Lakefront New Grist Pilsner

Lakefront New Grist Pilsner

An all-sorghum beer. New Grist, a beer for Celiacs brewed from sorghum and gluten-free yeast grown on molasses.

New Grist is the first “official” gluten free beer in the U.S., although it cannot technically be called “gluten-free” until established governmental guidelines are determined for all products claiming “gluten-free” status. In the interim, this Celiac-safe beer can be called “barley-free,” and is a welcome product to those who need to live on restricted diets due to intolerance to gluten, a protein found in common brewing grains such as barley, wheat, rye, oats, spelt, kamut and triticale.

2.3 Very light yellow color. Almost clear yellow. Flavor disapates very quickly. Dry finish. Hints of Sour. Light apple and citrus notes.
2.5 Light Slight apple smell, taste is actually not bad for gluten free...slightly appley and slightly sweet
3.3 Bottle from Whole Foods Tyson. Golden body. Nose of sweet, skunky. Taste also quite grassy and skunky. Some sweet flavors. Citrus burts. Okay.
1.9 citrus aroma. golden and clear with no head. watery and very little taste except citrus finish
3.3 Clear light hay hue, like a cider I suppose, with a thin fading white head. Blonde german aroma with a hint of sweetness underneath and something very lightly floral. Crisp and dry flavor with some lemon zest and nearly classical pilsener tones, light german pilsner grain nuances, not a trace of hop save for the slight lemoniness, and a clean dry finish. Not shabby! Best gluten free beer I’ve had in some time. No off flavors or obvious gluten-free flags on the palate.
1.9 Bottled. Super light Pilsner. Fruity hops and very light. Has a ricey taste. Pretty poor Pilsner
0.8 We’re calling this the stolen-from-gluten-free-dad-because-it-is-the-only-cold-beer-at-the-cottage beer. And. It. Is. A. Mess. Light, light golden with a little white head. The taste is bitter, a little acidic, a touch of ginger, free of any of the lovely hay or cereal malty goodness that is beer. So your gluten sensitive? Take the hit and drink a beer that is twice as good as this one - say Coors Light.
1.2 Bottle at Cohill’s. I had some hope for this but as with other sorghum beers it’s just bad. Thin body with sweet flavor almost like a cider. There are much better gluten free beers out there. I couldn’t finish it.
1.5 From the 12 fl. oz. bottle that expires 16 Aug 2015. Straw yellow heady pour. Thin aroma of toasted malts and a bit of lemon. Thin watered down body. Thin flavor but the lemon stands out some. Hard to like this beer but it serves a purpose for people on gluten-free diets. My lowest rating in a long time.
1.0 Free bottle had to try....not good at all...not for me...............(#498)............
2.0 This poured a lightly straw yellow with a white head. Aroma of hay, grass, and grain. Flavor was of bland mash water. Bleh.
1.6 12 oz single from Mile High Wine & Spirits. Gold and clear with a white head and light lacing. Minimal aroma, minimal flavor, light body. Kind of tough to drink really. I’ve had a few gluten-free beers that were tolerable, but this is not. A very rare drain pour candidate for me. Very bland. Update: Couldn’t finish it... An extreme rarity.
2.1 Bottle at home. Pours light yellow with high carbonation. Aroma is fruity. Flavor follows. Very light bodied. Decent gluten free option. But not otherwise.
1.9 Pours clear with minimum head. Taste is dull and watered down. Champagne undertones with lack of hops.
2.0 12 oz bottle poured into pint glass. A good gluten free option, but not suggested if ur not celiac. Not much of an aroma, head or flavor.
3.0 Poured from bottle into a pint glass Appearance – The beer pours a clear light straw color with a billowy white foamy head with tons of bubbles popping within. The head fades rather quickly leaving just a tiny bit of bubbly lace on the sides of the glass. Smell- The aroma of the brew is heaviest of a slightly sour lemon aroma mixed with some green apple and a little bit of a more grape like aroma. Along with these are some light cracker smells and a little bit of grass. Taste – The taste starts with a sweeter rice and somewhat grape juice like sweetness. As the taste advances more sourness of a lemon and sour green apple flavor comes to the tongue. A little bit of a cracker flavor that is present at the start as well fades more and more as the taste moves onto the end with it being replaced by a bit of biscuit. With a little bit of a grassy and hay flavor that comes to the tongue at the end, one is left with a somewhat fruity sweet and somewhat unbalanced sour and odd malt flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the thinner side with a carbonation level that is rather average. For the flavors and the style of the brew the two were quite appropriate and made for a more easier drinking feel overall. Overall – Ah, nothing too spectacular here. Not offensive, but certainly not a great go to. Ok overall and a decent non-gluten brew.
2.1 Bottle 12fl.oz. [ As Lakefront New Grist Sorghum Beer ]. Clear light to medium yellow color with a small to average, frothy, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white to white head. Aroma is light to moderate malty, grain, hay, rice, citrus - apple fruity. Flavour is moderate sweet with a average duration, sweet malt, sugary, fruity. Body is light to medium, texture is watery, carbonation is soft. [20140517]
2.0 355 ml bottle. (5.3% ABV) Pours a slightly hazy, pale yellow with a small white head. Sweet aroma of apple and citrus. Sweet flavour of apples and citrus with a hint of rice. Light body with a watery texture and fizzy carbonation. Reminds me of an apple cider.
1.4 Bottle. Pale clear gold with white foamy head. Flower-scented dish soap aroma, candy sweetness, medium body and sweet and sick taste. If i ever begin to intolerate gluten i’ll simply stick to rum.
1.6 Bottle. Golden-yellow colour with a white head. Aroma is apple, malt, yeast, citrus. Flavour is apple, malt, yeast, citrus, grass. Bad beer.
2.7 355ml bottle from LCBO, Parkway Mall, Scarborough, ON. Pours a clear pale straw colour with minimal white head. Hoppy aroma. Taste is mildly hoppy with notes of citrus fruits. Lively carbonation with a crisp finish.
1.7 so far...8 lakefront beers and a 2.3-2.4 average. nothing above a 2.8. so...not gonna buy any more at any rate. But this was a freebie. And a bland one at that. Muddled sweetish beer with little hop presence or anything else. nothing too offensive but VERY light, simple and boring."
1.0 Bottle-- yuk, sweet, sticky fruit flavor and aroma, super light color with lots of carbonation. Reminds of Homer’s Mountain Dew quote: Homer: Now, what do you have to wash that awful taste out of my mouth? Khlav Kalash Vendor: Sorghum Beer or Crab Juice. Homer: Blecch! Ew! Sheesh! I’ll take a crab juice.
3.1 [ Keg ][ 5oz ][ Lakefront ][ $1.50 ][ Plastic Cup ][ 8.18.14 ] >> Clear straw pour with okay white foam. Good lace. White grape juice cocktail nose. Sweet white grape juice cocktail taste with spicy, odd sorghum flavors that I’m not used to. Becomes something like pineapple gummy bears. Really nice aroma actually. Weird pineapple hard candy taste with a lot of sugar. Not so bad really.
2.4 Bottle from Archive Beer Boutique March 2014. Too grainy in all aspects for me. Tasted very earthy.
2.2 Pale yellow with a wispy white head. Alfalfa. Peanuts. Fair sweetness. Some light spices? Maybe some red apples? I don’t really know what sorghum smells or tastes like, but I imagine the prominent character here is from that. To be fair, gluten free beers should have their own category. Compared to non gluten this is ok at best. For what it is, its a drinkable non gluten
4.0 One of the best "gluten-free" I have tasted. Luckily you can find in Oklahoma liquor stores.
1.8 12 oz bottle from backlog notes 07. Pours a slightly hazy golden color with a small white head. The aroma and flavor have sweet toffee, apple cider, some tart citrus, thin and watery, candied fruit, what a strange combination and in this case that’s not a good thing.
2.0 Bottle, pours a cloudy, pale yellow body with quickly dissipating white head. Aroma of apple, fruit, and champagne. Taste is very light, almost watery. Clean finish.
2.5 Bottle at America Strikes Back, Ulfborg. Pours clear pale straw with airy white head. Clear aroma of apple juice, with notes of yeast and hops. Sweetish flavour of apples, with sourish grainy notes and rough, estery touches. Very mild aftertaste, a little sourish. Lively carbonation. PErhaps a good refresher but not my favourite beer.
