Lagunitas Aunt Sally

Lagunitas Aunt Sally

A Unique Dry-Hopped Sweet Tart Sour Mash Ale

We soured the wort on the Hot Side with Lactobacillus for a few days and then brewed up this smooth and hoppy sour. It tastes like a big bowl of fruity candy or some chewable flavored vitamins, but what’s the difference? It’s sweet, tart, and sassy, just like the tasty cherry pie that your favorite aunt makes. For all the Aunt Sally’s out there, You know who you are...

You remember it like it was yesterday. The beer flowed like music. The music was all that mattered. What mattered most was that nothing else mattered at all and the world outside fell away as a dream disappears upon waking, ephemeral and vaporous. You cradled her in your hand, lips trembling, her citrus suchness a swarm of expectation in your mind, her carbonate beauty as satisfying as it was overwhelming. You were new to this dance but she was not. Taking her in completely she seized your senses and you were consumed by the luminous passion, her residual sweetness, and the tart earthiness of her grin... This brew is dedicated to the real Aunt Sally. You know who you are. And you know why.

3.3 Lightly to moderately tart. Yeast, a little malt sweetness, and light hops.
3.4 This was excellent. Cloudy yellow beer with a white head. Strong aromas of sour fruits. Tastes of sour fruits, cherries, blackberries, and lemon zest with fresh wheat. Bitter/sour fruit finish. Easy to drink and delicious.
4.2 Aroma: Medium citrus, orange, pine, eucalyptus, Appearance: Cloudy, dark straw body. Small, off-white head. Low retention. Fine bubbles. Flavour: Medium-light lemon, Light mint, pine, hay. Medium-light tart note. Medium bitterness. Dry, slightly sour finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-light body. Medium carbonation, smooth. Overall: Easy drinking, great hoppiness, well balanced tart note. 355 ml bottle, poured. Thanks Amanda & Wimpie! 34. Experimental Beer
2.6 355ml bottle bought at Q Club in SoHo, Central. Looks: Translucent amber orangeNear zero head with residual soapy white foam which fades in 10 seconds; Good good sticky lacing with sparse slight carbonation. Aroma: Fragrant and sour malt, with raw mangoes, grapes, tropical fruits, strong lacto tartness, floral, fructose, light funky spice and biscuits. Taste: Sour light malt, with strong wheatyness, strong lacto tartness, grape skin, shades of red wine, fair funky spices, dry biscuits, lemon, medium bitter hops and light grass. Body: Mid to light body. Watery palate. Mouth Feel: Fairly good maltyness in a runny background. Strong lacto sourness blanketed much of the taste, with rather light grape skin and wine and not much, hops not very evident despite dry-hopping. Funky spicyness is only a touch, dry biscuity finish. Low-fi... Hoppiness: Raw mangoes, grapes, tropical fruits, and floral in nose. Lemon and light grass in taste; Bitterness is fair for an abrupt, fair astringent light malty finish. After Taste: Fairly dry. Lacto sour and light bitter to mouth. Comments: There's so much expectation for this one because of dry-hopping and sour mash. In reality it's pretty empty: hoppy raw mango aroma aside, its taste is monotone lacto tartness and not much else, low on funkyness and not much hoppiness. Drinkable but a low-end Sour Ale. No thanks!
3.4 Aroma: funky notes and pine. Appearance: cloudy straw color and white head. Taste: sour notes, medium pine bitterness, esters, funky notes. Palate: medium body and medium carbonation. Overall: its only ok, nice sour notes and some IPA hints.
4.0 Slightly hazy golden and copper coloured body with a nice, relatively thick two centimetre tall off-white head. Aroma of grass, yeast, bright soured and tart scents and a good dose of supportive malt and grain. Light to Medium-bodied; Funky, grassy and herbal characteristics up front with a good malt and grain bite along with some alcohol and grasses with dry hay and of course the most pungent - yeast flavours that range from bread to coriander seed and light bananas, all with the light, tart and noticeable funky quality throughout. Aftertaste shows a lot of complexity while still remaining true to the funky quality and relatively simple flavours - tart, dry and funky, but showing some hops, light fruits and a touch of spice near the end with the coriander seed and curacao around the edges. Overall, a nice and interesting beer that does the style very well with the funk and tart notes hitting just perfectly, while remaining refreshing and clean. I sampled this stubby twelve ounce bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Pentagon City (Arlington), Virginia on 20-September-2016 for US$1,99 sampled at home in Washington in front of the store on 16-June-2018 a day before Father's Day!

3.7 Bottle at Jane Doe. A really nice beer that got the rare to find balance of sour and ipa spot on.
3.7 Pint. Clear gold pour with thin lacy white head. Aroma is very lactic, grassy lemony hop notes, light dry-hopped sour tea like aromas, mild grapefruit. Taste is quite tart, lemony, lactic, plain yoghurt, light grassiness, good hoppiness. Well balanced, if anything I would've liked it a tad hoppier, quite good nevertheless.
3.1 Clear golden colour, medium head with short retention.Good lace. Aroma is faint, sour, lemon, pine. Medium body, creamy texture, good carbonation. Sour finish. Taste of lemon, pine, hops, grass. Good, not exceptional.
2.6 Bottle. If you like a hoppy, sour ale you might like this one. I didn't care for it.
3.3 Bottle. Pours a lightly hazy golden orange with a quickly fading off white bubbly head. Aroma is of citrus, zesty, honey, tart. Taste is of citrus, biscuit, honey, pear, grapes, lightly acidic. Light oily mouthfeel, soft to medium carbonation.
3.6 tap at Chicago brewhouse. pretty solid sour/wild ale. a little odd on finish, really hangs around. very solid beer
3.6 Basicly a sour lemon IPA. Interesting combination and very different overall.
3.9 If you want to switch it up, try this out. Very different but I always enjoy it, especially in some hot weather. Great appearance poured in a glass, and not too tart but just enough to change it up.
3.0 Pours clear straw color with a 1-finger white head. Fruity aroma, almost cider-like, with an earthy note. Medium body with a touch of oil. Finish is very dry. Flavor is sour, combining the yeast and light citrus. There is a touch of earthiness beneath the sour notes.
3.6 Hoppy sour. Not fruity and only a little sweet. Overall pretty good........
3.4 Bottle from Merchants. Aroma is some booze, piny hops, tart but not sour, slightly fruity, some lacto. Appearance is golden, off white head, clear. Taste is tart, wheat, pine, some fruit, some lacto, very refreshing. Mouthfeel is light body, light crisp carbonation, effervescent tart hoppy aftertaste. Overall, I wouldn't say this is great, but I could see myself crushing these tailgating. Easy to drink and very refreshing.
3.2 Hazy yellow gold pour with a good amount of lasting white foam. Modest hops. Modest sour. Not sure if those two elements are playing well together. Lemons. Sugar cane. Parsley. Artichoke. Overly carbonated. Feels like a dry-hopped Shandy. Not quite working for me.
3.6 Keg at the Euston Tap, West Lodge, 10/10/18. Clear golden with a decent off white cap. Nose is citric sherbets, lemon dab, straw, damp cloth, tarte fruits. Taste comprises on the turn melon, burnt citric edge, green berry must, grains, light funk layer, damp hay. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a sharp citric bite and hoppy back notes. Decent refreshing and easy drinking sour.
3.9 Bottle from matsons in Douglas, cork. Pours gold with white head. Big fruity hoppy aroma, pineapple, orange, slightly floral, tart. Lots of orange in flavour, also pineapple, lemon , grapefruit, tart, hint of caramel. The sour flavour isn't too overpowering and is just right for my taste. Great sour IPA with great flavour and aroma.
3.6 Very hoppy, herbal aroma. Pours a clear gold with white head. Slightly tart and herbal. Notes: pour at Flying Saucer beer fest KC, '17
4.3 Pour is a dark orange with mild still appearance. Smell of light citrus, tart and sweet balanced bouquet. Taste is sour forward with apricot, stone fruit, maybe cherries and cream. Nice blend. Long residual orange taste
3.5 Keg at Euston Tap. It pours very lightly hazy golden with a medium foamy white head. The aroma is soft, sweet, fresh, tangy fruits, sour apple, zesty citrus and lime The taste is crisp, dry, tart, touch bitter, pithy lemon, granny smith apple, zesty, quite bright, lactic, tangy, pear skin, must, gooseberry, white grape skin and a touch of tannin with a drying and spritzy finish. Medium body and moderate, foamy carbonation. Bright and drinkable. A nice, approable sour.
1.6 Hazy gold color with a large rocky off-white head and great retention. Good lacing. Tastes like sour lemon pledge mixed with beer. Yuck. No redeeming value. Go away Aunt Sally! What is wrong with you? Why would anyone drink this on purpose instead of real beer?
3.5 bottle - Pours lightly hazy gold. It smells of tart fruit, mostly citrus. The flavor is mildly bitter with tart citrus fruit, malty sweetness, and some more hops in the finish. Good.
3.4 Draft. Slightly hazy yellow with a good white head. Wheat, lacto, yogurt. Little sour with wheaty aftertaste.
3.0 12 oz bottle 5th Beer of Christmas 2017 The sour poured a clear gold color with a small white head and no lacing. The aroma of lemons and limes greets you. The taste is like a basket of tart fruit. The sour has a light body with soft carbonation. I have very little experience with this style of beer. This is better than some I had.
