2.9Bottle:   Deep burnt orange, in the brownish range, clear, moderate to large light beige head, foamy, sticky lacing.   Nose is somewhat non-descript, very little hop aspect, if any.   Very odd for a Lagunitas.   To have really no hop bite makes me wonder.   Some mealy/cereal aspects on the nose.   Maybe a little barnish/husky.   Ugh... straight up malt oriented beer without much hop character whatsoever.   Flavorwise its a dash of brown sugar and figs, but mainly some waxy cardboardish like flavors mixed with diluted honeycomb cereal.   Very mealy and paper like.   Oye vay, this one just does not do it for me.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   This is like an overcerealized Amber Ale.     I was really looking forward to this one too.   Certainly not all that bad, but after Kill Ugly Radio this one sure is a let down.
3.6Puffy off-white head ahbove a dark, glassy copper color. Massive upswim of tiny carbonation bubbles. Chunky, milky lace.
Nicely balanced bitter-on-bitter aroma. First hops, then toasted malt. Hops are of the California, pine variety. In the malt, burnt dark chocolate and coffee notes. Smells dark; malt wins the battle.
Burnt chocolate malt sets the table for all the other flavors. Some smokyness. Hops come out in the aftertaste. Could use a tad more sweetness for balance, but quite pleasant.
Feels milkyh and leaves a nice malty layer. A good -- if not spectactular -- amber ale. Just a nibble of bitterness in the malt. Smooth and very mellow.
3.4Poured from a bottle at the Brewery, RBSG 09 Saturday Tour. Medium brown with a tint of red with medium tan head. Sweet, malty nose, bit of fruit. Taste was sweet with malts, caramel and some hops. Dry finish.
3.4Bottle. Pours a mahogany body with a tan head. Sweet and malty caramel, dried fruit, hints of apple and caramelized sugars. Darker fruit and a mild warming. Nice.
3.612/15/2007: Lumpy Gravy pours a clear mahogany with a thin beige head. The aroma is lightly caramelly with some nutty caramel. The flavor is also malty, lightly roasty with some coffee, and some nuttiness as well. There is a light bitterness that grabs at the back of the throat. This beer is smooth and quite enjoyable.
22 fl. oz. bottle (Alc. 7.2% by Volume) shared by Rob. Thank you! Rating #447 for this beer.
3.52008 Bottle - Pours reddish amber with a small ring of beige...aroma is caramel malty and a bit of sweet apple...flavour is malty up front, chewy brown sugar, with a bit of toasted bread and light resiny bitterness at the end...probably the least bitter brew these guys have made, good balance and pretty tasty...
3.3Bottle at the brewery during RBSG09. Red-brown with a lasting head. Lots of brown sugar and caramel in the aroma. Sweet caramel and light roasted malt flavors with a bitter, hoppy finish. Medium bodied and sticky. Pretty typical of these guys in the ASA range; a bit too sweet, but still with plenty of hops. Not one of their better interpretations of this formula, but still pleasant enough.
4.0Copper color, clear, with a tan head...Malty sweet aroma...Roasty and toasty...Medium body, smooth carbonation...Smooth taste...Frank Zappa wouldn’t approve because he didn’t drink...But I do...
3.0***review from May 10, 2008***
Poured out a clear deep copper brew with a good sized, fairly thick tan head that sticks around for a bit and leaves random lacing. For whatever reason this beer went straight to my head. It’s not like I’m drinking on an empty stomach or something - I did eat 4 huge bowls of Cinnamon Toast Crunch and hour ago. This is an odd beer. The aroma is fairly unique it seems and I’m sure my description won’t show that so you’ll need to find out and discover where this beer thinks it’s going for yourself. Caramel and toasted malts, nutty, and somehow these malts blend in with the slight but dark fruitiness to give out a fairly fragrant smell. The taste is a let down or not depending if you want something different or not. Unfortunately the flavour doesn’t hit home with me: big malts {INTERLUDE - if one pours this beer from a foot above the rim of the glass it makes a volcano of foam..... try it!} More huge malts, in fact the malts are really dominant. The more buzzed I get the more I like this. The alcohol taste weakens when this warms... I’m not really sure how much alcohol can be found as I think the unwelcome presence of the hop mixture is screwing with me. HAIL NEVERMORE! Malts get close to that burnt taste. Some fruit flavour (unsweetened grapefruit and and dark fruit that may just be an effect of the massive malt content messing with my tastebuds) and the hops give out a nasty flavour on the finish. Mouthfeel is decent I guess. Smoothish sometimes. More than medium bodied. Fluctuating in strength ick bitterness. Decent carbonation. I could give this a 2.5 or a 3.5. I’m probably drunk - using the BeerPal Chat as my personal unread blog to discuss Love Bites by Judas Priest, Joe Perry from Journey, socks and sandals with myself. Bloggers are pathetic losers. Die.
3.9It looks Frank Zappa has risen from the grave once again and combined forces with the good people at Lagunitas to create a memorable brew and not just because of the catchy name. beer looks a yummy dark clear copper with a large thick tan colored head. Flavor seems light and unexpectedly bitter. Aroma is slightly metallic and has and has a remarkably similar smell to root beer with mild alcohol notes. Lots of thick malts with hints of chocolate, prunes, brown sugar, some metallic flavor and a good hop presence making the flavor a little crisp. Overall it seems sweet but leaves a mild lingering bitterness in my mouth. The beer is nicely balanced to be full flavored yet crisp and easy drinking with enough complexities to keep it interesting. This is by far the most enjoyable brew I’ve ever had from Lagunitas.
3.8Bottle. Maroon red translucent coloring. No head. Like melted candle wax. Tea, dates / dark fruit. Swear I catch an odd whiff of dijon mustard too. Warm and disarming on initial tasting. A little sharp, acidic to tongue and roof of mouth, following by a tea flavored finish.
3.2Bottle. Amber pour. Malt, toffee, fruit, and alcohol on the nose. flavor is malty sweet with some fruit and caramel. Alcohol is noticeable and light hops. Its an ok beer...not great.
3.3Bottled. An amber beer with a thin beige head. The aroma is sweet with notes of malt, caramel, and over ripe fruit. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, caramel, and fruit, as well as well as a bit of oxidation, leading to a dry metallic finish. Thanks Papsoe for sharing.
3.422oz Bottle: This bottle has been lurking in the back of my fridge forever, I can’t even remember when I put it in there...here goes. Cloudy dark amber w/ a small khaki head. Nutty, caramel aroma. Flavor is malty w/ hints of caramel & toffee. Some bitter hops kick in towards the finish. Leaves a metallic taste behind. Gets better as it warms a bit...more toasty & a bit of alcohol peeks through the aroma. Seemed to smooth out a little too.
3.6A fine hoppy, carmel, brown ale with a nice head that is long lasting. Nice smooth pallet. Very refreshing. I liked this beer!
3.6[1922-20081222] 1pt6floz bottle. Grainy malty mild fruit aroma. Clear, dark red body with a long-lasting creamy off-white head. Heavy grainy malt flavour with wood hints and a fruit base grass. Medium-full body is boozy. Not bad.
Overheard: "Heh heh, you said ’unit’." -- as in Moon Unit
Overheard: "Toula, you’re a lot cuter when you’re not making a beeline for my gonads." "She’s just sayin’ hi."

2.6Brown color with a bready malt aroma that is basically a sugary brown ale from my point of view. Taste is the same, but very much lacking. Kind of a waste of a good opportunity to do something really good here.
3.4A red copper ale with a thick moka head. A pleasant caramel and c-hops in aroma, with light vanilla notes. In mouth, a good malty nutty malt, with metallic c-hops, chertnut notes. Not overly bitter. Tasted Nov. 21 2008.
3.3Bottle shared with the Devonshire boys. Dark red in color topped by a sticky khaki head. Both the smell and the taste were mostly molasses, with a hint of green apple in the flavor. Not nearly as sweet as it smells, but definitely not a heavily hopped beer. It was enjoyable but definitely not mind blowing.
3.4Crushed with Jakebra. Smells like a alt. Bourbony, caramel malty nose. Same in the flavor, with some nice hoppiness coming in in the finish. It’s a little sweet but also a little badass.
2.6Dark mahogany robe with rapidly neglectable head. Quite a mess this one and ultimately, lumpy gravy sounds like a suitable name for this attempt at doing a bit of everything. It is very sweet from the beginning and keeps developping that niche with molasses and toffee flavours that are joined by breadiness to form a sort of a big pudding. Rather bland malt medley, a bit earthy and just uselessly sugary. Dull and timid hop character. Chaotic and not even intense as you’d expect this to be the aim of a sugar-oriented beer.
2.4Loose, pink-tinged camel suds adorn the muddy dark copper ale. Smothering aromas of grape, fig, molasses, perhaps a touch of cocoa… and sappy, oily malt. Citric American "C-hops" struggle to be heard over cloying melanoidin ubermalt (that thankfully fades to merely sweet butter.) Palate: thick. If this beer were a person, he’d be a somewhat ripe, greasy fat guy with pitstains and pizza cheese in his mustache. Not very good.
2.8A- Pours a clear dark brown hue with amber highlight, head is white creamy suds that sustain, fair lacing
S- Nose is caramel and roast malts, some slight nutty tones, and alcohol, overall rather subtle
T- Taste is rather thin, with subtle caramel and bread malts, representing, touch of brown sugar and bitter hops, finishes with light alcohol warming
M- Medium-bodied, watery texture, mild carbonation
D- A fairly bland brown ale, thinned out texture and flavor, the alcohol is well-masked but there is no strong reason to pick this up again
3.32008-12-22. Crisp red brown body, decent beige head and lacing. Mild aroma of light grains and hops, muted fruit notes. (6+) Flavour is likewise, hops are mildly resiny, light bitterness throughout is briefly sharp. (6+) Average palate. Decent well made beer but a bit ho-hum for me today. Bottle from Consumers Beverage, Buffalo
3.5pours a bronw with mild light head. definite hidden complexiites, an interesting beer.
3.6Bottle, sampled at Christmas during family beer tasting. Dark brown in color with hints of red and a tan head. Aroma of caramel, fruit, toffee and perhaps nuts. Flavor was pretty clean with a nice blend of flavors. Cocoa, earth flavors, with toffee and caramel. Some orange like bitterness in the finish. Liked in more than I thought I would.
3.5Pours dark brown with a medium tan head. Body is mainly a toffee type malt with some hoppy backing. A nice nutty flavor in there too, maybe chestnuts or hazelnuts. Reasonably well balanced. Kind of wish the Zappa beers were better overall but this one is at least solid.
3.3Chestnut pour decent head. Sweetish body with roasted malts. Quietly smokey fruits are there as well as a biscuity quality. Not too impressionable, but drinkable for sure.
3.5Bottle. Pours brownish red up to light with an off-white head. Eathy, nutty faint caramel nose. Very bold, strong nut brown ale. Light cocoa, toffee and earthy hops. Well balanced flavor, ample hop bitterness. Not too sweet. Full, round and creamy on the palate with moderate carbonation. Solid.
