Lagunitas One Hitter Series: Bitter Oats

Lagunitas One Hitter Series: Bitter Oats

A Big Boozy Blonde was brewed with a boatload of oats, giving it a creamy sweet mouthfeel with a hoppy blast. It’s like a powdered sugar donut topped with deliciously dank resinous hops. Chow down!

3.8 Bomber purchased at BevMo in Escondido ($9.99). POURS a clear-ish dark amber hue with one finger of frothy white foam that soon dissipates. AROMA of sweet overripe tropical fruit, spicy / perfumy / dank hops, sticky pine resin, citrus peel, with a hint of malt presence (but no oats). FLAVOR of spicy hops, tangerine, tropical fruit (mango, guava), grapefruit, pine needles, with a strong caramel/honey (perhaps oatmeal?) malt presence which creates a sort of balance with the hop onslaught. Packs in a decent amount of sweetness with all the bitterness. Boozy in the finish...it does show some of the great big ABV and I’m feeling it while only halfway through the bottle. Not sure what the purpose of the oats is here, though perhaps it creates a smoother mouthfeel though it’s hard to tell with the big hops and booze. (135, 1020)
3.9 Pours a golden amber color. Aromas of floral hops, some sweetness, and a touch of fruit. Flavors of hops, pine and citrus. Light body with a bittersweet finish and long aftertaste.
3.7 Bomber. Bright golden orange with a creamy head. Lots of pine in this beer, so much that even I can taste it and I am pine challenged. I also taste oats. It is resinous and just mildly bitter. Alcohol is not tasted but is felt! Some pitted fruit comes with warming. A lot of sweetness is noticed late. It is quite sugary. Tangerine and melon after that. Finishing with that pine again. Good stuff.
3.8 Bomber shared by Bvery, thanks buddy! nice clear copper pour. Nice citrus hop aroma. Taste follows with some sweetness. Interesting and not bad.
3.7 Bomber. Clear orange. Resin and toffee. Small frothy head. Bitter and chewy. Good.
3.8 Bottle share at Cotteridge II as Lagunitas Bitter Oats. Many thanks to Mr Frog for this one. Orange, slight haze, still, big foamy off-white head. Aroma is toffee, straight dried hops, leaves, dried flowers. Body is smooth, soft carbonation. Taste is grassy, twiggy, dried hops, oatcakes, oaty astringency, dry and bitter. Packs a punch. Nice. (3.8)
3.5 On tap, Hopmonk. Nice mostly amber hue, faint aroma, proper "rings" of lacing as the level drops. Very happy, refreshing.
3.5 22oz bottle pours a clear orange with some frothy, white head. Nose has soap, orange peel, mild grass, mild herbs. Flavor is malty, honey, orange peel, herbs, soap. Bitter finish.
4.0 Tasted from a bomber. It poured a slightly hazy golden orange hue with a big frothy off-white head that left plenty of lacing (almost solid). Citrus, oats, hops and pine on the nose, with a well hopped grapefruit and alcohol taste. Bitter up front and on the finish, but don’t let the name scare you. It’s not overwhelming (but I’m into that kinda think being a hop head). I do love Lagunitas (and my wife who bought me this brew). This beer was just the thing to help me forget Kyle Schwarber’s season ending injury. Well I guess I didn’t forget it because I just mentioned it. DAMN IT ALL TO HELL! (Go CUBS)
4.0 Slight haze to an orange pour. Small white head. Little lacing. Nice malty, fruity aroma reminiscent of fruity pebbles. Taste is lemony cream and huge malt. Creamy finish with oranges and lemons.
3.5 From a bottle at the DC tasting on March 25, 2016. Poured a clear golden orange color with a white head. Aroma was light citrus, touch of honey. Floral. Light tropical fruit, someone said "honey mustard" and I guess I kind of see it, though since I love honey mustard, I guess it’s not really a detriment. Light malty sweetness. Pleasant.
3.7 Bottle. Cotteridge Beano v2. Orange amber. White head. Sweet orange. Herb. Soft spice hop. Taste is sweet and chewy. Smooth, chewy mouthfeel. More sweetness on the finish. Too much. Tasty, though. One I’d like to try again on its own.
3.8 Bottle shared at the DC Tasting on 3/25/2016. Thanks argo0! Clear golden orange with off-white head. Aromas of floral notes, citrus, honey, malt. Tastes of floral notes, citrus, tropical fruit. Medium body with a dry finish.
3.9 22oz bottle 3/26/16 (Armanetti’s-Aurora)-42° in Shaker-Pours light amber with a nice off white head. Aroma of hops, citrus, grapefruit, and oats. Taste of citrus, oatmeal, hops, malt, and slight alcohol. This medium bodied brew is well balanced and another kick butt brew from Lagunitas.
3.6 An odd ipa with the oat vibe but decent. Citrus and a little booze. Some candied apple. Golden pour. Bottle shared at tasting.
3.5 22oz bottle. Small off-white head atop clear amber body. Aroma is moderately sweet, grapefruit, some orange, light oatmeal. Taste is moderately sweet, grapefruit rind, light grapefruit. Medium body, some acidity.
3.6 Bottle. Clear golden yellow color. Piney aroma. Taste is bitter pine resin. Pretty good.
4.0 Draught at 4 th Avenue Bar, Brooklyn, NYC. Clear golden beer with a decent offwhite head. Fresh hoppy pine and citrus aroma, peach, pine apples, tangerine notes, some mango. Hoppy mango and tangerine flavor, oranges, grapes, pine apples, some pine. Really good fresh fruity DIPA with well hidden alcohol.
4.0 Smells of some really dank hops. Pours a dark Amber color. Just fantastic beer. The malty rye and oats really support the backbone of this really hoppy beer. Hope they bottle this again. Cheers.
4.1 Big bottle with commonmac during March madness. Dark gold orange with nice white head and good lacing. Really good citrus hop nose. Powerful. Taste grows over the first few seconds. Sugary. Funky dank bitterness. Full body. A very aggressive, full flavored beer. Like that they didn’t leave much on the table here.
4.2 Bomber sized bottle acquired from Elevated or Haskells. Memory fails me right now. Consumed with commonshawn during March Madness. Golden orange in color...looks a lot like other Lagunitas high ABV double IPA offerings. Lacing looks to be quite strong. Half finger white head. Aroma is heavily citrus influenced with tropical fruits also playing a role. Very sweet nose. Taste is big and complex with plenty of sweetness playing along with the traditional West Coast hops the brewery is known for. Alcohol plays a significant role and there’s no doubting this one carries a high ABV. Pine and resin are prevalent but are in a constant state of competition with a sugary, nearly caramel malty quality. Initially it does have the smooth mouthfeel as advertised but eventually gives way to the traditional double IPA finish. Probably one you want to explore in small doses but I’m a definite fan.
3.7 On tap it has a honey golden color with a medium head. The nose has resin, orange and hops. Taste has some dankness but also some tropical fruits and a mild bitterness. Average beer that I thought would have more to it.
4.3 Whoa, what a powerhouse! Aroma is rich malt and hop, but doesn’t really prepare you for the flavor smack. Which is intensely bittersweet. Not much sign of alcohol.
4.0 Bottle at CWC II; hazy golden amber pour with a frothy beige head, aroma has grapefruit and lemon, taste has some wonderful fresh hop action consisting of pine, grapefruit and a hint of mango, sweet malts.
3.7 Bottle big thanks to Fergus at the 2016 Cotteridge Convention. It pours clear orange – amber with a medium white head. The aroma is fresh, grassy, herbal, dank, orange peel, floral, lemongrass and tropical fruits. The taste is crisp, bitter, peppery spice, straw, cereal, grass, light danky herbal notes, florals and orange peel with a dry, slightly spiced finish. Medium body and moderate. Interesting and rather enjoyable.
4.3 Cotteridge Convention II. Bottle shared thanks to mr frog, cheers fergus. Amber beer. Aroma of passionfruit and pine. Taste is passionfruit, pine resin, some caramel and pink grapefruit. Medium bodied. Excellent.
3.3 Tried at Cotteridge 2. Golden colour with a small to medium white head. Aroma is caramel bitter hoppy, pine and berry fruit, taste mid bitter.
4.0 Cotteridge 2 tasting. Hazy amber lasting beige head. Big massive fresh hop aroma. Wow lots of dank hops. Big pine. Big beer. Big hops. Dank. Lovely.
3.8 22 oz. bottle that I think Theydon_Bois purchased at Lagunitas. Then he shared it with his best buds back at the Hyatt during our fart share. Thanks, Colin! Pours a mostly clear vivid gold color with a small white head that settles into a ring and leaves some streaks and a bit fo film. Notes of lemon, sweet malts, herbs, cereal, straw, and tea. Medium-bodied, with a smooth, bitter, sweet mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. Unique DIPA. Good.
3.3 Pours golden orange with small to medium off white head. Notes are caramel, super bitter hops, pine, cherry, and sweet malt. Light to medium body. Too sugary and slightly hot.
