Lagunitas The Waldos' Special Ale

Lagunitas The Waldos' Special Ale

In 1971, the Waldos met one afteroon at 4:20 in the front courtyard of their school near the statue of Louis Pasteur. They set out in a ’66 Impala armed with a "treasure map" on a journey to find a secret garden near Point Reyes. They met there at the same time every day and continued their quest. They never found the secret garden....But they keep lookin’. The dankest and hoppiest beer ever brewed at Lagunitas was made with help of the Waldos for all treasure hunters.

4.0 Pours a beautiful hazy copper color with a foamy and persistent white head. Aroma of caramel, pine and citrus. Nice and malty with notes of caramel, biscuits and cannabis. Dry, dank, bitter, bold and delicious. Lagunitas sure can brew an IPA.
3.2 How: Bottle. Where: Systembolaget. Appearance: Hazy dark golden colour with a white head. Aroma: Malt, caramel, hops, grapefruit, citrus, resin. Body: Medium body and carbonation. Flavour: Malt, caramel, grapefruit, citrus, hops.
3.9 Tap @ The 024 - (First night out after full vaccination.) Everything I look for in a DIPA. Clean, balanced, solid malt structure for the hops. And small kick to the head. (One went a long way, but friends insisted on buying extra rounds - I'll say this... despite a hazy evening, felt fine the next morning).

4.0 Aroma is fruit, toffee/caramel and creeping nutty hops. The flavor is citrus, fruit, malts, toffee and an earthy/nutty/bitter hop/creeping alcoholic finish. Earlier Rating: 4/29/2016 Total Score: 4 Aroma is pine, spices and a big hint of bitterness. The flavor is grapefruit, spices, malts, slightly harsh in the middle/feel, slight sweetness and a mix of tropical fruit and bitterness in the finish.
4.5 Pours clear amber with a thick and persistent buff head. Aroma starts with crisp resiny hops and adds tangy Mandarin orange, fresh malt and zesty pineapple as you close in. Flavor offers excellent piney hops, resiny and woody and bitter and a little dank, plus tangy and sweet Mandarin orange, zesty and slightly tart pineapple, crisp fresh malt - it will dazzle your taste buds. Texture provides firm body and lively, lasting fizz. Definitely a special ale! Earlier Rating: 4/21/2017 Total Score: 4.2 Aroma delivers a strong note of zesty, resiny hops with funky and malty hints. It pours out of the bottle clear topaz with a nice but effervescent eggshell head. Flavor presents resiny hops as the lead note and funky, citrus, fresh malt, and bitter evergreen as backup performers. Mouthfeel features good body, if not a lot of fizz. Get weird, get Waldo, get hunting!

3.7 Hazy caramel-amber body, medium-thin clumping beige head. Nose dank and sugary with pine, toast, and berries. Sweet, hefty, resinous, dank body, with pine, sugared citrus peel, toasted sugars, and a warming booziness. An old-school West Coast behemoth of an IPA that now strangely seems anachronistic.
3.9 Tasty and strong. Almost fruity at first, slightly bitter finish, but pretty balanced, really. Kinda easy to forget it’s an Imperial.
4.2 Bottle poured into a tulip glass. Clear orange/amber hue and a small off-white head. Spotty lacing. Aroma is mango, pineapple, a hint of floral and dank. Initial taste is powerful with lots of those same notes from the aroma. Fades to a strong pine/floral mix. Body is medium and carbonation is lively. Wonderful!
4.1 En glad överraskning - fruktig och nästan lite syltig. Trots den hög alkoholhalten så slår det inte över!
3.3 12oz bottle courtesy of Headbanger poured into a Tulip. Color is a hazy golden with good carbonation and a thin slightly off white head. Aroma is sour orange juice and a hint of caramel. It has a bold medium body with rich mouthfeel. Flavor is sweet with pine, citrus and caramelized peach. Aftertaste comes in with a bold bitterness, the citrus turns to an orange taste and a boozy fruit flavor that lingers a bit. Overall it seems a little odd at first but the more I drink and as it warms just a bit the more I like it.
3.8 Keg at The Farmer's Boy, St Albans, Herts. An amber coloured pour with a medium off white head on top. Sweet, malty, caramel aroma and taste. Quite rich and dank with some bitterness. Really good but couldn't drink too much of this.
4.2 On tap. Pours a clear amber with little head. Aroma is extremely hoppy, dank, pine and citrus fruit. Big body. Flavour is malty, rich, bitter. Lots of pine. Sweetish. Grapefruit, sweet orange. Lovely.
5.0 A gourmet beer. Lagunita's makes some TOP TIER brews and THIS is definitely one of them. Pure IPA delight. Rich and malty/hoppy and warms up the body with the 10.8% abv. Truly a winner and worth $12 for a 6pack. 5/5 Lagunitas
3.8 Bottle from Systembolaget. Almost clear light copper light amber liquid with small off-white head. Aroma of citrus, pin, weed, syrup, fresh hops, light caramel and bread. Taste is dry and heavy bitter with notes of citrus, lemon peel, bitter hops, booze and fruity marmalade. Medium bodied with medium to high carbonation. Bit old school, definitely boozy and bitter, but quite nice.
4.0 (Bottle) Clear amber orange body with a large, off-white amber-tinted, foamy head. Aroma of caramel roasted malt, pine and citrus hops. Medium body, round and oily mouthfeel. Sweet and malty base flavor with big hoppy bite and noticeable warming alcohol; grapefruit, pine, orange; herbal; some floral notes; dank hops; sweet malt, hops, and alcohol are all big, but stay balanced on the whole.
Riktigt god
4.6 Smell of sweet malt with a touch of honey. Color is a beautiful amber with a quickly dissipating head that leaves a lace along the side of the glass. Taste is biscuity and hoppy! Love it
3.9 Rating #8005, Beer #13 (lucky 13) of 17 (8 beers on either side of #8000 plus the magic 8000th itself) Super hazy and deep bronze and copper coloured body with a very thin, single centimetre tall off-white head. Aroma of very deep alcohol, resin, grapefruit, oranges, pine and metallic notes with a ton of both malt and hops - with the more herbal and grassy notes showing off stronger. Medium to Full-bodied; Super dank and resinous hop flavours up front with a lot of alcohol and medicinal and astringent undertones that have a lot of bitterness, along with a very well-supportive and pungent malt character on top of all the grassy and floral components of the hops - but quite bitter throughout. Aftertaste shows the very pungent herbal and grassy hop flavours along with a LOT of alcohol and astringency and some deeper medicinal notes that show it's strength, particularly at the end in terms of dryness, hops and astringency. Aftertaste shows the bitter and very herbal, grassy hop notes with a lot of alcohol, almost syrupy at times with some candy sugar, but mostly pure caster sugar notes with a lot of hops, but an equal amount of malt - deep and dense throughout in a balanced and very flavourful way. Overall, a very nice [real] Imperial IPA of the past that simply isn't made much anymore, sadly. This is potent, packed with flavour, show a lot dryness and character, but is strong. Luckily, it's packaged in a twelve ounce bottle, which is perfect for this style and the contents. This was the thirteenth beer of my 8000th celebration, the fifth on the 'other side' of 8000, but a great [real] Imperial IPA. I sampled this twelve ounce, stubby bottle, purchased from Habersham Beverage Warehouse in Savannah, Georgia (Abercorn Street Location) on 04-May-2018 for US$2,07 sampled at my house in Washington on 01-May-2020, almost exactly two years later, as Beer #13 of the 8000th Beer Celebration!
3.0 Meh...
4.1 IPA, maar veel zoeter en zwaar bier!
4.0 Amber coloured. Caramel malts, massive pine hops, fairly sweet. Well drinkable.
3.4 Sample@Ølfestival, København 2019. An amber coloured beer with a beige head. Aroma and flavour of malt, caramel, hops, alcohol, citrus and with a bitter finish.
3.6 Sample@Ølfestival, København 2019 Day 2 (24/05/2019) - golden amber with a white head. Sweet fruity and malty, some sweet caramel malty notes, medium body, resinous sticky sweet hoppy close.
4.0 Could be the strongest and hoppiest Lags IPA I have sampled. Super bitter with a decent malt base. Not the typical trendy juicy hazy IPA. This is an old school West Coast style. Slightly boozy. Has a light copperish to gold appearance. Not quite one of their best, but solid all-around and priced very well for a TIPA.
4.1 Tap at Bishops Arms Östersund. A deep hoppy meaty aroma. Gold. It's like a hop wine. Delicious.
0.9 Bottle, $2 at vintage. Scary volatile aroma. Pours like one big ball of viscous bitter rubber and it taste exactly the same. What's the purpose of this beer, just to get you f'd up on one bottle and insult you the whole time while its doing so? WTF?!? How can anybody enjoy bullshit like this? One big fat nasty mug of happy bullshit. Warming sensations all around in the finish.
3.4 Tap @ Bishops Arms, Mollberg 24/7-19. Fruity and hoppy with citrus and grapefruit, also pine needles. To much hop spiciness. Body is medium, dry finish.
