very much in my taste,
9/12/9/12/10/11
3.3 2008 version All body and no head. Very light maltiness and not getting much on the head. Incredibly drinkable. But surprisingly lacking flavor for the monster it is.
4.0 Bottle at DSG 2011. black colour with a tan hean head. Aroma is licorice, malt, alcohol, coffee. Flavour is licorice, alcohol, roasted malt, coffee, chocolate. Nice beer.
3.2 2007 vintage. Pours a dark chocolate brown color that appears pitch black and completely opaque in the glass with a one finger beige head that quickly settles into a thick, lasting ring. Streaks of lacing left behind. Sweet, boozy aroma with with subtle dark fruit accompanying the sweet and roasted dark malts. Huge ethanol/alcohol presence overpowers things a bit too much for my liking hiding the malt character. Underneath all of the booze there are hints of chocolate, coffee bean, toffee, fig and raisin. The malts become more prominent as it warms but the alcohol still dominates the nose. Medium bodied and slightly oxidized with tight carbonation lingering throughout. Lots of sweet, boozy heat but more complex than the aroma suggests. Slight smokey presence with a subtle roasted malt character that counters all of the sweetness. Hints of dark chocolate, coffee bean, char and oatmeal provide some nice bitterness as a counterpoint to the booze, chocolate malt and dark fruit notes. This beer has calmed down a bit in four years but there is still a ton of alcohol flavor. Sweet booze overpowers the other flavors but the ABV is relatively well masked. A decent amount of heat in the finish but not harsh and it’s surprisingly easy to drink. It’s definitely still a sipper but I finished the bottle way faster than expected.
4.0 Bottle @ Danish Summer Gathering, Ulfborg 2011. Dark brown almost black, nice foamy brown head that doesn’t last long. Very roasted malt aroma, caramel, vanilla, chocolate, coffee. Sweet and roasted malt taste, coffee, caramel and chocolate. A warming light alcoholic burn as you shallow makes you aware of it’s high ABv, but I would have never guessed 18% as it is very well hidden, nice one !
4.3 12oz (2010) bottle from NobleSquirrel Appearance: Pours dark brown with a small tan head and good lacing Aroma: Roasted malts, dark fruit, rich chocolate, coffee and vanilla Taste: Full mouthful of roasted malts, rich chocolate, coffee grainy and a hint of hot alcohols Wow, this is a great beer. 4.0 Wow. Lots of alcohol, but this is actually good. Heavy soy nose with sweet tactic bite. Extremely good. Dark and delicious sipper.
