3.5 Pours a deep mahogany red/brown with a tan head and good lacing. Aroma is malty with a touch of raisin and berry. Taste is sweet and malty with a slightly bitter finish that offsets the sweet and masks the alcohol.
3.0 (bottle) dark amber. Aroma of toffee and a little resin. Flavor is sweet toffee malt and resiny hops.
3.2 nearly clear brown pour with a 1 finger, creamy beige head. Aroma is mostly caramel and toffee, with a little sweet citrus and herbal hops thrown in, surprisingly weak aroma. Flavor is roast, chocolate, molasses, licorice, some dark fruits, earthy leaves, nutty notes and citrus. Medium body with a creamy to syrupy feel, light, but blanketing and pretty sharp carbonation and dry finish, with a lingering prickly carbonation and a sort of tree bark-like astringency. Good stuff overall, but the aroma being so weak brings it down a peg. A bit weird, though. I think if somebody were trying to make a fruitier Dubbel using American-style ingredients they might come up with something like this.
2.5 A fairly mundane offering from Lakefront, I was expecting more. Pours a dark amber color, but not a whole lot going on in the aroma department. On the palate there is some spice and a little hop resin.
3.2 (Bottle). Minimally filtered light brown appearance with thick head and lacing. Flavor of alcohol mixed with malt. This one falls short from this brewer.
4.2 Bottle from Willy St Coop. Pours a reddish brown with a tan head. Very floral of apricot and citrus. Some candied sugared aroma as well. Taste is floral and juicy with a strong caramel, malt backbone. Slightly bitter on the finish with some alcohol. Slightly warming. This is a very enjoyable beer, I wish this came in more than sets of four.
3.9 Bottle - tan colored fair size head, murky dark brown color, sweet dark fruit and malty aroma and flavor, good fruity hop balance though, almost reminds me of a Belgian dubbel style ale - very good overall
4.0 Bottle from Pacific Liquor: I was a little hesitant about this beer until I saw the ABV, and only then did I think this might actually taste good. Created a thick pillow of fluffy foamed head while the color was a glowing brown hue. This must be an old bottle because there is so much sediment floating the liquid was completely opaque. There was some scent of dead yeast in the aroma which I have started to really dislike, but there is a background of maple syrup, powdered sugar, and cinnamon and reminds me a lot of the French toast I make. The flavor is thick with molasses syrup and has a sticky residue in the palate. The malts are extremely sweet while the hops are in perfect balance and allow the malt to dominate the profile of this American strong.
4.0 On tap: Very good beer. Be careful, the alcohol will definitely sneak up on you,
3.7 Bottle. Nutty caramel malt, light creamy chocolate, and very light hoppy aroma. Clear mahogany with a large tan head. Roasty creamy caramel malt, light astringent citrusy/grassy hops flavor. Medium creamy body, soft carbonation. Quite nice.
3.5 Bottle. Pours dark amber brown with off white head. Nose and taste of fruit, spicy hops, fruit cake, toasted caramel malt and pine/resin. Medium body.
3.8 Bottle, 22oz. From a trade with a good Danish friend. A brown one, almost clear, and topped by a beige head. There’s citrusy hops in the aroma, sort of balancing the nutty, caramel-ish maltyness. Nuts, caramel, roasted malts, sweetness and a fine bitterness in the flavor. It’s full-bodied and soft on the palate, with a pleasant carbonation. Overall, perhaps a bit on the sweet side, but I’m not dissatisfied in any way. 130405
3.8 bottle. Poured dark brown with a nice laced mocha head. Fresh citrus hop aroma. Medium bodied, tight carbonation, almost buttery mouthfeel, tart dry warming finish. Roasted malt flavour with a hoppy punch. Sweet caramel and dark fruit with a peppery note, alcohol presence.
3.6 Bomber. Opaque orange brown, short lived foamy tan head. Boozy malty hoppy aroma. Potent dark roasted caramel malt taste well balanced with floral citrus pine hops, some spice and heat. Average-soft carbonation, medium-full bodied, medium hopped. Well made but: DNFL (Definitely Not For Lagerboys)
3.9 Pours a clear ruby reddish orange amber. Medium, very frothy beige head, mostly lasting with good lace. Great hoppy aroma, pine, citrus, grapefruit, along with caramel to balance - sweet. Flavor is much the same with hops at center stage. Medium body. Moderate sweetness and bitterness. Piney finish. Some alcohol warmth. Oily. Hop driven. Pretty nice drinkability, not nearly as big as many beers of this style. Have had this a few times and always enjoyed it.
3.6 Appearance is deep red, almost brown with a creamy off white foam cap. Aroma is a burnt sugar, cinnamon, earthy hop combo. Taste is deep, rich malt with definitive cinnamon character and a balance hop bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium with a nice viscosity, low carbonation. Finish is dry with an herbal hop character and a bit of cinnamon
3.6 651ml bottle, dark amber-ruby color, with a thick pillowy tan head, with a nice sweet toasted, caramelized, biscuity, bready malty, floral citrus, grassy, leafy hoppy nose, with some barley sugar, piney, minty, candied orange peel accents, with a toffee, faint nutty, lemon lollipop, caramel note in the aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a warmth bready, toasted, biscuity, caramelized malt, good flowery piney, resiny, citrus, leafy, grassy hoppy character, with some lemon, grapefruit rind, mild barley sugar, faint fruity dried raisin, date, sponge toffee flavours, leading towards a warming, light toasty, caramel maltiness, lemon, grapefruit rind, intense grassy, piney, resiny, leafy, citrus hop bitterness finish.
3.9 Warming on a cold Wisconsin autumn day. Spicy initially followed by well balanced flavors throughout the mouth. Hop flavor lingers as the alcohol warms the throat for an extended period of time.
3.7 Pours a dark ruby brown with a light brown top. Aroma is earthy and pine hops with a hint of citrus. Taste is a really great mix of earthy, pine hop bitterness with caramel strong malt presence. Really well balanced.
3.1 Had at Autumn Brew Review 2013, smells like musty grains and taste was similar and very sweet.
3.7 (bottle) clear dark amber with a medium tall tn head; aromas of citrus, tropical fruit; balanced flavour with a long light bitter finish
3.5 Bomber from LCBO, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass. App.: Very deep mahogany with a fair ashen-tan head. Aroma: Rich, deep burnt sugar, dark treacle, a little molasses, quite peppery and resinous, a little dark dried fruit, maybe some grapefruit, very deep and serious. Palate: Medium+ body, full, pillowy effervescence. Flav.: Tons of very deep and sweet malts, burnt sugar and dark treacle, some molasses, still sort of peppery and resinous, a little chocolate(?) and dark dried fruit, boozy, big; sweet with pretty good bitterness (30 IBU?? c’mon...) and a long, boozy, deeply malty finish. Have had this in the cellar for a while. Big stuff, even with ageing.
3.8 Draught sample + extra pint@source during & after brewery tour 23viii13. One-off, easily the standout brew of the tour. Medium roasted, abv inapparent. Exotic Black IPA hop profile complements confident malt&yeast fruitiness. Mid creamy mf. Guinness roast. Tasty.
3.7 On tap at the annual Chicago Beer Society picnic, and self served to a clear, plastic shaker showing a clear, brown tone, with a persistent, frothy, light tan head. The aroma started with a touch of yeast, then continued with light resin, hop cones, and toasty, caramelly & nutty maltiness. Medium bodied, moderately bitter, with a creamy malt mouthfeel. Next to the Edmund, my favorite ribs & other meat pairing beer of the afternoon.
3.8 Bottle. Deep and dark, red. This has a rich, malty aroma, hinting at big things. Indeed this drinks with a rich malt essence, definitely laden with caramel and toffee, finished with a hint of American citric hops. Nice, big beer ... one to sip on the way to bed. (#5233, 8/29/2013)
3.6 A very interesting beer. Pours a beautiful dark red color with a thick brown head. Smells like a scotch ale, but also very smokey. Taste starts out very smooth and malty, but then the smokiness comes in, with a bit of a hoppy aftertaste. Had in the bottle.
(Rating #4960)
3.2 Shared bomber to shakers. Pretty sure this bomber is a few years old. The hops have mellowed and it is quite malty. Hazy red pour. Bitter. Good ale.
3.6 Bomber. Malty, nutty aroma with some sweet fruit and some booze. Pours very dark amber colored with a moderate head and lacing. Malty and nutty to start. Finishes smooth with some dark fruit and some booze.
2.9 Bottle Date: 09-28-12 Glass: Snifter Aroma: Some nuts, toffee I believe. Taste: Nuts, some light fruits, malt backbone. Overall: I think this beer would have been way better fresh, and I wished I had found a fresh bottle. But it was an okay beer, nothing to rave about.
