Lagunitas Undercover Investigation Shut-Down Ale

Lagunitas Undercover Investigation Shut-Down Ale

We brewed this especially bitter ale in dedication to all the world’s would-be astronauts, in remembrance of the 2005 St. Patrick’s Day Massacre on the Brewery Party Grounds and also in joyous celebration of our 20-day suspension that following January. Do the crime. Do the time. Get the bragging rights. Cheers!

3.7 Pours a dark caramel color with a medium head, white. Citrusy flavor, but not bitter. Good beer with a light dinner.
4.0 I happened to read Lagunitas account of the said St. Patrick’s Day Massacre. I would encourage you to do so. Pours an odd caramel color. One finger white head. Black stuff floating around. Okay retention and decent lacing. Aroma is big biscuit and toast. A little lemon. Honey. Caramel. Sweet. Taste is sweet. Boozy. Caramel. Lemon. Biscuits. Malty. Hoppy Mouthfeel is medium full bodied but can’t taste any alcohol. Sweet. Lightly bitter. Overall it’s good. Tasty. Good beer. I’d recommend it and buy it again.

3.8 From backlog. Bottle shared with Bergstaden in Vista, Ca. Golden with white head. Malts, Caramel, hops and orange. Some bitterness.
3.7 Clear copper color with beige head. Aroma has resiny hop notes and spruce syrup on a toasted/caramelized malt base. Taste is bittersweet at first with lots of pine flavors, wood and burnt sugar. Finish is more bitter but not astringent or overpowering in any way, nor does it linger too much. Medium body and carbonation. Really well balanced beer with well hidden ABV.
3.5 355ml bottle. Clear, amber colour with average, thick, creamy, moderately lasting, minimally lacing, white head. Slightly perfumed, floral and citrusy, hoppy aroma, caramel malty basis, a spicy touch of wasabi. Taste is sweet-ish, caramel malty, slightly floral, perfumed, citrusy hoppy, hinst of orange, lemon, orange zest, a spicy touch of wasabi.
4.8 Pleasantly surprised. For some reason I didn't think this brewery was very good. But I really like every thing I tasted from them
3.4 7/8/18: $1.66 12 oz bottle purchased 3/4 at Binny's Niles poured into pint glass. Clear copper pour, quickly dissipating carbonation, Thin white lacing. Light citrus hops aroma. Light hops and citrus taste, balanced. Dry, slick mouth feel and finish. Overall nice offering.
3.9 Taster at Royal Albert Hotel, Surry Hills. Pours a caramel gold with a white head. Aroma: caramel, biscuity malt, citrus, boozy notes. Taste: caramel malt, biscuity malt, orange peel, mild sweet lemon, mild stonefruit flavours. Smooth flavour balance. Medium bodied. Moderate boozy finish. This was quite good!
4.4 Undercover Investigation Shut-down Ale has a thick, off-white head, a semi-clear, copper appearance, with powdery sediment, lazy bubbles, and some lacing. Aroma is of fruity, bright hop oils, with white bread crust. Taste is of brown bread crust, some caramel, and odd, fleshy hop bitterness. Mouthfeel is high medium, and U.T.S.A. finishes medium dry. It reminds me of one of those Voodoo Ranger IPAs. RJT
3.5 Bottle pour into pub glass from Greg & Jane's Beer and Wine. Appearance is honey-brown, overall hazy (clear brown with large white particulates), trace sparkle at the edge of the glass, finger-width fizzy beige head with poor retention and no lacing. Aroma is bread, caramel and milder candied sugar, light citrus. Taste is caramel/toffee with alcohol astringent bite, late bitter resin/pine. Palate is medium-to-full bodied with thick, viscous, frothy texture, soft carbonation and sweet, malty with alcohol and late bitter finish. Overall, alcohol is too present; enough hops to keep it from being too sweet.
3.7 Bottle from systembolaget. Amber color with quite thick long lasting head. Aroma has caramel, malt, orange, pineapple. Taste is malty with long bitter and a bit sweet aftertaste. Flavors of caramel, resin, needles, orange, sweet fruits.
4.0 Another solid brew from Lags. Seems like a DIPA to me, or a cross between that and a copper ale. Dark cloudy amber color, with aroma of pine and citrus. On the bitter side, just about a hop bomb, but the malts balance it out nice. Taste like some sweet rye in there. Has a dry finish. After I originally sampled this, I liked it so much immediately ran out and bought another six-pack to stock up on. Is getting a little old after a while (been there done that, etc.), but enjoying my last one now as I review. Waiting to see what Lagunitas comes out with next!
3.4 Solid dark brown-reddish color. not much on the nose.. some dank pine, faint malt. Taste is heavy, thick hops. Mouthfeel is thick, kind of flat. Not a huge fan.
3.8 Bottle from systembolaget. Pours a bronze like colour beer with a medium head. Fruity and hoppy with notes of caramel and pine. Dry finish.
3.1 Unclear amber color, large beige head. Aromas of marmalade, sugar, hops, alcohol and paint(?). Medium bitter taste with hops, rye, alcohol and dried fruit.
3.5 Smells slightly sour with a thin foam. Tastes rich with malts, hops and spices. I would never suspect that his was 9.7% ABV. Leaves a slight dry after taste and a warming in the belly.
3.8 4 finger off-white head. Semi-clear, amber coloured beer. Aroma is orange and apricot marmalade, bready malts, dried dates, lemon candy and dishcloth. Taste is lemon candy, dishcloth, blood orange, orange and apricot marmalade, slight earl grey, slight dried dates and a really steady malt base. Mouthfeel is soft with an equally soft, foamy, medium carbonation. High bitterness. No stickiness. Sadface. Slightly oily. Medium body. Overall: This is simply great. For me, more a classic, really bitter WC-IPA with some underlying strong ale characteristics. Even though Lagunitas has strayed from craft beer, it's nice that they still can brew a good beer. No big alcohol hints and quite drinkable for the ABV.
4.2 Vackert mörkt bärnstensfärgad, med tre cm beige skumkrona. Malt, tall o torkad frukt dominerar doften. Tydlig sötma, fikon o dadlar balanserar tall till en härlig bittersöt brygg, där beskan vinner på slutet. Mycket bra!
3.6 355ml bottle from Systembolaget. Clear amber with a large, dense and lasting white head, rich lacing all around the glass. That hoppy Lagunitas aroma, pine, resin, orange and grass. Silky, full bodied mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Malty sweet taste, caramel backbone, citrus and herbal bitterness, grassy and biscuits. Bittersweet and dry finish. Tasty!
4.0 Clear amber, tall head, loose bubbles. Aromatic hoppy nose. Full body, flavor matching in intensity, silky and foamy texture, very hot mouthfeel, good length, hoppy, bitter finish. Assertively bittersweet, crisp. Very balanced hop/malt combination, grapefruit rind, juice and pith, aggressively alcoholic, spices, camomile. Another great Lagunitas work of art.
3.8 Pours amber medium white head. Aroma is fruity, silage, hay, some resin, strong pine. Taste is fruity, pine, resin, some silage, soft vegetables, hops, sweetness. Very nice beer!

3.7 12-oz. bottle pours slightly clear copper with a spritz of white head and lacing. Aroma: not much, although some faint malty and fruity sweetness. Flavor: brown sugar, caramel, nuts, earth, plums, apricots, green onions. Mouthfeel: medium- to full-bodied, boozy finish.
3.8 We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch - we are going back from whence we came.
3.4 Bottle. Woody aroma with dark amber pour. Burnt malty caramel and sticky sugar. High alcohol content is prevalent. Probably would be better if not such a boozy palate. Overall quite good though. Quality of the ingredients shines through.
4.1 bottle from wegmans, for a 9.7%er pretty top notch. Its an american strong ale which should be noted so don't look for ipa style flavor or smell. Not my favorite beer but its very smooth and totally drinkable especially for the bac
3.9 Copper pour, finger of tan head. Nose is malt, booze, and pencil shavings. Middle is tree bark, stone fruit, brown sugar, nuts, and medium kilned malt. Finish shows more alcohol and caramel.
3.9 12 oz bottle from Trader Joe's in Short Pump, VA The ale poured a clear dark amber color with an off white head. The head had lasting power and excellent lacing down the glass. Toffee, caramel malts, plums and hints of pine are detected on the nose. The taste is even more complex with some citrus, raisins and a nice warming sensation. The medium body ale has average-soft carbonation. Great ale. The ale finishs clean with some caramel sweetness mixed with hop flavors of tropical fruit. One of the best from Lagunitas.
3.9 Tasty dank bomb from Lagunitas, boozy and sweet but with a considerable herbal hop bitterness, tossing in some classic orange marmalade notes amid all the earthy, weedy hops. Spicy, piney, grassy...pretty diverse hop profile, shored up by a hefty, thick caramel malt base. A little warm and sharp around the edges, but lordy is it pretty, and the minty herbal earthiness of the hops makes for a lovely bouquet. Chunky, tasty pint.
