Lake Superior Sir Duluth Oatmeal Stout

Lake Superior Sir Duluth Oatmeal Stout

A variety of dark roasted malts, oatmeal, and our own imported English ale yeast creates a smooth almost-black beer with chocolate overtones and a roasty flavor.

3.8 A pretty decent oatmeal stout and a better beer in general than the only other Superior beer I’ve had: the Koelsch. Nice slick mouthfeel. Very roasty with a coffee aroma. Winchell brought this back with him from MN.
3.5 March 8, 2013 - free sample from bottle at AV. Dark brown pour with nice tan head. Roasted malt and chocolate in aroma and taste. Odd that I seemed to like this better than the oaked version at Winterfest. Maybe the other amazing beers I had that night had something to do with it.
3.2 bottle pour. a bit lighter than expected. too thin on the mouthfeel. head dissipates quickly.
3.4 Tap. Aroma of chocolate, cofffee and oats. Taste is slightly sweet with a smooth creamy mouthfeel. Fits the bill of a sweet stout in my mind.
3.4 12 oz. bottle. Pours a medium, well retained light beige head, over a claear, dark brown (SRM 35) body....nose is primarily chocolate, cocoa, hints of toffee/caramel......taste is chocolate, cocoa, light toffee/caramel, finishing slightly sweet with hints of bitterness....mouth feel medium, slightly creamy, carbonation adds light spritz. The bottle’s label indicates this is an Oatmeal Stout. It has a very light mouth feel for an Oatmeal Stout and it is not as creamy as it should be. If this is a Sweet Stout it should have a slightly higher sense of sweetness. Either way this is a pleasant enough beverage and is quite drinkable. BJCP 7/3/13/4/7
3.9 Pours very dark with big brown head that lasts and great lacing. Aroma is complex with roasted malts, a little chocolate and smoke, and some sweet lactose. Taste follows suit with a moderate amount of roasted malts and a tiny bit of coffee. Really drinkable and a good aftertaste. Palate is pretty smooth but just a little thin in the end. Overall a very good beer. Aroma is really sweet and a little medicinal, but still pleasant. Taste is roasted oats and malt. Palate is average, but everything comes together nicely to make a decent stout. 8+3+6+3+14=3.4
3.4 Pours a dark black with a brown head and aroma of roasted malt and chocolate aroma. Taste is very sweet, of roasted malt, chocolate, and coffee with a medium, toasty finish. A nice sweet stout with good flavor.
4.0 Pours a black as a moonless night, with a small head. Smells sweet witha chocolate toasty malty nose. Taste is sweet with chocolate and coffee notes. Very drinkable, without any bitterness. Carbonation is soft and the finishes like a Hershey kiss. Quaff Score 8 / 10 Nice sweet stout !
2.7 12oz bottle. Opaque brown-black, deep beige head. Sort of odd chocolate centered aroma, some oats and a hint of sour pungency. Kind of sharp, I’d guess a little infected. Other than that, pretty tolerable. Medium bodied, roasty bakers chocolate. Not a really impressive example of the style, I certainly won’t seek this or any other Lake Superior beer out again.
3.5 Has some faint chocolate taste as well as scent. Also getting some kind of fruit taste, rather light, but really drinkable.
3.0 Its ok, not really anything special. No complexity, no layers. But still pretty tasty overall.
2.6 This looks the part, deep and dark with a tan head that laces nicely. Nose is too damn subtle, but what’s there is good, grains, metallic, like a brown ale really, where’s the oatmeal? Taste: again, subtle... you have to do a bit of thinking to gather anything worth noting... it’s like a dark, oat-dashed New Castle, not very impressive. The feel is decent, milky and an appropriate level of carbonation, don’t expect anything spectacular but it works. Overall, average, that’s about it.
2.6 This didn’t really work for me at all. A really nice chocolately nose, but the flavor was sour with an overly carbonated body--almost like a bad bottle, I don’t know.
4.7 Probably not the first time I have drank this beer. I spent one year in Superior/Duluth. Very good, glad to have it again.
3.9 Bottle. Pours near black with a deep brown head that dissipated slowly to the edges. Aroma has a nice sweet milk chocolate note with some roasted malts and a hint of coffee. Flavor has a really nice smooth milk chocolate note throughout with some dark grains and oak coming out.
3.3 Near black with a dark tan head. Malty, caramel aroma. Up until now i was excited to try this one. The flavor started dry, but changed to a smokey plastic-like aftertaste that was unexpected. Lighter side of medium body.
3.6 Bottled sample. Near black in colour with medium carbonation. Aromas are of chocolate covered raisins and a bit of caramel. Flavours are of dark chocolate, coffee, chalky + other minerals, mild smoke and even fainter sweetness. Medium bodied. Simplistic aroma, but loads of character, complexity, and balance in the mouth. Good stuff.
3.3 Bottle. Pour is watery black brown with a kahki head that dissipate to a ring and is calm. Aroma is soy coco and hints of coffee along with some cereal. Taste cereal and coco with subtle coffee and malt. Palate is somewhat watery with a dry finish. Decent beer for the money.
3.0 Pours an opaque nutty/chocolate brown with very little head, just a tiny bit of tan froth. Aroma is light, notes of nuts. Flavor is earthy with notes of grassy hops, toasted malts and mild cocoa notes, definitely nutty tones.
2.9 Pours deep brown with off white head, aroma is some charred and burnt malt with some coffee notes. Taste up front is some coffee, roasted malt, and a bit of acidity. Not bad, but pretty watery and some off tastes.
2.3 Go to try a bottle of this thanks to, "AKFaust". Colour... garnet-brown with no head. Nose... musty grain. Palate... Vegetal! That sums it up!
3.4 Another fun regional bottle from a coworker, thanks Mitch! - Pours thin and dk dk brown with a medium tan head....aroma is full of roasted oats and grain, dry cocoa and slight day old coffee...flavour is similar, lightly astringent, burnt wood and burnt coffee, not bitter burnt, just kinda charred...finish had a nice grittiness to it...
3.5 Bottle: Pours a dark brown color with a thin beige head. Nose is mostly roast at first, but becomes a rich and sweet chocolatey melody. The taste beckons back to the heavy roast of the aroma with a little charred wood, light oat presence, and some bittersweet chocolate. Medium bodied and increases it’s charm as the glass warms.
3.0 pours typical stout brown black, smallish head very little lacing. Flavor is mostly of slightly blackened malts with lite but noticeable hops. Otherwise its sharp cheese, a little coffee, burnt nut and some creaminess. mouthfeel is moderate with a fairly clean finish. Overall for an oatmeal stout its OK.
3.7 12 oz bottle from Princeton’s. Black pour, thin tan head. Aroma is chocolate and roasted coffee. Flavor is slightly sweet chocolate with a creamy smooth finish.
3.4 Bottle. Black pour with a beige head. Malty with sweet milk chocolate in the nose. Flavors of roasted grains, coffee bitterness, burnt toast and some acidity.
3.3 Bottle. Opaque deep brown body topped by a ring of tan carbonation. Nose mostly of roasted malts and coffee. The body offers a little more complexity, with burnt sugars and sweet chocolate notes joining the roasted malts and coffee. Rather silky palate. Still a bit more woody acidity than I prefer in an oatmeal stout, but a better than pedestrian effort.
3.8 Bottle in Duluth. Poors a dark, brown and smells of chocolate, smoke, and oatmeal. Probably my favorite stout of all the Minnesota breweries.
3.6 12oz bottle: appearance is a very dark murky brown with small tan head, aroma of chocolate and roasted malt, flavor had good amounts of chocolate, oatmeal and roasted malt but not being over powering medium bodied and easy drinking for a stout.
2.8 12 oz bottle poured into a pint glass. Dark pour with a thin, tan head. Aroma is of guiness. It is the only way I can really describe it. To be honest, the whole beer just reminded me of bottled guiness with just a little extra bite to it. Not impressed.
